Faifhfulness in treating God's gifts Matthew 25:14-30 Ari Savuoja Sermon at St. Luke s Chapel, 17 August 2014 Translation into English by Bastian Fähnrich (see Finnish version at p. 6) Matthew 25:14-30 The Parable of the Talents Jesus said: 14 For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more. 21 His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more. 23 His master said
to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours. 26 But his master answered him, You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Nowadays it is quite common that a even a large multinational company goes bankrupt. A large firm bankruptcy can swing the entire global economy towards recession. But have you ever wondered why, in fact, a company goes bankrupt. Basically it is for the same reason as why one of the servants decided to dug and hide the master s money in the ground instead of bringing it to the bank for interest: the reason was fear. But fear of what? The fear of an earthquake on the other side of the world - no. The fear that tens of thousands die every day from hunger - no.
The fear that environmental pollution spoils nature - no. The fear that moral negligence or indifference overthrows society - No, no and no. But what is the fear all about: the fear is about MYSELF. That things will not work out well for ME. The fear that I'll lose something. The fear that something bad happens to me. Me, me and me. Of course, we can say that after all, fear or fearing something is human and natural, and in certain situations, it is also healthy. We each have a God-given selfpreservation instinct. So, there is also a healthy fear. But even this healthy fear is being twisted by us humans. But the one guilty of twisting the truth is not God, but you and I alone - we ourselves. Maybe someone may now think that "huh, luckily I do not have any gifts (or talents) received from God, so I cannot use them wrongly." But this is wrong thinking. Such an attitude is even more twisted than the one of the servant with the single talent! For the truth is that all of us have received something as a gift, if nothing else then at least the gift of life. And most of us know how to speak and walk, or do something with our hands. The talents described in the Bible are not mere talents or abilities of doing something for in the text it is said that the talents were given to each according to his ability. So the talents were given according the each ones ability. What is given to us according to our abilities: duties and responsibility. God has given all of us a duty and responsibility in the world and in the church. If we forget our duty and our responsibility, then we dug them into the ground, and we have to
measure up for negligence on the last judgment. This is the main message of today s gospel text! This is a hard command and tough requirement, and Jesus wanted to bring this message across to the people listening to him, and to us as well. We are not in a better position than the ancient listeners: we have exactly the same problem as in the time of Jesus: we are lazy, and even when we do something, we are failing and incomplete. And yet, we know the same thing as that one talent servant, when he said, Master, I knew you to be a hard man. Now we are getting to the heart of today's Gospel. Namely, what do you think: of whom, of what kind of master is the servant talking about. I do not think that the talk is about the God of Christianity, because of him we have heard many times how he is gracious and merciful! And, perhaps, we have also read likewise from the Bible about God s character. So who is this master? Based on today's Bible text we may also raise the question why the other two servants were not afraid, why they did not fear. How did they dare taking a risk and putting their duty and responsibility into practice. Yes, it is true, the text speaks of two kinds of people. But the point here is not whether the one kind of person has carried out his duty and responsibility such as the five and two talent servants, and the other one has not done so, but has buried the single talent in the ground. The point here is to understand the kind of relationships that the five, two and one talent servants are having with their master. The five and two talent servants would have had every reason to fear even more than the one talent servant, for they had to lose much more! But that did not happen. They
were not afraid. Why? Because of the fact that their relationship to the master was completely different from the one talent servant. Also, our, yours and my relationship with the master will be eventually decisive when we will be facing the last judgment. Will He only punish us, or will He be merciful for Christ s sake. Or, worst of all, do we think that He does not exist, and that we won t be held accountable to Him. Today's gospel has been a tough demonstration of God s law and justice and our accountability to him. We might easily think that "fortunately, I'm not the kind of person like the one talent servant," but "I am just like, at least, the two talent servant, because I am such and such a good believer and a Christian." But if we think like that, then we are just like the Pharisees, hypocritical people who have not yet fully realised our own sinfulness and guilt before God. But on the other hand: when we feel that we are like the kind of unfortunate servant, the one talent servant, then the law of God and its requirements reveal to us the truth about ourselves. The truth is that you and I do not really have performed well in our duty and responsibility. But we oftentimes have neglected them and failed: you and I, we've been lazy, worthless and unfaithful in treating God's gifts. Only when we realise this, and when we confess and ask for forgiveness, only then can happen the miracle to us of believing that Christ's holiness is covering our insufficiency. When God is then looking at us, he sees only the holiness, perfection and purity of his Son. Only through Christ's atoning blood we shall have peace, joy and rest - rest before God s almighty and just holiness.
Only because of Christ we are like the five and two talent servants, such as whom God sees completely faithful, worthy and successful in the treating of our worldly and temporal gifts, and performing of our duties and responsibility. That is not all, for only thanks to Christ we dare to carry out our everyday tasks, and we are not anymore afraid or need to have fear to do so and even risk our lives. Even still, we know of God's holiness and righteousness, and a hard man concerning the enforcement of his will. But even then we will, however, again and again, read and hear the word of God which says that Christ Jesus has atoned for our sins, and removed our guilt. Based on this we can also say as it is being said in the end of today s Gospel: 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The worthless servant is the one who consciously, by his own choice, rejects God or his forgiveness. For the one who rejects the grace of the God of the Bible, does not have any other god or anyone else to turn to for mercy. So on the last judgment it will be taken away even away that which he or she had, namely the temporal life and its gifts. Let s pray: Holy God, have mercy on us, your unfaithful and insufficient and unreliable servants. Do not let us ever imagine that we could avoid your judgment by our own help and ability. Give us always humility, and protect us from becoming pride. Thank you that you let us experience difficulties and tribulations, failures and shortcomings,
as these keep us humble in your presence. Amen.
Uskollisuus Jumalan lahjojen hoitamisessa Matt. 25: 14-30 Ari Savuoja Saarna Pyhän Luukkaan kappelissa 17.8.2014 Englanninkielinen käännös, Bastian Fähnrich Tämän sunnuntain evankeliumi: Matt. 25: 14-30 Jeesus sanoi: "14.
Pohjimmiltaan taustalla on sama syy, miksi yhden talentin saanut palvelijakin jätti rahansa maahan, eikä vienyt niitä kasvamaan korkoa pankkiin: syy oli pelko. Meillä jokaisella on Jumalan antama itsesäilytysvietti.
Miten he uskalsivat ottaa riskin ja panna tehtävänsä käytäntöön.
Silloinkin me saamme kuitenkin yhä uudestaan
Aamen.
