Kulttuuriset taidot 7 Cultural competence understanding other people s behavior influenced by cultural aspects ability to behave in a way which would be correctly understood by people from other cultures Cultural competence does not only mean that a person has travelled a lot and seen different cultures; being a tourist does not necessarily make one culturally competent. A person with cultural competence: 1.Understands the reasons explaining the cultural differences 2.Holds a certain sensitivity towards the cultural differences which enables him/her to behave in a way which is not demeaning to others 3.Has the ability to use the knowledge gathered from the previous two points in order to understand his/her own culture.
Esimerkkejä hankalista tilanteista 8 In some countries faculty doesn t show respect to students; this is not the case in Finland. Faculty is friendly and expects students to address them friendly as well. Sometimes students e.g. from Mediterranean countries can be very offensive ( I am entitled to have a meeting with you or I insist to meet you ) in their communication with the faculty. This is not needed in Finland on the contrary, offensive communication usually destroys all the possibilities for getting your thing done! Faculty being friendly does not mean that teachers or secretaries want to be your friends. Even though they are friendly to you, you are expected to be active and take care of things on your own as much as possible!
Esimerkkejä hankalista tilanteista 9 Finns can be very straightforward in communication. This works the other way around as well we respect honesty more than excuses. If you have not completed your work on time, do not come up with stupid explanations. Remember that teachers have also been students and they have heard all the possible excuses already. Stupid excuses are very insulting teachers are not stupid! In the eyes of a Finn many e.g. Asian students seem timid and give very insecure impression. This is because in Finland being active is considered as a good thing! Thus, learn to get your things done efficiently and in an organized manner. Whenever you meet someone, be prepared!
