The course also provides useful tips for preparing a high quality research plan, writing a CV and calculating a budget for a research project. During the course, each participant prepares a competitive funding application for e.g., the Finnish Cultural Foundation (deadline for applications is traditionally on October 31; see or other funding source. 3 TRI 3A Metodologiset ja metodiset sekä tieteellisen kirjoittamisen opinnot Methodological studies and scientific writing TILASTOMENETELMÄT JA SPSS-OHJELMA (STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS WITH SPSS) Syyskuu 2014 Opettaja: Statistikko Eero Laakkonen Tavoitteet: Kurssilla käydään läpi kvantitatiivisen tutkimusaineiston käsittelyä SPSS-ohjelmalla. Kurssin tavoitteena on antaa tohtorikoulutettaville omassa väitöskirjatyössä tarvittavia kvantitatiivisen aineiston käsittelytaitoja. Sisältö: Työpajoissa (12 h) käydään läpi kvantitatiivisen aineiston muokkaamiseen ja kuvailuun liittyviä vaiheita sekä tyypillisiä analyysimenetelmiä SPSS-ympäristössä. Lisäksi tutustutaan sähköiseen aineistonkeruuseen (nettilomakkeet ja Webropol). Osallistujat: Kaikki kvantitatiivisen aineiston parissa työskentelevät kasvatustieteiden tohtoriohjelman jatko-opiskelijat, joilla on tilastolliset perustiedot ja kokemusta SPSS-ohjelmasta. Should at least five English-speaking doctoral candidates sign up for the course, a separate course/workshops will be held in English. The course gives skills for working on quantitative data. The workshops concentrate on editing and describing data, typical analysis methods on SPSS and electronic data collecting (internet surveys and Webropol). The course participants are expected to have basic knowledge about quantitative methods and some experience about SPSS programme. 4 NEW STATISTICS: The limits of p and the changing requirements of scientific publications October 2014 Teachers: Academy Professor Erno Lehtinen, Statistician Eero Laakkonen, Post-doc Researcher Jake McMullen ECTS: 1 Objectives and learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to deal with the current trend in using statistical analyses in the social sciences and the changing requirements for presenting methods and statistical data in scientific publications. After the course, participants will be aware of the limitations of classical statistical methods such as significance testing and the proposed alternatives aimed at overcoming these deficiencies. Participants will also get practical skills to, among other things; calculate effect sizes and confidence intervals. The course also includes practical training of writing methods chapters according to the changing requirements. Contents: Reading package students read before the face-to-face course, opening lectures (2 h) and workshops (4h) based on exercises with participants own data. 5 PUBLISHING RESEARCH RESULTS September 2014 spring 2015 NOTE! In order to complete the study module TRI 3A, all doctoral candidates are required to complete a course on scientific writing or publishing. Teachers: Professor Kai Hakkarainen, Visiting Professor Martin Lawn (University of Edinburgh, Centre for Educational Sociology), University Research Fellow Piia Seppänen, University Research Fellow Janne Lepola, Professor Marja Vauras ECTS: 4 Objectives and learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to improve students ability to publish their research results by offering advice on how to write a good article and discussing the basic steps of publication process (selecting a journal, passing the editorial filters, reacting to reviewer and editor comments, resubmitting your work etc.) In the workshops participants work on a manuscript intended for publication in a scientific journal on national or international forums. The manuscript can either be a full article (disseminating the research results) or a review paper (critical synthesis of a specific research topic). Contents: Lectures (3 h) and workshops (16 h). During the course participants are expected to write a manuscript for a national or an international scientific publication. Between the workshops students are also encouraged to arrange meetings themselves as a peer group, to read and comment each other s manuscripts. 8 SPRING 2015 TRI 3A Metodologiset ja metodiset sekä tieteellisen kirjoittamisen opinnot Methodological studies and scientific writing INTRODUCTION TO META-ANALYSIS February 2015 Teacher: Prof. Dr. Andreas Gegenfurtner (Maastricht University) ECTS: 3 Objectives and learning outcomes: In this workshop, participants will get acquainted with what metaanalysis is, how meta-analysis can be used as an analytic tool in research on learning and instruction, and how data for meta-analysis can be collected, analyzed, and reported. In part one, we start with discussing reasons for doing meta-analysis and outline similarities and differences to traditional literature reviews; we also focus on different ways on how data for meta-analyses can be selected and coded. In part two, we compare techniques to meta-analyze correlational and experimental data, and we demonstrate how these data can be corrected for study design artifacts, particularly for sampling error, error of measurement, and moderator effects. In part three, the reporting of meta-analytic findings will be discussed with a focus on numerical and visual displays; we also describe what journal reviewers typically look for when evaluating your meta-analytic manuscript. Throughout the workshop, a special emphasis is put on correlational (Pearson s r) and experimental data (Cohen s d); for time reasons, we will not discuss odds ratios that are used in many medical and clinical research settings. Contents: The workshop (24 h) will use a variety of methods, including lectures, demonstrations, and a multitude of hands-on activities to scaffold transfer of the course content to the participants own research projects. Participants: All doctoral candidates or personnel of the University of Turku interested in using metaanalysis; basic knowledge in statistics and in the software package SPSS is expected. 9 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS WORKSHOP OF QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS Spring 2015 Teachers: Professor Jukka Husu and Senior Lecturer Marjo Nieminen Objectives and learning outcomes: The workshop focuses on working with participants own qualitative data sets with the aim of finding suitable methods for efficient data analysis and producing (preliminary) research findings. Contents: Workshops (6 h). Students prepare for the workshops by writing a report about the situation of their research and data analysis and listing the questions or problems they have about the data analysis. Participants: All doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Education with a qualitative data set at least partly collected. Maximum of 20 participants (two groups will be formed). The doctoral candidates will perform Structural Equation Modeling analyses by working with exemplary or with the participants own data sets. Contents: Lectures (4 h) and workshops (10 h). During the course students are expected to complete the exercises provided by the teachers and write a research report. Participants: All doctoral candidates interested in statistical analyses and/or collecting or planning to collect data suitable for SEM analysis. Basic statistical skills are required. Maximum of 12 doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Education and 8 doctoral candidates from other faculties. Language: Finnish. NOTE! Objectives and learning outcomes: This reading seminar focuses on the latest research traits in the area of research on learning and instruction. Participants will familiarize themselves with scientific articles from journals and handbooks and discuss their topics. The general aim is to support the participants writing of the doctoral thesis as well as the writing of scientific articles. Contents: The course consists of reading seminars (8 h). During the course the participants are expected to read the articles provided by the teacher and prepare a summary of one article. Participants: All doctoral candidates of the Doctoral Program OPPI.
