8 Rovaniemi The largest city in Europe Rovaniemi lies in a prime location at the place where two great rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki meet, so it is no surprise that it has a long history. Since early times it has been the gathering place for lumberjacks, traders, and handicraftsmen and it has been settled since the 1100s. The charter for the Municipality of Rovaniemi was drawn up in 1785 and it received city rights on Rovaniemi has always been the stopping place for those travelling north or coming south. Its widely renowned fair has attracted people from far and wide since 1880s. The 1920s saw the birth of tourism here with the building of the legendary Hotel Pohjanhovi, souvenir shops, viewing points, and finally, the start of the development at the Arctic Circle. The history of the city entered a new era at the turn of when the City and the Rural Municipality of Rovaniemi merged into one. 9 Open you eyes to the Arctic Arktikum is a superb place to start a trip to Lapland. With its grand glass roof, Arktikum houses the Regional Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The exhibitions extensively showcase the nature, cultures and history of the northern regions. Arktikum also allows you to experience the Northern Lights throughout the year, not even cloudy skies will stop you from having this experience of a lifetime. The large auditorium shows a video that tells about the changing seasons and the Northern Lights in their most astonishing forms. Arktikum also thoroughly tells what the Northern Lights are and how they are generated. Of the temporary exhibitions in Arktikum, perhaps one of the most interesting is the exhibition to mark the 100 th anniversary of Finland s independence 100 Objects, 100 Pictures. As the name suggests, a hundred objects and a hundred pictures are used to depict the history of Rovaniemi and its inhabitants during the past hundred years ( ). The majority of the pictures, archive material and objects exhibited have never been on show publically before. The sexhibition of Arktikum Science Centre dives into the flaming love and carnal delights in the freezing Arctic. Arctic region is known as cold and rugged. In real life things are hot all the time when Northern habitants feel the lust of the flesh. During early spring loyal alpha-wolves get cozy with each other. Horny bears meet and mingle with multiple partners in the summer heat, and straightforward mosquitos fasten to each other like a lock and a key. When nights get darker reindeer stags poke willing females of their harem. Not-so-hairy humans have succeeded to breed in the harsh Arctic with the same principles as staying alive: sheltering, eating and shagging. One still reminisces the surprising encounter in the nature s embrace, and another one dreams about the steamy pleasure in hot sauna. In the future science centre exhibition visitors can peek at the secrets of Arctic dating and mating. The intriguing subject is opened through fantastic facts, passionate pictures and erotic artefacts as well as stories. 10 Real celebration! Korundi House of Culture showcases a wonderful collection of Finnish modern art of the 2000s. The 30 th anniversary of Rovaniemi Art Museum and 75th anniversary of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation are together celebrated with the Real Celebration! exhibition. The exhibition made up from the collection of the Wihuri Foundation is a wonderful representation of Finnish modern art in the 2000s. There are a number of themes involved, including the everimportant forest for the Finns. Other themes include pictures of people, spatiality, lines and colour. The Wihuri Foundation has been contributing to Finnish culture for already 75 years. The partnership between the Art Museum and the Foundation began in 1986, when the Rovaniemi Art Museum was founded with a collection of five hundred art pieces donated by the Foundation. The collection was given more space when the museum expansion was completed in Altogether, the collection of Finnish modern art donated by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation holds over three thousand works and is one of Finland s finest collections of modern art. The collection has followed developments in Finnish art from the 1940s up to the present day. In addition to works made by famous artists, the collection also acquires works made by young and talented artists. The changes in art and new methods are evident from the collection. Yhtä juhlaa! Kulttuuritalo Korundissa on loppuvuoden ajan esillä upea kokoelma suomalaista 2000-luvun nykytaidetta. 