Population density: 8 people per km². Capital of Finnish Lapland, located on the Arctic Circle. Rovaniemi was released from the continental ice sheet 9,000 years ago but the area remained under water, with only the highest hills forming islands. The area of the current city centre became free of its water cover 7,000 years ago. Rovaniemi life is broadcasted over the internet: there are webcams showing the Lumberjack Candle Bridge and Ounaskoski bridges, the main library, Ounasvaara ski centre and Lordi s Square. 7 Welcome to the Hometown of Santa Claus! Rovaniemi s most loved inhabitant meets visitors in the Christmas House and in his own Santa Claus Office. Rovaniemi is a true land of Christmas, as the town has a fine white Christmas and a magnificent wilderness that is home to Santa s velvet-nosed, antlerheaded reindeer. Rovaniemi is also the Official Hometown of Santa Claus. There is only one Santa Claus, but he can be met in a number of different places in the town. 11 Sertifikaatti ja valokuva Napapiirin ylityksestä Talvinen poroajelu Joulupukin takapihalla täydentyy nyt passilla, joka todistaa matkailijan ylittäneen Napapiirin. Ulkona riehuu lumimyräkkä, mutta Santa Claus Reindeer -porokylän Kotahovi-ravintolan avotulen loimussa on lämmin tunnelma. Perheyrityksen isäntä Ari Körkkö lisää koivuhalkoja tuleen. Ottakaa kuumaa kahvia, se lämmittää lumimyrskyn jälkeen! Santa Claus Reindeer porokylästä lähdetään mukaville poroajeluille Napapiiriä ympäröiviin metsiin. Poron peräpäästä ajelun aikana putoavia papanoita ei pidä säikähtää: Se on poron oma tapa pudottaa ylimääräistä painoa kyydistä pois, Körkkö sanoo hymyillen. Santa Claus Reindeer -porokylässä voi tästä keväästä alkaen suorittaa virallisen Napapiirin ylityksen porokyydillä. Ajelijan palattua reitiltä hän saa ylityksestä muistoksi A3- valokuvan ja sertifikaatin, jota kelpaa näyttää kotiinpaluun jälkeen ystäville. Talon tunnelmallisessa näyttelyssä tutustutaan myös jouluperinteisiin ja tonttujen lelupajaan. Mukava uutinen on, että kotikaupungissaan Pukki tekee kotikäyntejä ympäri vuoden: Joulupukki käy tapaamassa kilttejä lapsia ja aikuisia myös joulun jälkeen, vahvistaa Joulutalon emäntä Inga Jääskö. Joulutalon läheisyydessä voi myös yöpyä. Joulupukin omassa lomakylässä Santa Claus Holiday Villagessa yhdistyvät mökki- ja hotellimajoituksen parhaat puolet: Majoitus on mökeissä, joissa on oma rauha olla ja asua, mutta toimimme hotelliperiaatteella eli vuoteet on sijattu ja aamiainen nautitaan ravintolassa, kertoo Marko Jääskö. 15 TUNTURIN TUNNELMAA keskellä kaupunkia Ounasvaaran rinteiden määrä on kasvanut jo yli kymmeneen. Ounasvaaran hiihtokeskus tarjoaa Rovaniemellä tunturimaiset olosuhteet parin kilometrin päässä keskustan palveluista. Rinteistä avautuu upea maisema yli kaupungin ja Kemijoen. Hiihtokeskuksen rinteiden määrä kasvoi jo yli kymmeneen, kun Tottorakkaan avattiin vapaalaskijoille uusi täyspitkä off-rinne ja Tree Ride Park -metsälaskualue. Tottorakan ja päärinnealueiden välillä on kaksi loivaa valaistua siirtymäreittiä. Päärinnealueen lastenrinteen lisäksi keskuksessa on erillinen, aloittelijoille suunnattu Rendin Lumimaa karuselleineen, tuubimäkineen ja loivine rinnealueineen. Ensilumenrinne sekä samaan aikaan marraskuun puolivälissä avattavat Rendin Lumimaa ja ainutlaatuinen Talvikelkkarata tarjoavat talvisen käyntikohteen heti Rovaniemen joulumatkailukauden alusta alkaen. Maastohiihtäjien ensilumenlatu avataan hiihtokeskuksen ja liikuntakeskus SantaSportin OIympic Training Centerin välille. Talvikaudella Rovaniemellä on noin 200 kilometrin latuverkosto. Hiihtokeskuksen vuokraamossa on tarjolla lasketteluja maastohiihtosuksia, lumilautoja ja -kenkiä sekä suksien ja lautojen huoltoa ja perusvoitelua. Ounasvaaran hiihtokoulussa Ounasvaaralla on yli sadan kilometrin latuverkosto tarjotaan opetusta sekä lapsille että aikuisille. Esimerkiksi yksityisopetuksena tarjottava Easy Start -paketti sisältää kahden tunnin hissilipun, välinevuokran ja 45 minuutin oppitunnin, jonka jälkeen voi syventää oppimaansa reilun tunnin ajan omaan tahtiin. Ulkoillessa tullut nälkä taltutetaan Tottorakan latukahvilassa tai hiihtokeskuksen Alpenjagerravintolassa. Ravintolan nimi juontaa juurensa vuoteen 1943, jolloin saksalaiset ja itävaltalaiset alppijääkärit raivasivat Ounasvaaran ensimmäisen laskettelurinteen. Ounasvaaran hiihtokeskuksen läheisyydessä voi myös majoittua. Chalet Hotel Rovaniemi on hotellitasoinen lomakylä hissien ala-aseman tuntumassa. Päähissien yläasema taas sijaitsee Hotel Sky Ounasvaaran pihapiirissä. Ounasvaaran Lakitupien lomaasunnot löytyvät vaaran laelta latuverkostojen keskellä. 