4 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus ESIPUHE Finland Convention Bureau on seurannut kansainvälisten kongressien osallistujien kokemuksia suomalaisista kongresseista sekä Suomesta kongressimaana kolmen vuoden välein jo vuodesta 1986 alkaen. Kongressitutkimuksessa selvitetään paitsi kongressidelegaattien kokemuksia myös kongressimatkailun taloudellista merkitystä Suomessa. Taloudellisia vaikutuksia laskettaessa on delegaateille tehdyn tutkimuksen lisäksi hyödynnetty myös kongressijärjestäjille tehtyä kyselyä sekä Finland Convention Bureaun Suomessa järjestettävistä kongresseista ylläpitämiä tilastoja. Vuoden 2010 kongressitutkimus toteutettiin touko-marraskuussa Suomen vilkkaimpana kongressikautena 16 kansainvälisen kongressin yhteydessä eri puolilla Suomea. Tutkimuksen toteuttajana on Taloustutkimus Oy, jossa tutkimuksesta ovat vastanneet tutkimusjohtaja Jari Pajunen, tutkimuspäällikkö Lotta Engdahl sekä tutkimusassistentti Tuomas Virtanen. Finland Convention Bureaussa yhteyshenkilöinä ovat toimineet vt. toimitusjohtaja Kerstin Träskman ja markkinointipäällikkö Pirjo Vainio-Hätönen, sekä projektin loppuvaiheessa markkinointipäällikkö Jaana Koivistoinen. 5 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus JOHDANTO 1.1 Tutkimuksen taustaa Viimeisimpien kansainvälisten tilastojen (Union of International Associations, UIA) mukaan maailmassa järjestettiin vuonna 2009 noin kansainvälistä järjestökongressia. Suurin osa (54 %) kansainvälisistä kongresseista järjestettiin Euroopassa. Suomi oli vuoden 2009 tilastojen mukaan kongressimaiden joukossa sijalla 18, ollen näin Pohjoismaista toisena Ruotsin jälkeen. Ruotsi oli sijalla 12. UIA:n tilastossa oli mukana 194 maan ja kaupungin tiedot. Brysselissä päämajaansa pitävä kansainvälisten järjestöjen keskusjärjestö on julkaissut tilastoja kokousten lukumääristä jo vuodesta Suomessa järjestettiin vuonna 2010, Finland Convention Bureaun tilastojen mukaan, yhteensä 416 kansainvälistä kongressia, joihin osallistui yhteensä osanottajaa. Tilastoon sisältyvät kongressit, joihin osallistui vähintään 10 henkeä vähintään kolmesta eri maasta ja joiden osallistujista vähintään 20 % on ulkomaalaisia. 1.2 Tutkimuksen tavoite Finland Convention Bureau on tutkinut Suomen kansainvälisten kongressien delegaattien mielipiteitä vuodesta 1986 alkaen. Tutkimuksia on tehty kolmen vuoden välein, joista uusin vuonna Lisäksi Finland Convention Bureau on seurannut kansainvälisiä kongresseja vuosittain (pois lukien vuodet 2008 ja 2009) kongressijärjestäjille tehtävän kyselyn perusteella. Järjestäjäkyselyä hyödynnetään tässäkin raportissa kongressien tulo- ja työllisyysvaikutusten laskemisen yhteydessä. Delegaattitutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää kansainvälisten kongressien delegaattien kokemuksia kongressista ja Suomesta kongressimaana sekä kongressimatkaan ja rahankäyttöön liittyviä asioita. Kongressidelegaattien rahankäytön ja kongressijärjestäjäkyselyn tulosten avulla selvitetään myös kongressimatkailun talous- ja työllisyysvaikutuksia Suomessa. Vuoden 2010 delegaattitutkimuksen tulo- ja työllisyysvaikutukset pohjautuvat Tilastokeskuksen kansantalouden tuotevirtoja kuvaaviin panos-tuotostaulukoihin. Kysymyslomake jaettiin kongressimateriaalin mukana tai kongressin yhteydessä 16 kongressissa toukomarraskuussa Tutkimuksessa mukana olevat kongressit määriteltiin yhdessä tilaajan kanssa siten, että ne edustavat mahdollisimman hyvin erityyppisiä kansainvälisiä kongresseja alueellisesti, aihepiiriltään ja ajankohdaltaan. 8 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Tutkituissa kongresseissa oli yhteensä 6510 osallistujaa. Kongressien kesto oli keskimäärin 3,6 päivää. Vastauksia palautui yhteensä kpl. Vastausprosentti oli keskimäärin 56 %. Taulukon osallistujamäärät perustuvat järjestäjien ennakkotietoihin. Osallistujien lopullinen määrä ylitti joissain kongresseissa ennakkoon ilmoitetun määrän, mutta lomakkeita jaettiin kuitenkin kaikille osallistujille, jos otos kattoi kaikki osallistujat. Taulukko 2. 9 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Tutkimuksen toteutus Tutkimus toteutettiin kirjekyselynä. Englanninkielinen lomake jaettiin osallistujille kongressimateriaalin mukana tai kongressi-ilmoittautumisen yhteydessä. Kongressin viimeisinä päivinä paikalla oli joko yksi tai tarvittaessa kaksi Taloustutkimus Oy:n koulutettua tutkimushaastattelija, jotka keräsivät lomakkeita ja henkilökohtaisella kontaktilla motivoi osanottajia vastaamaan kyselyyn. Lomakkeiden keräykseen eri kongresseissa osallistui yhteensä 10 Taloustutkimuksen haastattelijaa. Palkkioksi tutkimukseen osallistumisesta vastaajat saivat pienen lahjan. 1.5 Tietojenkäsittely ja t-testi Atk-tulostus on tehty Taloustutkimus Oy:n laitteistoilla ja ohjelmistoilla. Tulokset esitetään prosenttijakaumien ja keskiarvojen avulla. Eri taustaryhmien välisiä tuloksia on tarkasteltu ristiintaulukoinnilla. Tulostuksessa on käytetty t-testiä, joka mittaa kunkin taulukoidun taustamuuttujan kohdalla, poikkeaako tulos muista vastaajista enemmän kuin mitä satunnaisvaihtelun osuus on 95 %:n luotettavuustasolla. Tähti (*) luvun vieressä osoittaa, että ero on tilastollisesti merkitsevä. Tulokset on esitetty pääosin graafisesti ja tekstiyhteenvetona. 10 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus TIIVISTELMÄ Delegaattien profiili Tutkimukseen osallistuneista kongressivieraista valtaosa oli eurooppalaisia. Hieman yli puolet osanottajista oli miehiä. Yli puolet delegaateista oli iältään vuotiaita. Seuralainen oli mukana noin joka neljännellä kongressivieraalla. Kongressimatka Melkein kaikki ulkomaiset kongressidelegaatit saapuivat Suomeen lentäen. Finnair oli edelleen suosituin lentoyhtiö. Useimmat ulkomailta saapuneet kongressivieraat arvioivat Suomeen matkustamisen kustannukset muihin kongressimaihin verrattuna keskimääräisiksi tai melko kalliiksi. Majoittuminen ja viipyminen Suomessa Valtaosa kongressidelegaateista majoittui kongressin aikana hotellissa tai hostellissa. Suomalaisten delegaattien suosituin yöpymispaikka oli tänä vuonna koti. Kongressidelegaatit viipyivät Suomessa keskimäärin 4,9 vuorokautta, mikä on vähemmän kuin vuonna 2007 (5,2). Kahdeksasosa osanottajista osallistui kongressin yhteydessä järjestetylle pre- tai post tourille, joka useimmiten suuntautui Suomeen. Kongressijärjestelyt Vastaajat saivat aiempaan tapaan yleisimmin tiedon kongressista kollegoilta. Edellinen kongressi ja Internet olivat seuraavaksi yleisimmät tiedon lähteet. Kaksi kolmasosaa vastaajista ilmoittautui kongressiin 1-6 kuukautta etukäteen. Tärkein osallistumispäätökseen vaikuttanut tekijä oli edelleen kongressin ohjelman sisältö. Verkostoitumisen tärkeys osallistumisen syynä kasvoi runsaasti. Kongresseihin liittyviin järjestelyihin oltiin aiempaan tapaan hyvin tyytyväisiä. Suomi kongressimaana Hieman yli kolmannes ulkomaisista kongressivieraista oli käynyt Suomessa aiemmin. Suomea pidetään edelleen melko kalliina maana muihin kongressimaihin nähden. Suomalaisiin kongressikaupunkeihin oltiin tyytyväisiä ja lähes kaikki vastaajat arvioivat turvallisuuden erinomaiseksi, kun taas vapaaajanviettomahdollisuuksiin ei oltu niin tyytyväisiä. Valtaosa harkitsisi Suomea tulevaisuudessa myös lomamatkakohteena. Delegaattien rahankäyttö Työnantaja tai muu instituutio maksaa useimpien kongressidelegaattien kongressimatkan kulut. Delegaatit kuluttivat Suomessa rahaa keskimäärin 207 euroa vuorokautta kohden / henkilö. Kongressien tulo- ja työllisyysvaikutukset Kun lasketaan yhteen kansainvälisten kongressien järjestämisestä aiheutunut rahankäyttö, kongressidelegaattien kulutus Suomessa kongressimatkan aikana sekä delegaattien Suomeen kohdistuneet matkakustannukset kongressipaikkakunnalle, saadaan kongressien tulovaikutuksiksi vuonna 2010 yhteensä 72,0 miljoonaa euroa (vuonna 2007: 99,5 miljoonaa euroa). 11 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus vaikutus työllisyyteen oli suoraan 800 henkilötyövuotta ja välillisesti henkilötyövuotta. 3 DELEGAATTIEN PROFIILI 3.1 Asuinalue Tutkimukseen osallistuneista kongressidelegaateista valtaosa oli eurooppalaisia. Osallistujista suomalaisia oli 28 %, muualta pohjoismaista tulevia 10 % ja muualta Euroopasta 46 %. Aasialaisia osanottajia oli vastaajien joukossa 7 % ja pohjoisamerikkalaisia 5 %. Muiden maanosien edustus jäi vähäiseksi. Edelliseen, vuoden 2007 tutkimukseen verrattuna Suomalaisia delegaatteja oli nyt 13 prosenttiyksikköä enemmän. Pohjoismaiden ulkopuolelta tulevien eurooppalaisten osuus vähentyi puolestaan 10 prosenttiyksiköllä. Pohjoisamerikkalaisten ja aasialaisten osuus on puolestaan pysynyt pääosin samalla tasolla kuin vuonna Taulukko 3. Naisten osuus on kuitenkin kasvanut, sillä tänä vuonna jo 48 % tutkimukseen vastaajista oli naisia (45 % v.2007). Naiset ovat tänä vuonna parhaiten edustettuina lääketieteen, koulutuksen ja sosiologian alan kongresseissa. Suomalaisten osanottajien joukossa naisia oli runsaasti enemmän kuin miehiä (naisia 59 %, miehiä 40 %). Ikäryhmittäin tarkasteltuna naisten osuus vähenee vanhempiin ikäryhmiin siirryttäessä. Alle 30-vuotiaista naisia oli 54 % kun taas vanhimmista, yli 60-vuotiaista vastaajista kaksi kolmannesta oli miehiä (68 %). Taloustutkimus Oy/ maaliskuu 2011 / LEN, TVI T-3731

