5 Port of Turku Because time matters The Port of Turku is part of the key route for Finland s foreign trade where the services meet the current and future logistics needs of companies. The most important ones are speed and precision of shipments, and to ensure those we continuously collaborate with the other players in the transport chain. Our Port has an excellent location in terms of both imports and exports. Domestic and international transports are joined in the Port into an efficient transport chain with ideal services for fast-paced delivery operations. Imported products are carried quickly from the port to terminals and continue along high-quality road connections to all parts of the country. As a result, products arriving on morning ships can be delivered in Southern Finland during the same day. The involvement of leading logistics players ensures sufficient resources and expertise for load handling as well as sea and road transports. In addition to efficiency, we invest in the management of environmental challenges. Our particular focal areas are reduction of emissions into air, more efficient reception of waste water from vessels, and energy saving. To reduce emissions into air we promote the introduction of LNG in vessel traffic on the basis of a survey conducted together with Neste Jacobs. The use of gas in road traffic is enabled by Gasum s LCNG filling station opened near the port. The waste water reception capacity is increased by two new sewer connections for use by visiting ships. The lamps in the port area will be switched to new LED lights, which will halve the energy consumption of the port lighting. Efficient and environmentally responsible operations strengthen our position as a European core network port and a link for Finnish trade and industry to international markets. 9 Passenger harbour INFORMATION The passenger harbour houses the passenger terminals of Tallink Silja and Viking Line. Right next to the terminals are the railway station for passenger traffic and platforms for long-distance and charter coaches. The Port s parking areas are located just a short walk away from the terminals. Passenger traffic comprises of frequent ferry connections between Finland and Sweden as well as cruise traffic in the Baltic Sea. The routes to Sweden are operated by two shipping companies, Tallink Silja and Viking Line, using modern passenger ferries. There are four daily departures from Turku, two in the morning and two in the evening. 10 Linnanaukko The Linnanaukko area serves the Port s unit cargo transports as well as lo-lo and bulk transports. There are several truck terminals in the port area. Railway tracks lead to the area and there is possibility for the transfer loading of railway carriages. A modern 20-tonne mobile crane is available for lifting. 11 West Harbour The West Harbour has been developed to serve ro-ro transports, imports of vehicles, and the shipping of demanding project loads. The two container terminals and four lightweight halls in the area allow for the handling of cargo whatever the weather. Furthermore, the containers can be loaded and unloaded in the Port s facilities instead of doing it in the customer s premises. 12 Free Zone Company and the Ovako area Turku Free Zone Company is located in the immediate vicinity of the port s ro-ro quays. Nearly 30 hectares of guarded outdoor areas serve the imports of vehicles in particular. The warehouses in the area offer 30,000 m 2 of indoor storage space, part of which is temperature-regulated. There are also various cargo handling services available. The Ovako area is one of the largest and most modern logistics clusters in Finland. The total floor area of the biggest distribution and warehousing terminals in the area is around 75,000 m 2. There are also specialised logistics services for different branches of industry, large truck terminals, and metal industry companies operating in the area. 13 INFORMATION Pansio Harbour Designed for unit cargo, the ro-ro harbour offers excellent premises for project loads besides the spacious facilities for cargo handling. The area has two 5,000 m 2 warehouses right next to the quay and more than 140,000 m 2 of tarmac field space. The large outdoor areas make the Pansio Harbour ideally suited to car exports and imports and the needs of the local shipyards and other heavy industry. 16 The Port of Turku offers the fastest sea route for truck transports to Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia. The sea voyage from Turku to Stockholm takes only eleven hours, and four daily departures allow for flexibility in the planning of transport schedules. In addition, Turku offers a competitive alternative, both in terms of speed and cost, to truck and trailer transports to Germany. Domestic and international transports are combined in the Port of Turku into an efficient transport chain. The arriving cargo can be unloaded quickly in the modern terminals located near the port, from where imported products are forwarded quickly all over the country. Thanks to a central location and good road connections, the products arriving on morning ships can be delivered to the 12 HANDBOOK 2017