30-vuotias Rovaniemen taidemuseo ja 75-vuotias Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahasto viettävät yhteistä juhlavuottaan Yhtä juhlaa -näyttelyn merkeissä. Wihurin rahaston kokoelmasta koottu näyttely luo hienon kuvan suomalaisen nykytaiteen 2000-luvusta. Mukana on erilaisia teemoja, kuten suomalaisille aina tärkeä metsä. Muita teemoja ovat ihmisen kuvaus, tilallisuus sekä viiva ja väri. Wihurin rahasto on toiminut suomalaisen kulttuurin hyväksi jo 75 vuotta. Taidemuseon ja rahaston yhteinen taival alkoi vuonna 1986, kun rahaston lahjoittamalle viidellesadalle teoksen taidekokoelmalle perustettiin taidemuseo Rovaniemelle. Kokoelma sai lisää tilaa, kun museon laajennus valmistui toukokuussa Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahaston lahjoittamaan suomalaisen nykytaiteen kokoelmaan kuuluu yli kolmetuhatta teosta, ja se on yksi Suomen hienoimmista nykytaidekokoelmista. Kokoelma on seurannut suomalaisen taiteen kehitystä 40-luvulta tähän päivään. Maineikkaiden taiteilijoiden töiden ohella kokoelmaan hankitaan nuorten, lahjakkaiden taiteilijoiden teoksia. Taiteen muuttuminen ja uudet menetelmät näkyvät kokoelmassa. TOP 3 kulttuurikohdetta Kulttuuripassilla koetaan Rovaniemen kiinnostavimmat kulttuurikohteet samalla lipulla. 11 Pilke tells you everything about Finnish forests The interactive exhibition of Science Centre Pilke is a fun and informative destination for the whole family. Located in the centre of Rovaniemi, Science Centre Pilke reveals to visitors the secrets of Finnish forests. The forests and timber have always been of vital importance for Finns. The forests have provided food and the timber has been used for construction. Timber has always been the most important raw material for Finnish industry. Finnish pulp and paper is exported to every continent worldwide. The forest is also a source of wellbeing for Finns; a place for pastimes, exercise and relaxation. The forest is an integral part of Finnish lives right from childhood and every Finn has some sort of relationship with the forest. The interactive exhibition of Science Centre Pilke is an animated and intriguing way of exploring what trees grow in Finland and how they are harvested and transported. Visitors can also experience what it is like to lose your way in the forest, sing forest karaoke, go hunting, and learn about thousands of products that can be made from wood. Best of all: you can touch everything in the exhibition! A massive forest harvester vehicle takes pride of place in the open plan exhibition space and each visitor can step into the cab and try what it feels like to harvest timber in a Finnish forest. At the Pilke information desk close to the main entrance, visitors can obtain information about trekking, fishing and hunting in Finland. Right next to the information desk is Pilke Shop that sells forest-related products. There are Finnish and Lappish design items, chaga mushrooms, sap lotions and a number of other great products from Finnish forests, and all made to be easy to take home with you. The Pilke building is also a fine attraction in itself, as it is one of Finland s largest woodenbuilt buldings. The name of the science centre, Pilke, means firewood, but it also means a twinkle in your eye. This sparkle of delight in the eyes is now available for every Pilke visitor! 14 Santa Claus Office is a cornerstone of the Arctic Circle The Santa Claus Office has been as destination for all friends of Santa Claus for decades. 15 The colourful Xmas Boulevard is Santa Claus Gift House, located in the Santa Claus Village, is a place where you can feel entertained all day. Christmas lights decorating Santa Claus Gift House shine 365 days a year. In the boulevard you will find Finnish design, savour authentic local Lappish food, and even take some handicrafts back as souvenirs. The Building also has the Arctic Circle Info, there to provide assistance with anything related to the Santa Claus Village. In the summertime, Santa Claus Gift House also has two sheltered terraces, one on the southern side of the building, and the other on the northern side. The Lohiapaja products are made from local ingredients This spring saw the opening of a shop in the Santa Claus Village selling Lappish delicacies. On the second floor of Santa Claus Gift House, the Lohi-apaja products are made from pure, local ingredients. The range has fish products, reindeer and elk in many different