1 K i r k k o p u l l e t i i n i OF FINNISH LUTHERAN CHURCH November-December 2016 Message from Pastor Nina Hän (Kristus) tuli julistamaan rauhaa teille, jotka olitte kaukana, ja rauhaa niille, jotka ovat lähellä. Ef. 2:17. Pian alkaa adventti. Adventtiin kuuluu valoa. Me otamme valon säteet vastaan sytyttämällä ensin yhden kynttilän, sitten toisen, ja kolmannen, ja lopuksi neljä kynttilää. Jeesus on tuon valon lähde. Se on ilon, toivon, rakkauden ja rauhan valo. Jeesus sanoi, että hän on maailman valo, ja joka seuraa häntä on itse muuttuva valoksi tälle maailmalle. Myös sinä ja minä olemme ilon, toivon, rakkauden ja rauhan valo. Vikoinemme ja puutteinemme. Meidän pieni valo loistaa ja levittää valoa ihmisten pimeässä. Myös meidän rukouksemme on tuota valoa. Suomesta lähtenyt ja maailmalle levinnyt jokapäiväinen kirkonkellojen soitto kello Aleppon kärsimyksen puolesta oli tuota valoa. Maailmassa on paljon pimeyttä: julmuutta, epäoikeudenmukaisuutta, sotaa, väkivaltaa, kaikenlaista pahuutta. Tällä hetkellä 21,3 miljoonaa ihmistä joutuu elämään pakolaisena tuon pimeyden takia. Yli puolet heistä on lapsia. Hyvinvoivien valtioiden keskinäinen vastuunjako on epäonnistunut. Lisäksi on kaikenlaista muuta hätää ja kärsimystä kaukana ja lähellä, myös omassa lähipiirissä. Jumala itse tuli Kristuksessa julistamaan rauhaa meille kaikille. Johanneksen evankeliumissa sanotaan: Hänessä oli elämä, ja elämä oli ihmisten valo. Valo loistaa pimeydessä, pimeys ei ole saanut sitä valtaansa. Maailman epävarmuuden ja kaaoksen, ja kaikenlaisen kärsimyksen keskellä muistakaamme, että mikään pimeys ei voi saada Kristuksen valoa valtaansa. Siksi me voimme omalla pienellä paikalla loistaa ilon, toivon, rakkauden ja rauhan valoa. Siunattua Kiitospäivää, Adventtia ja Kristuksen syntymäjuhlaa teille kaikille! Kristuksen rauha olkoon teidän kanssanne! Pastori Nina He (Christ) came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near Ephesians 2:17 Soon starts Advent. Light belongs to Advent. We receive the beams of light by lighting first one candle, then two candles, three, and finally four candles. Jesus is the source of that light. It is the light of hope, joy, love and peace. Jesus said, that he is the light of the world and he/she who follows him, will become light to this world. Also you and I are lights of joy, hope, love and peace, with our flaws and weaknesses. Our small light shines in people s darkness. Our prayer is also that light. Finland started ringing the church bells every day at 5 PM for the suffering in Aleppo, and this spread all over in the world. It is also that same light. There is a lot of darkness in the world: cruelty, injustice, wars, violence, all kinds of evil. Currently there are 21,3 million people who are forced to live as refugees because of that darkness. Half of the refugees are children. The mutual share of responsibility in well to do countries concerning this matter has failed. In addition to this there are other kinds of distress and suffering around us, even close to us. God himself in Christ came to declare peace to all of us. We can read in the Gospel according to John: In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness did not overcome it. In the midst of the world s insecurity and chaos, and in the midst of all kinds of suffering, let us remember that no darkness can overcome the Christ light. That is why we can, in our own small places, shine the light of joy, hope, love and peace. Blessed Thanksgiving, Advent and the celebration of Christ s birth to all of you! 2 Auction, October 8, 2016 The auction was successful, despite the lower than usual attendance. The result was very comparable to previous years' result, thanks to very generous donations of auction items from the estates of Eero Tetri and Mervi Kintner, from Laila Ottelin and many, many other donors. A heartfelt THANK YOU to all, donors and volunteers, and not the least to all who made purchases to benefit the church. Our professional auctioneers, June and Roy Bruno once again did a terrific job, thank you to them also. The Finnish Choral Society sang a few songs and then the fun began. And thanks to Chef Gunnar we were, as usual, treated to a wonderful dinner after the auction. Holiday Season Donation Box We will seek to donate food and clothing during the Holiday Season: We have a large box that we want to fill for the Thanksgiving and again for the Christmas Season to help the less fortunate in the area with food and clothing. Please help us give help to others!! Bring non perishable food, toiletries, clothing to our donation box! Pastor from Finland for the Holidays Pastor Leena Kajanus arrives this week from Finland. She will volunteer with Finnish services on November 6 and 20, December 4 and 18. Pastor Leena will also help in the Finnish Services in Portland. Coming Events: Finnish Community Bazaar, Saturday November 12 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Nordic Heritage Museum. The church will have a table with baked goods and holiday items, Christmas presents, for sale. We need volunteers to help out at the table. Please contact Eva ( ) or any board member to let us know about volunteering. - Lunch with pea soup and sandwiches, etc. are served. Fiberarts Annual Christmas Sale - November in the Maki Hall at the church Nordic Heritage Museum, Yulefest, December Finnish Choral Society sings at 3 PM, Dec 20. 5 Finnish Lutheran Church Seattle, WA Phone Finnish Lutheran Church is located in Crown Hill, serving all the Finns in the Washington State area and people with any interest in Finnish language or culture. We have services both in English and in Finnish with Finnish Liturgy every Sunday at 10 am, everybody is welcome!!!! Finnish music is presented with our numerous and gifted members and friends. You are welcome to stay for a coffee and refreshments after church and get to know new people! From Lempi Wilson's writings: Ollaan taas vuoden lopulla. Valmistaudumme vastaanottamaan mieluista juhlaa, Kiitospäivää. Muistammeko alkuperäisen Kiitospäivän merkitystä. Oli tarkoitus kiittää Jumalaa runsaasta sadosta. Sato oli niin runsas, että kutsuttiin naapuritkin, natives, juhlimaan Taivaan Isän antimia. Kiitettiin Jumalaa siitä, että naapurien kesken oli sopua ja rauhaa. Nyt on sotaa ja erimielisyyttä ympäri maailman. Rukoilkaamme rauhaa ja yhteisymmärrystä kaikkien kansojen ja perheiden keskuuteen. Varmasti meillä jokaisella on paljon kiitoksen aihetta, kiittää Korkeinta johtajaa tästäkin vuodesta. Olimme keväällä kyllästyneet ainaiseen sateeseen. Sitten saimme nauttia koko kesän ihanista kukkivista puista, pensaista ja kukista. Oli todella lämmin ja pitkä kaunis kesä. Tässä on jo runsaasti kiitettävää. Voimme Kiittää Jumalaa pienistä ja suurista iloista, jotka antavat meille voimaa ja rohkeutta elää omaa elämäämme. Virsi 327, 3. Viettäkäämme kiitosjuhlaa, tulkaa Herran huoneeseen! Hyvyydessään Herra tuhlaa laupeutta lapsilleen. Kautta sukupolvien kestää armo Kristuksen.
