Background Due to rapidly rising wood material prices and hard competition in the market place, sawmills must fully exploit their raw material potentials under given market demand conditions. High quality logs > high quality lumber; Middle or even poor grade logs > value added wood products, e.g. wood components. Wood component provides a competitive alternative as a value added added sawn product. Copyright VTT Valtion teknillinen tutkimuskeskus 3
Challenges in wood component business Good understanding of the wood component market and customers needs, i.e. what to be produced and with what prices; Profitability issues have to be assessed with care. What raw materials suits certain type of wood component sawing most economically? Flexibility of production lines and process; Manufacturing costs are more sophisticated since component production involves much more material handling, production control and coordination activities. Conclusions The simulation model can be used in optimizing wood raw material use in wood components production; Newly devised wood component products can be virtually manufactured with the simulation model to assess its profitability; Changes in production inputs, such as product prices, raw material quality/prices etc, can be simulated to assess its profitability impacts; Reliable and detailed input data of raw materials are prerequisites for successful implementation of simulation research.