forms. You can also find other carefully selected local products. Lohiapaja products are prepared at the family-run processing plant located in the Vikajärvi region of Rovaniemi, 24 kilometres north from Rovaniemi. The processing plant also has a factory outlet. Lohiapaja products can also be found from well-stocked shops in Rovaniemi. While you are at the Santa Claus Village, you might like to try some meals prepared with Lohiapaja products in the Sirmakko restaurant that has been serving meals made from Lohiapaja s products for years. Lohiapaja staff will gladly help in advising how to best transport their products to different corners of the globe. Visitors are served by a busy bunch of entrepreneurs who are not afraid of work or speaking many different languages. Being a shopkeeper is not work, it s a way of life! This was a comment given by Petri Hoikka and Katy Harila who run the Tunturi-Tuote shop in Santa Claus Gift House. We have a superb group of entrepreneurs here, everyone working for the good of all. We are all infected with the Arctic Circle lunacy, which is of course a positive thing! Being a shopkeeper is not a job, it s a way of life! Petri and Katy run three shops in Santa Claus Gift House, so particularly during high seasons, they have plenty of work to do. Between the winter and summer seasons the entrepreneurs have a moment s break to take their own vacation. But, this is also the chance we get to come up with some great new ideas. In late spring, when this article was written, Petri received a box with a Christmas surprise inside: It s a mechanical orchestra that plays Christmas carols, an ideal product for the Santa Claus Village! The owners of Sirmakko are sixth-generation reindeer herders. We tell our guests true stories about Lapland, the Northern Lights, nature and the year of the reindeer, tell entrepreneurs Sami and Hanna Ruismäki. Sirmakko prepares Lappish food in ways that will appeal to everyone: Guests from different cultures prefer slightly different foods, and this is something we try to cater to. One of Sirmakko s most popular products is the Reindeer Burger. Although we are speaking of fast food, there s no reason not to always serve high quality. 19 A river cruise is the highlight of a sunny summer s day A cruise on M/S Kemijoen Helmi showcases the riverside nature of Rovaniemi. Situated at the confluence of two rivers, Rovaniemi offers great experiences on the water. The two-hour cruise with a view on M/S Kemijoen Helmi will show the town, the two bridges over the Kemijoki River, the Ounasvaara hill rising in the background, and the lush estuary of the Ounasjoki River. Carrying almost a hundred passengers, Kemijoen Helmi sails the river at a leisurely pace. The cruise is at its best on a summer s day when the sun shines lighting up the open skies of Lapland, but even a rain shower will not dampen spirits, as the boat is entirely sheltered. The cruise with a view welcomes passengers from Wednesdays to Saturdays 5 7 p.m. During the cruise, the fully licensed bar serves refreshments and snacks. In addition to the cruise with a view, Kemijoen Helmi does themed cruises with popular performers. Themed cruises depart on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Towards the end of the twohour cruise, you get to admire the Midnight Sun. 24 HUSKIES eagerly waiting for summertime visitors Husky Park is the home to around seventy furry huskies. Visit Husky Park to get to know these docile and peopleloving sled dogs. The husky park has seventy genuine, pure-bred Siberian Huskies, and two or three times a year the husky park celebrates the birth of lots of lively and cute husky puppies. The busiest time of the year for huskies is in the winter when snow covers the landscapes, but they can also give you a thrilling ride in the summertime. However, the weather has to be sufficiently cool, as the husky has very thick fur, so high temperatures and running huskies is not a good combination. The guided tour of the husky park takes place daily at noon, which is followed by a daily summer dog sled run at 12:30. You can also go for a walk with the huskies in the adjacent forest. Dog walk hikes are also arranged late in the evening in the glow of the Midnight Sun or the wondrous shining Northern Lights in late summer. Evening dog walks include frying sausages over the campfire. Husky Park also arranges an exciting way for you to cross the Arctic Circle that involves drinking a magical Lapland Shaman cocktail and hearing tales about Lapland. For