Global Trends in Engineering Education
Global Trends in Engineering Education FUTURE Engineering profession Students should be introduced to the essence of engineering early in their undergraduate careers. What is Engineering? What are Engineering Processes? Who are Engineers? New breed of graduates with an engineering-based liberal education An excellent preparation for many other careers and professions: business, law, medicine, consulting, and government service
Essence of Engineering science aims to understand the world, whereas engineering aims to change it science aims to build theories that are true, while engineering aims to make things that work The disciplines have different aims models or theories for science, artifacts or processes for engineers...
Engineering Process The Engineering Process is about decisions and optimized solutions as opposed to conclusions. In short, it is about: analysis synthesis evaluation execution Engineering is the development of Knowledge (scientia), new made things (techné) and/or new ways of working and doing (praxis) with the purpose of creating new useful products (artifacts) or services.
Who are Engineers? The people who practice engineering, is larger than generally recognized. It comprises not only those who call themselves engineers, but all those who practice engineering, wittingly or unwittingly, in the course of their professional activities, people who do not necessarily wish to identify themselves with engineering.
The need for a dramatically different kind of engineer: A Global Engineer The highly analytical, technically-focused engineering nerd is a person of the past. Different types of institutions and programs are clearly necessary to prepare students for highly diverse roles:
Supply of Global Engineers Engineering education worldwide is not providing an adequate supply of globally prepared engineers. Both new technologies (e.g., info-bio-nano) and the complex mega systems problems arising in contemporary society require highly interdisciplinary engineering teams characterized by broad intellectual span rather than focused practice within the traditional disciplines.
Traditional strengths Application-oriented systems know-how. Tradition of experimental research. Societal interaction & impact, and expertise in engineering.
Past and Present 1849 1908 2007 2010 2011 Technical School of Helsinki Finnish University of Technology received university standing: Architecture, Surveying, Structural Eng., Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering and General Department. Helsinki University of Technology TKK divided into four faculties TKK became part of Aalto University and was renamed Aalto University School of Science and Technology. Where Science and Art meet Technology and Business Aalto University School of Science and Technology was divided into four new schools of technology as of January 1st, 2011. The new schools were formed of the former university faculties of TKK.

Vuonna 2013 korkeakoululla on yhteinen insinöörialan kandidaattiohjelma.
