Uutiset: Vapaat vapaaehtoistyöpaikat elokuun lähtöihin Ensi elokuun lähtöihin on ICYE: n vapaaehtoistyöohjelmassa vapaana paikat Boliviaan, Costa Ricaan, Nepaliin, Nigeriaan ja Uuteen Seelantiin. Boliviassa, Costa Ricassa, Nepalissa ja Nigeriassa on tarjolla pääasiassa sosiaalityötä lasten parissa, mutta myös ihmisoikeustyötä, opetustyötä ja terveysalan työtä. Uudessa Seelannissa vapaaehtoiset viettävät 5 kk maatilalla sekä 5 kk sosiaalityössä lasten parissa. EU:n nuoriso-ohjelman EVS vapaaehtoistyöhön on kiintiöpaikkoja avoinna Italiassa, Liettuassa, Makedoniassa, Ukrainassa ja Venäjällä. Italiassa ja Liettuassa on tarjolla sosiaalityötä vammaistenhoitokodeissa. Ukrainassa vapaaehtoinen tulee työskentelemään kehitysvammaisten toimintakeskuksessa, Venäjällä on tarjolla vapaaehtoistyötä orpokodissa sekä näkövammaisten avustajana. EU:n nuoriso-ohjelman EVS -vapaaehtoistyö toteutetaan EU:n nuoriso-ohjelman tuella ja se on osallistujalle täysin maksuton. Ohjelmaan voivat osallistua 18 25 -vuotiaat. Maailmanvaihdon tervehdys Yleisön pyynnöstä eli NewsLetter-tiimin toivomuksesta vuoden ensimmäisessä tervehdyksessä kerron pitkäaikaisten vapaaehtoistyöohjelmien kentän ke hitty mi ses tä Suomessa ja ICYEn roolista siinä viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana. Maailmanvaihdolla on pitkä kokemus vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden lähettämisestä ja vastaanottamisesta. Viimeisen kymmenen vuoden ajan olen saanut olla siinä mukana. Vapaaehtoistyönkettä Suomessa on laajentunut tuona aikana valtavasti ja myös Maailmanvaihdolla ja kansainvälisellä ICYEllä on siinä omat ansionsa. Tasan kymmenen vuotta sitten Maailmanvaihto (tuolloin Kansainvälinen Kris tilli nen Nuorisovaihto) otti rohkeasti käytännön vastuun viiden järjestön yh tei sen Etelän vapaaehtoisohjelman ETVOn käynnistämisestä. Nykyisin tämän Kepan koordinoiman ohjelman kautta viitisenkymmentä suomalaista lähtee vuosittain vapaaehtoisiksi eteläisen pallonpuoliskon maihin. Noihin samoihin aikoihin ICYEn Euroopan Assosiaatio oli vahvasti mukana vaikuttamassa EU:n nuoriso-ohjelman EVS -vapaaehtoistyön käynnistymiseen. ICYE järjestöt eri EU maissa ovat antaneet panoksensa ohjelman kehittämiseen kansallisella tasolla. Sisällöllisesti EVS vastaakin lähes täysin ICYEn perinteistä pitkäkestoista vapaaehtoistyöohjelmaan. ICYE oli vuona 1995 ensimmäisiä kansain vä li siä järjestöjä, jotka lähettivät ja vastaanottivat EVS- vapaaehtoisia. Tällä hetkellä EU:n tuella toteutettavaan EVS -vapaaehtoistyöhön osallistuu vuosittain n. 60 eri järjestöjen lähettämää suomalaista nuorta ja jonkin verran pienempi mää rä ulkomaisia nuoria saapuu vapaaehtoisiksi Suomeen. Maailmanvaihto on Suomessa suurin ulkomaisia EVS vapaaehtoisia vastaanottava järjestö ja yksi suurim mis ta lähettävistä järjestöistä. Viime vuosina kansainvälisellä ICYEllä on ollut merkittävä rooli EVS va paa ehtois työn laajentumisessa erityisesti Itä-Eurooppaan ja Balkanin maihin. ICYE:n kansainvälinen toimisto on kouluttanut yhteistyökumppaneita näillä alueilla ja koordinoinut EVS hankkeita, joiden kautta Euroopan ICYE järjestöjen lähettämät nuoret ovat voineet osallistua vapaaehtoistyöohjelmiin yli kymmenessä uudessa kohdemaassa ja vastaanottaa nuoria vapaaehtoisia näistä maista. Maailmanvaihto on lähettänyt vapaaehtoisia näiden hankkeiden kautta mm. Liettuaan, Puolaan, Ukrainaan, Venäjälle, Viroon sekä Bosniaan, Kroatiaan ja Makedoniaan. Mutta onneksi Leipzig on lähellä, aina voi hypätä junaan, jos alkaa rokkijalka vipattaa. Yllättävän usein tänne eksyy suomalaisiakin yhtyeitä, joiden keikalla voi sitten muistella koto-suomea, ettei aivan unohdu. Hyvää kevättä kaikille! Tiina, Wurzen, 21.2.05 29

Kuvassa näyttelijä, kääntäjä ja tarinoitsija Harry Rowohltin kanssa 28 Hallo alle Leute! Täällä sitä ollaan oltu jo jonkin aikaa, Wurzenissa, Saksassa. Työskentelen EVS-vapaaehtoisena Netzwerk für Demokratische Kultur nimisessä organisaatiossa, jon-ka päätarkoitus on nimestäkin päätellen edistää demokratiaa ja työskennellä ääri-oikeistoa vastaan. Ja äärioikeistoa täällä entisessä Itä-Saksassa riittää harmiksi asti, vaikka itse olen onneksi selvinnyt ilman yhteenottoja... T een töitä toimiston yhteydessä olevassa mediapajassa, lähinnä dokumentoiden NDK:n järjestämiä tapahtumia, joskus tehden tilaustöitä ja yritän väsätä myös omia projektejani. Juuri nyt kehittelen käsikirjoitusta lyhyeen animaatioon, ja suunnitteilla on myös musiikkivideo paikalliselle punkbändille. Hauskaa on siis toivottavasti luvassa... Kyllä sitä muutakin tulee tehtyä. Kuulun NDK:ssa ns. toimistotiimiin, ja koska toimistomme on auki ma-pe 11 20, olen myös joskus päivystämässä toimiston puolella, vastaamassa puhelimeen jne. Osallistun myös kaikenlaisiin kulttuurija rakennusprojekteihin, kun