Investment Cost Example Acquisition/rental cost of land/buildings for datacenter in Finland is very competitive. Finland has one of Europe's lowest energy prices and best free cooling potential. Compared to Central Europe, over 10 years Finland enables over 20 M in cost savings in energy cost alone. Investment cost for 15MW Tier III datacenter is about 60M 46 % Energy infra (2N) Datacenter infra 10 % 22 % 22 % Water cooling infra (2N) Other cost 4

Google Datacenter in Finland Will be a 200-million datacenter. Google bought the paper mill in 2009 for 40 million. Two server halls are planned. The first one will be 8,000 square meters (86,110 square foot). Cooled by sea water using water from the Baltic Sea. Google s first datacenter to be chilled entirely using sea water, and to their knowledge, it s also the first ever datacenter to do so. Will go live in spring 2011 and Google plans to employ 50-60 people to run the data center. Why Hamina/Summa? Finland has a relatively cold climate and on the coast there is access to cold sea water from the Baltic Sea for cooling. Cooling costs are otherwise a major power expense for datacenters.
