SUSTAINABLE REFURBISHMENT OF EXTERIOR WALLS AND BUILDING FACADES - SUSREF http://cic.vtt.fi/susref/ FP 7 / Environment (including Climate Change) / Collaborative project, Small or medium scale focused research project / 226858 Developed concepts for refurbishment of exterior walls Developed a systematic method with help of which the concepts were assessed Assessed the significance of refurbishment in terms of GHG, Energy and Costs Developed recommendations for policy makers, standardisation and building industry
Deliverables are available on SUSREF web page
A systematic method for the assessment of refurbishment concepts Enables comparisons of different refurbishment concepts iterating and optimizing between alternative solutions setting targets for the refurbishment exterior walls avoidance of risks and consideration of the context of the whole building and neighbouring environment. 10 Recommendations for standardisation Euro codes are European-wide standardized design guidelines and rules for building industry. Euro codes provide uniform design criteria, harmonize different national guidelines and also offer a uniform basis for development. At present there are 10 Euro codes containing guidelines and rules for structural design and calculations. SUSREF project recommends the development of a new Euro code. A new code should give guidelines for the design of refurbishment of exterior walls. The systematic approach for the assessment of refurbishment concepts could be made use of in the development of the design guidelines.
The proposal for the topics is as follows: diagnostics performance criteria (systematic approach according to SUSREF) use of different materials assessment and calculation methods (as for example described in SUSREF) guidelines for good construction practice execution of work service life design.
CEN TC 350, ISO TC 59, SC 17 and 14 CEN TC 350 Recommendation is to clarify the terms, functional unit and building performance, in contexts of the use of products and components which are meant for building renovation use. These standards are applicable for all building materials and components including renovation materials. ISO TC 59 SC 14 The recommendation is to prepare new service life standard which takes into account the condition of existing building and gives exact instructions for the assessment of remaining service life for building refurbishment.
Recommendations for policy makers In addition to the coming legislation and regulations that will be based on the recast energy performance directive, there is also a need to develop other instruments than control and regulatory instruments. Especially fiscal instruments and incentives and informative support will be needed in order to to achieve common willingness among public to make efforts for significantly improved quality and energy performance of exterior walls of buildings to avoid risks in the connection of building renovations to economically facilitate choices that are excellent from the view point of technical and long-term sustainability reasons.
Recommendations development and adoption of methods of consultation steering reinforcement of informative support and dissemination of information about sustainable refurbishment concepts on national levels development of effective incentives for sustainable refurbishment of exterior walls promotion of training for improved expertise in design and construction of sustainable refurbishment concepts continuous support for demonstration citizen engagement
