TSSF Novice Notes Serving: Study For reflection: 1. What elements of your life would you term study? How do these help your faith develop? From the Principles: The Second Way of Service: Study And this is eternal life: that they may know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3 True knowledge is knowledge of God. Tertiaries therefore give priority to devotional study of scripture as one of the chief means of attaining that knowledge of God which leads to eternal life. As well as the devotional study of Scripture, all recognise their Christian responsibility to pursue other branches of study, both sacred and secular. In particular there are members of the Third Order who accept the duty of contributing, through their research and writing, to a better understanding of the church s mission in the world: the application of Christian principles to the use and distribution of wealth; questions concerning justice and peace; and of all other questions concerning the life of faith. What a relief that Christianity is a revealed religion! God doesn t leave us in a vacuum to try to figure out what kind of a God he is and how he wants us to live. Instead we have a picture of Jesus, who said those who had seen him had seen the Father, and access to God s teaching through his prophets and other servants. Most of us would rush to read a letter (or email!) from someone who loves us, yet how slow we are sometimes to read this communication from the God who loves us more than anyone else ever Kolmannen sääntökunnan, pyhän Franciscuksen yhteisön noviisitehtävät Palvelun tie: Opiskelu Mietittäväksi: 1.
will. Of course, reading the Bible isn t always as easy as reading a letter from a friend. It contains so many different types of communication letters, songs of praise, history, prophecy and so on, each of which need understanding within the context of the type of literature they are and the culture they were written in. Just reading a bit from the Bible each day is great, but to really get to grips with Bible study it s helpful to use some Bible reading notes, a Study Bible or a good commentary. It s also important to save time to pray about what you ve read and to be open to anything which particularly strikes you as applying to your own life. For reflection: 2. What form does your Bible study take currently? What challenges you and what encourages you in your Bible study? As the passage from the Principles says, Bible study is important, but not the only aspect of study. We can also learn about God, his world, other people and how to live from a wide range of sources non-fiction books, novels, newspapers, sermon tapes, videos, music, drama, pictures and other visual arts, spending time consciously looking at God s creation and raising our awareness of life generally. This reflection is an important element to study it s not just about reading. In fact for those whose paid work includes a lot of reading or research already, part of the discipline of their study may just be to sit and think, or mull things over whilst walking or taking some other form of exercise! 3. Are there any ways in which you would like to broaden or develop the study aspect of your life? What did St Francis think of study? Minkä tyyppistä on oma Raamatun opiskelusi tällä hetkellä? 3. Olisiko mitään tapoja, joiden avulla haluaisit laajentaa tai kehittää opiskeluasi? Mitä Fransiskus ajatteli opiskelusta?
He s reputed not to have been too keen on books saying that if his brothers had books, they would only need bookcases to keep them in! However, he paid great attention to what the Bible said and he committed this to his excellent memory, as he did with other insights. This was very much in keeping with the oral/aural culture of the Middle Ages. In this culture, books were luxury items a decent book could cost the equivalent of a bank manager s salary for six months. Things are different today, and we aren t called to a literal following of all Francis teachings, but what can his attitude say to us? Perhaps that we need to hold on to books, videos or whatever, lightly and be willing to share or give them to others, not to be weighed down by a love of possessions? Perhaps also to keep a sharp eye out for pride in our knowledge. In Proverbs, we are urged to gain wisdom, not knowledge. Not that there s anything wrong with knowledge in itself, but if it s not accompanied by wisdom, it can be a disaster. How do we gain wisdom? James says If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5) The Psalmist says The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. (Ps 111:10) Our study, of whatever kind, needs to be accompanied by prayer, reflection and a spirit which is longing to find and obey God s word. Action: Discuss with your Novice Guardian which of the following might be appropriate:- - Consider whether you need to review your Bible study habits. You might like to choose a set of study notes or something else to help you.
Try to stick to a routine over the period before your next meeting. What did you learn from this? - Have a look at the theme of wisdom in the Bible. Start by following up references to it from a concordance. You might also like to look at Proverbs 1-4 and Psalm 119. Note down what these references say wisdom is and how we can develop it. - If you don t already do so, would you find it useful to join a small group for bible study? Many churches run home groups, or you could meet informally with a friend. Some TSSF local groups study the Bible together on a regular basis. Consider using a journal to help you reflect on your life. Some people like to jot down what s happened each day and use it as a focus for prayer. Alternatively, you might like to jot down reflections on programmes you ve seen on TV, or the radio news, sharing what you have learnt with others whatever helps you think about life. You could spend time raising your awareness of the world around you seeing God in creation. Perhaps there is another idea which would be helpful? Further reading - How to read the Bible for all it s worth, G Fee & D Stuart (Scripture Union 1994) a reasonably detailed, but also accessible guide to understanding the different types of literature in the Bible. - Francis of Assisi: The Early Documents, vols. 1 & 2, Index (New City Press, 1999- ) a wealth of documents which reveal the shape of early Franciscanism. Yritä pitää rutiinista kiinni seuraavaan tapaamiseen asti. Mitä opit tästä? Tarkastele viisauden teemaa Raamatussa. Vaihtoehtoisesti voisit ehkä kirjoittaa muistiin pohdintoja joistakin tvohjelmista, radiouutisista, siitä mitä on oppinut toisilta ihmisiltä mikä tahansa sitten auttaakin mietiskelemään elämää. Voisit käyttää aikaa siihen, että lisäät tietoisuuttasi ympäröivästä maailmasta näkemällä Jumalan luomakunnassa. Olisiko vielä jokin idea, joka olisi hyödyllinen? Miettikääpä mitä lukemianne kirjoja voisitte suositella aiheesta toisillekin. Tässä mukana suositellut englanninkieliset kirjat.