vain ehdin. Juuri nyt NDK rakentaa vapaaehtoisvoimin Wurzeniin kulttuuritoiminta keskusta yhteen vanhaan taloon, jota kutsutaan D5:ksi. Tänään sinne valettiin betonilattioita, pian jo päästään järjestämään ensimmäisiä tapahtumia Kuulostaa ehkä kiireiseltä, mutta oikeastaan tämä on aika rentoa elämää. Pystyn järjestämään itselleni vapaata, jos sitä tarvitsen, esimerkiksi tavatakseni muita ulkomaalaisia EVS-tyyppejä. Ensimmäisessä seminaarissa Saksassa tutustuin moniin ihaniin ihmisiin, joista joitakin näen nyt kuukausittain aina jossain Saksan kolkassa. Ja yllättäen rahakin on riittänyt ihan hyvin, jopa matkoihin. Pitkäkestoisen vapaaehtoistyön merkitys siihen osallistuville nuorille on e rittäin mer kit tä vä persoonallisen kasvun prosessi, minkä monet tämän lehtisen lukijoista tietävät omasta kokemuksestaan. Kulttuurien välisen ymmärryksen lisääntyminen, maailmankuvan laajentuminen, itsevarmuus ja uravalintojen selkeytyminen ovat Suomeen palanneiden vapaaehtoisten tärkeimpinä kokemia anteja, sunia ja funia ja uusia ystävyyssuhteita tietenkään unohtamatta. Yhä kansainvälistyvimmillä työmarkkinoilla vapaaehtoistyökokemuksella vieraassa kulttuurissa on painoarvoa. Ilolla olemmekin saaneet huomata kansainvälisten vapaaehtoistyöohjelmien arvostuksen ja painoarvon kasvavan. Toni Kammonen tuo omassa kirjoituksessaan hyvin esille nuorisovaihdon merkitystä sillan ra kenta ja na. Näissä tunnelmissa etsimme myös tänä keväänä uusia vapaaehtoisia en si vuo den oh jelmiin. Hello to all of you from the Maailmanvaihto office F or this first Newsletter of the year I was asked to write about development of long term voluntary service programmes in Finland. Maailmanvaihto has a long history of long-term voluntary service programmes. During the past ten years I have had an opportunity to be involved in it. The field of voluntary service programmes has extended a lot during the past 10 years. ICYE and Maailmanvaihto have as well played their role in that process. Quite exactly ten years ago Maailmanvaihto (at that time Kansainvälinen Kristillinen Nuorisovaihto in English International Christian Youth Exchange) took a responsibility to start a Finnish Volunteer Programme, which is run together by five Finnish organisations (NGOs). Nowadays about fifty Finnish volunteers take part via it in voluntary service programmes in Asian, African and Latin American countries. Around the same time ICYE European Association strongly influenced the EU Youth Programmes and is one of those, who can be thanked for existence of EVS. ICYE branches in different EU countries have been involved in development of EVS at national level. EVS is in fact very similar to traditional ICYE long-term programme. In 1995 ICYE was one of the first organisation, who sent and hosted EVS volunteers. Today altogether about 60 young people form Finland participate EVS abroad and almost the same number of foreign volunteers do their EVS here. Maailmanvaihto is the biggest co-ordinating host organisation in Finland and one of the biggest sending organisations. During the past few years the ICYE International has had a meaningful role in extending EVS to the Eastern European and Balkan countries. They have run training seminars and EVS multilateral projects with partners in those countries. Participation in a long-term voluntary service programme is a very important process of personal growth for most of the participants, which many of the readers of this newsletter know from their own experience. We have been very happy to see that long-term voluntary service programmes are widely appreciated these days. Wishing you all a very enjoyable spring days! I have already learnt a lot about this part of world. Before coming here my image of Ukraine was based very much on my experiences and images of Russia. Maybe Chernobyl, Odessa, Crimea, Black Sea, the Cossacks, Dynamo Kiev and country of black soil, the bread basket of Soviet Union were special things that came to my mind when thinking about Ukraine (at least before talking to Ivanna, the Ukrainian EVS in Lehtimaki, and other people with real Ukrainian contacts). Now after the election process, when Western media s attention was turned to Ukraine for some months, people in Finland maybe know something more. At least many might have now different kind of images of Ukraine in their heads, with people demonstrating and waving orange flags. My image of Ukraine is now very Kyiv-based. I live here with Ukrainian girl and father in a block of flats in one of the all-the-same-looking grey suburbs, and travel from home to work with millions of other people every morning, trying not to breathe deep the bad air. I need to spend every day for public transport at least 3 hours, and the metros and minibuses are