16 SKI RESORT ATMOSPHERE in the centre of town The number of downhill skiing slopes at Ounasvaara has increased to exceed ten. The Ounasvaara Ski Resort offers fell highland-like conditions in Rovaniemi, located merely two kilometres from the services of the town centre. The ski slopes provide fantastic views over the town and the Kemijoki River. The increased number of ski centre slopes means there are now over ten slopes to ski, as a new full-length off-piste slope and Tree Ride Park forest skiing area have been introduced for extreme skiers in the Tottorakka skiing area.between Tottorakka and the main ski slope areas are two gently sloping, lit transfer routes. In addition to the children s slope in the main ski slope area, the ski centre also has Rendi s Snow World, with its snow carousel, snow tubing hill and gently sloping area. Opening in mid-november, the First Snowfall Ski Slope, Rendi s Snow World and the unique Winter Tobogganing Run offer a wintery attraction in Rovaniemi each year right at the start of the Christmas season. The first snowfall crosscountry skiing trail running between the ski resort and SantaSportin OIympic Training Center opens as early as late October. During the winter season Ounasvaara has a network of cross-country skiing trails covering over two hundred kilometres. The ski resort s hire shop has downhill and cross-country skiing equipment, snowboards and boots, as well as servicing and waxing of skis and boards. The Ounasvaara Ski School The Ounasvaara Ski School offers skiing instruction for adults and children alike. offers skiing instruction for adults and children alike. For example, the Easy Start private skiing instruction package includes a two-hour ski pass, equipment hire and a 45-minute lesson. After the lesson, the skiers can practice their newly learned skills at their own pace for over an hour. All the outdoor activity is sure to build up your appetite, and you can satisfy your hunger at the Tottorakka ski trail café or at the ski resort s Alpenjäger Restaurant. The name of the restaurant dates back to 1943 when the German and Austrian mountain infantry cleared the way for the very first downhill skiing slope at Ounasvaara. Accommodation is also available close to the Ounasvaara ski resort. Chalet Hotel Rovaniemi is a hotelstandard holiday village located right next to the lower ski lift. The top point of the main ski lifts on the other hand lies within the grounds of Hotel Sky Ounasvaara. Ounasvaara Lakituvat chalets are located on the top of the Ounasvaara hill, right in the heart of the crosscountry ski track network. 17 Pilke tells you everything about Finnish forests The interactive exhibition of Science Centre Pilke is a fun and informative destination for the whole family. Located in the centre of Rovaniemi, Science Centre Pilke reveals to visitors the secrets of Finnish forests. The forests and timber have always been of vital importance for Finns. The forests have provided food and the timber has been used for construction. Timber has always been the most important raw material for Finnish industry. Finnish pulp and paper is exported to every continent worldwide. The forest is also a source of wellbeing for Finns; a place for pastimes, exercise and relaxation. The forest is an integral part of Finnish lives right from childhood and every Finn has some sort of relationship with the forest. The interactive exhibition of Science Centre Pilke is an animated and intriguing way of exploring what trees grow in Finland and how they are harvested and transported. Visitors can also experience what it is like to lose your way in the forest, sing forest karaoke, go hunting, and learn about thousands of products that can be made from wood. Best of all: you can touch everything in the exhibition! A massive forest harvester vehicle takes pride of place in the open plan exhibition space and each visitor can step into the cab and try what it feels like to harvest timber in a Finnish forest. At the Pilke information desk close to the main entrance, visitors