12 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Ikä Kongressidelegaatit olivat enimmäkseen vuotiaita (54 %). Yli 60-vuotiaita osallistujia oli 6 % ja nuoria, alle 30-vuotiaita 22 %. Vuoteen 2007 verrattuna osallistujien ikäjakauma on pysynyt samana. Nuorinta osallistujakunta oli Lappeenrannan Multibody System Dynamics -kongressissa. Muiden EU-maiden (ei Pohjoismaat) sekä aasialaisten kongressiedustus oli hieman keskimääräistä nuorempaa. 3.4 Seuralaisten mukanaolo Hieman yli neljänneksellä (28 %) vastaajista oli seuralainen mukana kongressissa. Heistä enemmistöllä oli mukana vain yksi seuralainen. Aasiasta tulevilla kongressivierailla seuralaisen mukanaolo oli yleisempää kuin muualta tulevilla. Aasiasta ja Lähi-idästä tulevilla oli pääasiallisesti mukana yli kolme seuralaista. Kaikkein vähiten seuralaisia oli mukana kongressidelegaateilla Helsingin Baltic Medico-Legal Association kongressissa. Sen sijaan useimmiten seuralainen oli mukana Hämeenlinnassa pidetyssä Nordic Dairy kongressissa. Taulukko 4. 15 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus KONGRESSIMATKA Ulkomaisilta kongressidelegaateilta tiedusteltiin, millä tavoin he matkustivat Suomeen ja mitä lento- tai laivayhtiötä he mahdollisesti käyttivät. Lisäksi heitä pyydettiin arvioimaan Suomeen matkustamisen kustannuksia muihin kongressimaihin verrattuna. 4.1 Matkustustapa Suomeen Valtaosa (91 %) ulkomaisista kongressivieraista saapui Suomeen lentäen. Laivalla matkusti 4 % vastaajista, junalla 2 % ja muulla tavoin 1 %. Muita vaihtoehtoja kuin lentäminen käyttivät eniten Pohjoismaista sekä EU:n ulkopuolisesta Euroopasta saapuneet kongressivieraat. Vuoteen 2007 verrattuna matkustustavat ovat pysyneet samanlaisina. Suosituin lentoyhtiö Suomeen lennettäessä oli edelleen Finnair 44 %:n osuudella. Osuus on hieman kasvanut viime vuoden tutkimukseen verrattuna, jolloin Finnairia käytti 41 % delegaateista. SAS:lla lensi tänä vuonna vain 11 % (19 % v.2007) ja Lufthansalla 14 % vastaajista. Lufthansan osuus on hienoisesti laskenut (v.2007: 17 %). Neljänneksi käytetyimmät lentoyhtiöt olivat Air France-KLM sekä KLM Royal Dutch Airlines jota käyttivät 5 % kongressivieraista. Halpalentoyhtiöitä käytti 10 % kongressidelegaateista. Finnairia suosivat erityisesti Aasiasta saapuneet delegaatit. Vastaajista 13 % tuli Suomeen Viking Linen laivoilla (19 % v.2007). TallinkSiljan suosio kongressivieraiden keskuudessa on kasvanut runsaasti, sillä peräti 42 % saapui Suomeen TallinkSiljan laivoilla (18 % v.2007). On kuitenkin huomattava, että muu vastausten osuus vuoden 2007 tutkimuksessa oli lähes kaksi kolmasosaa. Tähän on mahdollisesti vaikuttanut se, että Tallink ja Silja Line nähdään edelleen erillisinä laivayhtiöinä fuusioitumisesta huolimatta. 4.2 Suomeen matkustamisen kustannukset Ulkomaisilta kongressidelegaateilta tiedusteltiin, mitä mieltä he ovat Suomeen matkustamisen kustannuksista muihin kongressimaihin verrattuna. Vastaukset annettiin viisiportaisella asteikolla erittäin kalliista edulliseen. Ulkomaiset kongressivieraat pitivät matkakustannuksia Suomeen enimmäkseen keskimääräisinä (41 %) tai melko kalliina (40 %). Vain 4 % vastaajista koki Suomeen matkustamisen edulliseksi tai melko edulliseksi. Vuoden 2007 tutkimukseen verrattuna mielipiteet matkakustannuksista ovat pysyneet samalla tasolla. Keskimääräistä kalliimpana Suomeen matkustamista pitivät Euroopan ulkopuolella asuvat, etenkin Oseaniasta, Aasiasta sekä Keski- ja Etelä-Amerikasta saapuneet delegaatit. Luonnollisesti läheltä Pohjoismaista saapuneista vieraista matkakustannukset eivät tuntuneet yhtä kalliilta kuin kauempaa matkustaneista delegaateista. 22 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus MAJOITTUMINEN JA VIIPYMINEN SUOMESSA 5.1 Majoittuminen Suomessa Valtaosa (79 %) kongressidelegaateista yöpyi kongressin aikana hotellissa tai hostellissa, ulkomaisista osallistujista peräti 95 %. Tänä vuonna kotona yöpyjiä oli jopa 12 % vastaajista (6 % v.2007), mikä selittyy Suomalaisten kongressivieraiden kasvaneella määrällä. Suomalaisista kongressiosallistujista vain 38 % yöpyi hotellissa tänä vuonna (54 % v.2007). Hotellivaraus tehtiin pääasiassa kongressiin ilmoittautumisen yhteydessä, hotellissa yöpyneistä vastaajista 54 % teki varauksen tässä yhteydessä. Etenkin afrikkalaiset ja vuotiaat olivat tehneet hotellivarauksen ilmoittautumisen yhteydessä. Hotellissa yöpyneistä vastaajista Internet-varauksen teki neljännes vastaajista ja 11 % suoraan hotellista. 5.2 Viipyminen Suomessa Tutkittujen kongressien keskimääräinen kesto oli 3,6 päivää. Vuonna 2007 kongressien keskimääräinen kesto oli hieman pidempi; 3,8 päivää. Osanottajien keskimääräinen viipymä Suomessa on myös lyhentynyt edellisiin tutkimuksiin verrattuna. Kongressidelegaatit viipyivät Suomessa nyt 4,9 vuorokautta, kun viipymä vuonna 2007 oli 5,2 ja vuonna 2004 peräti 6,7 vuorokautta. Seuraavassa taulukossa on esitetty kongressidelegaattien keskimääräinen viipymä Suomen eri osissa. Taulukko 5. Järjestetyt matkat kiinnostivat kaikkein eniten Aasiasta sekä Keskija Etelä-Amerikasta tulevia kongressivieraita. Varsinkin Hämeenlinnan Nordic Dairy kongressin delegaatit osallistuivat pre tai post tourille (36%). Useimmiten pre tai post tourille osallistuneet vierailivat jossakin päin Suomea. (53 %). Kiinnostus suomalaisia vierailukohteita kohtaan oli hieman suurempaa kuin vuonna 2007, jolloin puolet pre tai post tourillle osallistuneista vieraili jossakin päin Suomea. Kiinnostus itäisiä lähinaapureita kohtaan on edelleen vähentynyt: nyt 7 % kävi tutustumassa Viroon ja 4 % Venäjälle. Vuonna 2007 Venäjällä kävi 9 % ja Virossa 8 % pre tai post tourille osallistuneista. Kongressidelegaattien kiinnostus Ruotsia kohtaan on pysynyt samalla tasolla: tänä vuonna 10 % vieraili Ruotsissa (vuonna 2007: 9 %). 29 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus KONGRESSIJÄRJESTELYT 6.1 Tiedon saaminen kongressista Aiempaan tapaan yleisimmin tietoa saatiin kollegoilta, joiden kautta kongressista sai tietää 40 % vastaajista. Kollegojen merkitys tietolähteenä on noussut viime tutkimuksesta, jolloin kollegoilta tiedon sai 34 % delegaateista. Kollegoiden merkitys tietolähteenä on muita suurempaa alle 30-vuotiaiden (55 %) sekä pohjoisamerikkalaisten (50 %) keskuudessa. Edellisestä kongressista tiedon sai neljännes vastaajista. Määrä on laskenut hieman verrattuna vuoteen 2007, jolloin 29 % oli saanut tiedon edellisen kongressin kautta. Edellinen kongressi oli tärkein tietolähde Afrikasta saapuneille kongressidelegaateille. Internetistä tiedon kyseisestä kongressista sai puolestaan 23 % vastaajista. Internetiä tietolähteenä olivat hyödyntäneet etenkin Aasian kongressidelegaatit. 6.2 Kongressiin ilmoittautuminen Kongressidelegaatit olivat ilmoittautuneet kongressiin enimmäkseen 3-6 kuukautta ennen kongressia (40 %) tai 1-3 kuukautta etukäteen (24 %). Lisäksi vastaajista 10 % oli hoitanut ilmoittautumisen jo yli puoli vuotta ennen kongressia vuoden tutkimukseen verrattuna ilmoittautumisajankohdissa ei ole tapahtunut suuria muutoksia. Kongresseittain tarkasteltuna aikaisimmin ilmoittauduttiin Rovaniemellä pidettyyn Dendrochronology-kongressiin sekä Helsingin CercleS-kongressiin. 