instance, we sell a lot of smoked reindeer chocolates. My own favourites at the moment are liquoricebased chocolates. Rajanen finds making chocolates a fascinating job, but a challenging one. Choco Deli Due to its composition and sensitivity to temperature, it is a difficult ingredient to work with. Conditions have to be just right in order to be able to work with chocolate. Choco Deli is the only chocolate shop of its kind in Lapland. In addition to customers from Finland, people from every corner of the globe buy their chocolates. Entrepreneurs Riikka Määttä and Riikka Pusa set up the boutique last winter with the aim of literally offering tourists a piece of Finland. All our products are designed in Finland, and about 50% we make ourselves, tells Riikka Määttä. We have good Finnish brands and smaller, local products. Your Piece of Finland s product collection is wideranging. There s clothing, jewellery made from wood and reindeer hide, wooden wristwatches and sunglasses, leather bags, Finnish superfoods, and plenty more great items. Your Piece of Finland is also a great place to go and browse. All the furnishings and displays for the boutique have been tailor-made for the Kalotinlinna shop from Finnish birch, while the décor has both Lappish and Finnish elements, and the walls are decorated with spectacular paintings of Lappish nature. Satu Antinkaapo, tells that the cakes and pastries are made at the café using fresh ingredients, the most significant of which are the locally sourced berries. The cafeteria also provides sweet and savoury pastries, layer cakes and other confectionary delights to take away. Trendy Café & Bar 21 Café & Bar 21 is a trendy cafeteria located in the heart of the Rovaniemi city centre that serves such established favourites as its sweet and savoury waffles and plentiful salads. 29 OUNASVAARA We come here every summer is a comment often heard from satisfied holidaymakers who have experienced the Ounasvaara Summer Bobsleigh. Ounasvaara Summer Bobsleigh is an activity suitable for the whole family, as the track is safe and speed can be controlled by the riders themselves. This very popular bobsleigh run starts from the top of the hill, with breathtaking views of Rovaniemi s spectacular river landscape: the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers, and of course the town itself. The traditional chairlift takes bobsleigh riders from the lower ski lift station up to the starting point for the bobsleigh run. Once the riders reach the top, the staff provide instructions on how to control the bobsleigh, making it a safe and easy activity. The bobsleigh run winds its way through the pine forest. The bobsleigh run is a chute made from steel that runs for 750 metres with a height difference of 110 metres. The bobsleighs are meant for one or two people. Every bobsleigh has a brake, so the rider can control the speed to suit them best. If the bobsleigh run seems a little too thrilling, you can choose a panoramic ski lift ride in a single direction or both ways. At the lower ski lift station there is a kiosk that sells tickets, as well as ice cream and soft drinks. Close to the lower ski lift station you will find mini-atv rides, you can play summertime games for free and even bounce around in the bouncy castle. Another outstanding destination in Ounasvaara is the Rollo MTB Bike Park where you can ride along marked downhill and mountain bike trails. You can ascend to the top of the hill with your bike taking the chairlift. 31 Lapland tips for motorists Lapland has an enormous number of fascinating destinations for the whole family. The birthplace and atelier of artist Reidar Särestöniemi in Kittilä Factory The Särestöniemi Museum is the former home of the prominent Lappish artist Reidar Särestöniemi ( ) located in the village of Kaukonen in the Kittilä Municipality. The grounds of the museum hold the birthplace and home of the artist, including the gallery and atelier commissioned by Reidar Särestöniemi. The newest building in the area is the cafeteria designed by architect Raili Pietilä. The museum displays nearly five hundred works of art, a collection donated to the museum by Reidar s brother Anton Särestöniemi ( ). Gemstones are excavated in Luosto The Lampivaara Amethyst Mine introduces you to this violet-coloured gemstone. The mine is located at the top of the fell and can be reached either by hiking or using an electric bicycle that can be hired from Luosto s Little Mine Shop. Visitors can dig up their very own gemstone