often so full that you cannot even move you hands to read a book. If my project would have been in Ukrainian countryside village without running water, great choice of shops and cultural activities, my image of Ukraine would be naturally very different. This metropolitan is now my home, and will still be for almost next three months. And even though I know I would not like to live all my life in such a big and chaotic city, already now I get a feeling of homesickness when I leave out of Kyiv. The beginning of my stay here was not the easiest, starting from my train trip through Russia. After all the difficulties in Russia, I almost cried with happiness, when the Ukrainian border police wished me welcome to Ukraine with his broken English. I spent my first night sleeping and not sleeping in the main station of Kyiv, dead tired, with too much luggage. And naturally I was quite disappointed when I heard about the problems with the project even before I could go there. But now I feel that things are getting better every day. I have adapted to live normal life, still full of little, happy or somehow touching surprises around the corners. Good luck for all of you! Schastlivo, like we say over here. 26 At the same time the famous second round of presidential elections was going on, and the orange revolution was starting up. People started to build up the tent village on the main street, just a few blocks from the office of Alternative- V. In this kind of atmosphere my difficulties with the project seemed minor. I really had a chance to see a special period of Ukrainian history. Nobody knew what was going to happen, but people were simply just fed up with the powers that had been leading the country during its short independence. Despite few worrying news or rumors the atmosphere in Kyiv was all the time very positive and peaceful. It was always interesting to pass the main street with tents and activists. After 23rd January, the inauguration of Yuschenko as the new president, there was a big party with the most popular Ukrainian bands and massive fireworks on the Independence Square, and the last tents were finally taken down. Now the main street looks again quite empty and dull, just with cars rushing there. The life has gotten back to normal. Also my life has been back to normal after Christmas and New Year holidays in Czech and Slovakia. Alternative-V found me a project here in Kyiv, called Dzherela (wells or springs). Dzherela is NGO working with mentally disabled young people, children and their families. The situation of disabled people is still very difficult here, as in many ex- Soviet countries. The human rights of physically and mentally disabled are often seriously violated. When Dzherela was founded 10 years ago by some active mothers of disabled children, it was one of the first NGOs working in this field, and tries through its own practices as well as through different kind of research, development and training projects to change things in Ukraine. I am spending my days trying to help in the day center, where different kind of lessons and workshops are organized for the young people. In the beginning I felt myself quite useless and stupid, with bad Russian and no Ukrainian skills. But little by little things are getting better. Now I just spend time with the people, help in the kitchen, dance and sing, make origami, teach Finnish whatever needed and what comes to mind. Even though the project is now very different from what I chose, I know that I will learn many things, as much as possible. And maybe the people of Dzherela will remember for some time a strange Finnish girl, who wanted to spend time there and help them. Moi kaikkille! Maybe you don t remember me, anyway, I m Meloni Luca. I participated for one year in the ICYE project in Finland, at the beginning in Suonenjoki (Vanhamäen Toimintakeskus) and then in Helsinki (Lyhty ry) in the 2001/2002. The time is going on very fast, it has been already two years after my voluntary service, but I very often think about my good experience in Finland, the friends and the nice people (from everywhere in the world and especially Finnish!) that I met, and by this I really always keep a good memory. So! like that I m writing and I m sending my best regards to everybody in ICYE, for who already know me, but also to everyone that doesn t know me as well as the new volunteer workers: I give my best wishes for a very good voluntary service. Even if sometime I had have bad moments during my EVS, you know! new language, problem about the project, adaptation to the new country, etc.etc., I m sure that if there was just one possibility, I ll make again the same experience a second time! A Crazy Taiwan Girl in Finland Moi! It s me again, Chiao-yin Hello everyone, Mita kuuluu?? Did you have good time in your own life? I hope you are! Now I m here in Finland already 6 months, the time lapse very quickly. In the twinkling of an eye, I only have 6 months left and then I will go back to my real life. But I get so many good and new experiences! Ex; like had a Finnish Christmas, wedding, Matti s graduate party, ice hole swimming and moose hunting.. All most all different kind of Finnish s celebrated. In June, my host sister, Anni, she will has her confirmation party how lucky I am!!!