can obtain information about trekking, fishing and hunting in Finland. Right next to the information desk is Pilke Shop that sells forest-related products. There are Finnish and Lappish design items, chaga mushrooms, sap lotions and a number of other great products from Finnish forests, and all made to be easy to take home with you. The Pilke building is also a fine attraction in itself, as it is one of Finland s largest woodenbuilt buldings. The name of the science centre, Pilke, means firewood, but it also means a twinkle in your eye. 18 Open you eyes to the Arctic Arktikum is a superb place to start a trip to Lapland. With its grand glass roof, Arktikum houses the Regional Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The exhibitions extensively showcase the nature, cultures and history of the northern regions. Arktikum also allows you to experience the Northern Lights throughout the year, not even cloudy skies will stop you from having this experience of a lifetime. The large auditorium shows a video that tells about the changing seasons and the Northern Lights in their most astonishing forms. Arktikum also thoroughly tells what the Northern Lights are and how they are generated. Of the temporary exhibitions in Arktikum, perhaps one of the most interesting is the exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of Finland s independence 100 Objects, 100 Pictures. As the name suggests, a hundred objects and a hundred pictures are used to depict the history of Rovaniemi and its inhabitants during the past hundred years ( ). The majority of the pictures, archive material and objects exhibited have never been on show publically before. Another fascinating exhibition is the jovial NAM NAM Arctic Food, Snacks and Grub, running through to 23rd April. In the exhibition you can see, smell and maybe even taste a bite of northern nature. Traditionally food has been hunted, fished and gathered in the Arctic region. People have eaten mostly meat and fish, but also delicacies such as Lappish squeaky cheese, cloudberries and ice cream made from animal fat. 19 Feel inspired by art, music and architecture This spring, Korundi House of Culture is hosting a unique exhibition about stories of Finnish art. One of the few buildings to survive the destruction of Rovaniemi during the Second World War is the postal bus depot that was built in In 2011, the building was revamped into the Korundi House of Culture that today houses Rovaniemi Art Museum and Lapland Chamber Orchestra. Korundi is the pearl of Rovaniemi, a delightful blend of historical architecture, art and music. A big attraction for this spring is the Stories of Finnish Art exhibition that exhibits Finnish art from the time preceding independence right up to the 1960s. Behind the exhibition is Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki that holds Finland s oldest and largest art collection. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Finland s independence, a touring version of the Ateneum classics exhibition will be on display in Korundi House of Culture through to 23rd April. Stories of Finnish Art takes visitors on a journey through the changes in Finnish art. The exhibition displays new works and draws new parallels, while creating a connection with Finnish and global history. Finland s greatest artists featured in this exhibition include Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Eero Järnefelt, Ellen Thesleff, and a whole host of other top names in Finnish art. The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation collection is a permanent feature of Korundi comprising one of the finest collections of contemporary Finnish art. 21 10 x Snow Snow covers and beautifies. In northern Finland, we have snow for almost half of the year. Various methods have evolved to get around on the snow. 1 Skis are devices to aid getting about; they have been around since the times of our forefathers. Skiing is faster than walking and nowadays, it is a popular way of getting exercise. There are as many skiing styles as there are skiers. Skiing comes into its own on 20 the frozen Ounasjoki river on a gloriously sunny spring day, the going is smooth and level with no hills in your way. Downhill skiing in its various forms is the choice for people in search of thrills; you can work up some good speeds on the slopes on Ounasvaara hill. travel Rovaniemi travel Lapland 2 Sledging is the way to stay young! The sledge was developed especially for sledging downhill but you can also use it to transport goods, such as in a traditional boat sledge on which the modern version is based. 