to take home with them. The Lampivaara sky programmes continue during the summertime with admiring the rays of Midnight Sun. Lapland s largest village shop is found in Ylläs Jouni Kaulanen founded the Jounin Kauppa shop in Äkäslompolo back in 1950 when the village only had eleven buildings and two holiday homes. Nowadays Ylläs is a ski resort that boasts accommodation for tens of thousands of visitors and the thirdgeneration shopkeeper, Sampo Kaulanen, currently runs Lapland s largest village shop. Seen on television in a reality television show, Sampo and the shopkeeper s wife Michele already have their fourth shopkeeper generation growing up in the back room! Jounin Kauppa has a cafeteria, restaurant, chemist, taxi, petrol station, and holds a whole host of other businesses from a sports shop to a natural remedy treatment clinic. Conquer the highest summit of Saariselkä Standing at a height of 437 metres above sea level, the Kaunispää summit gives visitors a 360-degree panoramic view reaching tens of kilometres into the distance, with even the Russian fell highlands visible on the horizon. You can either hike or bike to the highest summit of Saariselkä, which is located only two kilometres from the centre of the Saariselkä resort. You can also reach the summit by car from the E4 highway using wide, winding surfaced roads that are in good condition. Tourists are served by the Tuliaistupa souvenir shop and the atmosphere-rich cafeteria-restaurant that welcomes visitors for coffees and pastries or lunches. Lappish dinner menus are served to order. Following its expansion, the restaurant will open its doors by Midsummer s Eve. Open daily through to late summer 10 a.m. 7 p.m. After this time the restaurant is open 10 a.m. 5 p.m. The lives of the gold diggers at Tankavaara At the Tankavaara Gold Village in Sodankylä guests can explore the lives of the gold diggers of the northern wilderness and get to dig for their own genuine gold nuggets to take home with them. The main street of the Gold Village, that resembles a Wild West town, will host the Gold Mölkky Competition on July. The Old Gold Prospector Restaurant & Café serves delicious meals made from local ingredients, and accommodation is also available at the Gold Village in the Gold Prospectors Cabins or in the modern Korundi apartments. 32 Centre for Sámi culture in Inari Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sámi, is a spectacular window into northern culture. Siida has two permanent exhibitions combining culture and nature to form the entirety. The walls of the exhibition display huge, back-lit images showing the course of twelve months in Lapland s nature. Embedded in these images are other drawings, texts, dioramas and videos. The nature photographs are supplemented with fascinating objects displayed in glass cabinets. On the mid-floor, there are photographs that are embedded in the floor with installations depicting the lives of the indigenous Sámi. This magnificent exhibition hall is perfected with a natural light skylight that divides the hall into summer and winter halves, and the audio is motion-activated by the movement of its visitors. In addition, during the summertime Siida has a beautiful outdoor exhibition area. Siida also houses the Metsähallitus Nature Centre, Sarrit Restaurant and the Siida Shop. Nuorgam the shopping paradise on the Norwegian border By its size, Nuorgam, with its population of just over a hundred inhabitants, is Finland s most active village. The road running through the village covers a distance of a few kilometres and houses around a dozen businesses: two grocery stores, two hardware stores, a clothes shop, service station, Alko off licence, a holiday village and many different service points. Nuorgam also serves Finland s northernmost burger. The vitality of the Nuorgam village is thanks to the busy shopping trips done mainly by the Norwegians, but the village is also a pleasant place to visit for motorists travelling around Lapland. Nuorgam is located above the tree limit in an open expanse of landscape between the Tenojoki River and the Isovaara highlands. The village road ends at the border of Norway that is supervised by a customs station manned jointly by the two nations. The distance to Nuorgam from Rovaniemi is 510 kilometres and 47 kilometres from Utsjoki. Tervola with its three churches Located between the cities of Rovaniemi and Kemi, the Tervola parish has only 2,700 members, yet the municipality boasts three working churches. The old wooden church was built back in 1687, with a newer church next to the old church that was built in As the parish decreased in size, the newer church became too large and too costly to heat, that in 1974 a new church and parish hall was built for the municipality. All three churches in Tervola are still in operation, but the old church and big church are rarely heated during the cold months. Nevertheless, the big church still sees people gather for Christmas Eve mass, indeed sometimes in extreme freezing temperatures. The churches of Tervola belong to the Road Church network. 