3 Over the last decade, the concept of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) has gained significant momentum in the insurance industry and beyond. This came with the recognition of risk as being something not per se to be avoided, but to be optimally exploited in the frame of a company s risk appetite. ERM is going beyond traditional risk management in that it is holistic, and encompasses strategic risk management as well as risk culture. Actuaries should see this as an opportunity to broaden their role, and to show that they are ideally equipped to carry out these tasks.

4 The CERA Enterprise Risk Management credential is the most comprehensive and rigorous globallyrecognised Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) designation. In general: CERAs are uniquely qualified to address all types of risk by virtue of their training in qualitative and quantitative aspects of enterprise risk management and their experience in integrating diverse insights into business solutions. CERAs are held to professional standards of conduct. Businesses that rely on CERAs can make smarter, more confident decisions related to complex risk management challenges affecting business and society. Goals from actuaries viewpoint: Strengthen international recognition of the actuarial profession s enterprise risk management (ERM) expertise Promote the development of more actuaries internationally with training in ERM Present new opportunities for actuaries worldwide to use their expertise in an expanding range of areas

9 The seminar deals with the concept of risk and the key elements of ERM. Topics that are discussed the contribution of ERM to value creation, ERM culture and the choice of a suitable ERM framework Reporting, monitoring and governance, Stakeholders Standards. An introduction to the modern theory of risk measures. First part discusses a number of statistical techniques that are highly relevant for the analysis of actuarial and financial data and for the modelbuilding process in risk management. (EVT, Bayesian models and credibility theory, dependence modelling) The second half of the seminar discusses various aspects of financial mathematics. (risk-neutral valuation, term structure and credit risk models.) The course consists of lectures and exercise sessions.

10 The seminar focuses on quantitative analyses of financial and non-financial risks of an life and nonlife insurance company. The discussion of each risk starts with its definition followed by qualitative and quantitative valuation approaches. The modelling approach according to the standard formula of SII and according to an internal model is explained. In addition limitations and criteria for the adequacy of a model for solving a given problem. Each section is closed by the use of model results in decision making and risk mitigation strategies. The focus is on the understanding of risk models and their results, and on the derivation of management actions. The present seminar deals with various tools and techniques available in the insurance business to mitigate risks that an insurer may not want to be exposed to. It includes a detailed and comprehensive discussion around the implications of reinsurance and securitisation. We will also present what life insurance companies subject to traditional with profit business can do to hedge their main risks. One slot will be dedicated to the measurement and management of operational risks. Further sessions include the management of credit risk, provide insight into portfolio management or explain hedging approaches for VA style insurance products.

11 This module deals with the requirements on ERM Processes and best practices and challenges of implementing ERM Processes. It will be presented how to define an organisation s risk strategy, risk appetite, risk tolerances and limits. We discuss how business strategy influences risk strategy and show their necessary interaction. We demonstrate the close relationship between ERM and Value and Risk Based Management. Economic capital in corporate management. Key aspects are economic valuation economic performance economic steering value based management A case study for a German life insurer shows in a nutshell the central aspects of corporate management in practice. We present the application of an internal risk control process, give an overview of the different reports and the main contents.