3 People have been using kicksleds for a hundred years to get to school, the shop or visit each other. The kicksled has remained much the same for decades: runners, a seat and handles. In recent years, a sportier model has been developed for competitions for the Finnish title and the world championships. 4 Snowshoes are like tennis rackets fastened to your feet, and they make walking on the snow a whole lot easier. Snowshoes distribute your weight more evenly so you do not sink into the snow. At first, walking on snowshoes feels very cumbersome but once you have mastered the technique, you can even try to run in them. 5 From time immemorial, huskies have pulled sleds in the Arctic regions. They are reliable companions that reach their destination in even the harshest conditions. The husky was born to pull sleds and it is only really happy when it is working; days off aren t much fun for these dogs. You can get to experience the thrill of speed with a dog team at husky farms in Rovaniemi. Choose from a short spin of a few hundred metres to an overnight safari. 6 The reindeer is an integral part of Lapland. For centuries, reindeer were used as draught animals because their hooves enable them to traverse the snow. At first glance, the reindeer seems very slow and even lazy, but your illusions are soon dispelled at the reindeer races. Race times match any harness race times. You can have a go at driving reindeer on reindeer farms. A short circuit gives you an idea of the reindeer s speed while a longer safari offers you the chance to admire nature on a quiet ride. 1/2017

22 7 Along with advances in technology, motorised vehicles came into their own for getting around on the snow. Reindeer herders use snowmobiles but they are also a great vehicle for tourist. Safari companies offer a range of programmes. First timers get to have a go safely with a guide while the more daring head off all the way to the Arctic Ocean. 8 Many ways have been developed to get around on ice. Figure skates are for whirling across the ice, hockey skates are for playing the Finnish national team sport and Nordic skates are for long journeys. Rovaniemi has several skating rinks where you can have a go. You can hire skates and get instruction, and first timers have lots of fun just trying to stay on their feet. 9 Summer in Lapland is short but luckily, the golf season on the Arctic Circle has been extended with the advent of ice golf. The frozen river makes an even course; just remember to use coloured balls! 10 This winter pastime calls for a cool head and a touch of bravery. A hole is sawn into the ice on Kemijoki river; all you need is a swimming costume, a woollen hat and a pair of slippers. Rovaniemellä on kolmesataa aktiivista avantouinnin harrastajaa, ja nyt myös matkailijoille on tarjolla mahdollisuus tutustua Kemijokeen keskellä talvea. Rovaniemellä on kaikille avoin uintiavanto Koskipuistossa Kemijoen rannalla kaupungin uimarannalla. Avanto on auki keskiviikkoisin klo Telttasauna on lämpimänä puoli tuntia pidempään. Uinti ja sauna maksavat yhteensä kuusi euroa. Kausi kestää huhtikuun loppuun. Jäiseen veteen pulahtaminen parantaa verenkiertoa ja aineenvaihduntaa, hidastaa solujen vanhenemista ja suojelee ihon kimmoisuutta. Säännöllisesti avantoon pulahtavien verenpaine tutkitusti laskee merkittävästi. Aloittelijan kannattaa viipyä avannossa vain muutamia sekunteja. Hengityksen salpautumisen tunne on monelle avantouimarille tuttu, mutta se ei ole vaarallista. Sydän- ja verisuonivaivoista kärsivien kuitenkin kannattaa välttää kylmää kylpyä. Ennen avantoon menoa lämmitellään saunassa, mutta lauteilta ei laskeuduta suoraan veteen, vaan ensin kehon annetaa hieman viilentyä. Avannosta juostaan sitten takaisin saunan suloiseen lämpöön. Avannossa ollaan niin lyhyen aikaa, ettei siellä ehdi vilustua, mutta jälkeenpäin kannattaa pukeutua lämpimästi. Chilly water refreshes and toughens Ice swimming is a wild, yet healthy Finnish pastime. Rovaniemi has three hundred active ice swimmers and nowadays Rovaniemi offers tourists the