5 Arctic Circle News Santa Claus Holiday Village, owned and run by Inga Pokka-Jääskö and Marko Jääskö expands this summer Santa s own holiday village is world renowned Located in the Santa Claus Village, Santa s own Santa Claus Holiday Village expands in July. The new addition to the village is a hotel with 24 suites. At the same time, we will open a new restaurant, because the former capacity is insufficient due to the increase in the number of guests, tells entrepreneur Inga Pokka-Jääskö. 9 Arktikum ARKTIKUM IS A GREAT PLACE TO START YOUR TRIP TO LAPLAND Situated on the banks of the great Ounasjoki River in the town centre of Rovaniemi is a Science Centre and Museum where you can experience the Arctic nature, explore Arctic cultures and the history of Lapland. 11 Science Centre Pilke tells you everything about Finnish forests Located in the centre of Rovaniemi, Science Centre Pilke reveals to visitors the secrets of Finnish forests. The interactive exhibition of Science Centre Pilke is an animated and intriguing way of exploring what trees grow in Finland and how they are harvested and transported. Visitors can also experience what it is like to lose your way in the forest, sing forest karaoke, go hunting, and learn about thousands of products that can be made from wood. Best of all: you can touch everything in the exhibition! At the Pilke information desk, visitors can obtain information about trekking, fishing and hunting in Finland. Right next to the information desk is Pilke Shop that sells forest-related products. The name of the science centre, Pilke, means firewood, but it also means a twinkle in your eye. How has man influenced the being of winter? How do tourists experience the wintry nature and has the exoticism of the Finnish winter retained its attraction? Ever since the early history, the Finnish winter has defined the Finnish nature and the Finnish way of living. In those days winter was often seen frightening. Also our national epic Kalevala transmitted an image of a cold and dreary Pohjola. As late as in the end of 19th century, people began to see symbolism referring to survival and toughness in winter. The Finnish artists who had studied in Paris utilized what they had learned there. They were not afraid of the cold but wanted to paint the Finnish winter outdoors; sometimes the gleaming snowy landscape in crispy clear sunshine, sometimes trees covered with snow in the remotest corner of an untouched wood. The spectacular exhibition of the Rovaniemi Art Museum, Land of Snow, will answer any questions you may have about Finland s winter. The exhibition is curated by Hilkka Liikkanen from the Rovaniemi Art Museum and there will be over 70 artworks of 40 artists from 19th century up to 2000s. The exhibition is composed of the collections of the Association of the Finnish Fine Art Foundations (STSY). Korundi House of Culture houses Rovaniemi Art museum One of the few buildings to survive the destruction of Rovaniemi during the Second World War is the postal bus depot that was built in In 2011, the building was revamped into the Korundi House of Culture that today houses Rovaniemi Art Museum and Lapland Chamber Orchestra. Korundi is the pearl of Rovaniemi, a delightful blend of historical architecture, art and music. The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation collection is a permanent feature of Korundi comprising one of the finest collections of contemporary Finnish art. The theatrical performance of the musical Carola, performed by professional actors and musicians, is a tribute to one of Finland s most famous female solo artists, the dark and mystifying Carola. Carole made quite a selection of golden oldies that have become part of Finland s soul landscape. If you want to learn about the Finns, it is well worth watching the Carola performance that is performed altogether 28 times in July and August. On 4 August Valdemari sees a gathering of spectacular American cars at the Midnight Rock n Roll Party. You will be sure to hear some great music and see plenty of shiny chrome! Valdemari s third large summertime event is held on 17 August, Venetian Festival. The evenings of late summer are savoured with the gentle sunshine of the Midnight Sun, with added ambiance from the Lumberjack Candle Bridge and restaurant lighting. The performing artists include the forever-loved Olavi Uusivirta and Lappish rock band Putkiradio. Valdemari s summertime programmes are organised outdoors and the sheltered dance floor shelters you from any surprises thrown at you by Lapland s summer! 