1 A Brief History of Portland Finnish School Portlandin Suomi-Koulu or Finland School, as it was first called, was founded in 1982. It was born from the desire of a small group of Finnish women wanting to have their children learn the language and culture of their homeland. There had been similar schools in Europe which were receiving funds from the Department of Education in Finland. This was the first of its kind of Finnish language school in the United States. It was set up to run on a co-operative basis with a parent board and it was to be a total language immersion program. The school soon expanded from every other Saturday morning to four times a month. The second year a summer camp was added at end of the school year with all families participating. The Finnish School became one of leading groups to spearhead many cultural events in the Finnish community. It has continued this tradition, also taking part in other Scandinavian and special Portland events. Some of the highlights have been participating in the Junior Rose Parade, decorating the Pittock Mansion, celebrating Finland's 75th independence and the school's tenth anniversary with a special banquet with Finland's Ambassador attending. School's twentieth year with Finland's 85th independence celebration was extra special with many of the alumni students, grown up, being part of the organizing and providing the program. The Portland Finnish School continues to thrive, with new generations of children, parents, and teachers, actively pursuing the same goals with the purpose that was about to be realized almost 26 years ago: To teach the Finnish language as well as maintain the Finnish customs and Finnish culture with children and the Finnish community.
2 Tervetuloa Suomi-kouluperheeseen!!! Tervetuloa kaikki lapset ja vanhemmat meidän Suomi-kouluumme. Toivomme, että Suomi-kouluajastanne tulee menestyksekäs ja innostava, kiva kokemus koko perheelle. Tavoitteemme on antaa oppilaalle mahdollisuuksia kehittää suomen kielen taitoaan sekä suomalaisen kulttuurin tuntemusta tässä monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä. Pyrimme tarjoamaan erilaisia oppimiskokemuksia ryhmässä, joka parhaiten vastaa oppilaan ikää ja kielitaitoa. Jokainen oppilas on ainutlaatuinen yksilö ja opetuksen tarkoituksena on vahvistaa hänen persoonallisuuttaan ja taitojaan. Kodin ja koulun yhteistyö on ensiarvoisen tärkeää oppilaan menestykselle. Koulu tukee yhteisiä tavoitteita kaksikielisyyden säilyttämisessä ja motivoi oppilasta olemaan ylpeä taidoistaan. Suomi-koulu ei kuitenkaan yksin pysty opettamaan suomen kieltä ja siksi vanhempien, sukulaisten ja ystävien vuorovaikutus suomen kielellä onkin kullan arvoista.
3 Welcome to the Finnish School Family We welcome you and your child to the Portland Finnish School. We hope that all students will have a fun and productive experience at our school. Our goal is to provide our students opportunities to develop their Finnish language skills and knowledge of Finnish culture. A variety of group activities are provided in student groups of similar age and language skill level. Each student is treated as a unique individual and encouraged to reach their full potential. We emphasize close contact between the school and families. Teachers and parents are expected to work closely together to ensure the success of each student. Every member of the Finnish School family is vital to the progress of the students. We welcome you as part of our big family.

Vanhemmat vastaavat lastensa ja itsensä vakuutusten voimassaolosta. Mikäli vanhemmat eivät ole paikalla koululla mahdollisen onnettomuuden tapahtuessa lapselle, opettaja toimii tilanteen mukaan parhaaksi näkemällään tavalla.
12 Members/member families responsibilities at the School 1. Arrive at the school in time, preferably a few minutes early. 2. Participate in all Finnish School activities and events and encourage your family to join you. 3. Attend membership meetings. Members may attend Board meetings as well 4. Participate in all fund-raising activities 5. Pay registration and other fees on time. Portland Finnish School By-laws are available at internet; portlandfinnishschool.org or you may request a copy from the Board In case of illness or an accident If your child or you are sick, please stay home and take care of yourselves. The Teacher is responsible to send a sick student home before school day starts when needed. The school does not carry an insurance. The parents are responsible for insuring their children and themselves. If in case of an accident neither of the child s parents is available, the Teacher will take appropriate action.
