Abstract This is the first national, representative survey on Finnish sexual life, sexual habits and sexual behaviour. At first, respondents were asked to indicate to what extent they agreed with attitudinal statements relating to sexual freedom, sex without love, women s right to take the sexual initiative, homosexual relationships, polygamy of men and monogamy of women, casual affairs, viewing pornography, sexual behaviour of young people and whether it is worthwhile to have children. Respondents health was charted by asking whether they had suffered from certain symptoms (e.g. headache) or illnesses (e.g. angina pectoris, cancer) during the past year. Smoking and drinking habits were surveyed. Women were asked about pregnancies, number of births (live or stillborn), miscarriages and abortions, and how many live children they had. They were also asked whether they had been pregnant at the time of their wedding and whether this was the reason for getting married. Sex education received was surveyed. Other questions examined the number of persons respondents had been in love with, did they fall in love easily, about disappointments in love and 2

Respondents were asked at what age they had experienced their first kiss, first steady relationship, first intercourse. Several questions pertained to the first-ever intercourse: where it happened, use of contraception, had the respondent wanted it, what was it like and did she/he regret it later and did she/he marry the first partner. Married respondents evaluated the happiness of their marriage and how important sex was to happiness. They were asked whether it was easy to discuss sex with their spouse. s covered how much sex respondents would like to have, how satisfactory sex was, how often they had sex, when was the last time and whether they had used contraception. The most recent intercourse was studied in detail: with whom, was alcohol consumed, who made the initiative, pleasantness of the experience, position used. Sexual foreplay habits were also charted. Female respondents were asked about reaching orgasm, fear of pregnancy, impotence of the partner and impact of menopause on sex. Male respondents were asked about experiencing impotence or other sexual problems and whether they had sought medical help. Other topics included extra-marital affairs, masturbation and sexual orientation. Respondents evaluated how satisfactory their sex life was on the whole. Study description aged (born ) The target population consisted of persons aged 18-54, living in Finland in November-December 1971, speaking either Finnish or Swedish, not in residential care and nor suffering from any serious mental or physical health problems. The size of the original sample was 2492 persons, of whom 138 were abroad, in residential care or unable to participate because of ill health. The net sample size was therefore 2354, of whom 81 refused to participate, 73 were not reached and 12 were not interviewed for some other reason. The number of respondents was In connection with the sex survey, a separate survey on fertility and family planning was conducted. Therefore, for the age group the original sample included twice as many women as men. The original sample consisted of 902 men and 1590 women. The sampled persons received a letter beforehand, informing them of the survey. Interviews were conducted by 1000 midwives and district nurses wearing their uniform. Most interviews took place in the respondent s home but about 10 per cent were conducted in the work place of the interviewer. On average, interviews took about 1,4 hours for men and 1,7 hours for women. After the face-to-face interview, the respondents were given a self-administered questionnaire containing the sensitive questions. This questionnaire was completed by the respondent in the presence but out of sight of the interviewer. The completed questionnaire was placed in an envelope, which was then sealed by the respondent. Of the interviewed persons, 36 did not complete the questionnaire properly. The final sample size was therefore 2152 persons. 1.4 Use of data Data appraisal The data do not contain responses to the questions 19-20, 22-30, 32-37, 39b - 42, 44, 46-50, 52-70, 72-73c, and of the interview questionnaire nor responses to the questions 10, 13, 17, 21, 23-27, section What am I like, 29, 32-35, 38-40, 45-53, 71_2, 79-83, 104, and of the self-administered questionnaire. There were 186 non-respondents. Women aged had the smallest non-response rate (6,2%) whereas men aged over 45 had the highest (16,1%). The overall response rate was 89,2% for men and 92,7% for women. The overall non-response rate was low but biased, making the validity lower for people living in bigger population centres and for older persons. However, even in those respondent categories where the non-response rate was the highest, it was still relatively low compared to non-response rates for surveys in general.
