MRI-sovellukset Ryhmän 6 LH:t (8.22 & 9.25)
Ex. 8.22
Ex. 8.22 a) What kind of image artifact is present in image (b) Answer: The artifact in the image is aliasing artifact (phase aliasing) b) How did Joe corrupted the k-space data? Answer: Joe corrupted the k-space by undersampling the phase FOV. He changed every other column in the k-space to zero vector so he could violate the Nyquist condition. In space domain this can be interpreted as decreasing the FOV in phase encoding direction (about 50%).
D Moratal et al. Biomed Imaging Interv J 2008; 4(1):e15
c) What correction to the contaminated k-space data resulted in the reconstruction shown in image (c)? Answer: Two possible solutions: 1) If original FOV (in phase direction) was large enough and John was able to identify the corrupted data, the corrupted data vectors can simply be removed from the k-space 2) If the identification of corrupted data is not possible then we can always use simple image cropping tool to achieve almost as good result as in picture (c).
D) What do you think John should do to reproduce an image like that in (a)? Answer: John should get a good quality measurement data, which is not corrupted. That is because once the data is corrupted the information is lost permanently. For example in this exercise John can not get the corrupted data back because he can not know what the data values were originally (unless he made a backup from the data of course).
Ex. 9.25 Discuss why with FISP at T R << T 2, it is better, in terms of SNR, to run two acquisitions at a shorter T R than one acquisition with a longer T R. Answer: FISP (Fast Imaging with Steady Precession) is a GE sequence in which only the phase-encoding gradient is set to zero ( rewound ) after the data acquisition. The general form of GE signal strength is: Where α is the flip angle and ρ is the proton density.
Ex. 9.25 Now since T R << T 2 and thus T R << T 1 the equation (1) becomes: From this equation we can see, that the signal strength is dependent only on the flip angle and the ratio of T 2 and T 1 and not on T R. Now since SNR is signal divided by noise, and the noise factor doesn t depend on T R, the SNR is increased as the signal strength is of the form (2). Now if we would use a longer T R the signal strength would be dependent also on the T R factors and the signal would be of the form of equation (1). Thus decreasing the SNR. So in terms of SNR it is better to run two acquisitions at a shorter T R than one acquisition with a longer T R. FSIP could be well suited for example for cardiac MR imaging. The imaging time is short (i.e. Compared to FLASH) and the contrast for blood is good.