6.3 Osallistumispäätökseen vaikuttaneet tekijät Kongressidelegaatteja pyydettiin arvioimaan mitkä tekijät vaikuttivat kongressiin osallistumiseen. Tärkeimpänä syynä osallistua kongressiin pidettiin edelleen ohjelman sisältöä. Vastaajista 52 % kertoi tämän vaikuttaneen kongressiin osallistumiseen. Etenkin eurooppalaiset ja pohjoismaalaiset pitivät tätä tärkeänä vaikuttimena. Christina Conference on Gender Studies -kongressin osallistujista 68 %:lle ohjelman sisältö oli syy tulla kyseiseen kongressiin. Myös oman työn esittelyä pidettiin tärkeänä syynä osallistua kongressiin, vastaajista 48 %:lle tämä oli vaikuttanut osallistumiseen. Etenkin pohjoisamerikkalaisille, Pohjoismaiden ulkopuolisista EU-maista tuleville, Aasialaisille ja alle 30-vuotiaille kongressidelegaateille tämä oli merkittävä syy osallistua kyseiseen kongressiin. Kongresseittain tarkasteltuna Lappeenrannan Multibody System Dynamics - kongressin vastaajista 72 %:lle oman työn esittely oli kongressiin osallistumisen syy. 30 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Verkostoitumisen merkitys syynä osallistua kongressiin on kasvanut 13 prosenttiyksikköä edellisestä tutkimuksesta, ollen nyt 41 %. Lisäksi 12 % ilmoitti syyksi kiinnostuksen isäntämaata kohtaan. 6.5 Arviot kongressista Kongressidelegaatit antoivat kongressien eri osatekijöistä keskimäärin hyviä arvioita. Myös edellisessä, vuoden 2007 tutkimuksessa Suomessa järjestettyihin kongresseihin oltiin hyvin tyytyväisiä. Parhaimmat arviot kongressijärjestelyistä annettiin ilmoittautumispalveluista ja yhteydenpidosta sekä kongressin aikana että ennen kongressia. 87 % vastaajista piti ilmoittautumispalveluja ja yhteydenpitoa kongressin aikana erittäin hyvinä tai hyvinä. Lähes yhtä moni vastaaja (82 %) arvioi yhteydenpidon kongressia ennen erittäin hyväksi tai hyväksi. Eniten parannusta vuoteen 2007 verrattuna on tapahtunut sosiaalisten tapahtumien osalla. Mihinkään tekijään ei kuitenkaan oltu selkeästi tyytymättömiä. Eniten parantamisen varaa löytyy kuitenkin näyttelyistä, keskustelulle varatusta ajasta, sekä julkaisuista ja asiakirjoista. Paikallisia järjestelyjä arvioitaessa tyytyväisimpiä oltiin kongressitiloihin. Vastaajista 82 % arvioi ne erittäin hyviksi tai hyviksi. Myös majoitus- ja kuljetuspalveluihin oltiin hyvin tyytyväisiä. Paikallisista järjestelyistä eniten kehittämistä löytyy edelleen pre congress tourista. On tosin huomioitava, että vain hieman yli kolmannes vastaajista (34 %) osasi ottaa kantaa tähän asiaan. Tänä vuonna uutena kysymyksenä oli kuinka hyvin kestävä kehitys oli otettu huomioon kongressin järjestelyissä. Suurin osa vastaajista koki, että kestävä kehitys oli huomioitu jonkin verran (58 %). Vastaajista viidennes koki, että kestävä kehitys oli huomioitu erittäin hyvin. Erityisesti Aasiasta saapuneet delegaatit kokivat näin. Heistä kaksi viidestä koki, että kestävä kehitys oli huomioitu erittäin hyvin. Parhaiten kestävä kehitys oli delegaattien mielestä huomioitu Multibody Dynamics, Dendrochronology ja ESDR-kongresseissa. Kongressijärjestelyt kokonaisuudessaan saavat myös hyvän arvosanan (ka. 4,31). Peräti 90 % vastaajista antoi erittäin hyvän tai hyvän arvion. Etenkin Lähi-idästä sekä Afrikasta tulleet kongressidelegaatit antoivat hyvän kokonaisarvion. Kongresseittain tarkasteltuna parhaat kongressijärjestelyjen kokonaisarviot antoivat Lappeenrannan Multibody System Dynamics -kongressiin osallistuneet vastaajat keskiarvolla 4,73. 40 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus SUOMI KONGRESSIMAANA 7.1 Ensimmäinen käynti Suomessa Ulkomaisista kongressidelegaateista 62 % ei ollut aiemmin käynyt Suomessa. Vuoteen 2007 verrattuna ensikertalaisten määrä on laskenut jonkin verran, sillä silloin 69 % vastaajista vieraili Suomessa ensimmäistä kertaa. Eniten ensikertalaisia oli nyt Aasiasta (88 %) sekä Keski- ja Etelä-Amerikasta (81 %) tulleiden delegaattien joukossa. Suomessa käynti on myös suoraan verrannollinen kongressidelegaatin iän kanssa, eli mitä vanhempi delegaatti on kyseessä, sitä useammin hän on käynyt Suomessa aiemmin. Yli 60-vuotiaista vastaajista peräti 71 % on käynyt Suomessa ennenkin. 7.2 Mielikuva Suomen hintatasosta Suomi koetaan yhä yleisesti melko kalliiksi maaksi. Kaikista vastaajista 52 % arvioi Suomen hintatason muihin kongressimaihin verrattuna melko kalliiksi ja 20 % erittäin kalliiksi. Keskimääräisenä hintatasoa piti neljännes kongressidelegaateista. Vain 1 % vastaajista arvioi Suomen hintatason melko edulliseksi. Vuoden 2007 tutkimukseen verrattuna Suomi nähdään hintatasoltaan hieman kalliimpana. Erityisesti Afrikasta, Keski- ja Etelä-Amerikasta sekä muista EU-maista tulleet delegaatit pitivät Suomen hintatasoa kalliina. Etenkin pohjoismaiset kongressidelegaatit kokivat Suomen hintatasoltaan keskimääräisenä. 7.3 Arviot kongressikaupungista Suomalaiset kongressikaupungit saivat oikein hyviä arvioita kysytyistä ominaisuuksista. Erityisesti turvallisuus koetaan Suomessa erinomaiseksi, sillä kongressikaupungin turvallisuutta piti erittäin hyvänä tai hyvänä 94 % tutkimuksen vastaajista. Myös saavutettavuutta pidetään hyvänä, vastaajista 87 % arvioi sen erittäin hyväksi tai hyväksi. Vähiten positiivista palautetta annettiin vapaaajanviettomahdollisuuksille, tosin tätäkin ominaisuutta 69 % vastaajista piti niitä erittäin hyvinä tai hyvinä, ja vain 5 % huonona tai melko huonona. Kongressidelegaattien arviot kongressikaupungeista ovat parantuneet kaikilla mittareilla tarkastellen. Etenkin saavutettavuudelle annettiin tänä vuonna parempia arvosanoja. Jokainen kongressikaupunki sai jälleen tutkituista tekijöistä parhaimman arvion turvallisuudesta. Rovaniemi oli turvallisuuden osalta parhaimmaksi arvioitu - kaikista muista tekijöistä Helsinki sai parhaat arvosanat. Turku erottui muista kaupungeista Helsingin ohella vapaa-ajanviettomahdollisuuksien arvioinnissa. Afrikkalaiset kongressivieraat antavat turvallisuudesta keskimääräistä paremmat arviot heistä 93 % koki turvallisuuden erittäin hyväksi. 41 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus tyytyväisempiä julkisiin kuljetuspalveluihin ovat amerikkalaiset kongressidelegaatit. Suomalaiset sekä keski- ja eteläamerikkalaiset arvioivat muita myönteisemmin kongressikaupungin vapaa-ajanviettomahdollisuuksia. Muista Euroopan maista saapuneet kongressidelegaatit pitivät kongressikaupungin matkailupalveluja muita delegaatteja parempina. 7.4 Suomen-vierailun odotusten toteutuminen Ulkomaisia kongressivieraita pyydettiin arvioimaan, miten heidän Suomenvierailunsa odotukset olivat toteutuneet. Useimpien delegaattien kongressimatka oli ollut odotusten mukainen (76 %). Yli odotusten kongressimatka oli sujunut 15 %:lla. Kuitenkin joukossa oli myös osanottajia, joiden matka ei ollut sujunut aivan ennakkoodotusten mukaisesti (3 %). Odotusten toteutuminen ei ole muuttunut merkittävästi viime tutkimuksesta. Afrikasta ja Pohjois-Amerikasta tulleiden delegaattien odotukset ylittyivät keskimääräistä useammin. Kongresseista ennakko-odotukset ylittyivät erityisesti Helsingin Christina Conference on Gender Studies:in osalta 39 % kuvaili vierailunsa olleen yli odotusten. Delegaattien kertomia syitä odotusten ylittymiseen tai alittumiseen on koottu raportin lopussa olevaan liitteeseen. 7.5 Kokonaisvaikutelma kongressivierailusta Kongressivierailuun kokonaisuudessaan oltiin pääosin hyvin tyytyväisiä (ka. 4,29). Ulkomaisista vastaajista 89 % arvioi kongressivierailun kokonaisuudessaan erittäin hyväksi tai hyväksi. Tyydyttävän arvion antoi 8 % ja huonon 1 %. Afrikkalaiset sekä pohjoisamerikkalaiset olivat kongressivierailuun tyytyväisimpiä. Kongresseittain tarkasteltuna kongressivierailuun kokonaisuudessaan parhaimmat arviot antoivat Helsingin CercleS-konferenssiin osallistuneet. 7.6 Suomi lomakohteena tulevaisuudessa Ulkomaisista kongressidelegaateista yli kolme neljästä (77 %) voisi harkita Suomea lomamatkakohteena tulevaisuudessa. Noin viidennes (19 %) ei puolestaan harkitsisi Suomea lomakohteena. Etenkin aasialaiset sekä afrikkalaiset vastaavat näkivät Suomen potentiaalisena lomakohteena. 