33 The happy and lively polar bear cub charms visitors in Ranua At the Ranua Zoo, the little polar bear boy cub spends its days playing and exploring its world under the tender loving care of its mother Venus. Bhorn in the Ranua Zoo last winter, the polar bear cub is a happy and lively little boy cub. Watching the cub play is very entertaining. In the spring, the cub plays around in the snow and slides down hills, tells Zoo Director Tommi Hinno. In early summer it took its first swim in the pool, tried out some diving, and even went underwater to fetch the delicious snacks thrown in by the zookeeper. Aged six months, the polar bear boy cub still has no name. The friends of the zoo have until the end of August to come up with a name for the zoo s newcomer, either by making their suggestions online or when visiting the zoo. Perhaps the best way to come up with a perfect name for the cub is by visiting the zoo and witnessing what it gets up to, then deciding what name would suit him best. The polar bear is the world s largest land-living mammal beast. Ranua s polar bear sow, Venus, weighs about three hundred kilograms and the boar, Manasse, weighs twice that. Nevertheless, the cub of these giant bears is very small when it is born: Ranua s new cub weighed in at only half a kilogram when he was born. However, the weight of the cub started to go up quickly, as it fed on the nutritious milk of its mother, to later feast on fish, carrots and other special delights. In early summer it was about the size of a medium-sized dog, but you can tell from the size of his paws that he will soon be a lot bigger. In addition to the polar bear cub, the zoo is expecting to see young from other animals as well. The family of wild boars expanded with stripy-coated piglets, and the muskox is expecting a calf. The animal young are expected in the end of May to the beginning of June, and by Midsummer they will be so large that they will start to show themselves to zoo visitors. 32 travel Rovaniemi travel Lapland 2/2017

34 Iloinen ja vilkas jääkarhunpentu ihastuttaa Ranualla Ranuan eläinpuiston viime talvena syntynyt jääkarhunpentu on iloinen ja vilkas poika, jonka touhuja on mukava seurata. Keväällä pentu telmi lumessa ja laski mäkeä. Alkukesällä se pääsi uimaaltaaseen uimaan, tekemään uimahyppyjä ja sukeltamaan eläintenhoitajan heittämiä herkullisia makupaloja. Puolen vuoden ikäisellä jääkarhupojalla ei ole vielä nimeä. Eläinpuiston ystävät saavat elokuun loppuun asti ehdottaa tulokkaalle nimeä internetissä tai paikan päällä eläinpuistossa. Jääkarhunpennun lisäksi eläinpuistoon on tulossa poikasia myös muille eläimille. Villisian perhe kasvaa lystikkäillä raitapaitaisilla possuilla, ja myskihärkä on saamassa kilin. Parhaiten eläimet ovat esillä päivittäisissä ruokintanäytöksissä, joissa eläintenhoitajat kertovat eläimistä ja niiden tavoista. Jääkarhujen ja karhujen ruokinta on klo 12.30, vuorisusien klo 14 ja saukkojen klo Vuorisusi eli dhole on yksi suosituimmista puiston eläimistä. Dhole on erittäin uhanalainen laji, ja sitä on maailmassa vain noin 2500 yksilöä. Ranuan eläinpuistossa on myös kotieläinpuisto, joka on auki kesäkuun alusta elokuun loppuun asti. Kotieläinpuiston ruokintanäytös on päivittäin klo Ranuan eläinpuistossa on takana kaikkien aikojen vilkkain talvisesonki, ja kesäkaudella vieraita on tulossa vielä enemmän. Kaikki halukkaat mahtuvat mukaan, mutta majoituksen suhteen kannattaa olla nopea. Eläinpuiston väki suosittelee tekemään varaukset lomakylä Gulo Guloon, camping-alueelle, hotelli Ilveslinnaan ja Ranuan mökkikohteisiin ajoissa. Suurta vierasmäärää palvellaan eläinpuistossa tänä kesänä myös tarjoamalla hyvää ruokaa. Lounasta voi nauttia Wild Arctic Restaurantissa ja White Swan Cafessa. Eläinpuiston vieraiden mukavuuteen on varauduttu myös lisäämällä henkilökunnan määrää: eläinpuistossa on kaksisataa eläinyksilöä, ja melkein sata työntekijää! The best times to see the animals are during feeding demonstrations