S-81.2110 Power Electronics Exam 12.1.2015 Answer all five questions (in English, Finnish or Swedish). Questions in Finnish are on the reverse side. 1. In a Buck converter the output current is assumed to be a constant DC of I o = 6 A. The switching frequency f s = 200 khz, input voltage V in = 24 V and output voltage V o = 10 V. The MOSFET used in the converter has the following switching times: rise and fall times of current t ri = 28 ns, t fi = 15 ns, fall and rise times of voltage t fv = 22 ns, t rv = 25 ns. The on-state resistance of the MOSFET R DS;on = 20 m. (a) Calculate the average switching power loss and the average conduction loss in the MOSFET. (b) The diode has a forward voltage drop V FM = 0,7 V. Calculate the average forward power loss in the diode. (c) Calculate the efficiency of the converter. What is the efficiency of a linear power supply in the same operating point? 2. In a buck (step-down) converter, the input voltage Vin = 10 V, the switching frequency fs = 100 khz, and the switch duty ratio D = 0,75. Draw the waveform of the unfiltered output voltage. Calculate its average value and the rms magnitudes of its harmonic components at 100 khz and 200 khz.. A three-phase thyristor rectifier is connected to a 50 Hz supply with an rms line-to-line voltage of 400 V. Assume that the thyristors are ideal and that the load is an ideal DC current source of 50 A. (a) Draw the input and output voltage and current waveforms when the control angle is 60. (b) Derive equations for and calculate the average value of the DC voltage, the total harmonic distortion of the line current and (c) the active power consumed by the rectifier. As there is no line inductance on the ac-side the commutation time can be ignored. 4. The single-phase inverter shown in the figure below operates in square-wave area, i.e. the switching pole is connected to the positive dc-bus half of the time and second half to the bus. There is a phase displacement of 180 degrees between A and B. We are assuming that the output current i o is sinusoidal and delayed 60 degrees in respect to the voltage v o. a) Draw the waveforms of the voltages v Ao, v Bo, v AB and currents i o, i TA+, i DA+ ja i TB+, i DB+, i d. b) Calculate the output power and the mean value of the dc-current i d when the peak value of the output current i o is 50 A and the dc-voltage V d = 00 V. 5. Compare with each other line- and self-commutated converters. Also the names line-frequency and switch-mode are used. What are the differences in the operating principles of these two converter types and what are the advantages and disadvantages. Also, give an example of a converter operating with each principle. 1 Fourier-series: f ( t) a0 ahcos h t bhsin h t 2 h 1 1 2 1 2 ah ( )cos, 0,, ( )sin, 1,, f t h t d t h b 0 h f t n t d t h 0
S-81.2110 Power Electronics Exam 12.1.2015 Vastaa kaikkiin viiteen kysymykseen joko suomeksi, ruotsiksi tai englanniksi. Kysymykset englanniksi löytyvät paperin toiselta puolelta. 1. Jännitettä laskevan katkojan (Buck) lähtövirta oletetaan ideaaliseksi tasavirraksi I o = 6 A. Kytkemistaajuus f s = 200 khz, tulojännite V in = 24 V sekä lähtöjännite V o = 10 V. Katkojassa käytetyn MOSFETin kytkentä-ajat ovat: virran nousu- ja laskuaika t ri = 28 ns, t fi = 15 ns sekä jännitteen lasku- ja nousuaika t fv = 22 ns, t rv = 25 ns. MOSFETin johtotilan vastus R DS;on = 20 m. (a) Laske kytkentäjakson häviöteho ja johtohäviöt MOSFETissa. (b) Diodin päästöjännite V FM = 0,7 V. Laske diodin häviöteho. (c) Laske katkojan hyötysuhde. Mikä on lineaarisen teholähteen hyötysuhde vastaavassa toimintapisteessä? 2. Kolmivaiheinen tyristoritasasuuntaaja on kytketty 50 Hz verkkoon, jonka pääjännitteen tehollisarvo on 400 V. Tyristorit oletetaan ideaalisiksi ja kuorma ideaaliseksi 50 A tasavirtalähteeksi. 4. Alla oleva yksivaiheinen vaihtosuuntaaja toimii täydellä ohjauksella eli vaihtokytkin on kytkettynä puolet ajasta positiiviseen dc-jännitteeseen ja puolet kiskon. Pisteiden A ja B jännitteiden välillä on 180 asteen vaihesiirto. Lähtövirta i o oletetaan sinimuotoiseksi ja se on 60 astetta jäljessä lähtöjännitettä v o. c) Piirrä jännitteiden v Ao, v Bo, v AB ja virtojen i o, i TA+, i DA+ ja i TB+, i DB+,.i d käyrämuodot. d) Laske lähtöteho ja tasavirran i d keskiarvo kun lähtövirran i o huippuarvo on 50 A ja tasajännite V d = 00 V. 5. 1 Fourier-sarja: f ( t) a0 ahcos h t bhsin h t 2 h 1 1 2 1 2 ah ( )cos, 0,, ( )sin, f t h t d t h b 0 h f t n t d t 0 h 1,,
S-81.2110 Power Electronics Solutions, Exam 12.1.2015 Question 1 The average switching losses are P sw = 1 2 V ini o (t c,on + t c,off )f s 1, W where t c,on = t ri + t fv and t c,off = t rv + t fi and the given data is applied. The duty ratio is = V o V in 0,42. Hence, the average conduction losses in the MOSFET are P cond = DR DS,on I o 2 0,02 W. The average forward power loss in the diode is P diode,f = (1 D)V FM I o 2,46 W. The average output power is P o = V o I o = 60 W. The efficiency is The efficiency of a linear power supply is η = V oi o V in I in = V o V in 41,7 % η = P o P o = 9,7% P in P o + P sw +P cond +P diode,f since I o = I in holds in the case of linear power supplies.
QUESTION 2
QUESTION DC voltage follows one of the line-to-line voltages and it repeats similar six times during a period of the line voltage. When control angle is used the turning of the thyristors is delayed the same amount. Therefore, average of the DC voltage can be calculated as: V d = 1 2 6 6 +α 2V rms cos x dx = 2V rms (sin ( 6 + α) sin ( 6 + α)) 6 +α 270.1 V This can be calculated as shown on Pages 28-29 of the textbook too. = 2V rms cos(α) In order to find the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the line current the rms values of the line current and its fundamental are necessary. Line current is positive for 120 degrees, zero 60 degrees, negative 120 degrees and again zero 60 degrees during one line cycle. This means that it differs from zero 2/rds of the line cycle. The line current s rms value is I rms = 1 2 2 i2 dx = 1 0 i2 dx = I d 1 2 = I d 2 40.82 A When using the same place of origo as in calculating the rms value and by using the Fourier series, the rms value of the line current s 1st harmonic is I 1 = 1 2 2 i cos x dx = 2 2 I dsin ( ) = 6 I d 9 A Then by definition the THD is: THD = I distortion I 1 = I 2 2 rms I 1 = I 1 P 2 6 2 = 2 9 1 0.1 6 = V d I d 1.5 kw As the rectifier can be considered ideal (no losses) power can be calculated from the AC side too: P = VI 1 cos φ = VI 1 cos α = 400 9 cos(60) W 1.5 kw The phase shift between voltage and fundamental component of current is equal to the control angle.
