5 Finnish Fire Department One dark night outside a small town in Michigan, a fire started inside the local chemical plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the chemical company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact." But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situaon became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 to the fire department who could bring out the company's secret files. From the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby township volunteer fire department composed mainly of Finns over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, that li%le run-down fire engine roared right past all the newer sleek engines that were parked outside the plant. Without even slowing down it drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched as the Finnish old mers jumped off right in the middle of the fire fought it back on all sides. It was a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short me, the Finnish old mers had exnguished the fire and had saved the secret formulas. The grateful chemical company president announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave fire fighters. The local TV news reporter rushed in to capture the event on film, asking their chief, "What are you going to do with all that money?" "Vell," said Eino Karpinen, the 70-year-old fire chief, "Da first thing ve gonna do is fix da brakes on dat run down truck!" (Courtesy of Anja T.) 6 Tenants Meeng Thursday, January 19 th, pm Present: 44 Chair: Juha Myn;nen 1. Juha welcomed everyone to the first tenant s meeng of Reminder to all tenants that the pager is intended for emergencies such as a medical emergency or flooding. Please do not use the pager for things like changing of a light bulb or a li%le water dripping. You may come to the office to fill out a work order to have these smaller tasks looked auer. 3. The Family Sauna schedule on Wednesday evenings is currently full. Please inform the office by the end of January if you are interested in obtaining a me and we will do our best to make arrangements. 4. Tenants are reminded to ensure that all personal informaon is on file up-to-date and correct in the office. This includes informaon on emergency contacts, medicaons, health card informaon etc. 5. A complaint was made about the lounges on each floor being used as storage rooms. We need to come up with a soluon on how to stop so much stuff from accumulang. This happens when families leave behind their loved ones items once the apartment become vacant. 6. Parking issue: It was suggested that tenants and visitors alike drop off their passengers in the parking lot before pulling up in to the parking spot as they are pre%y ght especially under the overhang areas. 7. The containers in the back door hallway are only for used ba%eries and burned out light bulbs. There seems to all sorts of different items being placed in to these containers which do not belong there. All cardboard goes outside in to the large bin. 8. Maarit menoned up-coming events and invited everyone to a%end. 9. From Anne Ollikainen: There is an urgent need for volunteers for the 7 th floor to help with meals. The residents in the Nursing Home have aged considerably and need much more help now than ever before. Please see Arja Tolppanen if you can spare any amount of me in the evenings or on weekends. She will provide more informaon and training will be provided. The staff would be very grateful. Foot care is available to tenants every six weeks by a specially trained nurse. The session is $35 which also includes foot and leg massage. Check the bullen boards for dates and mes to sign up. Anne s Wellness Clinic runs every third Wednesday of the month in B1. This includes checking of weight, blood pressure and blood sugars as well as cha,ng about medicaons. She can also give advice, clarificaon and encouragement to tenants. This is strictly an in-house service at no cost to anyone. 10. We are encouraging tenants not to pay extra for cable services. Bell will most likely be markeng their services to Suomi-Ko tenants as they have up-graded and are ready for the future. Some tenants however were not visited by Bell technicians. One tenant asked about satellite service. It has never come up before nor has there been any invesgaon in to the possibility. A request would have to be made to the Suomi-Ko Board of Directors. Tenants may check which would be cheaper either Bell or Rogers and decide themselves which service they would prefer. End of meeng: 2:37pm. Ole hyvä ja älä käytä hakulaite%a asioihin kuten sähkölampun vaihtoon tai pieniin veden ppumisiin. Voit tulla toimistoon täy%ämään huoltokaavakkeen ja siinä mainita korjausta vaavat asiat. 