The Lehernecks (1-3, 0-1 MVFC) have recorded their lone win this season in the opener against Sam Houston Ste, whereas the Penguins earned three-straight victories over Austin Peay, Northeastern and Indiana Ste, in their conference opener. Western opened league play last weekend against then-ranked No. 8 Southern Illinois Salukis home. The btle between Western and Youngstown Ste is the Lehernecks first league game on the road this season. Holding a 1-1 league record, the Penguins experienced success Indiana Ste, but fell to Missouri Ste, 17-7, last weekend it its first conference home game. Youngstown Ste holds a 1-1 record home, while holds a 1-1 record on the road. Surday s game is the 25th time Western will face Youngstown Ste in a series ding back to Sept. 20, The Penguins have defeed the Lehernecks in the past five games, however, four of those games were decided by a touchdown or less. Youngstown Ste currently ranks fifth in the Missouri Valley Football League standings, while is just below Illinois Ste in seventh. Undefeed in league play, Northern Iowa, South Dakota Ste and Southern Illinois sit the top, each 2-0. All three of those teams are ranked nionally with Northern Iowa holding the highest ranking of No. 3. Surday s game is the second game of the season with acting head coach Mark Hendrickson the helm of the program. Hendrickson compiled a 5-2 record last season as acting head coach. He also remains as the team s offensive coordinor. 2 2 Youngstown Ste YOUNGSTOWN STATE preview Wh is a Leherneck? holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps official nickname, The Fighting Lehernecks, in 1927 when then-hletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray Rock Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his stus as a Marine hero, to use the Marine s official seal, bulldog mascot and nickname. 25 Years: MVFC Silver Anniversary Team As a part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Silver Anniversary Celebrion, you are invited to participe in the selection of the all-time football team. The Missouri Valley Football Conference was founded in 1985 as the Geway Conference and competed under th banner from As part of a rebranding initiive in 2008, the league changed its name to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. F I G H T I N G L E A T H E R N E C K S The Last Time Western Faced Youngstown Ste... Herb Donaldson became the Missouri Valley Football Conference s all-time leading rusher with a 235-yard performance in then ranked-no loss to Youngstown Ste. The Lehernecks played cch-up all day after falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter. Both teams had missed field goals on their first possessions, as the Penguins first drive ended with 44-yard tempt th was blocked by Josh Galloway. The Lehernecks were able to reach the 22-yard line on their first tempt, but a 39-yard try missed wide left. On their first drive of the fourth quarter, the Penguins 27-yard field goal proved to be the difference in the game, capping a 10-play, 86-yard drive th gave them their largest lead of the game, 31-21, with 9:22 left. Barr opened the ensuing drive with a 28-yard completion to Senus, who also had an 11- yard reception ler in the drive. Donaldson carried the ball 10 times on the 13-play, 80-yard possession and reached the end zone on a 4-yard run to bring the Lehernecks within three. The defense then forced the Penguins to punt, giving the Lehernecks their final possession their own 42-yard line with 58 seconds remaining. However, Barr s third-down pass down the sideline to Senus was intercepted the 26-yard line. Both players appeared to have control of the ball, but De Angelo Wilson stripped Senus as the pair was coming down on the sideline. Senus caught five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, while Barr was 7-of-11 for 100 yards on the day. Gibbs, who also caught a pass, ran for 63 yards on 11 carries to combine with Donaldson for 298 of Western s 431 total yards. Possibility of New QB Left-handed quarterback Mt Barr was forced to the sidelines during the second quarter in last week s game against Southern Illinois due to a sprain to his throwing hand. The junior QB had eight consecutive starts under his belt with a continuion from last season and currently owns the most career starts of any player on offense with 24. Possibly taking on Barr s role in this week s game is redshirt-freshman Wil Lunt. Out of Rochester High School, Lunt ended his high school career (2007) as the No. 2 passer in the country with 3,383 yards and became the all-time leading passer in Illinois history with 8,393 yards. So far this season, Lunt has seen playing time against both Northern and Southern. Lunt threw 4-for-8 for 24 yards against the Huskies. He completed 7-of-19 for 50 yards against the Salukis. His longest pass was 16 yards, however he also threw a pair of interceptions in the last game. Another possibility the QB position is redshirt freshman Cody Reardon, who was named Offensive Scout Team Co-Player of the Year last season. Speight & Special Teams: Returns wide receiver Todd Speight earned the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor after he after he totaled 295 return yards (207 kickoff yards, 88 punt yards) in the game against Stephen F. Austin. Speight returned both a kick and a punt for a touchdown, which is the first time in school history th a player returned both for a touchdown in a game LEATHERNECK FOOTBALL Speight averages yards per punt return, which is the third-best return average in the nion. He returns 1.67 punts per game and has totaled 116 yards in five returns. Western Illinois holds the best punt return average (23.2) in the league. Speight s kick return average of 22.0 is the second-best in the league behind North Dakota Stes Shamen Washington, who holds a 25.7 average. Speight s longest return of 93 yards is the longest of any player in the league and his 528 total yards is the most. Youngstown Ste s Dominique Barnes is just behind Speight in league stistics with a 20.0 kick return average.