51 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus DELEGAATTIEN RAHANKÄYTTÖ 8.1 Kongressimatkan kustannusten korvaaminen Kongressidelegaateilta kysyttiin, maksoiko heidän työnantajansa tai jokin muu instituutio kongressimatkan kulut vai maksoivatko he matkan itse. Vastaajista 66 % ilmoitti, että työnantaja tai muu instituutio maksoi kulut kokonaan ja viidennes kertoi saaneensa osittaisen korvauksen. Vain 8 % delegaateista maksoi kongressimatkan kustannukset kokonaan itse. Vuoden 2007 tutkimukseen nähden kongressikustannusten korvaaminen on pysynyt lähes samana, nyt tosin hieman useamman delegaatin matkakustannukset korvataan kokonaan. Tutkituista kongresseista osanottajat maksoivat useimmiten itse matkansa Helsingin Christina Conference on Gender Studies -kongressissa. Pohjoismaisten (pl. Suomi) kongressidelegaattien kulut maksoi useimmiten työnantaja tai muu taho kokonaan, kun taas Lähi-idässä asuvista vastaajista lähes viidennes maksoi kongressimatkansa itse. 8.2 Kongressimatkan menot Kongressidelegaatteja pyydettiin arvioimaan kuinka paljon heillä ja heidän seuralaisillaan kaiken kaikkiaan kului rahaa kongressimatkaan. Vastaukset pyydettiin erittelemään eri osatekijöihin, joihin kuuluivat kongressimaksun lisäksi mm. majoitus, ostokset ja ajanviete. Annetuista vastauksista laskettuihin kokonaismenoihin kuuluvat Suomessa tapahtuneen henkilökohtaisen kulutuksen lisäksi myös edestakainen kongressimatka Suomeen. Kaikkien vastanneiden delegaattien kokonaismenot kongressiin osallistumisesta olivat keskimäärin euroa/ henkilö. Delegaattien keskimääräiset kokonaismenot ovat 360 euroa pienemmät kuin vuoden 2007 tutkimuksessa, jolloin kokonaismenot olivat euroa/ henkilö. Tätä suurta muutosta selittää etenkin suomalaisten kongressidelegaattien kasvanut määrä. Kokonaismenot henkilöä kohden vaihtelivat kongresseittain 638 euron ja euron välillä. Kongressimatkakustannusten mukanaolosta johtuen Euroopan ulkopuolelta tulleet kongressivieraat käyttivät eniten rahaa kongressiosallistumiseensa. Rahaa kului myös sitä enemmän, mitä vanhempi delegaatti oli kyseessä, poikkeuksena kulutuksessa keskitasolle sijoittuneet yli 60-vuotiaat vastaajat. Kun tarkastellaan delegaattien vuorokausikohtaista rahankäyttöä, edestakainen matka kongressikaupunkiin puuttuu tämänvuotisesta vuorokausikohtaisesta rahankäytöstä. Näin on menetelty vertailtavuuden säilyttämiseksi edelliseen tutkimukseen nähden; vuoden 2004 tutkimuksessa oli myös edestakainen matka kongressikaupunkiin jätetty pois vuorokausikohtaisesta kokonaissummasta. Kongressivieraiden keskimääräinen rahankäyttö vuorokautta kohden oli 207 euroa/ henkilö. Vuorokausikohtainen rahankäyttö vaihteli kongresseittain 109 eurosta 452 euroon/ henkilö. 57 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus KONGRESSIEN TULO- JA TYÖLLISYYSVAIKUTUKSET 9.1 Panos-tuotoskertoimien hyödyntäminen Suomessa järjestettävien kongressien tulo- ja työllisyysvaikutusten selvittämiseksi käytettiin Tilastokeskuksen panos-tuotostaulukoita, jotka tarkastelevat taloutta samanaikaisesti kysynnän ja tarjonnan kannalta. Laskelmat perustuvat vuoden 2010 delegaattikyselyn ja järjestäjäkyselyn tuloksiin sekä Finland Convention Bureaun tilastoihin Suomessa vuonna 2010 järjestetyistä kongresseista. Suomessa Tilastokeskus laatii Euroopan tilinpitojärjestelmän mukaiset panostuotostaulukot. Panos-tuotostaulukoiden avulla voidaan tarkastella, minkä suuruisen työllisyyden lisäyksen miljoonan euron sijoitus lopputuotekysyntään tietyllä toimialalla aikaansaa toimialalle itselleen sekä ns. kerrannaisvaikutusten avulla myös muille toimialoille. Kerrannaisvaikutukset muodostuvat toimialan tekemistä ostoista muilta toimialoilta itse tarjoamiensa tuotteiden tai palvelusten tuottamiseksi. Taulukoiden laadinnassa on otettu huomioon riippuvuudet eri toimialojen välillä. Tässä raportissa kongressimatkailun aikaansaamia työllisyysvaikutuksia on tutkittu Tilastokeskuksen tuoreimman Työpanos ja työpanoskertoimet taulukon avulla. Välittömät vaikutukset lasketaan ns. välittömän kertoimen avulla. Kun käytetään kokonaiskerrointa, on siinä huomioitu välittömien vaikutusten lisäksi kerrannaisvaikutukset. Työllisyys- vaikutukset on laskettu kolmessa osassa: a) Ensimmäiseksi on laskettu kongressien järjestäjien kulutuksesta aiheutuva kongressimatkailutulo ja sen aikaansaamat työllisyysvaikutukset. b) Toiseksi on laskettu kongressidelegaattien kulutuksesta johdettu kongressimatkailutulo ja sen aikaansaamat työllisyysvaikutukset. Tästä tarkastelusta on jätetty pois osanottomaksu, koska ko. erän katsotaan sisältyvän kongressijärjestäjien kulutukseen eli kohtaan a. c) Kolmanneksi on vielä laskettu delegaattien kongressimatkasta Suomeen aiheutuvat vaikutukset. Nämä kolme kokonaisuutta voidaan siis muuntaa työpanokseksi Panos-tuotosraportin taulukon Työpanos ja työpanoskertoimet avulla. Taulukko kertoo, kuinka suuren työpanoksen miljoonan euron tuotos (tässä kongressijärjestäjien menot, kohta 9.2, delegaattien menot, kohta 9.3 sekä delegaattien edestakaisesta matkasta Suomeen aiheutuneet kustannukset, kohta 9.4) aikaansaa. Taulukossa on ilmoitettu ns. työpanoskertoimet välittömiin vaikutuksiin sekä kokonaisvaikutuksiin. Välittömissä vaikutuksissa on mukana suoraan ostoista aiheutuneet vaikutukset. 58 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Kongressijärjestäjien kulutuksen aikaansaama työllisyysvaikutus Vuoden 2010 aikana Suomessa järjestettyihin kansainvälisiin kongresseihin osallistui yhteensä delegaattia. Kongressijärjestäjäkyselyn perusteella kongressijärjestäjien menot eli kongressijärjestäjien käyttämä rahamäärä kongressijärjestelyihin oli vuonna 2010 keskimäärin 321 euroa yhtä delegaattia kohti. Näin kongressijärjestäjien kokonaismenoiksi, joita tässä käsitellään kansantalouden tilinpidon termein kokonaistuotoksena, tulee (321 euroa x delegaattia) euroa. Vuoden 2010 kongressijärjestäjiä pyydettiin myös vastaamaan kyselyyn, jossa kysyttiin kongressijärjestäjien kokonaismenojen lisäksi tulojen jakautumista eri toimialoihin. Koska vastanneiden määrä jäi melko pieneksi (46 vastaajaa), kattaen 11 % kaikista Suomessa järjestetyistä kongresseista, ei kongressijärjestäjien tulojen jakautumista eri toimialojen kesken ole otettu huomioon seuraavissa tulo- ja työllisyyslaskelmissa. Vaikutuksia voidaan käsitellä myös alueittain. Oheisen taulukon taustalla ovat tiedot kongressijärjestäjäkyselystä ja toisaalta tiedot Finland Convention Bureaun ylläpitämästä tilastosta kongressivieraista kongressikaupungeittain. Taulukko 9. 59 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Välittömissä työllisyysvaikutuksissa on mukana kongressijärjestäjien menojen suorat vaikutukset työllisyyteen. Kokonaisvaikutuksissa on mukana myös kaikkien jälleenostojen vaikutukset. Työllisyysvaikutukset esimerkiksi pääkaupunkiseudulla lasketaan seuraavasti: Kongressijärjestäjien kokonaismenot pääkaupunkiseudulla vuonna 2010 olivat euroa. Välittömien vaikutusten kertoimen (12,2) mukaan yhden miljoonan euron kulutus aikaansaa näin ollen 12,2 henkilön työllisyyden. Välittömät työllisyysvaikutukset ovat siten ( x 12,2) 138 henkilötyövuotta. Kokonaisvaikutukset lasketaan vastaavalla tavalla käyttäen kokonaisvaikutusten kerrointa (17,4). 9.3 Kongressidelegaattien kulutuksen aikaansaamat työllisyysvaikutukset Kongressidelegaateilta kysyttiin rahankäytöstä eri kohteisiin. Rahankäyttötiedot on esitetty raportissa luvussa 8.2. Tulo- ja työllisyysvaikutusten laskemisessa lähtökohtana on vuorokausikohtainen rahankäyttö sekä panos-tuotoskertoimet samaan tapaan kuin kongressijärjestäjien menojen kohdalla. Kongressivieraiden kokonaisrahankäyttö koko kongressimatkan aikana on laskettu kertomalla vuorokausikohtainen rahankäyttö kongressivieraiden Suomessa vietetyllä ajalla. Suomessa vietetty aika on laskettu seuraavalla tavalla: delegaattikyselystä on otettu tieto siitä kuinka kauan delegaatit ovat viettäneet aikaa kongressimatkallaan suhteessa kongressin kestoon (4,9 3,0 = 1,9). Delegaatit siis viipyivät Suomessa keskimäärin 1,9 päivää enemmän kuin kongressien kesto päivissä on. Finland Convention Bureaun tilastojen mukaan keskimääräinen kongressin kesto vuonna 2010 oli 3,0 päivää. Näin ollen viipymänä on oheisissa laskelmissa käytetty (3,0 + 1,9) 4,9:a päivää. 