13 Suomi-koulun kirjasto Haluamme toivottaa kaikki jäsenet tervetulleiksi koulun kirjastoon!!! Kirjasto tarjoaa mukavan valikoiman kirjoja, opetusmateriaalia, lehtiä, videoita, CDromeja sekä musiikkia. Kirjastomateriaalia on perheen pienimmistä aikuisiin iltasaduista tietokirjoihin, runokokoelmista kuvakirjoihin. Kirjasto sijaitsee Pioneer Methodist kirkon tiloissa. Kirjaston käyttöaika on lauantaikoulun koulupäivinä ennen tai jälkeen tuntien tai välitunnin aikana. Lainausohjeet: - kirjoita nimesi sekä lainauspäivämäärä kirjastomateriaalin lainauskorttiin - Laita kortti kirjastokortti-laatikkoon - Suositeltava laina-aika on kaksi(2) viikkoa Materiaali palautetaan koulutuntien alussa palautuslaatikkoon. Kiitos!! Portland Finnish School Library We would like to invite all members to take advantage of the school library!!! There is quite a variety of books, teaching material, magazines, videos, CD-roms and music etc. in our Library. We have books for very young ones, children who are learning to read, youngsters and adults subjects from fairytales to science, poetry and picture books. The Library is located at Pioneer Methodist Church. We have a Library cupboard in one of our classrooms. The Library is open on Saturday School days before or after the classes or during the break. Checking out material - Fill out your name and the date you are checking out the material in the card. Each item has its own library checkout card - Place the card in the card box - Two (2) weeks is usually a good time frame for returning When returning place the material in the Return box before the classes start. 14 Varainkeräys Portlandin Suomi-koulu on nonprofit organisaatio, jonka tulot kertyvät ositttain ustuksista, varainkeruusta ja jäsenmaksuista. Koulun oman varainkeruun osuus on merkittävä osa tulonlähteestä ja siksi jokaisen jäsenen panos on erittäin tärkeä. Koulun tax ID on 93-1331439 Lukuvuoden aikana on suunniteltu seuraavat varainkeräyskampanjat Scanfair-joulumyyjäiset joulukuussa 2010 Muut varainkeräystempaukset suunnitellaan tarvittaessa myöhemmin Kaikkien jäsenperheiden velvollisuus on osallistua parhaan oman kykynsä mukaan koulun varainkeräykseen. Scanfair joulumyyjäiset on Scandinavian Heritage Foundationin järjestämä tilaisuus, johon koulu on perinteisesti ottanut osaa. Koulu maksaa vuokraa myyntipöydistä sekä myös tietyn provision myyntituloista Foundationille. Myyjäiset on täysin vapaaehtoistyöllä ylläpidetty ja kaikki myytävät tuotteet ovat jäsenperheiden valmistamia tai lahjoittamia myytäväksi koulun hyväksi. Myyjäiset järjestetään Portland State University, Smith Center, Broadway & Harrison, Portland. Lahjoitukset yksityisiltä tai yrityksiltä. Toivomme jäsenten hankkivan lahjoituksia vuoden aikana perheenjäseniltä ja tuttavilta. Kaikki lahjoitukset ovat 100% vähennyskelpoisia verotuksessa. Lahjoitukset/shekit osoitetaan Portlandin Suomi-koululle ja voi toimittaa rahastonhoitajalle, joka toimittaa kuitin verotusta varten. Erillinen lista koulun lahjoitusluokituksista löytyy liitteenä.
15 Fundraising Portland Finnish School is a non-profit Organization which income comes from contributions, fundraising and tuition. Fundraising will be a big deal of our income and therefore we count on all our members for their input. Portland Finnish School tax ID is 93-1331439 Following fundraising activities are planned for this school year Scanfair Christmas Bazaar December Other fundraisings will be decided later All members are expected to participate in our fundraising activities. Scanfair Christmas Bazaar is organized by Scandinavian Heritage Foundation and our school has had a sale booth there for years. The school pays a rent and also a provision to the Foundation based on sales. The booth is managed by volunteers from the school and all items are made or donated by member families or others. All sale revenues go to the benefit of the school. Scanfair is held on the campus of Portland State University, Smith Center, Broadway & Harrison, Portland. More information will follow. Contributions from individual and businesses are always welcome. We encourage all members to collect contributions during the school year from their family members or friends or other people. All contributions are 100% tax deductible. All donations/checks should be made payable to Portland Finnish School and send to the treasurer who will send a receipt in return. A copy of benefactor categories is attached.

17 Saturday School Lunch and cleaning duty list: Saturday School Snack is provided by parents in turns. Snack is served at 11.30 am -12 pm in the fellowship room or other designated area. The parent in duty will set up the snack and she/he is responsible for helping the children when needed as well as keeping up good manners and rules. There is no running in the hallways and in the fellowship room. Also the piano or other items belonging to the church are out of limits for the children. Please provide a healthy snack with a drink (juice). You may also provide a snack for the parents attending the school if you wish. The school will provide paper plates, napkins and cups. (Class room closet.) If you need anything else to serve your snack, please, bring those items with you. The Secretary will coordinate the Snack-Cleaning duty list and make sure that every one will have their turn and all school days are covered. The clean up duty Clean up after the snack After classes: Make sure the classrooms are clean and tidy. Teachers and students will clean up the tables, but you might need to wipe them with the cleaner and paper towel. If you need to vacuum, check the closet in the fellowship room for a vacuum cleaner. Clean up the bathroom. Empty the garbage cans and place a new bag in the bins. Make sure all windows are closed and locked and lights are off Teachers will lock the doors in turns (cupboards and front door)