(thanks god!!) I m happy I can join that many different kind of Finnish s celebration. Greetings from snowy but springy Kyiv Ukraine! arrived to this big, fascinating city full of history and I politics over three months ago without knowing that I would still be here today. I had planned indeed to stay for half a year in this country, but not exactly in Kyiv. After all the trainings and a beautiful summer in Finland I left here without any bigger expectations. But I left here also as ready as possible to face my new Ukrainian life and my voluntary work project in a children s home for children with cerebral palsy, which was supposed to be located in Dnipropetrovsk, a big Russian-speaking city somewhere south-east of Ukraine, known at least for its mining industry and mafia. But many unexpected things happen over here, about some of which you also have heard a lot in Finland during the last months. After few weeks of intensive Russian lessons and interesting medical check-ups needed for people who work with children, we found out that the new director of my project is not anymore very cooperative with my hosting organization Alternative-V. Just some weeks before leaving from Finland I had been in touch with my contact person in the project, and they were very happy to hear from me. But for some mystical reason my contact person had suddenly left the children s home and everything had changed. 8 25

Olen elossa! Edessäni on avoin maantie, vieressäni nuokkuu uninen taiwanilaispoika reppuni tyynynään, onpahan mitä vanhana muistella. Välillä tuntuu kuin minut olisi puskettu lihamyllyn läpi, sekoitettu ja muovattu uudelleen. Olen erilainen kuin ennen, en parempi tai huonompi, vain erilainen. Minulla on enemmän annettavaa, enemmän muisteltavaa. Nämä lumihuippuiset vuoretko minut muuttivat? Vai kaikki nämä uudet ystävät? En tiedä. Mutta olen onnellinen. On hyvä olla. Välillä väsymys valtaa mielen ja ruumiin. Maisemat vaih tu vat, aika lentää ja väsyttää. Mutta juuri silloin, kun olen valmis lyömään autonrasvaiset hanskani tiskiin, kuulen hurmaantuneen huudon: Oh my god! Katsahdan ylös siniselle taivaalle ja näen yläpuolellani liitävän nuoren miehen laskuvarjoineen, adrenaliinia pursuten. Elämä on seikkailua! Ei, en ehdi nyt luo vut taa. On liian kiire nauttia. 12.1.2005, Te Anau, Uusi-Seelanti, Hanna Ojala For me, the most impressiveness thing, that is I went to moose hunting with my host father!!! Actually, that day was family day, that s why I can go with him (also host mother & Anni) and experience that how to hunt the moose, work in the forest and saw the working moose!!! (Still alive) it s it was just working in the front of me!! (About 200m) it s a male, and it just slowly work away~ I never saw that before! And of course the die one, my host father shoots it. So I also saw how they make the stomach of, how to make the hide of something like that. I think I would never saw this in Taiwan, very very good experience for me. Now I have very good life in Kajaani. The weather is nice (full of snow), the family is very nice to me, the school, the teacher I met, they are all very nice! And also the friends, I know so many new friends in the school; but without boys I don t know why, because they are too shy to talk to me? or their afraid to talk to me? (Am I dreadful?) Should I go in front of them and say hei! I m Chiao! Hello, how are you? Can you talk with me?! (Sound stupid...) just want to be a friend is that difficult? I love Kajaani, it s a beautiful city even it s not so big, but the place, people they are so lovely, the lifestyle is easy, you don t have to go to school very early in the morning, you don t have work very long time, you can have your own relaxed time and have your own hobby! Like my host sister: Anni, every week she has ridding lesson and saxophone lesson. I m dream I would like to have these kind of life also can go to talent and skill lessons learn more what I interesting, But not in Taiwan. I have too busy on my homework, I don t have time. Terve kaikille!!! We are Ornella and Verónica, two EVS volunteers from Italy and Spain. Our projects are: a home family for children in Vilppula ( near Tampere) and a Spanish kindergarten in