17 INFORMATION recipients during the same day. In the Turku, Tampere and Helsinki regions, the delivery can at best be arranged during the same afternoon. The ship schedules in Turku also speed up the delivery of export products. Thanks to the late closing and departure times of evening ferries, products loaded after business hours can still catch the evening ferries and be forwarded to the international industrial customers. Efficient port services also benefit conventional tramping and the port operators. Thanks to a sufficient number of berths, ships need not stay in port very long, and there are no queues for unloading and loading of cargo from trucks to ships. In addition to cost savings, a short stay in the port means significant time saving in sea voyages for cargo carriers, at best a full day compared to many other ports. 13 HANDBOOK 2017

18 Fast and convenient passenger travel Time also matters in passenger traffic. Departing on a ship voyage is easy and convenient in the Port of Turku. Those arriving by car can enjoy good road connections, clear guidance and abundant parking space. Passengers can also come to the Port by long-distance trains and coaches which stop next to the passenger terminals with schedules matching the ship departures. The newest vessels of the shipping companies operating between Turku and Stockholm are planned for fast-paced traffic. The loading and unloading of trucks take place quickly due to well-functioning field arrangements and efficient traffic control. The passenger services also run smoothly in the port. There are enough check-in points, and embarkation and disembarkation is fast. In addition to private passengers, there are special services for truck drivers who can check in on the road already before arriving in the port. In addition to scheduled routes, the Port of Turku provides comprehensive services to cruise companies operating on the Baltic Sea. There are enough berths, vessels can connect to fixed waste water collection points, and security is ensured with 24-hour camera surveillance. Turku offers cruise liner passengers and crews a free shuttle bus service between the port and city-centre, which allows for visiting the key sights in the city during one day. 14 HANDBOOK 2017

20 Car imports Car sales increased significantly in Finland in At the same time the imports of new cars through the Port of Turku have picked up. The growth has been particularly strong in the imports of commercial vehicles, such as vans and trailer trucks. Of car manufacturers, Ford has concentrated all of its imports to the Port of Turku where the sea transport services meet the needs of car imports in terms of both routes and schedules. The European models are shipped to Turku from Travemünde, while the Fords manufactured in the USA and Canada arrive via Bremerhaven. Cars are shipped from Travemünde once a week, which allows for fast deliveries to dealers. An efficient logistics chain is a key factor in securing the fast delivery of new cars. In Ford s case, the manufacturing plant is responsible for logistics up to the Port of Turku where Oy Ford Ab takes over. Ford s logistics partner in Finland is Assistor Oy Ab which handles all 16 HANDBOOK 2017

21 INFORMATION growing strongly measures related to imports, including advance registration, car tax notifications, quality control and transports. The most visible part of the work takes place in Assistor s servicing and inspection halls. First the cars are filled with fuel suited to the Nordic conditions, and then they are driven through the washing centre to inspection. In addition to the equipment and technical functions, the Assistor staff checks the painted surfaces, windows and mirrors, and installs the accessories and equipment ordered by the customers. More and more often Assistor sends the cars to the dealers so that they are completely ready to be handed over to the customers. In addition to Ford, the other makes imported through the Port of Turku are Opel, Jaguar and Land Rover. Vehicle logistics services to the customers of the Port are also provided by SE Mäkinen whose terminal is located in the free zone area. 17 HANDBOOK 2017

22 The Tall Ships Races celebrate Finland s 100 th anniversary in Turku The world s finest sailing ships will arrive in Turku from July 2017 for the Tall Ships Races. Turku is hosting the event for the fifth time, and the Port of Turku will again be actively involved in the arrangements. In the previous events, at best more than one hundred fine sailing ships from different eras and different parts of the world have graced the banks of the River Aura. Splendid ships and great programme have attracted some half a million visitors to Turku each time, and the maritime event at the heart of the city has offered them a unique experience. In 2017, the Tall Ships Races will be one of the biggest events in the 100th year of Finland s independence, and to mark the occasion the content and setting will be particularly impressive. New features include e.g. a plaza to be built in the area which will allow to place services for the crews and the audience right next to the ships. In addition to an event for the general public, the Tall Ships Races is a sailing competition, the route of which tours nearly all of the Baltic Sea. The 2017 event will start in Halmstad, Sweden with the next destination in Kotka, 18 HANDBOOK 2017