62 Finland Convention Bureau Delegaattitutkimus Kongressidelegaattien edestakaisesta matkasta Suomeen aiheutuneet työllisyysvaikutukset Edestakaisesta matkasta Suomeen aikaansaadut kustannukset lasketaan siten, että suomalaisia lentoyhtiöitä käytettäessä on katsottu 80 % vaikutuksista kohdistuneen Suomeen. Ulkomaisia lentoyhtiöitä käytettäessä taas arvioidaan 20 % vaikutuksista kohdistuneen Suomeen. Laivayhtiöitä käytettäessä on arvioitu 40 % vaikutuksista kohdistuneen Suomeen. Eri tavoin Suomeen saapuneet on laskettu seuraavasti: Ensinnäkin ulkomaiset kongressivieraat käyttivät edestakaiseen matkaan kongressikaupunkiin keskimäärin 482 euroa/ henkilö. Ulkomaisten kongressivieraiden edestakaiseen matkaan käyttämä rahamäärä on laskenut hieman edellisestä tutkimuksesta, jolloin se oli 536 euroa/ henkilö. Delegaattitutkimuksen mukaan ulkomaalaisista kongressivieraista lentäen saapui Suomeen 91 %. Näistä 44 % käytti Finnairia. Ulkomaisia kongressivieraita arvioidaan olleen vuonna 2010 samassa suhteessa kuin delegaattitutkimuksessa eli noin Tämä on noin 71 % kaikista kongressivieraista. Laivalla Suomeen saapui ulkomaisista kongressivieraista 4 %. Muilla tavoin Suomeen tulleiden määrä jäi sen verran vähäiseksi, että heidät on jätetty laskelman ulkopuolelle. Kongressivieraista suomalaisia on arviolta 29 % eli noin Delegaattitutkimuksen mukaan he käyttivät edestakaiseen matkaan kongressikaupunkiin keskimäärin 66 euroa/ henkilö, joka on selvästi vähemmän kuin edellisessä tutkimuksessa (2007: 125 euroa / henkilö). Näin saadaan suoraan luvut, joista voidaan laskea työllisyysvaikutukset. Kertoimina on käytetty kuljetustoimialan kertoimia, jotka ovat 3,0 (välittömät vaikutukset) ja 9,0 (kokonaisvaikutukset). The results will be improved by this. - The conference fee was very expensive, and I would have expected at least better and more food to be included. - The conference proceedings book could have had a more user-friendly outline: in particular with regards to comparing the content of sessions going on at the same time. - Please drop the limitations of the powerpoints for the 10 min. presentations. Interdisciplinary requires excellent communication. - (Please see question # 21) More space and time for viewing the posters would have made that portion of the congress more informative and comfortable. The singing at the welcome reception was lovely, but please don t hesitate to as everyone to be quiety so that the singers can be heard. Perhaps the staff was a bit informal? - + Videoconference connect to New Zealand at day 3. + Full Conference papers as pdf-format. + Globe Hope s bag (good idea and market value of Finnish desingn) - There were only name of the person and country in the name lable, I would like to see the name of the organisation also. - =) Thank you for nice informative congress. FIN!! - 1) In fact I am helt finsk, because of my mother 2) but transport (bus, metro, ratikka) are getting expensive. - 1) Thank you for the free shuttle bus. It would be better if we can have more time to talk after the sessions are finished (Don t need to rush to the buses). 2) The food is very good and the staff are very friendly. Thank you so much! - 1) The registration fee is very high for such a congress. I do not think it is justifiable to charge so much fee from participants. There are many such conferences around the world (including Europe) but with much lower fee. 2) The 3 slides requirement for the presenters was not a good idea. You could limit the time, but not the slides. 3) Lastly, I think the questionnaire has a few unclear questions. I you cannot frame it clear, please avoid them. The market research company needs to pay more attention to frame the questions. Fieldwork organisation is peerfect. 2. The website design of World Dendro 2010 (Orange colour) as well as the decoration in the congress occasion. 3. Love this conference min for presentations is too short. A pen and paper should be included in the congress handout minutes is a very short time for a presentation. - 1 st congress. Surpriset at amount of repetition and material presented to audience already involved and informed. I learned little about new aspects or concepts or direction of Sport for All. Definitely understand Sport for All is a brand name and not a practice. Perfect concept, but this misses opportunity individual program success was important and inspiring. - A beautiful country to be proud of. Helpful student assistants. Excellent congress. - A little too crowded during lunch: not enough opportunities to sit or even stand. - A map on the website to localize the venue was missing. - A perfectly organised congress in a beautiful country! - A very serious problem was the lack of chairs or tables during the breaks and meals! - About aswer at Q29 [ Would you consider Finland as your holiday destination in the future? ]: Too expensive for what it offers, according to my preferences. I would rather spend money on a holiday in a warm water sea country, especially in the summer. In the winter, it is too far to consider it for winter sports. Otherwise, for congress and business travels, I would come back again. - About the venue: Some rooms are very small and too warm. There were few drinks during breaks and lunch (only coffee and water). - Abstract book needed! Also handouts of poster presentations. Register desk s personnel was very helpful! I wonder the reason for many empty places in poster session. More coffee and water. It was very warm weather. - Abstract book was missing. - Add notebook and pen in the registration. The dinner (congress dinner) is very expensive - Alcohol is too expensive compared to United Kingdom. May consider other parts of Finland, but not Helsinki. As a PhD student money is limited and expense is my main concern. - Alcohol seems too important. - All conf material should be made avail online & allow participant better access to wifi so that materials need not be printed but made accessible online. - All of Scandinavia is very expensive compared to my home country. - All staff and guides tried wonderfully hard to be helpful. Thakk you all for a terrific conference. Only criticism: I get the impression that everyone felt the Wednesday tours could have been better spent. The conference organisers need to think more what is appropriate for academics who have very wide experience of wilderness. - Always enjoy discover new region & people. Visit of the arctic zone without going to shopping centres, like that of Santa Claus. - Big miss it would be better if presenters were given more time, but most importantly the CD or other medium should be used to give out the full articles of all presenters because one can t participate in all of them. This is the biggest miss! - Brought my family with me and they are having a fantastic time. - Caffé activities are good. - Chairs not sufficient for many hours of congress. - Change of sessions was difficult as session conveyors did not always stick to the time limit. It would hhave been nice, if information about abstract acceptance would have come easier, so with detailed program! - Choice of Dr. Tiilikäinen was a bit unfounded. She was not able to bring new insights at all into the discussion. Consequently the panel discussion was also of poor quality. - Coffee break service was a bit stark! - Coffee breaks too heavy queueing for coffee. No Helsinki sightseeing provides - Coffee breaks should include healthy snacks. It s good that presentations were quite short. It s rather expensive! All volyntary programs should be payless. More discussions in small groups! Good material, abstracts! - Conference website was not very organised. - Conferences could be made more interactive Conference website more open e.g. possibility to pose questions to speakers (pre-conference). - Congratulations for the good work! Timetable could have been better, the layout wasn t that good, too little information. The team could have been more active and e.g. could have connected to Finnish media and organised interviews with professional journalists. - I would like to clarify, that Finland is a tourist country, however, I have not visited other places rather than Jyväskylä. Expect I will have another impression and decision regardin visiting the country again and again. - I would like to have network opportunities more with all participants; in this way, we could establish some types of professional network, such as Linked in [tekst.käs.huom: among the congres s presenters, members of the IOC for All commission and national olympic memebers for future research, information