Helsinki. We arrived in February 2004 and probably while you are reading this article we have already come back to our countries. Before going away, we would like to leave a memory of our experience in Finland The most interesting things for us is the possibility to travel and to get to know different cultures, places, people That s why we chose Finland like our destination. But during all this year we got to know the big differences all around Finland so we decided to take advantage of the chance to make the long-distance trip, in order to visit another project: We went to Rovaniemi and visited the Rudolf Steiner School in the beginning of October. He showed us the school and his tasks there. We had never seen this kind of school and for us it was difficult to understand such a different education system. The aim of the teaching is to create and develop mental skills by using games, handworks, music, eurytmia (a kind of exercise with body language, rhythm, music ) Also we noticed the importance of the language: kids can study English, Finnish, Swedish, German We think it s a good way to learn a lot of things, but, in our opinion, there is not enough time to study normal subjects (Maths, history ) What s your address? Umm, well, actually I don t have one at the moment. I m living in the car. Huh huh! Tämä pieni minun ja valokuvaliikkeen myyjän välillä käyty keskustelu havahdutti minut. On matkustuskuukausi. 22 SATURDAY 15.1. After the breakfast and energizer there was a lessons of the lovely Finnish language. I was very surprised how much they had learned Finnish in such a short period! For example Krishna from Nepal spoke very fluently! And it was so nice to hear some words and sentences they have heard from the commercials etc. The most funny one for me was when Daniel from Bolivia mentioned: Kylläpä kesti. Later the volunteers had a possibility to be creative with drama: The meaning was to solve different kind of problems you easily meet in your voluntary career, for example communication, by the way of theatre. The evening was the Party time. And of course we had to have a sauna and barbecue soijanakkeja ja makkaraa on the campfire... SUNDAY 16.1. Morning early ( at least it feels Very Early after the partynight... Wonder Why...? ) we cleaned up all the house. That was our energizer-axon at the same time. Then we spoke about the good and the bad points of Finland and played the last games. After the lunch the camp was over. And so, what were the good points of Finland? At least the Social security, Public health service, Safetyness, Nature, Snow and the Silence, now I remember and try to keep that on my mind, when it s this long, strange, lonely, dark period between Winter and Spring... - Elina Salokangas - We spent five days in Rovaniemi and we enjoyed with Joran. Of course!!! We have gone to Santa Claus Village and we crossed the Arctic Circle s line. Both obligatory tourist places, but unfortunately we didn t find snow and the final effect was no so great! Then, we left Rovaniemi and started a long travel to discover the real Lapland!! We went to Kilpisjärvi, the highest point of Finland, where we found the first snow and the first ice. We felt happiness to see the beauty of the nature; and we breath the purest air of Europe!!! After two days we decided to go away because in that season there was nothing to do and we needed to be active. We have met a lot of nice people, very, very friendly!! We think that in Lapland people is more open and try show interest in knowing you. During this year we have missed human contact and the possibilities to show the feelings, but in that trip we met very different people. Then we went to Norway for 2 days. There we noticed the different landscape, wonderful anyway!!! After that we came back to Rovaniemi and spent the last night with Joran. We enjoyed our trip, also because we found some funny disadventures we prefer no to speak about that, but can just imagine what can happen in a 10 days trip in Lapland!!! Working with mentally disabled children and young people in Kauhava Where did you fl y with this plane?, Into the sky, so this is Swiss food... and that you every day?, What does it mean to be poor? When you work with disabled people you get the most interesting questions and most surprising answers. work in Kauhava, a funny village in Etelä-Pohjanmaa where it s I all about knives, the landscape is just wood and fields and in the sky you see always military airplanes. There are my 2 working projects. FRIDAY 14.1....Wake Up & Make-Up!...at least the last ones woke up when we walked to the bus... at eleven o clock we had to be in the Finnish National Museum in Helsinki. We had our own guide, who explained for us about that old stuff over