Management of Rivers and Lakes
Finnish Strongholds In Water Resources Management Long-term target setting and policies step by step approaches Water policies based on research data Holistic planning processes Stakeholder Engagement & Co-operation Good governance, institutions at place Co-operation in trans-boundary water bodies Know-how in water technologies
Finland in Restoration of Rivers and Lakes Restoration projects since the 1960s Over 800 lakes and rivers restored Holistic approach and reliable implementation from start to finish Knowledge based actions Restoration on land & in lake/river Large variety of Restoration methods used - based on desired conditions e.g. Oxydation Dredging Raising water levels Wetland construction Biomanipulation Macrophyte control Chemical nutrient removal etc. Provided support to many international projects
Elements for Sustainable Quality Water Regulation Research Legistlation All these elements are needed to guarantee sustainability of quality water Technology Quality water Authorities & Administration Planning & Implementation Education Maintenance & Management Users
Supporting Partner With holistic view and long term commitment Steps for a successful Management project Creates the foundation for all the next steps to be succesfull Will and Commitment People and decision makers strong support from relevant parties Understanding the Water System Baseline information: Localizing main external and internal sources of pollution/contamination Monitoring: Real-time information of the state of the water system & water quality and quantity Modeling: Forecasting water quality and quantity, impact of removal of external loading & continuous (real-time) monitoring and data providing modeling Catchment area activities Eliminating loading/pollution & Securing Water Urban: wastewater and solid waste collection and treatment Industrial: wastewater and solid waste collection and treatment Rural: wastewater and waste collection and treatment Agriculture: prevention of runoff of nutrients, pesticides, herbicides, etc. Land use: forestation, urban permeable surface and retention areas etc. Restoring the Waterways and Bodies Restoration of transitional wetland and riparian buffer zones Restoration of watershed areas continues Reduction of point, non-point and floating pollution continues Water purification solutions for various waters uses Ecological management

Understanding the Water System Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE) model Understanding the Water System creates a solid foundation on the next steps of the restoration project Purpose of the model is to Support selecting actions Monitor effects Forecast the system Benefit of the SYKE model Model allows user institutions to profile and develop system independently Open source idealogy Developers can be own institutions staff or local staff Long-term target setting and policies step by step approaches Research on water resources in the catchment and river transport Data collection on the water cycle, water storages and rivers in the target catchment On-line monitoring of water quantity and quality Automatic stations will be used for main variables Adequate network for data updating Simulation of the water cycle in present conditions and under global change Hydrological watershed model (WSFS) and hydraulic river model (SOBEK) can be utilized.