23 INFORMATION Finland. From there the ships arrive in Turku and continue to Klaipeda, Lithuania. The final port of the competition is Szczecin, Poland. The number of sailors in the competition is around 2,500, and according to the rules at least half of them shall be years old. Turku and Kotka offer one hundred Finnish young people the chance to participate in the race to mark Finland s 100th anniversary. The event will climax with the Parade of Sails which offers the audience an opportunity to watch the joint start of the ships towards Airisto. Tall Ships Races in Turku July HANDBOOK 2017

24 In September 2016, Meyer Turku signed a letter of intent with Carnival Corporation on building two new luxury cruise liners at the Turku shipyard. The gross tonnage of the vessels to be built for Carnival Cruise Lines will be over 180,000 tonnes, and they are due for completion in 2020 and The new vessels will be the first cruise liners in the world that use environmentally sound LNG as fuel both at open sea and in port. The LNG will be stored on the vessel and it will be used to produce 100% of the energy needed on board. Thanks to LNG, the ships will not cause soot or sulphur dioxide emissions. The innovative design implemented as collaboration between the client and the shipyard will focus on more efficient use of the ship interiors, providing the passengers with a better cruise experience. As a result of the new, optimised ship design, the passenger capacity of the vessels will be the highest so far, and there will be many new entertainment features. There will be room for 6,600 passengers of which over 5,000 in a lower bed. As a result of the agreement made with Carnival Corporation, Meyer Turku s order portfolio extends to the year The long order portfolio and increasing production volume will enable the positive development of the shipyard and the whole of the Finnish maritime industry cluster in the future, too. Meyer s large investments in the operations of the Turku shipyard are also directed at the future. The already decided investments of 75 million euros include e.g. a new steel warehouse, pre-processing plant for steel and the biggest gantry crane in the Nordic countries, as well as modernisation of the cabin factory of Piikkiö Works. The investments are due for completion before the building of the newly ordered cruise liners will start. 20 HANDBOOK 2017

26 The availability of road fuel gases improved in the Turku region when Gasum opened a filling station next to the port in the autumn. The new filling station enables the use of road fuel gases both in the truck and delivery vehicle traffic to and from the port, as well as passenger traffic in the Turku region. The new station offers LNG for heavy vehicles and CNG road fuel gas for passenger cars. The building of new filling stations is related to Gasum s project which examines the development potential of a new kind of LNG filling station network for heavy vehicles. The EU-supported project serves the TEN-T core network, the implementation of the EU s environmental goals in Finland, and the development of markets for alternative driving power in road traffic. In addition to road traffic, road fuel gases have other areas of application, such as terminal tractors, instead of diesel oil. Apart from inexpensive fuel cost, the choice is supported by environmental reasons, as the emissions from road fuel gases are lower compared with petrol and diesel. 22 HANDBOOK 2017

27 INFORMATION LNG SURVEY SHOWS A GREEN LIGHT FOR THE TERMINAL PROJECT The Port of Turku surveyed together with Neste Jacobs the user potential of LNG in the Turku region. In the survey the readiness of local shipping companies, industrial players and thermal energy plants for the use of LNG was mapped broadly. On the basis of the interviews conducted, the potential total demand is estimated at 44,000 tonnes a year, of which maritime traffic would account for 12,000 tonnes. The results of the survey speak for building a small-scale LNG terminal in the Pansio area. The Port of Turku has thus decided to continue the survey project and refine the results together with the parties that support the use of LNG. 23 HANDBOOK 2017