15 Ounasvaara Ounasvaaran hiihtokeskuksen kesätarjonta kasvaa Täällä käymme joka kesä on monen tyytyväisen lomalaisen kommentti Oukun kesäkelkkaradasta. Ounasvaaran kesäkelkkarata on koko perheelle sopiva aktiviteetti, sillä rata on turvallinen ja vauhti on itse säädeltävissä. Supersuosittu rata alkaa vaaran huipulta, josta aukeaa laskijalle huikea näkymä Rovaniemen upeaan jokimaisemaan: Kemijoelle, Ounasjoelle ja tietenkin itse kaupunkiin. Perinteikäs tuolihissi vie kelkkailijan hiihtokeskuksen ala-asemalta kesäkelkan lähtöpaikalle. Yläasemalla henkilökunta opastaa kelkan käytössä, mikä tekee kelkkailusta helppoa ja turvallista. Rata kulkee mutkitellen mäntymetsän keskellä. Rata on teräksinen kouru, jonka pituus on 750 metriä ja korkeusero 110 metriä. Jokaisessa 1-2 hengen kelkassa on jarru, jolla vauhtia voi säädellä oman makunsa mukaan. Jos kelkkakyyti tuntuu liian vauhdikkaalta, tarjolla on näköalahissikyyti joko yhteen suuntaan tai meno-paluulipulla. 17 Arctic Circle SANTA CLAUS TELLS LITTLE ABOUT HIS LIFE VISIT ROVANIEMI How does Santa Claus prepare for Christmas? At Ear Mountain we spend the whole year preparing for Christmas. Of course, gifts are most important, so we have to make sure they are all ready in good time. We take care of our reindeer, check the sleigh is in good condition, and the skis are okay. Santa s route varies every year and is meticulously planned with the help of the Weather Elves. In preparation for the long journey, we have to take into consideration the Northern Lights, north winds, snowstorms and time differences. There is plenty to do, but luckily Santa Claus has plenty of experience at preparing for Christmas. How does Santa Claus relax after Christmas? In the same way as other times of the year, by taking a nap in the evening. Scientists have found that a nap of minutes in the afternoon really does refresh you and evens out the day s rhythm, but Santa Claus already discovered this 150 years ago. I also like to spend time relaxing while I read children s letters and books. I always read a number of books at the same time, like travel books and autobiographies, and plenty of children s books. In-between books, I like to take occasional strolls outdoors. In the winter-time, I love walking in the freezing conditions, enjoying nature and the extremely fresh outdoor air. What is Santa s favourite food? Traditional rice pudding, of course! But, this is probably the favourite food of every Finn. I also love all sorts of porridge. I get barley from a farmer friend of mine, and Mrs Claus makes some amazing porridge with barley. Summertime is also the time we make fresh sauna whisks using the fresh leafy twigs of birch trees. Where does Santa spend the summer months? Summer is a busy time for Santa, so it s great that there is the Midnight Sun and so much daylight in the summer months. I walk outdoors a lot and chat with nature. The forest wildlife, like squirrels, hares, foxes, bears and wolves, all have their own tales to tell. Summertime is also the time we make fresh sauna whisks using the fresh leafy twigs of birch trees. How many homes does Santa Claus have? My real home is Ear Mountain, called Korvatunturi in Finnish. In the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, I have a big house where I greet travellers. Over the centuries I have also acquired some quaint hideaway cabins that I visit occasionally, but as these are hideaways, the locations have to be kept a secret. What do you love most about Rovaniemi and Lapland? Nature and people. Two huge rivers flow through the town with the wonderful backdrop of the hilly landscapes. Just a few steps from the town centre and you can find yourself in the wilderness, a place where you can hike and pick wild berries and mushrooms. All of Lapland s seasons are beautiful; the brightness of summer, vibrant colours of autumn, crown snow-clad trees of winter and the brilliance of the springtime sunshine. Mother Nature is an artist beyond compare! 16 16