3.Keskiviikkoiset perhesaunavuorot ovat nykyisin kaikki varatut. Ole hyvä ja ota yhtey%ä toimistoon tammikuun loppuun mennessä, jos olet kiinnostunut hankkimaan saunavuoron, ja me yritämme löytää asiaan ratkaisun. 4.Pyyde,in asukkaita huolehmaan, e%ä toimistolla on kaikki oikeat ja ajankohtaiset henkilöedot arkistoissa. Tähän kuuluu hätätapauksien yhteydeno%oedot, lääkitys, terveyskor,numero ym. 5.Valitus esite,in kerroksien seurusteluhuonei%en käytöstä varastoloina. Meidän täytyy löytää ratkaisu liian tavaran kertymiselle. Tätä tapahtuu, kun perheet eivät vie pois kaikkia tavaroitaan muuton yhteydessä. 6. Pysäköimisasia: Ehdote,in, e%ä asukkaat ja vierailijat jä%ävät matkustajansa pysäköinalueelle ennen pysäköinpaikalle ajamista, koska lat ovat melko ukat erikoises katoksen alla olevat. 7. Laakot takaoven luona olevassa käytävässä ovat tarkoite%u ainoastaan käyte%yjä pa%ereita ja sähkölamppuja varten. Viime aikoina niihin on ilmestynyt kaikenlaisia esineitä, jotka eivät kuulu sinne. Kaikki pahvilaakot menevät ulkona olevaan niille kuuluvaan suuren roskalaakkoon. 8.Maarit kertoi tulevista ohjelmista ja kutsui kaikkia tulemaan mukaan. 9. Anne Ollikainen kertoi: Seitsemännessä kerroksessa tarvitaan vapaaehtoisia työntekijöitä ruokailujen au%amisessa. Hoivaosaston asukkaat ovat ikääntyneet huoma%avas ja tarvitsevat enstä enemmän apua. Ole hyvä ja ota yhtey%ä Arja Tolppaseen, jos voit au%aa iltaisin tai viikonloppuisin. Hän voi antaa lisäetoja ja koulutus myös järjestetään. Henkilökunta olisi hyvin kiitollinen avusta. Jalkahoitoa antaa asukkaille erikoises koulute%u sairaanhoitaja joka kuudes viikko. Maksu on $35.00, johon kuuluu jalka- ja säärihieronta. Ilmoitustauluilla ovat edot hoitopäivistä ja ajoista. Ajanvarauslista on toimistossa. Annen terveysklinikka on joka kuukauden kolmas keskiviikko B1:n kokoushuoneessa. Tähän kuuluu painon, verenpaineen ja verensokerin mi%aaminen kuten myös lääkkeistä keskusteleminen. Hän voi antaa neuvoja, selvennystä ja rohkaisua asukkaille. Tämä on ilmainen ja täysin Suomi-Kodin sisäinen palvelu. 10.Neuvomme, e%ei asukkaiden tarvitse maksaa ylimääräisiä kaapelimaksuja. Bell tulee varmaankin markkinoimaan palvelujaan Suomi-Kodin asukkaille uusi%uaan tuo%eitaan ja lai%eitaan. Bellin teknikot ovat vierailleet melkein kaikissa asunnoissa Suomi-Kodilla. Eräs asukas edusteli satellii,palvelusta. Tämä seikka ei ole ennen tullut esille eikä ole tutki%u sen mahdollisuudesta. Tällainen pyyntö täytyy tehdä Suomi-Kodin johtokunnalle. 8 Shoeless Joe A Love Story By Aulis Manninen It was a late spring afternoon, some children from the nearby school were in the park. The grass had come up and the little creek that ran along side was flowing with its cool clear water. The children, probably twelve or thirteen frolicked, chasing each other. In the midst was a young boy, fair haired and shy, carrying his shoes, in spite of the cool, damp grass. Nearby a cute dark haired girl noticed him and came up to him in inquisitively asking Why don t you wear your shoes, the ground is cold and you ll get a cold. The fair haired, shy boy responded; see my shoes, the soles are loose and I can t run with them. Get another pair replied the girl. I can t afford it, I have only two pair, a good shiny pair when I go to church on Sunday and these ones for everyday use was the answer from the boy, or Joe as he was called. Are you that poor to not afford another pair the dark haired girl or Josie as she was called, angrily told Joe. Joe being hurt on the inside, gave Josie a shove and she fell into the nearby creek. This was at the age when he hadn t yet learned to treat girls with respect. Quickly, Joe gathering his broken shoes from the ground where they had fallen, he raced home without looking back to see what had happened to Josie. The next morning, at school he noticed that she was not in class, but being very shy he was afraid to ask anybody why Josie had not come to school. The following morning after that being Friday, he still didn t see her and now he was troubled. Back