Challenging Collaboration: Using SharePoint as a Although Microsoft sells Collaboration Tool SharePoint as a collaboration tool, it really isn t. It is a process and storage tool, and actually does a reasonable job at that. Many of our larger clients have thousands (if not millions) of documents stored in SharePoint. But in terms of supporting collaborative interactions between team members, SharePoint has some bolt-on technology at best. SharePoint architecture, which is not inherently collaborative, is based on a much older model of publish and subscribe. It is very top-down and hierarchy supportive, more like a Web 1.0 (or pre-web) application than today s Web 2.0 social applications. Doculabs perspective SharePoint 2010 s social computing capabilities are basic. Our analysis indicates that SharePoint is not yet sufficient as an Enterprise 2.0 platform for organizations that want comprehensive social computing features in areas such as unified activity streams, community building, conversation centric collaboration, and advanced notifications and recommendations. Enhancing SharePoint 2010 will be expensive. For organizations intent on using SharePoint as an Enterprise 2.0 solution, customization and/or third-party Web Parts will be required which likely will be time consuming and expensive (with potential up-front costs ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, plus ongoing maintenance expense). Organizations serious about Enterprise 2.0 now should consider a purpose-built tool, rather than customizing SharePoint or using third party Web Parts. SharePoint customers that are ready for social computing now may not want to wait for the next major SharePoint upgrade, which will certainly have improved social capabilities but will likely not be released until 2013 or later (based on Microsoft s history) 36