Christmas lights decorating Santa Claus Gift House shine 365 days a year. Located by on the E4 highway side of the Santa Claus Village, the large reception area of the building takes you to the colourful Xmas Boulevard, the start of which begins with you crossing over the magical line of the Arctic Circle. After the Roosevelt Cabin, Santa Claus Gift House is the oldest building in the village. The old side of the building was built in 1964, when people from all over the world got to know that Santa Claus can be met at the Arctic Circle. The Christmassy milieu of the building is today an oasis for friends of Christmas, Santa Claus and Lapland, a place you can explore all day. In the boulevard you will find Finnish design, savour authentic local Lappish food, and even take some handicrafts back as souvenirs. The Building also has the Arctic Circle Info, there to provide assistance with anything related to the Santa Claus Village. Being a shopkeeper is not a job, it s a way of life! Every year, the Santa Claus Village welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors. Visitors are served by a busy bunch of entrepreneurs who are not afraid of work or speaking many different languages. 20 MEET SANTA S REINDEER ON THEIR SUMMERTIME PASTURE Located in the very heart of the Santa Claus Village, Santa Claus Reindeer allows you to get up close with reindeer also in the summer months. There are three fun family programmes to choose from. A working reindeer safari takes you on a ride in the wilderness. The participants can also be collected from their accommodation and taken into the forest. Special packs are carried on the reindeer s back and led by its reins through the forest to reach the river bank. Fishing then takes place on the river shore before trekking to the hilltop to light a campfire. Sausages are fried and coffee brewed on the fire and tales told. One other Santa Claus Reindeer summer programme involves meeting Santa s reindeer on their summertime pasture. This trip involves frying sausages and brewing coffee on the fire and telling of tales while the reindeer peacefully roam around. Santa Claus Reindeer s third summertime reindeer programme lets participants explore the life of a reindeer herder. First, the reindeer in the enclosure are fed, then they are led by their reins to cross the Arctic Circle, covering an approximate distance of 500 metres. The automatic camera system takes a photograph of the crossing and the participant will receive a diploma marking this achievement. The trip continues to a Lappish kota shelter to make jewellery from reindeer antler. Tasty glow-fried salmon will also be prepared. 23 Moomins are from Finland! Loved worldwide, the Moomins are fairytale characters created by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson ( ). The best-known of the Moomins is Moomintroll, who lives with his mother Moominmamma and father Moominpappa in Moomin House. Moomin House is located in the Moomin-valley, far from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. Moomins and their friends have plenty of fun and exciting adventures. They are renowned for their kindness and wisdom. Tove Jansson drew the first Moomin characters back in the 1930s, but they were named Moomins by Tove s uncle. As a young girl, Tove used to steal food from the cupboard, so her uncle warned her about the Moomintroll that lived in the cupboard. 29 Ounasvaara New this summer in Ounasvaara Outdoor Resort For many years, summer visitors have known Ounasvaara for its toboggan run. This summer, the area will offer significantly more with the scenic lift, the Bike Park mountain bike centre, the children s downhill car track, the Kesärafla BBQ kitchen and public sauna, the stand-up paddle (SUP) board and rowing boat rentals, the 18-hole frisbee golf course and the 18-hole Santa Claus Golf course. We visit every summer is how many happy holidaymakers describe the Ounasvaara toboggan run The summer toboggan run in Ounasvaara is a safe activity for the whole family, where each user can regulate the pace of their toboggan independently. The super-popular track starts at the top of the mountain, from where there is a spectacular view of the stunning landscape of river Kemijoki at Ounasjoki, and of course the city of Rovaniemi. A traditional chair lift will take you from the ski resort s base station to the starting point of the toboggan run, where the staff will instruct you on the use of the toboggan. A scenic lift to hiking tracks and sightseeing spots If the speed to the toboggan ride worries you, we also offer a scenic lift as a single ride or a return passage. On top of Ounasvaara hill, there is a sightseeing tower, a nature trail and countless hiking trails for joggers, cyclists