there. It was vey nice and rewarding, cause at least I had Never(?) heard or seen even the half of this stuff, even if I am Finnish! Ok, History is not my strongest area anyway... I could maybe make it but not to study... :) After the lunch we spoke about the diaries of the volunteers. It was a task they got in the last camp, I guess... They had been chosen some topics, like educational system, relationship with the neighbours, girls and their make up etc., which they were comparing now to their own countries. In the evening the most courageous people jumped in the hole in the ice without the sauna or anything!!! At least they cooled down and became members of the ICYE Ice-Breakers Association. To prove this madness they got a diploma! In the mornings I work at Pihlajapuistokoulu. It s a small school for mentally disabled children between 6 and 17 years. The kids like to go to school very much. Especially learning to read is very important to them. They are very active and it isn t really a quiet class J. When guests visit the school the kids always introduce me like it s Sina, and she can t speak Finnish. But they often teach me. I have to sit on their tables and it is funny to see how they imitate their real teacher to teach me for example the months in Finnish. What impressed me a lot is their honesty. While for normal people it is very easy to lie about small things, for them it is really difficult to lie. For example when we play: oh you are boring I don t want play with you anymore. Or I was at the lunch with one boy and I said SYÖ maitoa and he put his fork into the milk and just said sinä olet niin tyhmä. There is also a class with children that can t talk. They know sign language and I hope I will learn more of the signs and be able to communicate with them. 12 21

About the mid-year evaluation camp I guess every year in every country they organize this kind of midyear-evaluation camp for the ICYE ( International Cultural Youth Exchange ) volunteers. So do we Here on the edge of the World, in Finland. The camp was situated in Vuosaari in Helsinki (Meriharjun kurssikeskus ) and the dates were 13. 16.1. 2005. So we were gathered together with a slightly more than twenty volunteers for four days and three nights. From Thursday to Sunday. Because there was also the faces of the KitchenTeam, ProgrammeTeam and a couple of visiting stars, it means there were quite an international group of young people from the East, West, South and North under the same roof. One Love One Heart as Bob Marley would say... With the older children at the school I train with them the independent life. The school owns flat and I stay overnight with them sometimes there and they learn how to live on their own. It s their goal - to have an own flat one day. On the weekdays in these flats live already very independent young disabled adults around 20 to 25 years. This is my second working place: Tuettu Työllistyminen ry. The young people live in the flats, go to work and have a free time program. It belongs all together. Their work is very important to them. They don t work at special places for disabled people but in the privat market for example clean at a school or work in a bakery. When we spend time at their flats we always have a lot to talk about. They are really interested in other countries and languages and want to know a lot. Sometimes that s a little difficult because of my Finnish and once I agreed to the questions if there are volcanos in Switzerland (which is not true of course) because I didn t really understand the question. They also started to get interested in other languages. One girl often gets language courses from the library. So in the evenings we already studied together some Thai, Hebrew and Japanese. I also help them with cooking, but I think they are better than I am. 20 THURSDAY 13.1. We met each other at one o clock at the railwaystation where we took a subway to Vuosaari. Then by bus and the rest of the way we had to walk to get to Meriharju. We settled down a bit, had a coffee and started to get know each other. There are always some new and old faces - this time at least for Ágústa who just arrived in from Island a couple of days before - so this kind of introducing games and plays were a good way to start the camp....while we had an evaluation and discussion, Sinikka put up her clinic upstairs and started individual reception for every volunteer. There everybody had a possibility to speak during the camp, one by one, about their situation, problems and the worries. In the evening we were planned to have a sauna, but ( mister ) nobody put it on. Other free time activities are swimming and sauna or reparing old furniture. Once in the week we also play floor ball and I m really terrible and they are always happy when I am in the goal because Sina is in the goal! Now we will make a goal! Working with disabled wasn t my first wish for my ICYE year, but now I am so glad with it and couldn t think of a better work for me. The work gives you so much back and it is very good to spend so much time with so special, funny and honest people that always truly show how they feel. It will be really difficult to leave Kauhava and my students and young people. Sina Läubli 13

