Research infrastructure: Definition and Criteria Research infrastructures Form a reserve of research facilities, equipment, materials and services Enable research and development at various stages of innovation Support organised research, researcher training and teaching Support and develop research and innovation capacity National vs local?
Which research infrastructures (RIs) should we support? Does the RI enable frontier research and provide added value? Does the RI have data and access policies for openess? Do the hosting institutions have a long term plan to support the RI? Does the RI have national and international relevance for researchers and beyond academia? Are the technical, institutional and personnel requirements feasible and sustainable throughout the whole life cycle of the RI? 5
Kulut on perusteltava hakemuksessa. FIRI - hauissa ei rahoiteta infrastruktuurien käyttökuluja. 6

Which costs are eligible? The funding is primarily allocated to investment costs (acquisition of equipment and systems and creation of services) at the construction phase and to significant upgrading of existing infrastructures. The equipment must be incorporated into an existing or upcoming national or international research infrastructure that is open to use by the scientific community. Permanent operating expenses should mainly be covered by funding from host organisations. Funding for salary costs is granted only in special cases, however, taking into account research-field-specific differences. The costs must be justified in the application. Funding needs arising from memberships in national and international research infrastructures (e.g. membership fees) can also be covered. The Academy does not fund operating costs of research infrastructures. 8
