Professori Sabrina Maniscalco pitää professoriluentonsa päärakennuksen Tauno Nurmela -salissa 15. lokakuuta 2014 klo 18 aiheesta What I have learned in Quantum Wonderland. Teoreettisen fysiikan professorin tehtävä, opetus- ja tutkimusalana moderni kvanttifysiikka, on ollut haettavana fysiikan ja tähtitieteen laitoksella. Matemaattis-luonnontieteellisen tiedekunnan dekaani päätti tehtäväselosteesta 21.12.2012. Hakuajan päättymiseen 11.3.2013 tehtävää olivat hakeneet PhD Andersson Erika, PhD Bombin Hector, PhD Brukner Caslav, PhD Chris tandl Matthias, FT Heikkilä Tero, FT Heinosaari Teiko, PhD Henelius Patrik, FT Hyart Timo, PhD Maniscalco Sabrina, FT Martikainen Jani-Petri, PhD Mazets Igor, PhD Mekhov Igor, FT Möttönen Mikko, FT Ojanen Teemu, PhD Paraoanu Gheorghe Sorin, FT Pellonpää Juha-Pekka, FT Piilo Jyrki, FT Thuneberg Erkki ja PhD Öhberg Patrik. Hakija Patra Manas Kumarin hakemus saapui myöhässä. Dekaani asetti 4.4.2014 valmistelijan tueksi valmisteluryhmän valmistelemaan tehtävään ottamista ja määräsi jäseniksi professori Kurt Gloosin, professori Petriina Paturin (pj.), professori Matti Vuorisen (matematiikan ja tilastotieteen laitos), yliopistotutkija Tom Kuuselan ja tohtorikoulutettava Lauri Toikan. Valmisteluryhmä suoritti 10.4.2013 hakijoista esivalinnan hakemuksissa ja niiden liitteissä esitettyjen tietojen perusteella. Esivalinnan perusteella jatkoon päässeiden 12 hakijan (Andersson, Brukner, Christandl, Heikkilä, Maniscalco, Martikainen, Möttönen, Paraoanu, Pellonpää, Piilo, Thuneberg ja Öhberg) hakemusasiakirjat lähetettiin asiantuntijoiden arvioitaviksi. Dekaani valitsi valmisteluryhmän esityksestä 9.5.2013 asiantuntijoiksi professori Pavel Exnerin (Czech Technical University, Praha, Tšekki), professori Norbert Grewen (Technische Universität Darmstadt, Saksa) ja professori Peter Zollerin (Leopold Franzens Universität Innsbruck, Itävalta). Valmisteluryhmän jäsenillä eikä asiantuntijoilla ollut heidän oman käsityksensä mukaan hallintolain 27 28 :ssä tarkoitettuja esteellisyysperusteita toimia tehtävässään. Hakijoilla ei ollut huomautettavaa valmisteluryhmän jäsenistä eikä asiantuntijoista. Asiantuntijalausunnot olivat käytettävissä 20.8.2013 ja niistä informoitiin hakijoita. Heikkilä peruutti hakemuksensa 13.6.2013, Brukner ja Christandl ennen haastatteluja ja Öhberg ja Andersson ennen rehtorin päätöstä. Neljä kärkihakijaa haastateltiin ja julkiset opetusnäytteet annettiin 13.9.2013. Sabrina Maniscalco antoi hyväksi arvioidun opetusnäytteen aiheesta Quantum Statistics: Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distributions. Matemaattis-luonnotieteellisen tiedekunnan johtokunta esitti 12.12.2013 rehtorille FT Sabrina Maniscalcon ottamista teoreettisen fysiikan professorin tehtävään toistaiseksi 1.6.2014 alkaen. Turun yliopiston rehtori teki päätöksen 20.12.2013, että tehtävään otetaan toistaiseksi FT Sabrina Maniscalco 1.6.2014 lukien.
Professori Maniscalco on antanut elämänvaiheistaan ja toiminnastaan seuraavat tiedot: Sabrina Maniscalco was born on May 6th 1974 in Mazara del Vallo (Italy). She completed her Master studies at the University of Palermo in 1999 and obtained her PhD in 2004 in the same University. She worked as a postdoc at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski (Bulgaria) within the framework of the European Project CAMEL and then joined Prof. Petruccione s group at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban (South Africa) where she worked until September 2005. After a short postdoc position again in Sofia, she joined the group of Prof. Kalle-Antti Suominen at the University of Turku. She continued at the University of Turku obtaining a Senior researcher position at the Turku Collegium of Science and Medicine and also as Academy Researcher until the end of 2010. In 2011 she obtained an associate professor position at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (United Kingdom) where she worked also as Deputy Director of the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences. Since June 2014 she is a Professor at the University of Turku, holding the Chair of Theoretical Physics. Sabrina Maniscalco s research focuses on foundational aspects of Quantum Physics and on Quantum Technologies, such as quantum computation, communication and sensing. She has published over 95 articles in international refereed journals, receiving more than 1900 citations. She has been the Principal Investigator of 5 national and international projects (funded by British and by Finnish national funding agencies and foundations). She is Member of the Management Committee, and Financial Rapporteur, of the EU s COST Action MP 1001 IOTA Ion Trap for Tomorrow s Application and Vice Member of the EU s COST action MP 1006 Fundamental Problems in Quantum Physics. Sabrina Maniscalco has been invited to give over 35 scientific seminars and colloquia in various Universities around the world and to over 40 talks at International conferences. Her research has also attracted the attention of the media. The New Scientists has published in 2007 an article about her discovery on a way to protect quantum computers from noise ( Watchful eye keeps quantum computing on the boil ), she has participated to the BBC World Service radio program The Forum in 2009, and she has been a TED speaker at the TEDUniversity session of TEDGlobal 2009 in Oxford.
Sabrina Maniscalco is very active in public outreach having organised, for example, the International Science Day and the Quantum Circus, within the framework of Turku European Capital of Culture 2011. She has co-produced the award-winning 40-minute documentary Inside the Light about the interaction of light and matter at the quantum level, featuring Nobel Laureate Serge Haroche. Besides Physics, Sabrina likes traveling, hiking, reading, drawing and she is passionate about gelato, savusauna, ashtanga yoga, and her beautiful home island Sicily.