possibility to swim in the frozen River Kemijoki in the middle of winter. There is an ice swimming spot in Rovaniemi located on the River Kemijoki town shore. The ice swimming pool is open on Wednesdays 5:30 6:30 p.m. The sauna tent is heated for half an hour longer. Swimming and sauna costs EUR 6. The skiing season lasts through to May Day. Taking a dip in chilly water improves blood circulation and metabolism, slows down cell ageing and cares for the skin. Ice swimmers who go ice swimming on a regular basis will see their blood pressure drop significantly. Beginners should only stay a few seconds in the ice pool. People suffering from heart and artery problems should avoid ice swimming. Swimmers warm themselves up in the sauna before taking a dip and run quickly back into the sauna after the swim. 29 Seppo Konttaniemi Konttaniemi is an authentic Lappish reindeer farm Set in an old spruce grove, the Konttaniemi Reindeer Farm introduces you to these antler-bearing animals close up. Konttaniemi Reindeer Farm is located only a few minutes drive from the Rovaniemi town centre, but the farm is surrounded by the tranquillity of the snow-laden forest and the pure air of the wilderness. Konttaniemi is an authentic and working reindeer farm. It was thirty years ago when Matti and Terttu Konttaniemi opened up their reindeer farm to welcome tourists, but traditional reindeer husbandry remains a part of everyday life on the farm. Their sons Seppo and Jarno, and daughter-in-law Mari continue to operate the farm. The reindeer farm welcomes visitors throughout the year. During the summer months, the farm introduces you to reindeer and nature with summertime aromas and sounds, but in the winter months, you will get to ride a reindeer sleigh through the snowy forests. The threekilometre reindeer sleigh ride route winds its way through the depths of the snow-laden forest. The sleigh rides are organised by a professional guide who also tells visitors about the life of a reindeer. In the winter you can also take the test to receive a Reindeer Driver s Licence, tells Seppo. Visitors attend the driving school where they familiarise themselves with reindeer and controlling a reindeer sleigh. Following the reindeer driving school, the learner will drive a reindeer-drawn sleigh on a safe trail made in the adjacent forest. 30 Konttaniemi on aito lappilainen porotila Vanhan kuusikon keskellä sijaitsevalla Konttaniemen porotilalla tutustutaan lähietäisyydeltä pohjoisen sarvipäihin. Konttaniemen porotila sijaitsee vain muutaman minuutin ajomatkan päässä Rovaniemen keskustasta, mutta tilaa ympäröi lumisen metsän hiljaisuus ja erämaan puhdas ilma. Konttaniemi on aito, toimiva porotila. Poroseikkailun ja ulkoilun jälkeen syödään tilan päärakennuksen tunnelmallisessa tilausravintolassa aitoja Lapin luonnon antimia. 37 RANUA ZOO has a new and rare resident Fans of Ranua Zoo have cause for celebration this spring. Five years ago, polar bear mother Venus gave birth to Ranzo, now she is the proud mother of another cub. When it was born, the new cub weighed in at only half a kilogram, but when it leaves the den for the first time in February March, the cub will already weigh ten kilograms, tells Zoo Manager Tommi Hinno. People working at the zoo are very proud of this newcomer, and for good reason, as it is extremely rare for a polar bear to reproduce in captivity. Special focus has been put on monitoring the wellbeing of mother bear Venus. Venus s den was isolated in good time prior to the birth. After delivering the cub, the mother bear was given perfect peace and quiet to care for her new-born cub, and the goings on in the den have been monitored using cameras that record all the action. This happy event also had some sorrow. Venus actually gave birth to two cubs, but one cub died when it was at the age of only ten days. Even after the cub had died, Venus took loving care of the dead cub for another two days before giving up hope. Nevertheless, the surviving cub is energetic and in good health, and this spring it will step out of the den for the first time with its mother. This year a competition will be arranged with the intention of coming up with a name for the polar bear cub. You can participate in this competition with your suggestion at the zoo or on their website. The competition for giving a name to