Erityisesti käynnistysvaiheessa 1980-luvun alussa Ruuskanen sai tukea Larry McLerranilta, josta tuli Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian ulkomainen jäsen vuonna 2000. Kehitettiin hydrodynaamisia ohjelmia systeemin laajenemista kuvaamaan, oletettiin erilaisia alkulämpötiloja, laskettiin numeerisesti kuinka nopeasti plasma virtaa ja laskettiin kuinka paljon plasma säteilee fotoneja ja elektroni-positronipareja. Tulokset kommunikoitiin kokeellisille ryhmille, jotka ottivat ne huomioon kokeittensa suunnittelussa ja erityisesti Brookhavenin laboratorion RHIC:n tulosten analysoinnissa 2000-luvun alusta ja CERNin LHC:n tulosten analysoinnissa 2010-luvun alusta. On hienoa todeta, että Ruuskanen ehti nähdä kuinka kokeet oleellisesti todensivat hänen fenomenologiset ideansa. Tämä nähtiin jo RHIC:n tuloksista, mutta erityisen vakuuttavasti aivan tuoreista LHC:n tuloksista. Törmäyksessä muodostuvaa systeemiä kuvaa hätkähdyttävällä tarkkuudella relativistinen hydrodynamiikka. Suorastaan dramaattista on se, että hiukkasfysiikan kaikkein matemaattisimman haaran, säieteorian, ainoa todennettu ennuste on tämän aineen viskositeetti. Vesa Ruuskanen on saanut tieteellisistä ansioistaan useita huomionosoituksia.
Keijo Kajantie Vesa Ruuskanen In memoriam Vesa Ruuskanen, member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and emeritus professor of theoretical physics at the University of Jyväskylä, died at his home on 28 December 2011 at the age of 71 years. He was born in Rantasalmi in southeastern Finland and attended high school in Savonlinna. He started his physics studies at the University of Helsinki in 1959 and graduated early in 1964. After military service he attended graduate school at Iowa State University in Ames, USA, and after returning to Finland defended his PhD thesis at the University of Helsinki at the end of 1970. As a new PhD he spent a year at CERN, Geneva even though Finland was not yet a member of CERN but returned in 1972 to Jyväskylä in Finland, where he had obtained a lectureship in theoretical physics. He was soon promoted to associate professor, in 1974, and, after Pertti Lipas retired, gained a full professorship in 1996. He retired from this position at the end of 2006. In 1986-87 he was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Vesa Ruuskanen was a theoretical particle physicist, and more specifically a phenomenologist, working at the interface between theoretical and experimental physics as he attempted to explain how empirical observations are to be interpreted. Thus he never lost contact with the real world. Experiments in particle physics are carried out in only a very few large laboratories around the world, and the name Ruuskanen was soon known in all of these. Ruuskanen s speciality was quantum chromodynamics, QCD, the theory of interactions between quarks and gluons. When he started his research in the early sixties this theory was not known; there existed only a large number of strongly interacting particles, nuclei, protons, neutrons, pions, etc. In his thesis, written under the guidance of the Finnish-American physicist Ken Lassila, he studied the decay probabilities of these particles, whether their decays might follow principles other than the usu- 150 Academia Scientiarum Fennica 2011
al exponential decay laws. He also studied their interactions phenomenologically by presenting a hypothetical model and comparing it with experimental observations. QCD originated in 1973, and it was soon obvious that quark confinement made the theory so complicated that relating it to experimental findings required the development of new methods. During the seventies Ruuskanen studied what happens when two protons are caused to collide at very high energy. His career took off with added force when he brought a new element into picture from the early eighties onwards, the size of the system. What happens when two very large nuclei collide at very high energy? His hypothesis was the formation of quark-gluon plasma, which would decay according to the laws of relativistic hydrodynamics. Plasma means here that one is dealing with a hot, dense ball of fire, relativistic that all the velocities are close to that of light, and hydro that one really has a piece of collectively behaving matter. How can one experimentally measure the properties of this matter? With the study of this hypothesis as his goal, Ruuskanen built up a research group in Jyväskylä which even today is one of the leading ones in this field in the world. Especially at the early stages, much assistance and guidance was given by Larry MacLerran, who was elected a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2000. Ruuskanen with his group wrote hydrodynamic codes to describe the expansion of the system, assumed different initial temperatures, computed numerically how rapidly the plasma flows and computed the extent to which the plasma radiated photons or electron-positron pairs. The results were communicated to experimental groups, who took note of them in the planning of their experiments and in the analysis of measurements, particularly those at RHIC in Brookhaven from around 2000 onwards and those in LHC at CERN after 2010. It is gratifying to note that Ruuskanen lived to see how his phenomenological ideas were basically verified by the experiments that were performed. This had already been observed at RHIC, but was established still more convincingly at LHC. It is striking how well relativistic hydrodynamics describes the system formed in the collision of nuclei. It is also quite remarkable that the only empirically verified prediction of the most mathematical branch of particle physics, string theory, is the viscosity of this expanding matter. Vesa Ruuskanen s scientific merits were recognized in many different ways. He became a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 1994 and was awarded the Theodor Homén prize by the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters in 2004. Beyond his work as an active researcher, he contributed a lot to administration and teaching. He was department chairman in Jyväskylä, director of the Research Institute of Theoretical Physics in Helsinki at a turbulent time in the nineties, a member of the board of Nordita in Copenhagen, chairman of the Finnish Physical Society and a member of the Finnish Committee for the Natural Sciences. Ruuskanen was particularly conscientious as a teacher, and his lectures were always thorough and well prepared. Characteristic of his way of communicating with students was his calmness and friendliness. It was always very easy for students to approach him. He was responsible for the organization of teaching in the entire department, and he was also in charge of the transition of the whole Faculty of Science to the Bologna system of degrees. As a personality, Vesa Ruuskanen was an exceptionally positive, constructive and unselfish character. There are a lot of ambitious personalities in the world of science who proceed in an aggressive manner, via conflicts. Ruuskanen certainly knew what he wanted, but he achieved it by peaceful negotiation and positive motivation. His judgements were widely appreciated even beyond his own field. Fate did not treat Ruuskanen well when he fell from a roof in September 1998 while helping his neighbour with construction work and was seriously injured. Recovery in a wheelchair was slow and painful, but he did his best and returned to his work as a professor in the spring of 2000. His scientific work, guidance of graduate studies and lecturing continued. Assisted by his wife, he even ventured to attend scientific conferences, in Denmark in the spring of 2001 and in Nantes, France, in the summer of 2002, where he also chaired a session at Quark Matter 2002. Fate hit him a second time in the spring of 2005, when he was diagnosed with a lymphoma. The disease was controlled with modern treatment, but recurred in 2011. One can only deeply admire Vesa Ruuskanen s calm and rational attitude towards these blows of fate. Obituary by Keijo Kajantie 152 Academia Scientiarum Fennica 2011