when the zookeepers tell about the animals and their habits. Feeding of polar bears and brown bears is at 12:30, dholes at 2 p.m. and otters at 4:40 p.m. The dhole is one of the zoo s most popular animals. The dhole is an endangered species with a population of only around 2,500 adults. Dholes don t bark or howl like dogs or wolves, they have their own special whistle sound. Ranua Zoo also has a Domestic Animal Park that is open from the beginning of June through to the end of August. Visitors can pet the animals at the Domestic Animal Park, and horse rides are also arranged. Feeding demonstration at the Domestic Animal Park is organised open daily at 2:30 p.m. Ranua just had a record winter season, and even more visitors are expected for the summer months. There s plenty of space for everyone, but it s well worth reserving your accommodation quickly. The people at the zoo recommend making reservations for Holiday Village Gulo Gulo, the camping ground, Hotel Ilveslinna and the private cabins in Ranua in good time. If the accommodation is fully booked, you can easily reach Ranua from Rovaniemi by bus, with a service that departs in the morning and returns in the afternoon. The bus departs from Rovaniemi Bus Station. The large number of visitors to the zoo this summer is also served excellent food. Lunch is served at the Wild Arctic Restaurant and Café White Swan. 36 Juuni & Olkimaa Jutajaiset on kesän rennoin festivaali Folktapahtuma Jutajaiset palaa Rovaniemen kesään Jutajaiset on uudistunut kolmipäiväiseksi kaupunkifestivaaliksi, jossa tuodaan esiintyjien ja yhteistyökumppanien voimin esille erityisesti pohjoista osaamista. Tapahtumassa nautitaan tänä kesänä musiikista, tanssista, stand upista, teatteri- ja sirkusesityksistä sekä pelimannikonserteista. Esiintyjinä ovat muun muassa YLVA, Juuni & Olkimaa, Wimme & Rinne, Tötterssön, Loiskis, Tanssiteatteri Tsuumi ja monet muut upeat artistit. Juhla alkaa Ounaskosken rannassa, Jätkänkynttilän kupeessa perjantaina klo 17. Tapahtuma on osa suurta Hulahula Suomi -kampanjaa, joten tapahtumasta saatetaan nähdä pätkiä Ylen suorassa juhannusaaton TV-lähetyksessä. Viiden tunnin mittainen tapahtuma kokoaa Jätkänkynttilän kupeeseen kaikki Rovaniemellä kaupunkijuhannusta viettävät ihmiset vauvasta vaariin. Luvassa on laulua, tanssia, hyvää ruokaa ja kesäistä tekemistä. Illan huipennus tanssitaan Robinin biisin tahdissa. Tavoitteena on tehdä epävirallinen tanssin maailmanennätys, joten kannattaa tulla mukaan. Tanssityyli on vapaa! Rovaniemen Wanhat Markkinat elokuussa Suomen suurin vapaaehtoisvoimin toteutettu hyväntekeväisyystapahtuma järjestetään Rovaniemellä yhdeksättä kertaa. Teemana tänä vuonna on Suomi ja Lappi kotimaa 100 vuotta. Tapahtumapaikka on Vanha Tori ja Jätkänpuisto. Rovaniemen Wanhat Markkinat on kerran vuodessa järjestettävä koko kansan tapahtuma, joka pitää yllä vanhoja markkinaperinteitä. Wanhoilla Markkinoilta myydään perinteisiä käsitöitä, mutta tavanomainen rihkama ei kuulu valikoimaan. Markkinoilla on myös runsaasti esiintyjiä ja kilpailuja sekä muuta näkemisen arvoista viihykettä. Markkinoiden tämän vuoden hyväntekeväisyyskohde ovat Lapin keskussairaalan pitkäaikaissairaat lapset ja heidän omaisensa. The white nights of Lapland A white night is when the sun does not sink below the horizon. This is an arctic phenomenon, and it is offset by the winter twilight when the sun does not rise above the horizon. This is because of the earth s position in relation to the sun: in summer, the northern hemisphere receives more sunlight than the southern hemisphere. Rovaniemi is on the Arctic Circle, the boundary for these natural phenomena. At this latitude, the sun rises for the last time on the 6th of June and does not set until the 7th of July. The sun is at its zenith at the summer solstice on the 21st of June, just before midsummer. Midsummer night is associated with magic. Young women hope to dream of their future husbands if they place nine different flowers under their pillow. Midsummer has traditionally been the celebration of fertility and it has long been a popular day on which to get married. Night reclaims its victory when we reach the autumn equinox on the 23rd of September. Lapin valoisat yöt Yötön yö tarkoittaa, ettei aurinko laske horisontin alapuolelle. Kyseessä on napa-alueiden ilmiö, jonka vastakohta on talvinen kaamos, jolloin aurinko ei nouse horisontin yläpuolelle. Tämä johtuu maapallon asennosta aurinkoon nähden, kesällä pohjoinen pallonpuolisko saa enemmän auringonvaloa kuin eteläinen.
