6 the presence of history Tampere was founded on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids in The town blossomed with the coming of industrialisation in the late 19th century. The Finlayson, Tampella and Kehräsaari factory complexes still stand as monuments to the city s industrial past. Today they are home to restaurants, cinemas, quaint shops and halls for festive occasions. In Tampere, the past and the present literally live side by side. Two universities and a university of applied sciences with a wide range of disciplines make Tampere a mecca for scientists and a place that inspires innovation. Tampere has a cutting-edge university hospital, and the city is home to numerous research institutions particularly in the fields of technology and medicine. 8 between east and west Tampere is easily accessible from all directions. There are numerous direct flights from European cities to Tampere- Pirkkala Airport. In addition one can easily reach Tampere from various parts of the world via the hubs of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Riga, as well as Helsinki. Tampere lies in the heart of Finland. Three quarters of the country s population live within two hours of Tampere. There are good rail and bus connections with other parts of Finland. 9 In Tampere, the distance between the hotel and the congress centre was short, which made it easy to get around. Our hotel was extremely pleasant, and the food was generally excellent. It has frequently been evaluated the best congress centre in Finland. The spectrum of conference venues is broad and varied. You can choose a downtown hotel, a spa, a course centre in the bosom of nature or a modern conference centre in the heart of the town. 10 culture for every taste The performing arts hold pride of place in Tampere. It has two main theatres, and there are several smaller theatrical companies as well as a circus and dance groups. Not for nothing is it called the theatre capital of Finland. The town has plenty to offer music-lovers, too. For example, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra gives weekly concerts in Tampere Hall. Throughout the year there is a wide variety of performances and festivals from the numerous musical events to Tampere Theatre Festival and Tampere Film Festival.

But the town s food culture has a lot more to tempt your palate. Try sampling the wide range of products of the surrounding countryside. You can find the produce of independent local producers and bakeries in the covered market or in summer in one of the busy outdoor markets. The pure flavours of the North and the gifts of nature berries, fish, mushrooms and game are a gastronomic revelation. Time to celebrate Tampere offers a wide variety of places to enjoy yourself in the evening. 22 Aleksin Ravintolat Tiiliholvi is a reliable choice for a gala dinner. Tiiliholvi on varma valinta tunnelmalliselle illalliselle. Restaurant Aleksis Restaurant Aleksis is located in the Technopolis building, next to the University of Tampere. It can seat up to 350 dinner guests or up to 600 cocktail party guests when merged with the foyer. Aleksis is the perfect choice for meeting catering in the Technopolis building. In the daytime it offers a smooth lunch service with a fresh and healthy menu. In the evenings the restaurant can be converted into an intimate space for events with dinner served at the table or buffet-style. Restaurant Tiiliholvi Restaurant Tiiliholvi is located in the cellar of an Art Nouveau building in the heart of the city centre. It has long traditions and prides itself on classic French cuisine with a Scandinavian twist. Tiiliholvi s wine cellar provides the perfect complement to its menu. The main dining room can provide seating for up to 90 people, while the maximum number of guests is 170. Restaurant Laterna Laterna s history goes all the way back to the 1890s. Its dining rooms have been tastefully redecorated in a historic style. This restaurant offers a premium selection of Russian-influenced cuisine. Laterna is only available by prior booking and can seat up to 120 people. The maximum number of cocktail guests is 250. Murikka The Murikka Institute is located on a beautiful headland by Lake Näsijärvi, approximately 30 minutes from Tampere City Centre. Murikka is the perfect place for conferences in a completely natural setting, yet comfortably close to the City Centre. Murikka sijaitsee kauniilla niemellä Näsijärven rannalla Tampereen Teiskossa, vain puolen tunnin ajomatkan päässä keskustasta. Murikka The Murikka Institute is a modern and efficient location for productive meetings with all services available under the same roof. The institute houses several meeting and teamwork rooms, as well as 104 hotel rooms. Its auditorium seats 140 people.