and hikers. In the shop at Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara, the hikers can buy picnic lunches and drinks made from locally sourced ingredients. Bike Park for both kids and adults Mountain bikers can ride down marked mountain trails at Bike Park, which is set to open in the foot of Ounasvaara mountain at the start of the 2018 summer season. The top of the mountain can be accessed easily with a bike using the chair lift. From the peak, you can either descend on the downhill tracks or enjoy Ounasvaara s mountain bike trails. If you didn t bring your own cyclocross, mountain or downhill bike, you can hire a bike at the equipment rental centre. There are also popular fat bikes available, both in children s sizes and as electric bikes for adults. An optional route app can be hired at the equipment rental centre to help navigate both marked and unmarked hiking and cycling routes. New this summer are the downhill car track for children and the dirt bike track, which is one of the best ways for young riders to learn bike control. The resort s summer season starts after Midsummer on 26 June The centre is open on Mon-Sat from until 4 August. On Sundays and during heavy rain the centre is closed. The new low summer season is 9 August-1 September when the summer services will be run with slightly shorter opening hours on Thu-Sat from Water activities and a burger at Kesärafla Sauna Ounasvaara Outdoor Resort extends to the shores of river Kemijoki, where you can find the city s most famous charcoal BBQ and a public sauna. You can rent SUP boards or rowing boats and go paddling along the longest river in Finland. 33 Design Wooden dildos made by a Finnish designer from Rovaniemi Ever since the early 1900s, Finland has been a design superpower. Finnish furniture and crockery have now been joined by a revolutionary new product make from warm and natural wood. We are talking about the dildos made by Tea Latvala who lives in Rovaniemi. Customers throughout the globe have discovered our Finnish wooden dildos from our website, Tea tells. What inspired Tea to design wooden dildos was the sum of a number of occurrences. I come from the Kurikka, a city in Finland that is renowned for wood production. My father worked at a wood refinement plant. We always had plenty of timber at home and I learned to love wood being a natural material. Tea graduated as a designer in 2002 and a master of arts for fashion design in She worked as an art director in the fashion industry. Tea has also done visual and graphic design, and even designed the new packaging for Premium Koskenkorva, i.e. Finland s most renowned spirit. teatimo.com The first contact Tea had with dildos was actually on television. I once co-presented a television show with Anna Perho called G-Spot that focused on sexuality. During the show, we also examined sex toys. It was then that I noticed just how huge the dildo market was, but the products were often of inferior quality. I came up with the idea of making change towards a more natural direction. If an elk is not seen, something that is very rare, we will refund half of the price of the program. We usually see elks on every safari. Our record is 28 elks on a single safari! Elk safaris are arranged from mid-may through to the end of September. Customers are collected from their hotel or other accommodation and taken to the Lapland Welcome Safari House, from which the safari commences. Following the 4 5-hour safari, the participants will be taken back to the hotel. Departure times vary in the summer, tells Veli. The elk is most active in the evenings. In June we start at around 9 o clock in the evening, but in September we may leave as early as 4 p.m. The departure time will be confirmed when making the safari booking. The duration of the safari also varies according to the date of departure. During the summertime Midnight Sun, the safaris are longer than in the autumn when the evenings start to get dark. This safari is organised daily and individual customers are also welcome to participate. On the safari, guidance will be given on how to photograph and film elks. Private safaris are also available. Lapland Welcome safaris do not search for elk from any certain spot, as finding the elk is based on the fact that the company s guides know the surrounding nature and region. The places where elk are spotted vary throughout the summer, as their way of life changes, tells