Niitä tutkimalla korusarja sai muotonsa. Tunturimarja-korujen muotoilu ja hehkuvat lasihelmet toistavat samaa luonnon kauneutta." The designer Erja Hirvi was inspired for the Mountain Berry collection on her way to her studio when her attention was drawn by beautiful bushes suffused with glowing red: I took pictures of the berries and collected some vines to take with me. The collection found its form when I studied them. The design and shimmering glass pearls of the Mountain Berry collection reflect the same beauty of nature. 24

Rohkeaa, ennakkoluulotonta työtä modernin korumuotoilun kehittäjinä tekivät myös Kalevala Korun naissuunnittelijat Paula Häiväoja, Kirsti Ilvessalo ja Inger Lindholm. Heidän koruissaan aikakauden moderni muotokieli sai mielenkiintoisen tulkinnan. Inger-korusarja on nimetty suunnittelijansa Inger Lindholmin mukaan. In the 1960's, the reduced, pure-lined designs obtained a stronger position in the Kalevala Jewelry collections. Daring, open-minded development work in modern jewelry design was carried out also by female designers at Kalevala Jewelry: Paula Häiväoja, Kirsti Ilvessalo and Inger Lindholm. Their pieces were intriguing interpretations of the modern idiom of their time. The Inger collection was named after its designer Inger Lindholm. 25

Thor was the Viking god of thunder who used his hammer as a tool of rule and justice. When it thundered, people believed that Thor was riding across the vault of heaven in his carriage pulled by goats. The blows of his hammer created the peals of thunder and from the sparks of the hammer came lightning. The pendant depicting the hammer became known as the symbol for Thor and it was believed to protect its carrier from evil. The fearsome Vikings are known to have worn the pendant. 3490

