Accessible design 1/2 - Products and services are designed so that they can be used by everyone without any special arrangments - Target groups: anyone who is in a difficult usage situation, handicapped, elderlies - Note: handicapped and elderlies are not homogenous groups - Difficult to attain in a product
Accessible design 2/2 Everyone s capabilities change continously physical, mental, social performance environment, task, instruments, situation e.g. while driving a car you keep your eyes on the road and your hands in the wheel Technology that has been designed into extreme situations works also in everyday life
Terminology accessibility, accessible design Universal design (U.S) Design for all (Spain, Europe) inclusive design or barrier free design, transgenerational design Relate mostly to environment Mainstreaming not isolate the handicapped
Practice (plenty of information) www.w3c.org/wai - Web Accessability Initiative research, development, instructing.. www.nkl.fi Finnish federation for the visually impaired- easy to use web instructions (in Finnish) http://www.jhs-suositukset.fi/ - Public Administration Recommendations Accessibility is not required by the law (in Finland).
Users physical limitations visual disabilities weak-sightedness ( a lot cf. glasses) visually impaired (Finland 80 000, 10 000 of which blind) color blindness (male 8%, female 1%) hearing disabilities hearing limitations (Finland 700 000 or 7/50) deafs cognitive limitations dyslexic (about every 10. Finn) mental disabilities neurological states Epilepsy (Finland 45 000 or 1/200 adulsts, 1/100 child) Musculoskeletal Disorders, e.g. rheumatism and MS-disease Expands into: hands-free and eyes-free Small devices and a challenging situation
Accessibility vs. usability Accessible website may contain usability problems and vice versa Parly overlapping: A good usability evaluation also points out accessibility problems Normally a small user group is considerend when designing usability
Source: 1997 STAKES / Hannele Hyppönen 14.03.2002 TKK Focus of the design Main group: majority (Mainstream) elderlies handicapped intersection contains a product that has been designed for the majority but is also suitable to handicapped elderlies
Task consider the accessiblity of your product: which special groups have been considered and how? which groups have difficulties using the product? Why? Present your results on a slide
Other courses T-121.600 Usability evaluation T-121.700 User-centered concept design T-121.800 User-centered design project other T-121. courses Unfortunately the courses are mainly in Finnish