Veli. Female elk give birth to calves in early summer, but the mating season is in September. Elk have different behaviour at different times of the year. Differing from the reindeer, the elk travels alone. The only exception is the nursing cows that travel with their calf for a year. In the early summer, it is often possible to see young elk chased away by its mother. Half of elk families give birth to twin calves and these twins spend their first summer together following separation from their mother. Our elk safaris have been our best-selling summer programme in Rovaniemi for a number of years. Watching wild animals is a fascinating and exciting pastime. 36 Fishing Pello is the Fishing Capital of Finland Pello, located on Lapland s western border, is a fisherman s paradise. The Tornionjoki River that flows through Pello is Europe s largest free-flowing salmon river. For those fond of lake fishing, Pello also has the huge Lake Miekojärvi, affectionately known as the Pearl of the Arctic Circle. In addition to its larger waterways, Pello also has a number of lakes and streams offering anglers fine catches. Pello on kalastuksen pääkaupunki Suomessa Lapin länsirajalla sijaitsevan Pellon läpi virtaava Tornionjoki on Euroopan suurin vapaana virtaava lohijoki. 37 The Royal Races Rovaniemi hosts Finland s biggest horse race in July The Royal Races Harness racing has a unique atmosphere. The race is packed with spectators. Families picnic on the lawns. Happiness with crowds at the market. Sounds of fun and joy can be heard from the children s areas. The sweet aromas of delicious food entice you to savour the flavours. The noise from the spectator areas rises as the horses are led onto the track. You can sense the tension on the expressions of the riders and their horses. Every horse wants to win! On July, Rovaniemi is hosting Finland s biggest harness racing event, the Royal Races the Kuninkuusravit in Finnish. The Royal Races is the biggest event ever held in Rovaniemi. Both days expect to see 30,000 spectators. Marketing team leader of Rovaniemi s Royal Races, Tommi Hinno, has attended hundreds of harness races all over Finland. He believes that the Mäntyvaara harness racing track in Rovaniemi is one of the finest in the nation. Maybe even the finest. Mäntyvaara is an outstanding venue for large harness race events. We have an enormous amount of space here. The amphitheatre-shaped spectator area was made from former log driving chutes making seating rows covering kilometres in length, which means every spectator gets an excellent view of the race Many years of work has been put into preparing the Mäntyvaara track for the race. The racecourse surface has been entirely renewed and its cambers improved. A new 40-place shelter has been constructed as an extension to the existing shelter. There are now so many sheltered harnessing places that the horses participating in the Royal Races The Royal Races is the biggest event ever held in Rovaniemi will each have their own pen to use to prepare for the race. An overnight spot close to the track has also been arranged for every horse participating in the Royal Races. A new camping ground for people has also been built in Mäntyvaara and each of its 200 spots were already sold out in the winter. Fortunately, Rovaniemi also has a number of other high standard camping areas. The Royal Races comprises three separate starts. The combined time for these stages and placings will be set by the best stallion and best mare, i.e. the Racing King and the Racing Queen. The finest moment of the horse race is the Royal Races prize-giving ceremony, tells Tommi Hinno. A wreath is placed around the necks of the Racing King and Racing Queen. The riders are lifted into the air on their carts. Winning the Royal Races is by far the best achievement a horse and its supporting team can attain in Finland! A group of four Lappish enterprises are responsible for catering the event, all having experience of large trade fairs throughout Finland. The best of Lapland s food is available. Spectators in the harness race VIP area receive exclusive services catered by Lapland Chefs Association. Children have their very own area with Elf School, Amethyst Treasure Hunt and Royal Hobbyhorse Race. Mäntyvaara cannot be accessed by car. You can only access the area by taxi, horse transport or bus. A non-stop bus service runs between the town centre accommodation and the