3 3 Youngstown Ste GAME NOTES Sportsmanship: A Leherneck practice College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note. As part of a sportsmanship initiive, the American Football Coaches Associion and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange teamwide handshakes on the field before kickoff. Grant Teaff, executive director of the AFCA, says college football players and teams are in a pressure-packed environment and th encouraging respect and sportsmanship is important. Coaches are required to shake before and after games, but having players do it in an organized way is new. The handshake is only planned for the first week of games, and is not mandory, though, Teaff says all schools have been asked to participe. Harmon: A True Marine Redshirt-freshman fullback Mike Harmon is a 23-year old former Marine who spent four years and three months of active duty in the Marine Corps. The 5-foot pound Peoria, Ill., nive served three tours in Iraq in Infantry and was the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year last season. NFL pipeline annually has one of the country s highest number of alumni on active NFL rosters. Six of the last seven Super Bowl championship teams have included former Lehernecks. Super Bowl XLII feured a Leherneck on each sideline - Giants starting offensive guard Rich Seubert and Priots starting safety Rodney Harrison. The newest Leherneck in the league for the 2009 season is Jason Williams. Williams was the first FCS player taken in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected as the Dallas Cowboys first pick of the draft. F I G H T I N G L E A T H E R N E C K S Leherneck Passing Game The Penguins show a pretty even offensive tack averaging rushing yards per game and passing yards per game, but the Lehernecks average 247 passing yards per game, which is ranked as the No. 20 passing offense in the country. Western averages 86.2 rushing yards per game. Senus Remains in Top-10 in Nion for Receiving Yards per Game Lito Senus connected with Barr in game one for 11 cches, resulting in 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the season as a whole, Senus has recorded 30 cches in four games for 435 yards. Averaging 7.5 cches per game, Senus holds the No. 8 spot in the FCS stistics nionwide. Receiving: Lunt to Senus Of the seven completions Lunt threw in the second half of last game, he connected with Senus for three of them. Senus holds the second-best receptions per game average (7.5) in the Valley with 30 receptions in four games, just behind Illinois Ste s Eyad Salem, who averages 7.6 (38 rec./5 gms). However, Senus has recorded the most receiving yards of any player in the league with 435 total. Senus leads the Lehernecks in receptions (30), but Lunt spreads the ball around the field as Western had seven players with a reception last game and nine players have had least one reception this season. Glazier: A Defensive Leader Kyle Glazier has been a defensive leader for the Lehernecks in all four games this season. Averaging 9.5 tackles per game, Glazier sits tied in the Valley for the second-best average. He tallied a season-high 13 tackles against Stephen F. Austin and led the Leherneck defense last game with eight total tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception, which he returned for 16 yards. The interception was his second-straight this season and third of his career. Glazier has compiled 38 total tackles this season, 12 solo and 26 assisted in addition to a sack, his interceptions (2), one pass break up, three defended passes and a recovered fumble. Last season, the junior linebacker led the team with 105 total tackles. Defending the Pass Senior defensive back Prick Stoudamire leads the Valley in passes deflected as he has recorded nine in four games, averaging 2.25 per game. The nine passes tallied so far this season equals his season total from the last two seasons. Stoudamire recorded a career-high passes broken up Sam Houston Ste with four. He has also added a pair of tackles for loss this season in addition to forcing a fumble in game one ( Sam Houston Ste). Returning Home to Ohio True freshman defensive back Ben Schneider returns to his home ste in the mchup against the Penguins as he is a nive of Cincinni, Ohio and a gradue of Moeller High School. Schneider has appeared in all four games this season for the Lehernecks and has recorded a pair of tackles, one Northern Illinois and one against Stephen F. Austin. He earned allconference honors and team defensive MVP recognition Moeller. He led the Crusaders in tackles as a strong safety for two years and totaled 68 tackles in both 2007 and MVFC Player of the Week Honorees Mt Barr was the first co-offensive player of the week in the Missouri Valley Football Conference this season. He wasn t the only Leherneck to receive conference honors as junior offensive lineman Mike Lamphear earned his first MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor in the same week. A pair of games ler, punt and kick returner Todd Speight earned a the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor after returning both a kick and a punt for a touchdown, which is the first time in school history th a player returned both for a touchdown in a game (against Stephen F. Colge (2003) Q U I C K F A C T S Pterson Steps Down as Head Football Coach Citing Health Concerns In his 11th season with the football program, head coach Don Pterson has announced he will step down from his head coaching role due to personal health concerns, Friday, Sept. 25th. Pterson, who was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer last July, missed most of the 2008 preseason camp and the first seven games of the year as he underwent trement for cancer. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinor Mark Hendrickson took over as acting head coach immediely. Hendrickson served as acting head coach for the first seven games of the 2008 season while Pterson was undergoing cancer trements. Newest members of Leherneck coaching staff Former Northern Arizona assistant coach Carl Franks joined the football staff in February 2009 as the defensive backs coach. On the other side of the ball, former fullback Javid Milton ( ) has returned to the Lehernecks, only this time on the sidelines. Milton will assist Josh McCall with the offensive line as an undergradue student coach. Five captains named for 2009 season The Lehernecks voted and five captains were chosen to lead the 2009 team in Kyle Glazier, Trokon Tompo, Buddy Dudzcak, Mt Barr and Dre Gibbs. Being as is the Lehernecks, the defense developed a btle flag th represents them as a unit. The motto th was selected for the 106th is a Lin phrase th transles wh I do, I do well. The 106th Defense is divided up by class from the Generals (seniors), the Colonels (juniors), the Majors (sophomores), the Captains (redshirt-freshmen), down to the Lieutenants (freshman). The flag of the 106th is different than any previous or future btle flag, just as this year s defense is different from any past or future defensive units. It will be proudly carried and defended into each and every btle this season.