the former polar bear cub received altogether 33,000 suggestions. The name chosen was Ranzo as it depicts the birthplace of the cub. With the birth of the new polar bear cub, the zoo is expecting to welcome a huge number of new visitors, especially since the popularity of the zoo was experiencing growth even before the birth of the cub. In addition to the polar bear cub, this year at the zoo there are plenty of other animal young that are experiencing their very first winter. For instance, the muskox had its first calf. This spring could see the birth of another calf. The muskox is a longhaired and massive animal, even though it is actually related to the sheep. It is a true animal of the Arctic, and its wool is said to be the warmest in the world. The striped and amusing wild boar is also expecting piglets. The wildlife park is also home to five elk calves. Three of the calves were animals rescued from the wild, and as the winter approaches the calves are still being fed with a bottle. If the temperatures are well below freezing for the park visit, snow overalls, winter shoes and other warm winter wear for the whole family can be hired from the wildlife park. Kolme vasoista on luonnosta pelastettuja orpoja, jotka olivat talven alkaessa vielä tuttipulloruokinnassa. Eläinpuisto on keväällä kauneimmillaan. Puiston puupolku on tunnelmallisesti lumen alla, ja eläimet pörhistelevät paksussa talvikarvassa. Jos puistopäivänä paukkuu pakkanen, voi perheelle vuokrata kierrosta varten haalareita, talvikenkiä ja muita lämpimiä talvivarusteita. Lapsia voi vetää ilmaisessa pulkassa. 43 LAPLAND has something for everyone A holiday spent at a Lappish ski resort is one that is unforgettable. There's always plenty going on in Levi Levi, Finland's busiest ski resort, not only offers snow fun, but also a superb nightlife. The restaurants, clubs and the giant arena provide music, good company and excellent food. This pleasant alpine village is full of boutiques selling branded products intended for the whole family. Levi also boasts one of the nation's largest spas. Accommodation alternatives available in Levi range from cabin villages to luxury hotels. The distance from Levi to Kittilä Airport is only 17 kilometres. Pallas and its enchanting tranquillity For tourists, Pallas offers an excellent contrast to the busy fell resorts. 44 Pyhä-Luosto assures enjoyment for the whole family This fell resort duo located in East Lapland has expanded over the past few years, yet both resorts have managed to retain their renowned peacefulness among snow adventures organised for families. The activities and programmes available are on par with the largest resorts, but nightlife is intentionally concentrated around high seasons only. Great events offer a splash of colour for the winter months, and it's worth remembering that Pyhä has one of Finland's finest competition ski slopes, Piste Palander. Rovaniemi Airport is 128 kilometres from Pyhä and 114 kilometres from Luosto. Ylläs is still number one For active holidaymakers Ylläs has the most to offer visitors: the most ski slopes, ski lifts and the largest cross-country skiing trail network. Split into two resort villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, the resort provides plenty of activity, great accommodation and outstanding cuisine in both villages. The legendary Jounin Kauppa shop can be found in the Äkäslompolo side of the resort. The distance from Ylläs to Kittilä Airport is 36 kilometres. Salla holidaymakers have a twinkle in their eyes Lying close to the Russian border, Salla can be regarded as being Finland's most fun fell resort - at least on the basis of its annually organised events - as there is a running competition to the off-licence, folk that stay up all night and sleep through the day, or gatherings arranged during the reindeer mating season. In addition to these peculiar and happy events there is downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, reindeer races and excellent food. The distance from Salla to Kuusamo Airport is 108 kilometres. Cross-country skiing trails open early in the Olos resort Located in western Lapland, Olos is one of Lapland's oldest ski resorts, yet it is still smaller than Levi, Ylläs or Saariselkä. The cross-country skiing trails are traditionally opened early in the autumn and the resort attracts cross-country skiing professionals from all round the globe. High standard accommodation is offered for visitors to Olos. The fell resort has also been profiled as a destination for vehicle testing, and indeed it's a place where you are likely to spot future car models cleverly camouflaged. 