WAMS 2010,Ylivieska Monitoring service of energy efficiency in housing 13.10.2010 Jan Nyman, jan.nyman@posintra.fi
Background info STOK: development center for technology related to building automation STOK is part of Posintra Oy, a non-profit business development company of the Porvoo region Skaftkärr project, funded by SITRA A new residential area designed to be energy efficient, will have 6000 inhabitants Passive houses, Plus-energy houses, good public transport... but also novel technological solutions aiming to reduce energy consumption AsEMo project (funded by ERDF) Platform for gathering, visualizing and analyzing energy data
Skaftkärr Goals To create a residential area, which will function as a national and international pilot project regarding energy efficient planning Create guidance for an energy efficient city planning process Create a living lab, where a continuing improvement of energy efficiency is the goal. Develop new business models for energy companies.
Energy solutions in Skaftkärr Low energy and passive energy buildings Renewable energy for heating e.g. Solar collectors for district heating New business models for energy companies 24h tariffs for electricity will enable flexibility of the electricity demand Real-time energy consumption data ( beyond AMR ) both for the user, the community and the electricity company
How energy is consumed Lähde: Adato
Utilising realtime measurements Habits of consuption: monitoring reduces a known fact How do people collect, perceive and use information about energy (and energy consumption)? User experiences: Add-on value of history trends? For what else the information can be utilized? Monitoring (did I leave coffer maker on?) Killer application?
How to enable real-time energy consumption data Essentially Commercial off the shelf HW with custom SW DIY Kioto Wattson electricity meter Wireless, 433.92Mhz, approx. 30m range measures momentary effect, embedded display OpenWattson device driver Asus WL-500 gpv2 router WEB-KERUU server Custom software based on OpenWRT Linux Records consumption history data at 5-second intervals Presents a local UI to the user, 8-hour history viewable on a web browser Pushes history data to server using a simple but secure protocol History data available to user Enables e.g. energy consultation based on real consumption System components to be published as open source
The WEB-KERUU system Energy consumption as graph User can annotate graph User can publish annotated graph in Blog form User can compare consumption with similar houses, family sizes...