INTIA, KAKSIPIIPPUINEN JUTTU Takana on puoli vuotta vapaaehtoistyötä Intiassa. Se tarkoittaa, etten enää pelästy huoneessani vierailevia hiiriä tai torakoita, kuuma kosteus ei vie enää jalkoja alta ja sarin päälle pukeminen onnistuu parissa minuutissa. Maavalintani oli hetken mielijohde; en koskaan ole ollut sen kummemmin Intia friikki. Ennakko odotuksissa tyhjä mieli lienee ollut etu, sillä Intia yllättää joka tapauksessa. Itse maassa eläminen ei oikein vastaa Suomen Intian basaareissa kiertelyä. Asun Putturin pienessä kaupungissa kristityn papin taloudessa yhdessä toisen vapaaehtoisen kanssa. Työnkuvani muodostuu palasista: osaksi opetan kou lussa, osaksi toimin pianon opettajana (Suomessa saamaani koulutusta vaon hyödyntää koululta löy ty ne i den CASIOurkujen ansiosta.). Sunnuntait ku lu vat kanttorin töissä ja n. kerran viikossa vierailen läheisessä orpokodissa. Alussa vaikeutena oli juuri selkeän työnkuvan puut tu minen ja intialaisten ohjeiden epämääräisyys. Useimmiten on käynyt niin, että juuri alkaessani tuntea itseni hyö dyttö mäk si ja turhautuneeksi, jostakin ilmestyy kiinnostavaa tehtävää. Mitä sitten kunnioitus käytännössä tarkoittaa? Parhaiten voin ehkä sel vit tää ajatuksiani tästä esimerkin avulla. Minulla on yksi juutalainen ystävä, joka on käynyt vapaaehtoisena Israelin armeijan. Minä taas kan na tan erittäin vahvasti palestiinalaisten oikeuksia. Meidän ys tä vyyteem me tämä ei kuitenkaan vaikuta, sillä me ymmärrämme toistemme ajatuksia ja motiiveita. Olemme jopa kerran väitelleet asiasta ja tulleet siihen johtopäätökseen, että loppujen lopuksi me kummatkin perustelemme omaa kantaamme enemmän tunteilla kuin loogisilla argumenteilla. Ja me olemme valmiita hyväksymään toistemme erilaiset mielipiteet ilman, että se jotenkin vähentäisi toisen arvoa. Olen toimiessani uskontojen piirissä myös todennut, että mitä varmem pia ihmiset ovat omista mielipiteistään, niin sitä helpompaa heidän on kohdata itselleen vieraita näkemyksiä. Saarnatessaan muille sitä yleensä saarnaa samalla myös itselleen ja koittaa näin vahvistaa omia ajatuksiaan. Sillä jos ihminen on omista mielipiteistään täysin varma, niin miksi hän silloin tuntisi oloaan uhatuksi, vaikka ympärillä olevat ihmiset näkisivät asiat eri tavalla? Vaatii hyvää itsetuntoa kantaa omaa totuuttansa ilman, että sitä on jatkuvasti julistettava muille. Miten sitten pitäisi suhtautua sellaisiin ihmisiin, jotka eivät ole valmii ta tähän kunnioitukseen? Olen kohdannut paljon tällaisia ihmisiä elämäni aikana ja yleensä olen aina pyrkinyt kuuntelemaan heitä sekä oikeasti hahmottamaan heidän tapaansa ajatella. Sujuvaan vuo ro vai ku tuk seen vaaditaan kuitenkin kahdensuuntaista liikettä ja hyvää itsetuntoa osoittaa myös se, että ihminen ei täysin hautaa o mi a mielipiteitänsä miellyttääkseen toista. Joskus pitää vain sanoa, että minä ajattelen tästä asiasta eri tavalla ja tarvittaessa vetäytyä ristiriitoja aiheuttavasta tilanteesta. Rakentavan vuorovaikutuksen perusteet ovat siis kunnioitus sekä itse ään että toista kohtaan. Voin ilokseni todeta, että ainakin näkemäni perusteella nämä periaatteet toimivat Maailmanvaihdossa hyvin. Uskonto erottaja vai yhdistäjä? 18 Vanhan kansanviisauden mukaan on olemassa kaksi aihetta, joista ei ikinä pitäisi keskustella puolituttujen kanssa. Toinen on politiikka ja toinen uskonto. Koska kansanviisauksien pohjalla on yleensä todellisia syitä, niin mikä sitten tekee näistä kahdesta asiasta niin tulenarkoja? Vastauksen tähän kysymykseen löytää katsomalla te le vi siouuti sia. Kaikkialla maailmassa uskonnot näyt tä vät erottavan ihmisiä eri leireihin. Ja jos jollain tietyillä uskonnoilla ei ole täl lä hetkellä keskenään mitään riitaa, niin aina voi kääntyä his to ri an puoleen löytääkseen niitä. Kaikilla uskonnoilla on o mat marttyy rin sa. Mutta niin on myös eri poliittisilla suuntauksilla sekä kansalaisuuksilla. Ja jos historia sekä laajemmat kansainväliset tapahtumat olisivat ainoita tekijöitä, jotka määrittäisivät yksilön suh tau tu mis ta toiseen ihmiseen, niin emmehän me suomalaiset silloin voisi olla tekemisissä yhdenkään ruotsalaisen, sak sa laisen tai venäläisen kanssa. On kuitenkin mielenkiintoista, että minulle ei tule mie lee ni yh tään ai no ata kertaa, kun minä tai joku minun ystäväni olisi riitautunut