29 Environmentally sound maritime traffic through co-operation INFORMATION The Port of Turku will increase its capacity to receive waste water from the vessels calling in the port as of summer The building of new fixed sewers is part of the EU-supported ScanMed project which is used for preparing for tighter environmental regulations especially in waste water reception. New vessels must drain their waste water on land by 2019 at the latest, and as of 2021 the rule will concern all passenger vessels sailing on the Baltic Sea. The new sewers will be built in the West Harbour and the Linnanaukko area, which will ensure sufficient capacity for waste water reception from all cargo and passenger vessels calling in Turku. The sewers in the passenger harbour serving traffic between Turku and Stockholm have been used by Viking Line and Tallink Silja for a long time. In addition to waste water reception, the joint project will promote the use of LNG in maritime traffic on the Baltic Sea and the supply of on-shore electricity for vessels. The use of on-shore electricity enables reduction of noise, particle and nitrogen emissions of vessels during their stay in the port. In Turku, the system for on-shore electricity for vessels was completed in the Linnanaukko berth area end of Similar measures will be implemented in all ports participating in the project. Naantali will invest in sewers, Stockholm in sewers and on-shore electricity, and HaminaKotka in the introduction of LNG. An important role is also played by Viking Line which is planning a new vessel concept for the Turku Stockholm route as part of the project. The shipping company aims at developing a safe, efficient and environmentally sound ro-ro passenger vessel concept which responds to the needs of both cargo and passenger traffic, while taking into account the sensitive environment of the Baltic Sea. 25 HANDBOOK 2017

30 The Port of Turku offers fast and high-quality road connections for goods transports all over Finland and all the way to the western parts of Russia. The traffic of heavy vehicles in the Port of Turku is facilitated by smooth traffic arrangements in the port area, and clear signs and guidance for routes to and from the port. Thanks to those and the excellent road connections, the shipments can be forwarded quickly, and time need not be wasted on waiting in the port or queueing in traffic jams. Transferring from the port to the most important trunk roads in Finland is easy along the four-lane Suikkilantie road. It allows heavy vehicles to continue directly e.g. to highway 8, the main route on the west coast where basic improvement is just being completed. The project started in 2014, and since then the stretch between Raisio and Nousiainen has been converted into motorway. The smooth flow and safety of road traffic between Turku and Pori have also been improved with new intersection 26 HANDBOOK 2017

31 INFORMATION arrangements, passing lanes, and by increasing lighting. Suikkilantie also provides heavy vehicles with a fast access to the E18 motorway to Helsinki and highway 9 towards Tampere and Jyväskylä. Both trunk routes of goods transports are accessed via the Turku ring road, thus avoiding the city-centre traffic jams. The E18 motorway is an important part of the European Union s Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor and extends from Turku via Helsinki all the way to St. Petersburg. Highway 9 is part of E-road E63 which forms an important, time-saving export route for the industry based in Finland. 27 HANDBOOK 2017

32 Port of Turku POWER TRUCK SHOW The Port of Turku participated in the Power Truck Show for the fourth time together with Tallink Silja to meet the transport entrepreneurs and drivers who use the Port of Turku. The event is one of the biggest and most diverse transport fair events in Finland and the Nordic countries. PORT OPEN The Port Open event was arranged on Turku Day on 18 September. Visitors could see how a modern port operates by taking part in guided coach tours. 28 HANDBOOK 2017

33 events in 2016 INFORMATION SWAN REGATTA Oras Swan 50th Anniversary Regatta brought over one hundred beauties of the seas from all over the world to Turku in late July. The Port of Turku contributed to the arrangements of the event that marked boat manufacturer Nautor s 50 years of operations. During the regatta, the Swan boats also participated in the Port of Turku Race. NAVIGATE The Port of Turku participated in the NaviGate fair together with eight partners in May. NaviGate is an international event for maritime industry and logistics which allows for meeting maritime experts and professionals. TRANSRUSSIA The Port of Turku took part for the eleventh time in the TransRussia exhibition, held on April in Moscow. We had a joint stand with Tallink Silja and the Port of Helsinki. TransRussia is the leading annual international transport and logistics exhibition in Russia, CIS and the Baltic countries. 29 HANDBOOK 2017