sharing and transnational co-operation. - I would like to have the abstracts in a book and to know where to find the presentations in the internet! - I would love to have more time. - I d like to travel next time since Finland is a very beautiful country! - I m a Finnish citizen resident abroad (UK) so this might affect my answers. University of Turku was only home University for several years (born and raised in Turku). - I m a frequent visitor to Helsinki but first time in July!! Stick to the scheduled times within streams, even though there might be cancellations. - In the café there was every day the same food. The keynote speakers were good and well prepared but a lot of the paper presentations were very poor. Their language skills were uneven and the presentations lacked didactic considerations. A simple method of stating off with the point will keep the listener s attention. - In the hall A I didn t hear when the coffeebreak was over there should have been a loud information about that. Thank you. - Information about poster talks was poor. More space in the poster exhibition area would have made the poster sessions less stressful! Displaying all posters throughout the congress would have allowed more time for interaction between the presenter and other congress delegates. - Interesting, but the weather is very cold and the language may be challenging. - Is it possible to extend the time on the conference & cancel the parallel session, so we can hear more folks. - Is it really ranomised use of letters on signs? =) - It has been a pleasure to return to Finland for academic activity in my field. - It is a very peaceful, quiet and beautiful city. There are a lot of people that aplicate [tekst.käs.huom:?pitäiskö olla appreciate?] sports in the street. That is very beautiful. I like it very much. - It is terrific as a conference venue. With all the experts. The food is excellent and the atmosphere very conducive to hosting top level events. - It was a nice & well organised event. Tours & social events were very good. It would have been much more nicer if everything was in a big conference center. But apart from this the effort put by all are highly appreciated. - It was my conincidental participation in this Congress. So I could not attend it all three days. I was here for other reason and I could not change my schedule otherwise. - It will be good to develop pre- or post-congress tour in conjunction with neighbouring countries (Sweden, Estonia etc.). - It would be better if there were a special registration reduced fee for all students attending the Congress not just the first few to register. This is the policy of many conferences, and it is helpful since PhD students have limited funds but benefit most from attending. - It would be better to organise the congress in September (temperature, moisture). I do appreciate your work. - It would be good if session chairs took better control of time and the length of presentations, e.g. indicate to speakers that there are 5 left, etc. Cancelled presentation should not affect timetable, i.e. the chair should not move forwards talks scheduled at a later time. This made it hard to move between streams on both days. - It would be good to get handouts of the presentations. - It would be much better if the UK used the Euro. - It would be nice if there was water bottles at the coffee table between the sessions. Therre should be power outlets for laptop computers in the session rooms. - It would be nice to define Sports for all, I have the impression that there are big differences in understanding and definition among the participants of the congress. It was too much context to competitive sports among most organisations. - It would be very nice to get the abstract PDF-document in front of the congress to have a look before. - It would have been nice to have something not sweet to eat in the afternoons. The web page could have been more informative. Otherwise, everything was great. - It would have been nice to have water served also in the seminar room during the lectures. - It s a nice country and have many nice city s and towns. Keep it. - It s a pity that there were 8 parallel sessions. Despite those, most of the rooms were quite overcrowded, forcing plenty of people to stand or sit on the stairs quite uncomfortable. Unfortunately I don t think that this problem could be solved due to the very high nr. of participants. Shifts were quite common in time schedules, making it difficult to attend to presentations in different sessions. Chairmen should be stricter to sustain the original schedule. - It s quite difficult to find vegetarian meals in Finland. Use better laser-pointers (I was not able to see the red dot). Software abstract problem lost my abstract contribution. - Just some suggestion: It would be better if the participants were particularly informed that lunch was included in the registration fee. Many people lunched outside just because they didn t know that it was offered by the organisers. It would be helpful if the lists of participants there were written the areas they are from (English, Philosophy etc.) This would facilitate the orientation. It was impossible to find pie at night. Many visitors are students and the days are long -> energy is needed!!! - More power outlets for computers are needed. - More space at the dinner. Much longer time for presentation and discussion. 80 Delegaattitutkimus (24) - Most of the questions even after 13 were not relevant to a person living in Finland. - My main comment regards the conference registration fee: TOO expensive! That is a crucial aspect to consider in the planning of conference attendance for everyone, even for fully reimbursed people, and therefore I believe conference attendance plus level of communications is affected by that. Final comment: There should be less less contributions to have space for more discussion. - My main criticism is, that there is not enough space for the large number of participants, either in the presentation room or in the entrance. - My situation is a typical, since I live in Finland (Turku), although of Australian citizenship and I spend most of the time each year in Australia. - NA - Names on badges were too small. Badges should be printed two-sided. - Need more coffee. Venue not good. Too spread out. Otherwise very good. - Need more English introduction for our understanding. - NIA. - Nice country, but very expensive. - Nice to have conference in city center. But venue was not practical for such a large event. - No cakes for coffee break. Gala party ending up at 12 pm. Quality of food very average. There was one bus, but all of us didn t get a place. Water & drinking in general was not sufficient during the presentation hours. Posters needed a lot more space during the poster sessions. many oral sessions needed much bigger rooms, and very large rooms were not used efficiently. Too many sessions of common interest were offered in parallel and one of course cannot attend two talks simultaneously. - Please more seats at the gala dinner! - Please note I come from Espoo - Please, give also the end time of e.g. registration, because it wasn t open at on Wednesday before the dinner. (I walked to University from hotel and back for nothing.) - Poor supply of drinking water / extremely narrow poster presentation venue / split conference venue. Very kind personell / rector s & mayors reception were nice / perfect conference weather. - Poor toilet/ water/ coffee facilities (very long queues). Some confusion in the registration and fees. I am not in the participant list and was not given a name tag. Free drinking water ought to be inclusive! - Positive! One personal remark: I don t like eating while standing: Too few sitting possibilities during meals. - Poster area too diverse, too loud, too crowded. Bad. - Poster area too small. - Poster presentations; lower reg. fees for students (without social program). - Poster Sessions: Halls were too crowded and were crossed by many students on their way to lectures. - Presentations at plenary very good. Break out sessions, way poor & should be screened better. (too scientific) - Price level for food and especially beer is very high! Suomi on kaunis