60 JEWELRY KNOWLEDGE MARKS Jewelry marking has been part of jewelry manufacturing for a long time. Different markings indicate the time of manufacturing, material or manufacturer. Compulsory markings for precious metal products currently sold in Finland are the maker s mark and the hallmark for silver products that exceed 10 grams and for gold products that exceed 1 gram. Hallmarks and maker s marks are put on all precious metal products of Kalevala Jewelry. A year mark is put on the jewelry in the Classic collection. An inspection mark is also put on Kalevala Jewelry s gold rings. Some jewelry may also be subject to a procedure that is different from those mentioned above. Source: The maker s mark is a mark that the manufacturer has registered for themselves, and with the mark, the manufacturer can identify and individualise themselves and commit to take liability for the product and its compliance with the requirements. A maker s mark register is maintained by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency. KK is the maker s mark of Kalevala Jewelry and products manufactured by us have this mark. The hallmark indicates the concentration of the precious metal product. With the hallmark and the maker s mark, the manufacturer guarantees that the concentration of their products is correct. Kalevala Jewelry s gold jewelry is made of a gold alloy of 18 carats (75% gold, hallmark 750) or of 14 carats (58.5% gold, hallmark 585). Silver jewelry is made of sterling silver (92.5% silver, hallmark 925). As a result of EU policy, inspection marking has become optional for products that have a maker s mark on them. Products with an inspection mark have been tested by an independent inspection body in order to continue to ensure that the requirements set for the product are met. The Finnish inspection mark has a picture of a crown on a heart-shaped background. The year mark indicates the year the piece of jewelry was manufactured, which means that it continues to indicate the time of manufacture after a long time, and of course already upon purchasing. 61 RECYCLED GOLD/ SILVER AND ETHICAL PRINCIPLES Beginning in 2012, Kalevala Jewelry, the largest jeweler in the Nordic countries, will use recycled gold in its own production of gold jewelry and from the beginning of 2015 recycled silver in its own production of silver jewelry. Environmental awareness and ethical methods are in the core of Kalevala Jewelry s basic values. When developing its ethical principles of procurement, the company created an operations model for its key raw material suppliers to renew the practices in the sector and improve the transparency within the procurement chain, and the suppliers have committed themselves to it in writing. Our expert staff are happy to serve you at our premises in the Pitäjänmäki district in Helsinki. The maintenance service also includes the repair of old Kalevala Jewelry models. Older jewelry is brought to its former glory showing proper respect for it. The delivery time for repair and maintenance services is approximately 2-4 weeks. Kalevala Jewelry gold products are made of 14 carat gold. Kalevala Jewelry gold products can be cleaned with special cleaning agents for gold, available in jewelry shops. We recommend regular care for gold jewelry in which the jewelry is cleaned and polished at Kalevala Jewelry Service for a fee, and the setting of the stones is checked. Silver jewelry Kalevala Jewelry silver products are manufactured in sterling silver either clear or colored. The oxidization typical to silver may be cleaned off with a Kalevala Jewelry polishing cloth. After cleaning your piece of jewelry with a polishing cloth, you should wash the piece in mild soap water so the detergent from the cloth will not stain any of the clothing you wear. The Kalevala Jewelry polishing cloth is not suitable for cleaning any stones set in silver, and we do not recommend silver polish liquids for any of our silver jewelry. Oxidized silver jewelry can be cleaned at Kalevala Jewelry Service for a fee. Kalevala Jewelry s bright silver products are finished/protected with the nsilver method, which does not prevent but significantly slows down the discoloration of jewelry when showcased in stores. In the nsilver method, a very thin coating provides effective protection against air pollution, heat, gases, and chemicals. Coating can be renewed at Kalevala Jewelry Service for a fee. Bronze jewelry Kalevala Jewelry bronze products are manufactured either clear or colored. Bronze is an alloy that consists of copper, tin and zinc, and it typically oxidizes faster than precious metals. The new bronze jewelry all have a protective lacquer coating, which prevents the dark tone, typical to bronze, from discoloring skin and delicate light-colored fabrics. This lacquer coating is eroded by various chemicals and it also slowly wears off in use. Pearls We recommend you take off your bronze jewelry for the time you do sports, take a sauna or swim in chlorinated or salt water. Areas where the protective lacquering has worn off may be buffed with a Kalevala Jewelry polishing cloth. After cleaning your piece of jewelry with a polishing cloth, you should wash the piece in mild soap water so the detergent from the cloth will not stain any of the clothing you wear. If necessary, the protective lacquering can be restored at Kalevala Jewelry Service for a fee. The best piece of advice for those who wear pearls is this: put your pearls on last and take them off first. It is a good idea to wipe your pearls with a clean, soft cloth after each time you wear them. For jewelry with pearls we recommend regular care, for a fee, in which the jewelry is cleaned at Kalevala Jewelry Service and the stringing of the pearls is checked. We recommend washing with water, after each use, for all pieces of Kalevala Jewelry. We also recommend that jewelry items be stored in their original packaging. 62 GEMSTONES: DIAMOND Every diamond is unique. Diamond is a remarkable natural product with superior hardness, lustre and scintillation in comparison to other gemstones. Diamond is the hardest known natural substance which makes it an excellent symbol of eternal love. The commercial value of diamonds is determined by quality. Kalevala Jewelry uses the grading system of the Gemological Institute of America. The system has four quality factors: clarity, colour, cut and carat weight. Diamonds form in the mantle of Earth under an intense temperature and pressure. The forming of a diamond is something of a miracle in itself, and it is very exceptional that a discovered diamond has full clarity. The clarity grade of diamonds used by Kalevala Jewelry is VS (very slightly included). A diamond having no colour is more of a rarity factor than a quality factor. Totally colourless diamonds are discovered only seldom. Most diamonds sold for jewelry purposes have a yellowish tint. The focus is more on colourlessness than colour. Kalevala Jewelry uses diamonds of grade H (near colourless). Kalevala Jewelry uses brilliant and princess cut diamonds. Brilliant is the most common diamond cut. Of the four quality factors mentioned above, the quality of the cut has the most extensive impact on the appearance of a diamond. Well-proportioned dimensions, symmetry, polishing and light bring out the best in a diamond. Kalevala Jewelry uses diamonds of excellent cut. Diamond size is measured in carats (ct). Carat is a metric unit of measurement, and one carat is 0.2 grams. The size range of diamonds used by Kalevala Jewelry is ct.
