4 K arita Mattila is one of today s most exciting lyric dramatic sopranos. She is recognised as much for the beauty and versatility of her lyric voice as for her extraordinary stage ability. She studied first at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where her teacher was Liisa Linko-Malmio, and since 1984 she has been studying with Vera Rózsa. Ms Mattila sings in all the major opera houses and major Festivals of the world in repertoire which encompasses Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Puccini and Wagner. Her affinity with the dramatic side of opera has produced marvellous results when working with fine stage directors such as Luc Bondy who helped her to achieve a remarkable performance in his highly acclaimed Don Carlos, seen in Paris, London and at the Edinburgh Festival. Likewise, Lev Dodin in his productions of Elektra for the Salzburg Easter Festival and Pique Dame at the Opéra Bastille, Peter Stein for his production of Simon Boccanegra in Salzburg, Robert Carsen in his production of Lohengrin at the Bastille and Jürgen Flimm for his Fidelio in New York. Karita Mattila sings regularly with the world s great conductors including Abbado, Davis, Gergiev, Haitink, Levine, Pappano, Salonen, Sawallisch and Dohnanyi. Her 40 th birthday concert, in front of nearly 12,000 people in Helsinki, has been released on disc by Ondine. Engagements in the season 2002/03 include Elektra and Jenufa at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Katya Kabanova in San Francisco, Jenufa at the Châtelet in Paris, Fidelio with the Munich Philharmonic under James Levine, and recitals and concerts in Europe, the USA and Canada. In 2001 the New York Times chose Karita Mattila as the best singer of the year for her performance in Fidelio at the Metropolitan Opera, and in the same year she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award Outstanding achievement in Opera for both Jenufa and Lisa in Pique Dame at the Royal Opera House. In 1997 she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for her performance of Elisabeth in Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House; awarded the Evening Standard Ballet, Opera and Classical Music Awards for Outstanding performance of the year in this production; and the Académie du Disque Lyrique awarded the François Reichenbach Prize Orphée du Lyrique when Don Carlos was originally shown at the Châtelet in Paris. In 1998 the recording of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, in which she sings the role of Eva, won the Best Opera Award at the Grammy ceremony in New York. An essential component of the artist personality of Karita Mattila is that she is equally at home with performing popular music as with concert music. She has recorded several successful discs of popular music for Ondine.

6 T he Turku Philharmonic Orchestra has a long and distinguished history in promoting symphonic music. The Turku Music Society, which was founded in 1790, organized concerts with symphonies by Haydn and Beethoven on the programme while the composers were still alive. In the early 20th century, Jean Sibelius conducted his own works at 18 concerts in Turku. The oldest orchestra in Finland and one of the oldest in the world, the Turku orchestra was made into a municipal institution in 1927 with a membership of 29. Today, there are 74 members, making the Turku Philharmonic the fourth largest symphony orchestra in Finland. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra has included among its regular conductors such names as Tauno Hannikainen, Toivo Haapanen, Ole Edgren, Jorma Panula, Paavo Rautio, Pertti Pekkanen, Igor Bezrodnyi, Jacques Mercier and Hannu Lintu. Juha Kangas has been principal guest conductor since autumn 2001. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared all around Europe and in China. The orchestra participates in the annual opera productions of the Turku Opera, appears regularly at the Turku Music festival and is one of the organizers of the Aboa musica festival of contemporary music. The orchestra also hosts the Aurapromenaari and Philharmonia Week events each autumn, and is involved in the Centre for Nordic Music founded in Turku in 2001. P ertti Pekkanen completed his conductor s examination at the Sibelius Academy in 1972, having studied with Jorma Panula, among others. In the 1973 74 season, he was assistant conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and for the next twelve years he conducted the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1987 88, he was locum Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Sibelius Academy. He was Chief Conductor of the Kuopio City Orchestra from 1989 to 1991. He has also been conductor of the Lappeenranta and Vaasa City Orchestras. In 1984, Pekkanen made his début as an opera conductor at the Finnish National Opera, where he has subsequently conducted the premiere of Aho s opera Hyönteiselämää (Insect Life) and a production of Kokkonen s Viimeiset kiusaukset (The Last Temptations). He has conducted several productions at the Turku Opera and productions of Der Fliegende Holländer, Pique Dame and Manon Lescaut at the Tampere Opera, the two latter with Karita Mattila. He conducted the production of La forza del destino at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1999 2000. Pekkanen has appeared as a guest conductor in Scandinavia, Poland, Germany, Britain and Russia, where he has conducted the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also appeared with the Tokio and Osaka Philharmonic Orchestras in Japan.
F ounded in 1982, the symphonic choir Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis derives its name from Turku Cathedral, where it often participates in services. The choir regularly appears with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, performing three to five major choral works per year. The choir has also appeared with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Tampere Philharmonic and the Jyväskylä City Orchestra. In addition to touring in Finland, the choir has also visited France and Sweden. Top Finnish soloists such as Karita Mattila, Matti Salminen, Soile Isokoski, Raimo Sirkiä and Monica Groop have performed with the choir, as have international stars such as Kiri te Kanawa. The choir s extensive core repertoire includes all major sacred works for choir and orchestra. The choir has also performed contemporary works such as Wind Pictures (1992) by Mikko Heiniö, Ecce magnus presbiter (2000) by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, commissioned for the 700th anniversary of the consecration of Turku Cathedral, and the Sixth Symphony (2002) of Pehr Henrik Nordgren. The repertoire further includes selections from operas, operettas and musicals. Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis has been conducted by Jouko Hytönen and Raili Leinonen; from 1990, Juha Kuivanen has been artistic director. Kuivanen teaches choir conducting at the Sibelius Academy and at the Turku Conservatory. He was conductor of the Tapiola Chamber Choir from 1992 to 1997, and he is at present also conductor of the Finnish Philharmonic Choir (from 1991). 7
