Siirtolaisuusinstituutin valtuuskunnan puheenjohlaja, t;jytti 70 vuotta Siirrotaisuusinsiituurii maalau i hanen muotokuvansa kiitokseksi siitb merkittbv6std tydsta, jota prof. Nii' temaa on iehnyt ensln instituutin aikaansaamisessa ja siiten johtavissa luottamuslehtdvlssa koko instituutin tormrnnan ajan. Einari Koivukankaan maa aama muotokuva paljastertlin Slirtolaisuusinstituutin valtuuskun' nan kevdtkokouksen jelkeen 13.3 Airueina ol val kanslistiseila Sirkie ja tutkija Matti Simpanen. Helsingissa svntynyt Vilho Niitemaa tuli yli oppilaaksi vuonna 1936, joten hdn kuuluu su kupo lveen, joka parhaassa nuoruudessaan joutui keskelle toisen maailmansodan tapah tumia. Historian opiskelija Vilho Niitemaa valmistui maisteriksi vuonna 194'1 ja hdnen Baltian keskiajan historiaa k;siftelevd vaitdskirjansa valmistui Vuonna 1955 Vilho N Litemaa nimitettiin Turun ylioplston yleisen historian professo riksi Kaarlo Jantereen seuraajana. 5 Mikko A. Salo Haalit kerddvht kansaa Connecticutissa Connecticut'n osavaltio, Yhdvsvaltojen koillisosassa, olr aikoinaan varsin tarkea suomalaisten siirtolaisten keskus. Vaikka suomalaisten rivit ovat harvenneet, kulttuuritoimintaa ja keskineista yhteydenpitoa edel' leen on. Ennen vuodenvaihdetta Samposeura, Canterburyssa, piti joulukokouksen, asevelijerjest6 Ryhti kokoontui Eero lvlartinin kotiin Westreddingiin ja Aura-seura piti perin teiset lastenjoulujuhlat Voluntownissa. Sampo-seuraa elvytetiiiin Sampo'seuran joulukokous oli monessa suhteessa tarkea. Vanha kunnianarvoisa Sampohaali on nehnyt parempia ja huonompiaikoja. Sen palkeilla ovat esiintyneet monet suomalaisen viihdemaailman tdhdet. Tummuneiden kulissien taustoihin ovat kirjoittaneet nimensa niin Tapio Rautavaara kuin Esa Pakarinen, niin Lasse Pihlajamaa kuin Veikko Ahvenainenkin. Katsot tavaksi oli saatu vanha amerikkalaisten tekemd elokuva talv;soddsta jd Aura seuran jd. senen Anja l\4iillisen kokoama leikekirja so danaikaisista uutisista sellaisina kuin ne esiin' tyivat aikansa sanomalehtien palstoilla. Luovu tustilaisuus oli osa seuran joulujuhlan ohjelmaa Joulu haalissa Aura seuran perinteisiin kuuluu lasten joulu, jrrhlan jarjestiminen vuosittain..juhliin osallistuu ensimmbisen, toisen ja kolmannen polven suomalaisia koko Connecticulin alueelta. Tdma vuonna vieraita oli noin sataklrnra. Sarr oli koristettu toulu'seks kuus,n ja kyntliloin. Kunniapaikalla olivat Suomen ja Yhdysvaltain liput sekd tasavallan presidentti IMauno Koiviston virallinen kuva. JLrh lan juontajana toimr kunniakonslrli Kalle Anderson. Ohjelmaan kuului paljon 4

7 musilkkia ja lasten esittdmea ohielmaa. Tai' teilija Hannu N4ekipuro esitti poikansa Markin ja timan ystev;n Danny l\4artineaun kanssa torvisoittoa. Mark ja Danny opiskelevat musiikkia Eastern Connecticut State Universityssa. Hannu Mdkipuro esitti myds kaksi s6veltdmednsa ja sanoittamaansa joululaulua. Griswoldin peruskoulusta oli joukko oppilaita opettajansa Shirley Shawn (o.s. Jalkanen) johdolla osallistumassa juhlaan. Lapset lauloivat, tanssivat ja esittiviit katkelman mu' sikaalista Ann. Tunnelma oli kuin vanhan suomalaisen kansakoulun kuusijuhlassa. Juhla huipentui joulupukin saapumiseen. Kun lahjat oli avattu, yleis6 siirtyi nautti' maan emdntien joulup<!yddn antimia. Ruokaa oli joulupuurosta torttuihin ja monenlaisiin kakku ihin. Naiden vuosien aikan ar kisto on kerannyt, tuottanut, tallentanut, analysoinut ja luetteloinut ruotsin suoma lais ten historiaan ja eliim;ijn liittyvdd aineistoa. Ennen kaikkea on haluttu pelastaa jo olemassaoleva aineisto arkiston suojiin. Teollisuuden akillisten muutosten lisaksi on luonnolljsesti olemassa muitakin tekiitiita, iotka vaikuttavat ihmisten toimintaan. Sellainen on Ruotsissa ollut mm. koulupoliittinen liike, joka on halunnut ratkaista siirtolais- ja vahemmistdlasten koulukysymyksia omaehtoisen, vdhemmistdn eduista l;htevan "kulltuuripolitiikan" avulla. Wargelin former President Evangelical Lutheran church in America also known as the Suomi Synod The Pastors from Finland at the Suomi Synod The Suomi Synod, over the course of its beginning and development ( ), was served by some 87 pastors from Finland. However, there was a time when the Synod's 'lst president, Dr. J.K. Nikander, felt that the Church of Finland, was indifferent to the spiritual needs of the immigrant Finns in the united states-1 circumstances eventually changed so that it was by the help of pastors from Finland, that the Synod was able to develop. This paper reveals some of the factors having to do with the presence of these pastors in the llfe of the Synod. The information presented here is the product of the matriculum (SUO l SYNOD MlNlSTERlUlvl, ) written by this writer. Three types of F inland Pastors Seventy-five of the above-mentioned 87 clergy were o{ficial Churh of Finland pastors; in other words, graduates of the theo logical department of the University of Helsinki and ordained by the Church. The second type consisted of men {six), who had been trained as foreign missionaries (Africa and China) by the Finnish l\4issron