maa! - Prices for the best student presentation and poster missing. - Pros: Safety and security. Good communication in English. Clean environment. Cons: Less attractive features. No free wifi service (no free wireless Internet connection). - Provide the servicemen with warmer clothes when they re working outside. Take the amount of people into account when organising receptions with shacks (large queues). - Really bad catering (almost no food in coffee breaks). Bad technical support in talks. - Really easy city to navigate + travel around. Bustling, fun, safe nightlife with plenty of variety available. Will definitely be back to see more of the country + hopefully the northern lights! - Recommend to give more time for discussions from members of different countries & discuss their experiences & difficulties. Discuss the subject of Diet Food, and recommed diet for different age groups. - Registration fees too high. - Scheduling conflicts of talks with similar themes appeared to be a consistent and frustrating problem. - Scientific committee could have been more strict in choosing presentations, some were of quite low scientific intererst and number of presentations and posters was large relative to number of participants. Posters should not have been placed on uppro floor in Finlandiatalo because few people made the effort to climb the steps, so I had no comments other than from people I already know. - Security is too broad subject, way too academic changes of presentations were not informed enough. - Servicepersonal i Helsingfors talar dålig svenska. När jag ringde mitt hotell talade de bara finska och engelska. Dåligt i ett 2-språkigt land, där svenska är det 2 inhhemska språket. Dåligt med tanke på att turister kommer från Sverige dagligen. One couldn t walk between the posters (very narrow space). Better XXXXXX [ei saa selvää, voisi olla schedule] of the congress book (too confusing!); more individual exhibition! - Social events and dinners were poor: Little and cold food. Had to pay for extra all the way for drinks etc. Had to pay extra for transportation all the way. Even to go swimming / Sport for All one had to pay 7. The social events were badly planned and didn t attract the participants. Also to split up the opening dinner/reception in two rooms was strange. - Some sporting social event would be welcome instead of standard tours. Poster session too big and busy (less is more), same for orals. - Some more guidance at site would be good, signs etc. Queueing at the Uni restaurant wasn t pleasant maybe a permission to bypass. - Some of the exhibition locations (2 nd floor) were very poor (remote from conference). - Some oral session presenters were absent! This is not acceptable. Please ask organizing committee to pay attention to this situation. - Some presentations did not meet expected standards I advise the congress to really check the quality of the presentations, speakers and posters before accepting them. (A higher standard is necessary.) Volunteers were excellent! =) - Some questions were not applicable, that should be an answer possibility too. - Some rooms were too hot. - Some useful professionally relevant presentations (of 13 Nov) will be missing for me, since on 12 Nov I have to leave from here. From last week I am associated with Dept. of Forensic Medicine (University of Helsinki). - Somebody in the park was acting crazy promised to kill all the congress visitors. In the restaurant downtown somebody was picking up fight. - Sometimes not enough space for poster presentation. Too many people for the small rows between the poster. - Speakers need instructions on using microphones. Some microphones may not be working correctly. - Staff of congress is wonderful. Very helpful and able to clarify and effective. - Such congress should definitely be organised earlier, not in autumn, as weather, as expected, was rather poor. - Suomalaisille voisi olla eri kyselylomake - Swedish in services and on signs needs to be improved. Overall Swedish service in the city was disappointing. Fude treatment if you try Swedish. Opening the concept of security in the beginning/ before conference would have led to deepen the concept and look at future trends. Such as security development after human security, economical/ industrial linkage, links to threats/ phenomenon, third sector participation and role in the future were lacking. Because of lacking an overview of security development the content stayed at poor/ satisfactory level. This is surprising due to the fact that we have even in Finland internationally high level security academic study done from the concept of security. Sadly, the poster area was too small for all the visitors. - The conference I attended at the University of Helsinki was excellent. Helsinki itself, however, had quite a lot of trash, and I saw several men urinating in public this made the country seem un civilized + made me feel uncomfortable. - The conference shuttle is not fully arranged as described by the booklet of the conference. - The conference was initially very hard to find and the web information inadequate with map directions. There was no sign posting around the campus. But once found, the registration desk was very helpful. - The Congress bags presented by organisers is the worst I have ever seen. I could see delegates throwing the bags into the bin as soon as they collected them. - The congress is very interesting for me, is the first opportunity and I d like to come back for other congress. - The congress town has too little things to visit, one has to get out of town for some nice sightseeing. Bad organisation of poster session (too many posters and other things going on during the poster sessions) - The congress was really well organised, BUT the accommodation in Hotel Arthur was really a drawback. When I came into the room, I checked the bathroom and it had such a bad smell, but looks like I will have to suffer this for the whole week. In comparison with the Hotel Scandic Sokos in Kuopio, this hotel really sucks. And the hallway is so dirty. It s really a shame. In case of coming here again, I would choose another hotel. And another thing -> Internet!!! With price of 100 / night we have to pay extra cost for internet????? I am really disappointed. - The content of the presentation should be considered more carefully. The level of the presentation varies too much, also the English language skills too. - The country is too cold and wet, therefore I will stay in Italy or warmer countries. - The Finlandia hall under construction was a poor choice. People with limited accessibility and handicaps have it very complicated to reach the rooms and be properly oriented. - The Finnish language is making it hard to communicate (sometimes) with locals. And it could be signs in English, you feel a bit lost. - The friendlinness of all conference staff contributed nicely to making this a personally and professionally succesful event. - The hotel was very noisy, given it was not cheap. But otherwise this was a very positive experience. - The internet registration was a mess Error message came up in Finnish & when we faxed & ed credit card info, it got lost. Hotels on conference web-pages were more expensive, than if you booked by yourself. Otherwise, conference content & scientific level was very good & well-organised. - The keynote and plenary lectures were not always equitable some were brilliant some were not, unfortunately. I wonder if there is anything to do with that to ensure the excellence of how keynotes present their lecture - The lack of question time after the last plenary lecture was disappointing, especially since there is so much more to the question of English as a (so-called) lingua franca, than can be conveyed by small-minded analysis. - The lake and the landscape are extremely beautiful. - The level of English variates a lot, as well as the level of presentations. Timetables were hard to manage, but in the end I m pleased to have a chance to be here. Thanks! - The loudspeaker system was of poor quality too loud! The outside noise was audible (from the restaurant next door). - The main building big auditorium can be far too big for the small group of participants in the end. - The main goal of my visit was the Congress program and learning from others. - The one thing I do not like is how the program book is organized, it s somewhat of a puzzle. - The only minor disappointment is, that I was unable to access Helsinki during my visit in Finland; Due to distance from Jyväskylä. 