Examples of written comments about aims-funding-guidance - Difficulties with funding, supervision focuses more on articles, less on dissertation itself - Organisational changes - The scope & aim of the dissertation 'became' clear, weren't at the beginning; (2) I was able to find support and guidance for my work but not from within the school - Information about courses has improved. - Introductory course is needed. - If the goal was to finish in four years I did not get enough guidance and my aims were not clear enough. However, I managed to do it in five years which means that aims and guidance was on at least an ok level. - Guidance was seriously lacking - Career planning was deficient 15

Feedback to study services 11. Did you get enough information and help with Excellent - questions or problems from Poor - Huonosti 0 1 10 14 3 Erinomaise the Doctoral Programme sti Study Services? - Pre-examination process is byrocratic. More collaboration between student and committee. 1 2 3 4 5 Yhteensä Keskiarvo - Program web-pages are not clear. Information about courses is not sufficient. Introductory course is needed. - Doct studies were a great experience. I got very thoughtful and efficient help from both the committee and student services. 28 3,68 - Process of graduation is complex. Information is not easily available but help from study services is well available. - The main difficulty was to have a clear action list for the doctoral dissertation demands and forms. - Instruction style was: "tuossa on kylmä vesi, yritä uida". - Why Aalto ENG does not allow an dissertation based on essays? - The courses I attended were well-arranged for the most part. I also had a post and a computer available at the laboratory, as well as decent experimental and computational facilities. - However, I had to plan and carry out my research too independently, which made the process unnecessarely hard. In my view, this happened due to lack of competence, time and/or motivation on part of the people responsible for guidance and supervision. I managed by overworking. - The problems I encountered in the research part of my studies were probably for a part due to the current 4-year doctoral programme not being fully instatiated in practice. - Changing requirements were hampering studies. - I would like to have more clear description about publication forums and number of publications suited for compendium type dissertatioin. 18
After graduation 13. Your employment situation after obtaining doctoral degree: Työllisyystilanteesi tohtoriksi valmistumisen jälkeen: 14. Does your current job relate to your education? Vastaako nykyinen työsi koulutustasi? 19

Some remarks Students gain good and useful professional and academic skills Typical graduation time in terms of active study time is not far from 4 yrs Funding situations vary Still variability in the level of supervision/instruction Career plans are not well considered Labor market looks positive 21
