Tarmo Ahvenainen / University of Jyväskylä Language proficiency -related face concerns Face has been under a vibrant research in recent years, but the role of language proficiency has not found its place in the research into face more than in passing. While the study of foreign language anxiety have partly dealt with the face phenomenon, its approach has been limited on the speaker s own vulnerability only. Adopting the concept of face allows to also study the concern of the interlocutor s vulnerable language user image. So far, a L2 speaker s image as a proficient user of the language with a specific reference to face has been only touched in several studies (e.g. Haugh 2009:14-15; Auer and Eastman 2010:100; Hynninen 2011: 971). This paper aims to discuss these language proficiency -related face concerns mainly as one instance of competence face (Lim and Bowers 1991; Lim 1994: 210-211). The empirical study involves interaction and interview material from an international university student workshop where students with three L1 s from two European UAS s communicated in English. The focus of the analysis was on passages with clear signals or symptoms of understanding problems. The interview answers were analyzed in the spirit of discourse analysis, focusing on how participants comment on their language-related feelings and their images as language users. The participants reported to have paid attention in the interaction both to their own and the other s image, i.e. face as a language user. There was, however, notable person-to-person variation in the sensitivity of the proficiency face, as well as in different sources of face threat (e.g. the fear of speaking incorrectly vs. the fear of not being understood). Eva Havu / University of Helsinki Eriävän näkemyksen esittäminen poliittisia tapahtumia käsittelevissä ranskankielisissä nettikirjoituksissa The expression of dissent in French Internet texts discussing political events Englanninkielisessä esityksessäni tarkastelen eriävän näkemyksen esittämistä poliittisia tapahtumia käsittelevissä poleemisissa nettikirjoituksissa.
Tuuli Holttinen / University of Helsinki Situational variation in French interlanguage request modification Requests have traditionally been viewed as inherently Face Threatening Acts because by imposing a certain behavior they threaten the hearer s freedom of action (Brown & Levinson 1987). Due to their facethreatening nature, requests are often modified or mitigated so that they would not be perceived as threatening and so that there would be a bigger chance for the speaker to get their request realized. Request strategies and request modification differ from one language and situation to another, which may be problematic to foreign language learners: how to act politely or appropriately in different social situations when the norms in source and target language differ from each other? Request strategies and request modification have not been studied among Finnish learners of French, which is why this paper focuses on the development and situational variation of request strategies of this particular learner group. The study will show how lexical and syntactic request modification varies between native and non-native speakers of French in different situations in data collected with a written Discourse Completion Test. 4
Nina Isolahti, FT, yliopiston lehtori TaY Aleksandr Zelenin, FT, yliopiston lehtori TaY Mikhail Mikhailov, FT, professori TaY Hymy hymyä houkuttelemassa Dialogitulkkaus on monikielinen vuorovaikutustapahtuma, jossa viestin vastaanottaja vastaanottaa verbaalisen viestin ymmärtämällään kielellä aikaviiveellä. Näin viestin verbaalisen ja ei-verbaalisen sisällön välille muodostuu ajallinen viivästymä. Pystyykö vastaanottaja kohdistamaan puhujan ilmeet ja eleet ja sanotun viestin keskenään? Esitelmässämme selostamme kuinka puhujan ei-verbaalisten keinojen ilmaisema affektisuus välittyy tai jää välittämättä viestin vastaanottajalle dialogitulkkauksessa. Tarkastamme, välittyykö hymyillä ilmaistun viestin humoristinen tai ironinen sävy vieraskieliselle keskustelukumppanille tulkkauksen kautta. Tarkkailemme, aikaansaako puhujan humoristinen tai ironinen hymy keskustelukumppanin vastaavan/toivotun reaktion. Aineistona käytämme tulkkaustilanteiden videonauhoitteita. 5