45 ARKTIKUM teki viime vuonna yleisöennätyksen Vuonna 2017 Ounasjoen rannalla lasikaton alla vietetään 25-vuotisjuhlaa näyttelyiden ja tapahtumien merkeissä. Lapin matkailun suosio on näkynyt myös Arktikumin kävijämäärässä, joka on noussut tasaisesti viime vuosina. Viime vuonna talon näyttelyissä ja tapahtumissa vieraili ihmistä, joista kuusikymmentä prosenttia tuli ulkomailta. Arktikumin vetonauloja ovat arkkitehtuurin lisäksi Lapin historiaa ja kulttuuria sekä arktista aluetta esittelevät näyttelyt. Tiedekeskuksessa ja maakuntamuseossa avattiin vuonna 2016 kiinnostavia vaihtonäyttelyitä muun muassa arktisten alueiden ruokakulttuureista, ilmastonmuutoksesta, matkailumainonnasta ja sodan vaikutuksista lappilaisiin siviileihin sekä jälkipolviin. Vuosi 2017 on Arktikumille juhlavuosi, sillä rakennus avattiin yleisölle 25 vuotta sitten osana Suomen 75-vuotisjuhlallisuuksia. 46 EU:n pohjoisin kamariorkesteri esiintyy kevään aikana Rovaniemellä kuusi kertaa Lapin musiikillinen johtotähti on vuonna 1972 perustettu Lapin kamariorkesteri, EU-alueen pohjoisin ammattikamariorkesteri. Kamariorkesteri vierailee kevään mittaan eri puolilla Lappia ja tekee konserttimatkan myös Budapestiin. Rovaniemellä orkesteri tarjoaa kuusi korkealaatuista konserttia klo 20 Yöllisin rukouksin - konsertissa kamariorkesteri esittää Rovaniemen kirkossa Mozartin, Panufnikin ja Brucknerin musiikkia. Exciting and mysterious ROYAL REINDEER A new restaurant opens this winter at the Santa Claus Village. Earlier known as Santamus, this restaurant and magical world of Lapland aimed at groups is now open to the public and is called Royal Reindeer. The interior decoration of the restaurant is rich in fairytale ambiance and its meals boast the flavours of wild Lapland. Royal Reindeer serves buffet lunches every day 11:30 a.m. 2 p.m. The restaurant is also open on public holidays. In the evening, Royal Reindeer serves a four-course meal boasting a combination of local and international flavours. Some of the meals on the menu can be shared, a common practice with many foreign restaurants, but the ingredients for the meal are all sourced from Lapland s nature: fish and reindeer take pride of place on the menu. 47 IGLOOS cool as ice Every year two igloos rise up in Pöykkölä. They prosper for the winter season, and upon the arrival of spring they melt and join the waters of the Kemi River - to rise up again the following year. When the first frosts embrace Rovaniemi, hectic building starts in Pöykkölä. The tools and materials do not consist of hammers, nails and planks, but of snow and ice. The igloos in Snowland are shaped by a supporting framework, and about kilograms of ice, the main building material, go into their impressive structure. Snowland has been erected on the same spot for no less than nineteen years. The host of the site, Ilkka Bergman, tells us that the construction work takes about six weeks. The finished result is a pair of igloos with spherical roofs and ceilings, and a seating capacity of up to 270 diners. Nature shrouded in white During the early spring, the trees on the fells of eastern and northern Finland are shrouded under a thick covering of snow. The term used to describe this accumulation of snow and hoarfrost is called crown snow-load. It is nature s own display of art; when the wet snow sticks to the trees in increasing masses, it creates a beautiful crown that can weigh up to four tons on a single tree. This incredible weight makes the trees bend over and you can see bent trees in the summer as a reminder of nature s amazing force. The trees in Lapland have naturally evolved to cope with this phenomenon by growing shorter branches. These trees are especially beautiful as they stand out against the clear blue sky on a frosty day. Crown snow also gathers on power lines, which in turn may cause power shortages and other disruptions. The forests on the Arctic Circle are at their most beautiful during late winter and early spring when they resemble a fairytale forest wrapped a snowy white veil.