Societv. Six other men, who had almost completed their theological studies at the University of Helsinki but ordained by the Suomi Synod, form the third group. All, however, in the minds of the immigrant Finns whom they served, were Church of Finland m nis ters.2 The rr'ajor,ty o[ thesp oastors we e qu te successful in their ministry among the im migrant Finns in the United States. There were, however, a few exceptions; men who were authoritarian and especially highchurchly.3 lt is quite possible that the indiscretions of the few have dominated the attention of most historians writing about the Synod. The majority of these Church of Finland pastors, were normal human beings, without psychotic tendencies, who realized that democracy characterized the life of people in the New World. They went about their work enjoying wholesome relations with people while doing rheir visiration work, preaching, baptizing and administering HolV Communion. For those people, who had not been diverted from the practice of their Lutheran faith by radicalism, these pastors personified the familiar voice of shepherds in the Homeland. These pastors served the Suomi Synod during the era when the Fjnnish language characterized the work of the Synod. Some were able to do pastoral work in Swedish. When the pressure to serve the people in English arose, the Finland pastors were already diminishing. However, they did represent opposition to the forthcoming use of the English language. Majority of the Pastors were young Service in the Suomi Synod, plus the opportunity to spend some time in the United States appealed to many young pastors who did not have permanent positions in one of the congregations of the Church of Fin land. Tenured positions were awailable only a{ter several years of one interim position alter another. FLrrthermore, such positions were available only to those pastors who had 12

15 appeared before the diocesan bishop's council to undergo an examination of matyrity relating 10 a theological thesis. lt was not uncommon for young pastors to serve at least in ten interim situations be' fore securing a tenurd call. A woman, whose father served in the Suomi Synod in the early 1900s, wrote about her father in this manner.... along with many other just'ordained pastors, served the immigrant Finns in the USA where the need was great, in order to get ahead more rapidly."a The average aqe of Finland pastors serving during the Pioneer Era of the Suomi Synod (1876'1890) was 32. The average age for Finland pastors during the Great Era ( ) was 30. Of the 75 official Church of Finland pastors, 31 came to the United States within the fjrst year of their ordination;9 came within the second year of their ordination;6 came within the third year of their ordination; 5 came within the fourth year of their ordination and 24 came within five or more years. Furthermore, only 14 of the 75 had completed th ir pastoral matufity examinatjon and only one held a tenured position with the Church of Finland while serving within the Suomi Synod. Forty six completed their maturity examinations upon returning to the Church of Finland. Fifteen served out their entire ministry in the Suomi Synod. The Suomi Synod Consistory maintained the clergy roster and only Synod-trained pastors and Church of Finland clergy were eligible. "Other Lutherans" were admitted to the roster only by Consistory action. 6) AccLrmulating addifional years of service by doing service abroad was a concession as well as an inducemento pastors by the Church of Finland. These additional years be came a part of the pastor's resume and appeared to his advantage when seeking placement by the dianomen chapter. 7) The high frequency for completing the pastoral maturity examination upon returning to Finland indicares that this was a pattefn for these pastors. 8) Church of Finland pastors called to early deaths were Ruben Ahlskog, HeikkiAnias, Mikko Haapala, lvlikko Havukainen, lisakki Katajamaa, K. F. Kuusisto, Eemeli W. Siikanen, and Juho Kustaa Lammi. The mortality rate was plus 13 %! 9) Sources available revealed only lour ins tances of termination of leayes of absence. However, it would seem plausible that this reason for returning was more fre- I J

19 quent. 10iThe pattern of jmmigration to the United States for Finnish clergy by provances does not seem to follow the pattern for the common run of immigrants from Fin land as indicated by immigration researchers. 11)Even though the sampling relating to the social status of the parental homes of Church of Finland pastors serving the Suomi Synod is but one th ird of the total, it is nevertheless, sufficiently significant. In other words, it allows for the possibility of extrapolating. The proportionsof the state suggesthat they are typical. Furthermore, they suggesthe presence of upward mobility. 12)Classifying the Ch. of Finland pastors according to their possible spiritual roots should not imply that the majority were the Lutherans and the others were not. What is intended is to indicate the presence of the "Little Tradition" (folk religion). However, "Beckianism" is not a "Little Trad ition". 