racecourse on both race days. One of the wildlife park s most loved residents is the polar bear. Over the years, Ranua s polar bear sow Venus has given birth to two cubs, one of which is already a juvenile polar bear. The male polar bear cub Sisu almost weighs as much as his mother, but still retains his playful nature. It is fun to watch what he gets up to. This summer, Sisu, as a teenager, really gets to enjoy water for the first time and challenging his mother with real play, tells CEO of the wildlife park Tommi Hinno. May saw a new species introduced to the wildlife park, the manul, or Pallas s cat. The Pallas s cat is native to the steppe regions of Central Asia, tells Tommi. It is about the same size as a regular domestic cat, but wild. Its thick fur protects it from the cold. The cat s appearance somewhat resembles a Persian cat, but they are not related. The extremely popular feeding demonstrations at the wildlife park continue this summer. During the feeding, the animals are seen with the keeper who also tells about the animals and their habits. New animal young are once again being born in Ranua Wildlife Park this summer. This year, we are expecting to see the wild boar give birth to stripy piglets that are full of fun. Even-toed ungulates and birds are also expecting. The wildlife park s own exclusive resort Gulo Gulo was expanded last winter. The resort now has 30 apartments providing accommodation for 180 visitors. The Gulo Gulo apartments are named according to different Arctic species, so accommodation can be booked according to your own favourite species. Otter fans can also hire a hot tub and splash around in the water like otters do. The restaurant serves resort guests and other wildlife park visitors and is open through to the evening. The work was created by a Finnish architect and visual artist from Tampere Maija Kovari. The piece depicts Arctic nature conservation as part of everyday life. It consists of statements written in seven different languages built within a craggy outcrop within the wildlife park that visitors were previously not able to access. The site is very impressive. The idea behind Maija Kovari s piece of art is to inspire people to consider everyday choices. The Ranua Wildlife Park is a good place to inspire ideas: When we go shopping and make other everyday choices, we always impact nature and the climate. As is well-known, climate change particularly poses challenges for the Arctic regions. Maija emphasises that the statements of the art piece are not commands, but a call for the viewer to consider their own relationship with nature and how each and every one of us can affected the wellbeing of nature. The piece is nevertheless subtle and allows the craggy outcrop to be displayed in its full glory. Before engaging in the design process, I visited the location in both summer and winter. The environmental art piece works all year round and will be a permanent fixture at the wildlife park. Yksi eläinpuiston rakastetuimmista eläimistä on jääkarhu. Ranuan jääkarhurouva Venus on kasvattanut vuosien varrella kaksi poikasta, joista toinenkin on jo kasvanut isoksi pojaksi. Sisu-pojan paino lähestyy jo äidin painoa, mutta luonteeltaan nuori mies on vielä lapsenmielinen. Sen touhuja on hauska seurata. Tänä kesänä Sisu pääsee ensimmäistä kertaa teini-ikäisenä nauttimaan vedestä ja haastamaan äitiään leikkimään oikein toden teolla. Toukokuussa Ranuan eläinpuistoon muutti uusi eläinlaji eli manuli, arokissa. Manuli on kotoisin Keski-Aasian karuilta aroilta. Se on suurinpiirtein tavallisen kotikissan kokoinen, mutta villi. Paksu turkki suojaa sitä kylmyydeltä. Ulkonäöltään manuli muistuttaa eniten persialaiskissaa, mutta se ei kuitenkaan ole sille sukua. Kesällä eläinpuistossa jatkuvat huippusuositut ruokintanäytökset. Ruokinnan aikana eläimet nähdään yhdessä eläintenhoitajan kanssa, joka myös kertoo eläimistä ja niiden tavoista. Ranuan eläinpuistoon syntyy tänä kesänä jälleen myös uusia poikasia. Tänä vuonna odotetaan villisialle syntyväksi hauskoja raitapaitoja. Myös useille sorkkaeläimille ja linnuille on tulossa poikasia. Eläinpuiston oma lomakylä Gulo Gulo laajeni viime talvena. As an enthusiastic photographer, Raimo is most often found behind the camera rather than in front of it. He particularly enjoys photographing the hectic life of Finland s capital, Helsinki. Timo Vaarala has worked in media sales for Travel Rovaniemi for five years.
