Suomen stratigrafinen komitea Since 2005 the Stratigraphic Commission of Finland provides guidance for stratigraphic procedure, terminology and revision of geological units in Finland 12
Stratigraphic Commission of Finland / Suomen Stratigrafinen komitea The creation of geological databases requires solid and uniform classification systems. National and international efforts to harmonize geological information calls for the internationally compatible terminology. The global working environment and the need for global communication, data exchange and interoperability is not more only for leading scientists but for everybody in the broad field of geology. The search of information, especially with modern information technology tools, can be highly improved by consistent terminology and hierarchical classification systems. 13

Schematic illustration about the Precambrian bedrock and its lithodemic units (A-H), and their possible classification. Deformed and metamorphosed lithodemes may form group (suite, supersuite, complex), which is at higher rank level than lithodeme. 18 The plutonic lithodemes or the dyke lithodemes may form plutonic suite or dyke suite, respectively. Genetically related plutonic and dyke rocks can be grouped as a magmatic supersuite (modified from NSC, 1989).

Problems in the field mapping of deformed & metamophosed Precambrian sedimentary rocks Origin of the supracrustals: is it volcanic or sedimentary rock Are structures primary (syndepositional) or secondary (hard-rock tectonic deformation) Direction of younging (top directions) Are rocks folded Major lithostratigraphic contacts tend to become deformation zones You can t do stratigraphy without doing structural consideration 20
Diagnostic features and indicators Sedimentary structures are most valuable as no fossils in Precambrian record, however columnar stromatolites and biofilms exists Cross-stratification or grading for top directions Bedding surfaces need to be recognized Clast sizes tell about transport (max. clast size by averaging 10 largest clasts for each clast compositions) Congl./sandstone and sandstone/mudstone ratio Bed-thickness Frost-fractures in glacial and periglacial environment Intraformational conglomerates Soft-sedimentary folds in varved laminates 21
Prekambrin määrittelyä ja kronostratigrafinen jako The Precambrian Eon represents almost 90% of Earth s geological history and the known sedimentary rock record reflects c. 85% of geological time. The Precambrian rock record as a whole contains about 75% of global mineral resources, with iron and manganese being almost completely derived from such ancient sediments. One of the "great principles" of Precambrian sedimentation patterns is that the vast majority of Precambrian sedimentary lithologies, their contained structures and their interpreted genetic models almost all have Phanerozoic-Modern counterparts. Throughout Earth history, biogenic processes have contributed significantly to the sedimentary record and to atmospheric changes. The significant length of time represented by the Precambrian (sedimentary) record provides a highly topical window into the evolution of the Earth (particularly, its crustal, continental, geochemical and palaeo-atmospheric development). 22
Categories of material units and units defined on the basis of bounding unconformities and physical limits A tectonostratigraphic unit is a body of rock that has been shifted or displaced along a thrust fault, i.e. is located above or between thrusts. Sequence stratigraphy studies the relationships between the architecture of the stratigraphic record and cyclic changes in a base level, where the different depositional trends can be studied and analyzed from variable scales. 23
Categories expressing or related to geological age, which can be divided into time or material units that formed within a specific time span A chronostratigraphic unit is a synchronous (i.e. simultaneous) bounded body of stratified rock that forms a material reference for all the rocks formed during the same period of time. A geochronological unit is a division of time defined on the basis of boundaries of chronostratigraphical units. 25
Geologinen aikataulu (aika ilmoitettu miljoonina vuosina nykyhetkestä taaksepäin) 26
Precambrian Time Scale From the time of initial accretion and differentiation (ca. 4560 Ma) to the first appearance of abundant hardbodied fossils (the onset of the Cambrian Period at 542 Ma), the Precambrian spans 88 percent of Earth history 27
Formal subdivisions of the Precambrian in near future can be annotated with key events in Earth s evolution (Episodes, Vol. 27, no. 2) 28

Lithostratigraphic /Litodemic Units A lithostratigraphic unit is a stratum or body of strata, comprising stratified rocks and superficial deposits, which are distinguished and defined based on lithological properties and stratigraphic boundary relations A lithodemic unit is a non-stratified body of intrusive, volcanic or highly metamorphosed and/or completely deformed rock that lacks primary depositional structures 31