85 Delegaattitutkimus (24) - The only reason I wouldn t consider Finland as a holiday destination in the future is that there are so many new places I would like to visit. - The opening times of the restaurant kitchens are like deepest Russia, but the price level is like New York. However, it was a very nice congress and I will consider to make a private holiday here. Thank you! - The organizers were very calm, warm, helpful and very well organized. Thank you! - The organizing was well done and the conference was truly international which was very nice. Trivial comment is that there could have salty pastries or fruits instead or together with sweet pastries. - The plenary lecturese were very well chosen and very good. However, many presentations referred to outdated teaching/learning approaches and environments. - The price of 400 was way too high for a 2 day conference and for the quality of presenters, workshop, discussion. The programme (what, when, where) was very unclear presented. 1 table on 1 page would have been useful. - The program book was rather confusing than helpful. - The program organisations need more emphasis. There are a lot of parallel sessions with similar topics (even though different major topics), which makes the choice of sessions quite hard. - The program was good and well planned, but the keynotes could have been shorter in time. Very easy to find the conference venue. - The questions should have a tick box not applicable to distinguish no answer from not used. - The representative from the Ministry of Education DOESN T KNOW English, so please next time be more careful! - The sali rooms were too cramped. - The selection of papers for oral and poster was not good. Final program changed many times. One side of the posters were very far from the coffee-break area. The other one had better place regarding to the existing coffee and drink table, just in front of it. - The subjects of the sessions were really interesting but speakers should practise their presentations a bit: not to read from the paper. - The tourist information office should be open during the weekend and should not close that early in the afternoon. I did not get a chance to visit it! - The tutorials are too expensive. - The University facilities regarding lavatories (WC) were extremely unsatisfactory. Each break I had a stress to find unoccupied WC. I wonder that students could work in such environment. - The upstairs area for poster presentations was very poor. Some sessions were poorly organised. Based on topics, some sessions could have five presentations. Please consider discussions next time, which could allow feedback! - The Wednesday excursion was too long and the content poor. - There are subtle flows in the organisation, especially under technical aspects. The blueshirt-helpers should receive a good training in handling the lecture-hall technics, like lighting, microphones etc. It sometimes made quite an unprofessional impression. The sound devices are very good but they have to be operated well. Also, speakers should have the opportunity to use presenters (wireless). And print the names larger for the badges!! - There could be more recommended hotels in the list. And there could be transportation in the evening to these hotels. Now there was sauna in Hanasaari and transportation to there - There should have been an information desk in Helsinki airport to assist those of us who arrived on international flights. For NOC s in attendance, may be allocate time to present in the next congress of a Sport for All project. - There were no special diets at the meals. 86 Delegaattitutkimus (24) - There were too many posters > it was a mess. - They confirmed my hotel reservation in Hanasaari hotel and then they change reservation to Scandic Continental. After changing my reservation they did not care by transportation - They should take into consideration how big a crowd some of these sessions attract. Some big auditoriums were almost empty, while smaller were completely packed at the same time. - This is indeed a nice conference. Well organised in all aspect. - This is my 7 th time in Finland. Always pleased to come here! I feel at home I particularly enjoy the pragmatic approach, which is full of insight as well as stylish things. Baltic neighbours are always more understandable than somebody further away. - This is my first trip to Finland and I found the Finnish people to be helpful and friendly. However, Lappeenranta is very scenic, but is kind of out of the way. - This is my second visit and I enjoyed it more than before. I would like to come back and visit places other than Helsinki. - This is the first time to visit Finland, but I m very satisfied with the environment in Finland and also the congress. Reservation fee was expensive compared to conference service. - This questionnaire is aimed almost entirely at foreigners it s very frustrating to answer most of these! E.g. questions 6, 7,8 apply to all participants, 18, 27 do not apply to Finns. - This was an extremely well organised conference. The atmosphere was perfect for generating discussion and stimulating collaboration. I found this to be the most relaxed and pleasurable conference I have attended for some time. - This was difficult to fill in, if you are Finnish. - Time before first evening reception and end of presentations too long. Here in this form not possible to evaluate individual speakers, so judgement is unfair, because some were very good, some terrible. - Toivoisin vankempaa implementointia käytäntöön, toteutuksia, käytännön toteutusten tuloksia. Participant index with talk or poster # [=number] is useful. - Too many posters to see in few hours, some of them had been presented as well as oral presentations. Too many days of congress which results exhausted. Poor content of some of the oral presentations. Few industrial studies. - Too many programs run paralell, while other days nothing is interesting. Eg. tropical dendro is very much related to isotopic section; they should not be run paralell + landscape dynamics. An idea for the next time: What if you printed the name on both sides of the paper, so when the name tag were flipped over, we could still see the name. - Too many sections (sessions). - Too many streams were together I missed many good talks. Little was gained from the panel discussion Better to use this time for regular streams. Some presentations changed their timing, resulting in my sitting in on talks I had little interest in. - Too many very similar presentations at the same time. - Too much expensive country. - Too much mosquitoes in the forest. - Turku could be marketed more effectively: much of this came as a surprise. - Turkulaiselle kysymykset ei oikeastaan toimi, koska tavoite lienee tutkia kansainvälisiä konferenssin osallistujia. - Uncomfortable chairs! A bit tricky sound system! - Unfortunately the communication about the poster presentation before the congress was poor. The level of the Scandic Hotel was not up to expectations. - Unused poster spaces should be reallocated so that posters in bad locations (i.e. H 85, 86) could be placed in a better, more visible location (i.e. 84). It would have been nice with a warm dinner with all the participants, not only coctails. It s easier to start a conversation with someone sitting by your side - We travelled for a very long time, but it s very nice here. - Weather cooler than anticipated. It could be served in Audio. - Why different transhbins (energy waste, dry waste etc) are in different places. Now I had to look fo rone container for biowaste and other container for dry waste. - Wish I had more time to stay and see more in Finland! - Wish you success! - Wlan access codes should be offered actively at the registration desk. - Would be excellent to include Lapland (huskies ride) as tourist attraction. - Would be helpful if presentations went online before the conference starts.