13)The academic achievements of the Church of Finland pastors serving the Suomi Synod can be studied in comparison with the "Suomi-trained" clergy. lt is suggestive of the comparative leadership role either group had. From 1906 to 1924 the "Suomi-trained" clergy had only the eq u ivalent of high school and two years of theology; from 1925 to 1952 they had the equivalent of junior college and three years of theology; and finally from 1953 to 1962 LA. and B.D. degrees. In addition, by the 1950s the "Suomi trained" clergy had acquired 26 N,4.A's,5 Ph.D's,6 Th.D's and 1 Doctor of Education. During the Crest Period {1890 to 1930) the Church of Finland pastors were represented by 16 clergy on the Consistory, 14 as officers of the geographiconferences, i9 on the faculty of Suomi College and Theological Seminary, and 25 on the Board of Directors of the College and Seminary. The above situation prevailed for several reasons: 1) lt took time for "Suomi-trained" clergy to mature; 2) "Suomi-trained" clergy were at an academic disadvantage for a long time and 3) the immigrant generation of church members felt closer to the "homeland" pastors: By the 1930s the pendulum of leadership role had swung the other way. 14)The chart relating to the size of parishes according to the eras of the Synod re veals that the Church of Finland pastors served at the time of greatest dispersion and greatest travel burden. Obviously, much of this had to be done by horse and buggy (or for that matter by horse and sleigh) in remote rural and mining areas. '15)The democratizing influence of the American scene brought about greater participation by the Church of Finland pastors' wives in the life of the congregations. The parsonages became more open and availa ble to socialization by the parishioners. The leadership and artistic talents of the pastors'wives were an important ingredient in life of the parish. In many ways, the "pasturska" became a role model for the women of the congregations: baking, hdndwork, music, liter atu.e, appearing and speaking public. 20 Aleksa M ilojevic Yugoslav Emigration Oualitative Differentiation Yugoslav workers entered the last massive European migratory wave. which took place at the end of the '1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, with a delay of slightly less than a year. lvleasured by the situation in West Germany, the destination of the largest number of migrants, the lag was g 1/2 months. In 1972 the average duration of residence of Yugoslav workers in that country was 2.8 years, as compared with the average for toreign workers as a whole ol 3.6 years.i l Th is difference was qu ite soon obliterated, for as early as 1977 the duration of residence of the Yugoslavs and the other nationalities making up the migrant population was seen to be the same. But by 1985 the original difference was reversed: at 14.1 years. the average duration of residence ot Yugoslav migrants in West Germany far exceeded the overall average, which stood at 11.4 years.2) The emigration of Yugoslavs began mostly as a trip to West Germany. According to Yugoslavian census figures, out of the total number of emigrants, T0 70 lived and worked in that country in Time has not brought about any significant changes, and the areal structure existing at the beganning remains mostly the same. However, the economic factor tends to push the non economic ones aside and to assert itself as the primary influence. 22 Kosovo is a conspicuously underdeveloped region, with an average income of only 30 7o that ol the overall Yugoslavian average; and at the same time the region has the country's lowest rate of emigration, 2.5 %. Bight next in line comes the most advanced region, Slovenia, with a rate of 2.8 %. The explanation for the low Slovenian emigration rate must be sought in the hjgh degree of economic development reached in that republic - as well as in the exhaustion of the local sources of manpower. Besides full employment of its own inhabitants, the republic hires an extra 61,781 workers from other regions (1981 statistics), a figure that amounts to 7.7 o/o ol the total labor iorce.5) On the other hand, Macedonia, which is characterized by a rather low level of material development 61 '/" ot the national average -, registers the highest rate of emigration, 5.3 o/o. Here we see a high migration rate alongside lagging development. This situation is ih complete contrast to that prevailing in Kosovo. where an extremely low emigration rate accompanies underdeveloped conditjons. The situation is similar as far as the total immigrant population is concerned too. While the number of Yugoslav citizens has fallen by 21 70, the total number of immi grants in West Germany has at the same tlme lncreased by 36 %. Since, as a rule, it is the older workers that go back home, this is also an important factor influencing the reduction in the age differences be veen the immigrant groups.