toisen henkilön kanssa uskonnollisista tai poliittisista syistä. Ja tälläkin hetkellä minulla on ystävinä juutalaisia, mormo ne ja, islaminuskoisia, agnostikkoja, kom mu nis te ja sekä ka pita lis te a. Minä jopa äänestän täysin eri puoluetta kuin tyt tö ys tävä ni. Kysymys on pohjimmiltaan kunnioituksesta. Putturissa, jossa kaupungille ei ole asiaa muuten kuin salwar kameez asuun tai sariin pukeutuneena, tuskin uneksitaankaan Mumbain yökerhoista. Kuukauden matkusteluajan jälkeen en tiennyt itkeäkö vai nauraa: niin paljon u peaa tuli nähtyä mutta myös niin usein tuli jouduttua lähentelyn, seuraamisen tai vastaavan uhriksi. Tässä maassa oppii ymmärtämään, mitä todella tarkoittaa järjes tet ty avioliitto tai epätasa-arvo kastin tai miehen ja naisen välillä. Vanhanaikaisuuksia ylläpitäviä intialaisia ei silti voi olla ihailematta nähdessään, millaisella antaumuksella he uhraavat tunteja tanssiin, lauluun, ruuanlaittoon tai silkkaan istuskeluun. 25:stä näkemästäni maasta Intia on ehdottomasti erikoisin. Vapaaehtoistyön päättyessä olen valmis palaamaan Intiaan nähdäkseni uudestaan edes yhden opettamani lapsen loistavat, suklaanväriset silmät. Leena Koivisto 15

REMEMBER ASIA It has only been over a month when Tsunami destroyed many areas in Asia and killed nearly 300 000 people. Millions lost their homes or and approximately 150 000 children were orphaned. The numbers are nearly too massive to understand. While we are moving ahead, there are lots of people who are trying to help the victims. And most of all there are people who are trying to continue their lives after losing home and loved ones. We have seen lots of news and reports from the area that suffered from the Tsunami. All the stories are touching, some had more luck than others. Media have been concentrating to the places where tourist had their holidays. Of course countries are first worried about their own, but we should also remember the locals who suffered as much as foreigners. Some even more. VCDS (Village Community Development Society) helps active in areas that suffered from Tsunami. They have helped mostly with rebuilding. They ve concentrated on fishermen villages on the coast. VCDS is organisation that works with Dalits, formerly known as untouchables. They work mainly with women and children. So there is a lot of work in `normal conditions too. FHF (Florence Home Foundation) is in Cuddalore. In FHF `s house lives 20 young children who are orphans. They have to evacuee the house because the surrounding area was completely destroyed. They stayed away for few weeks and are now back in Cuddalore. Everyone is helping some way but FHF doesn` t do organised or financed volunteering cause it is so small organisation. Etvo s two volunteers are also now in the area working with their projects. Circumstances are not the same that they used to, but volunteers went to India January as planned. They are helping any way they can. NVCYE (Nepal Volunteers and Cultural Youth Exchange) have taken part in rescue relief. Volunteers went from Nepal to Sri Lanka to help and are now back home. Volunteers cleaned in village. They also distributed food, drinking water and medicines etc. to the refugee camps. Volunteers were happy that they got to help people there. In India area called Tamil Nadu suffered severely from Tsunami. More than 140 000 were displaced from their homes. The death toll is nearly 8000. After immediate measures temporary dwellings were built, where person can live six to nine months while rebuilding. India is trying to construct safe houses little further from the sea. People are now more afraid to live by the shore and there have been thoughts that the beach culture will never be the same. Some people who live far away from sea but Tsunami damaged their houses feel little neglected because they have to wait for help. Things that are `more urgent goes ahead. ICYE`s co-operative organisations have been in the middle of the chaos. Etvo`s (Finish Volunteer Programme) two partners work in South India catastrophe area. The help from the organisations, volunteers and ordinary people have been crucial from the start. Catastrophe was so surprising that first were needed any help there was available. International help, money raising and for example Asia concerts shows the global concern. Still is important to have lots of trained professionals who know exactly what they re doing. To avoid more confusion or stress, people have to listen professionals advice. Aim is to make things for better not for worse. The task is difficult also mentally for everyone involved. It takes time to survive from the experience. We should try to help in some way that is possible the people who are near or far away. At least have hope in our thoughts.
