Forest measurements: Stand parameters Forest contains upper and lower level vegetation - lower level vegetation (young trees and bushes, lower development class) is difficult to estimate. Upper level contains trees of higher development class - economically most valuable trees in forest industry. The value of a plot/stand in the forest is evaluated with stand parameters: Diameter of the trees, the median diameter Dgm (cm) Estimated height of the median tree Hgm (m) Estimated total volume of the trees V (m 3 /ha) Estimated total basal area of the trees G (m 2 /ha) Total number of stems (diameter over 5cm) in the plot N (no/ha) The best estimates for stand parameters are gained by field work - costs of the field work are relatively high. Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
Forest measurements: Lidar-data Laser-pulse transmitted from an airplane bounces back when hitting some object - the top or branch of the tree or ground. The height of the hitting point and the intensity of the bounced pulse is estimated. The first pulse and the last pulse are assumed to be bounced from the tip of the tree and from the ground. A set of first- and last-pulse measurements represent the stand of trees, in this case 0.5 pulses per square meter. Costs of the Lidar-measurements are relatively cheap. No straight construction of the stand parameters can be made from the Lidar-measurements. Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
From Lidar-measurements to stand parameters: Statistical estimates from the Lidar-pulses The shape of the height (and intensity) distribution of Lidar-measurements in the plot-area is transformed to plot-dependend statistical estimates. Possible estimates for height (intensity) distribution are e.g.: mean of the heights standart deviation of heights percentual hits of the height distribution points on a histogram with constant centers percentual height-points of the cumulative ordered height distribution percentual part of the heights that are under certain limit (percentual part of the points with no tree) Several statistical variables can be extracted from the distribution. The correlation between different variables can be high. Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
From Lidar-measurements to stand parameters: Statistical estimates from the Lidar-pulses The correlation between the variable-candidates and the stand parameters vary, none of the variables define any of the stand parameters completely as themselves. Number of the variable-candidates is relatively large (in this case 27+constant=28 variables), the best variables for each stand parameter need to be defined. Sparse Bayesian regression for one response Model introduced by M. Tipping. The aim in SBR is to obtain sparse solutions utilising models linear in parameters such that the model complexity is kept as simple as possible. n measurements of response t, which each depend on m different, possibly correlated variables X in the model. m may be large compared to n and majority of the candidate variables X are possibly not needed in the model. Response is assumed to be linearly dependent on the independent variables, t = Xw, where w is a m 1 vector. Regression model is based on the linear approximation t = Xw + ε, where ε is a n 1 vector of the normal distribution with zero mean and unknown variance σ 2, ε N(0, σ 2 ). Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
Sparse Bayesian regression for one response The m weights of the model have a conjugacy a priori distribution, with zero mean and independent variance α 1 i, i = 1,..., m, which, in case α i forces the weight w i to go to zero. P(w) = m i=1 N(w i 0, α 1 i ) = N(w 0, A 1 ) α i is a hyperparameter that must be defined. Mode of Σ w and µ of the posterior of w are analytically solved by defining: N(t Xw, σ 2 I n )N(w 0, A 1 ) = N(w µ, Σ w )N(t 0, C) where (β = σ 2 ) Σ w = (X T βx + A) 1 µ = Σ w X T βt. Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
Sparse Bayesian regression for one response Parameters and hyperparameters analytically estimated with type-ii maximum likelihood method: integrate first over the parameters w and then maximize evidence p(x, t α, β) over the hyperparameters. In this case, p(x, t α, β) = N(t Xw, βi n )N(w 0, A 1 )dw = N(t 0, C), where the (n n) covariance C is C = β 1 I n + XA 1 X T Thus the loglikelihood without constants is L = ln C + t T C 1 t. After some manipulation, the function to be optimized is L = n ln β ln Σ w ln A + (t Xµ) T β(t Xµ) + µ T Aµ. Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
Sparse Bayesian regression for one response Differentiation of the loglikelihood function L with respect to ln α i gives L lnα i = (Σ w ) ii α i 1 + µ i µ i α i = 0. where (Σ w ) ii is the i:th diagonal element of matrix Σ w and µ i the i:th element of vector µ. With a new variable, γ i = 1 (Σ w ) ii α i the estimate of the inverse of the variance of weight w i is α i,mp = γ i µ 2. i Virpi Junttila Data analysis in forest measurements
Sparse Bayesian regression for one response Differentiation of the loglikelihood function L with respect to lnβ, which gives L ( ) ( ) lnβ = n + tr Σ w X T X β + tr (t Xµ) T (t Xµ) β = 0. After some manupulation σ 2 MP = n tr (I Σ w A) tr ( (t Xµ) T (t Xµ) ) = n γi tr ( (t Xµ) T (t Xµ) ). This equals to OLS estimates when α i = 0 i, which means infinite variances for weight priors, that is, there is no a priori limitation for the weights.
