The Finnish Transport Agency FTA Is a multidisciplinary expert organisation specialising in transport Responsible for the Finnish transport infrastructure and the overall development of Finland s transport system: railway, road, maritime Annually purchases maintenance, planning, surveying and other similar services for about 1.6 billion euros, which represents about one-third of Finland s infrastructure field Value of the property about 19 billion euros Operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Employs 700 professionals FTA coordinates also ELY-centers (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment ) 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 3 Investointi
Infra FINBIM 2010-2013 One of six work packages in Built Environment Process Re-engineering (PRE) research program, is financied by companies, FTA and Tekes (The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) The goal is to develop and realize a new information modelling and automation based process and model. In the process the needed intelligent and information contents of different models can be created, used and utilized throughout the infra construction, rehabilitation and maintenance process and work phases. The process reaches the whole life cycle of the main infra products, i.e. highways, railways and bridges. The aim is to create and establish a systemic change into infra sector in Finland, which is needed to enable and support the comprehensive development and utilization of information modelling and automation potentials and possibilities. Also, the aim is to develop international competiveness into Finnish infra companies, other infra participants and research organizations. Infra FINBIM Vision Year 2014 large owners of infra structures are ordering just model-based services, which are used in all stages of project, beginning from order of design and ending to maintenance stage. New way of working All actors in the same boat: infra owners, designers, contractors, software producers, universities and research institutes Common working groups and open co-operation Annual developing plans and reporting for all partners Joint ownership of new knowledge Large public funding by Tekes Main contents Experiences from case projects Developing BIM-based processes for design and construction Developing procurement Developing general guidelines for BIM Developing LandXML-based InfraModel2 requirements for data transfer 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 5 Investointi
Infra FINBIM: benefits to be achieved Design and construction processes which are significantly more efficient than at present The total optimisation of chosen solutions User-Centeredness: 1. Compatibility of different designs, which is better than at present, and digital realtime control 2. Improved compatibility of different functions 3. Easing of cooperation in design, implementation and in the exchange of information 4. More reliable sources of information for the different stages of tender calculation; less risks and contradictions during work 5. The development of new methods through increased joint activities between the parties More efficient, error-free and faster operations for both the work site and the design Planning of savings and the total construction costs The development of an internationally competitive design and implementation process and new business areas Exploitation of a ready product in maintenance, development and in the basic repairs of a project. 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 6 Investointi

Short way Target is that once planned or modeled information doesn t disappear or it doesn t have to change in different format during different project phases. Planning in different phases Building Maintenance 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 12 Investointi

Information accuracy Initial data, existing structures like roads, pipelines, pile slab, Accuracy of initial data plays important role. Accuracy on design model depend on accuracy of initial data There is no guidelines about which kind on data should modeled in early stage. Common sense can be used and if data is needed in some point anyway, it doesn t change when time goes by or it plays important role it should be modeled as soon as possible. Model report plays important role. Model report is description of all data. It answers question like: Where data come from Is it modeled from the drawings Is the coordinate system original or is it change Is the made some kind of assumptions when modeled the data 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 14 Investointi
The purpose is that the design starts with a so-called initial data model which get more accurate during the design progresses. In the end of the design phase the initial data model is put together again and transfer to the next design phase. Initial data model Design Phase Design model Updated initial data model Next design phase Updated initial data 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 15 Investointi
Some projects whit BIM Kokkola-Ylivieska railroad, RU 3 30 km double track Procurement model is Design Build Long period 2013-2017 ->technology that is not possible now might be possible later. How to write requirements that enable development Initial data model is made before tender phase an are given to the service provider. Also original drawings are given. Aims for tendering phase Visualized the construction site Getting information about shearing models and data via internet Collect feedback from service provider Aims for planning and construction Visualized the csite onstruction Getting information about shearing models and data via internet 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 16 Investointi

Challenges Future archives? We still need 2D images. These can be more conceptual. Detail and working drawing could present in information models Who owns the original data and the native model? Software development through hole system. Model based quality control The entire life-cycle management Commonly accepted rules have not yet been formed 22.3.2013 Tiina Perttula 19 Investointi