home that evening he spent a restless time on his bed. What if she drowned when I pushed her into the creek, or maybe hurt her head? All night he wrestled with theses guilty thoughts. Saturday morning came bright and sunny, but Joe rose up very troubled. I need to find out. It will trouble me the rest of my life he said to himself. Putting on his clothes and his pair of good Sunday shoes, he raced down the sidewalk to the house where Josie lived a few blocks away. Coming to her driveway, he noticed Josie s mother getting out of the car with a bag of groceries. Hesitantly, he offered to help and at the same time enquire about Josie. But before he could take hold of the grocery bag, Josie came running out of the house ready to help her mom. As she saw Joe there ready to help her mom, she reacted questionably and in her mind asked why is he here? But before she could speak it out loud, Joe with a shy, concerned voice told her I hadn t seen you at school and wondered what was wrong and I came to say I m sorry for pushing you into the creek! The mother having gone inside already did not hear this conversation. Josie, her dark hair and twinkling eyes which had misted over, looked at Joe and with the biggest smile Joe had ever seen, responded but it was my fault for calling you Shoeless Joe. Joe realized now that Josie had not told her mom how she ended up in the creek and had taken the blame on herself. The school years went by quickly but a lasting friendship developed between Josie and Joe. 8

9 Having finished their respective schooling and attained good employment, their relationship grew deeper, and it wasn t long before Joe proposed to Josie and with a joyful heart and sweet smile she accepted. On the evening before their wedding as they were saying their goodnights, Joe whispered in her ear I have a surprise for you tomorrow, that being their wedding day. Josie didn t think much about this because of her eagerness for the next day to come. The wedding day came, bright and shiny and even the birds were singing a joyful song. As they had planned, Joe and Josie marched up to the front of the beautifully decorated church. Kneeling down at the front for the ministers blessing the guests let out an almost audible gasp and the mothers had to put their hands on their children s mouths to stop them from giggling. Josie so enthralled with the ceremony did not notice anything strange. After the ceremony, everybody went to the lower level for the reception and cutting of the cake. There were the usual words how beautiful the bride was, but absent was any mention of Joe. Josie cast an inquisitive eye toward Joe but he remained at ease. Finally she sensed something was amiss and whispered in Joe s ear. What is this surprise for me? Don t the guests like you because nobody has said anything good about you? Without a word, he directed her gaze to his feet under the table. In all her excitement she had not realized that he had been shoeless the whole time. The guests had noticed and that was the reason for awkward tension in the air. As Joe rose up from the table to give his prepared speech, she took hold of his arm and walked beside him to the front of the head table. There for all to see stood Joe without his shoes beside his lovely bride, now his wife. With tears streaming down her eyes she looked intently towards the guests who stared back, especially at the shoeless feet of Joe. You may think that I am embarrassed at my husband for this strange behaviour she firmly told the people, but no, I am proud of him as he stands beside me like this. It was I who first called him many years ago, Shoeless Joe because he couldn t afford another pair of shoes. Because of this act, we came to know and love each other and led me to be his wife. I love my Shoeless Joe The guests in their appreciation applauded her as they settled back to their place and Joe gave his thank you speech. Years later, on their wedding anniversary they take their children to the same park. Joe takes off his shoes and walks bare feet. The children ask why does daddy do this and she explains with a smile on her face, this is where I met my future husband and your father. No I am not embarrassed to see him without shoes. I love my Shoeless Joe. Footnote: Jesus was not embarrassed as he struggled with the cross on his back walking bare foot to Calvary. (John 19:17) 9
