Pronomini korvaa substantiivia (nimisanaa) tai viittaa siihen.
Erilaisia pronomineja
Pronomineja käytetään kuten substantiiveja, mutta käyttämällä pronominia vältät toistamasta substantiivia.
Englannin kielessä on kahdeksan pronominiluokkaa: 1. Persoonapronominit (minä, sinä, hän, se, me, te, he) 2. Possessiivipronominit (omistus) 3. Demonstratiivipronominit (tämä, tuo ) 4. Refleksiivipronominit (myself, yourself ) 5. Interrogatiivipronominit (kysyvät) 6. Relatiivipronominit (aloittavat sivulauseen: joka, mikä ) 7. Resiprookkipronominit (each other, one another) 8. Indefiniittipronominit (anybody, each, no one, both )
PERSOONA- PRONOMINIT
Persoonapronominit edustavat asioita tai ihmisiä. Käyttäessämme niitä meidän on huomioitava: Lukumäärä: yksikkö (I) or monikko ( we). Persoona: 1. persoona (I), 2. persoona (you) vai 3. persoona (he). Suku: male he), female (she) or neuter (it). Sija: subject (we) or object (us) Käytämme persoonapronomineja korvaamaan henkilönimeä tai substantiivia.

Käytämme pronomininia it havaintojen tekemiseen:. - It is nice to have a holiday sometimes. - It is important to dress well. Käytämme pronominia it puhuessamme säästä, lämpötilasta, ajasta ja etäisyyksistä. -It's raining. -It will probably be hot tomorrow. -Is it ten o'clock yet? -It's 50 kilometers from here to Bristol.
Possessiivipronominit (itsenäiset)
Tässä näet itsenäisiä possessiivipronomineja ja esimerkkejä käytöstä. Possessiivipronominit voivat olla: - subjektina tai objektina - viitata yksikölliseen tai monikolliseen sanaan LUKU yksikkö monikko Persoona 1st 2nd 3rd 1st 2nd 3rd Possessiivipronominit mine yours his hers ours yours theirs
Esimerkkejä: -Look at these drawings. Mine is the big one. (subject = my drawing) -I like your drawings. Do you like mine? (object = my drawings) -All the stories were good but his was the best. (subject = his story) -John found his ticket but Clare couldn't find hers. (object = her ticket)

REFLEKSIIVI- PRONOMINIT
Refleksiivipronominia käytetään viittaamaan edellä olevaan subjektiin (korostamaan sitä)..
Refleksiivipronominit päättyvät yksikössä "-self" ja monikossa "-selves". luku refleksiivipronomini YKSIKKÖ myself yourself himself, herself, itself MONIKKO ourselves yourselves themselves
Alleviivatut sanat viittaavat SAMAAN henkilöön/asiaan: - I saw myself in the mirror. - Why do you blame yourself? - Kate sent herself a copy.
-I made it myself OR I myself made it. -Have you yourself seen it? OR Have you seen it yourself? -She spoke to me herself OR She herself spoke to me.
DEMONSTRATIIVI PRONOMINIT
Demonstratiivipronominit THIS, THESE, THAT, THOSE. THE FORMER, THE LATER THE FIRST, THE LAST THE OTHER,THE OTHERS SAME SUCH SO
Demonstratiivipronomini edustaa asiaa tai asioita: lähellä ajassa tai tilassa (this, these) kaukana ajassa tai tilassa (that, those) lähellä kaukana yksikkö this that THAT monikko these those This tastes terrible! These are good times. That is wonderful. Those were the days! THIS
HUOM! THAT-sanan eri merkitykset! 1. demonstratiivipronomini: That song is good. 2. relatiivipronomini: Anything that you remember could help a lot. 3. konjunktio: He said that he had been there before. 4. adverbi: The hill was that high.
INTERROGATIIVI -PRONOMINIT
Interrogatiivipronomineilla kysytään kysymyksiä: - interrogatiivipronomini edustaa asiaa, jota emme tiedä (ja josta kysymme) Kysyvät pronominit: who, whom, what, which. - Possessiivipronomini whose voi myös olla kysyvänä pronominina. subjekti objekti ihminen who whom asia ihminen/asia what which ihminen whose possessiivi

Relatiivi- pronominit
Relatiivipronomini aloittaa relatiivilauseen (sivulause). - relatiivipronominin tarkoite on edellä oleva substantiivi tai kokonainen lause, johon relatiivipronomini viittaa - substantiivi voi olla yksikössä tai monikossa - - RELATIIVIPRONOMINIT: who, whom, whose, which, that Who (subjekti) ja whom (objekti) viittaavat ihmisiin Whose ilmaisee omistusta Which viittaa asioihin That viittaa ihmisiin ja asioihin ja voi toimia subjektina tai objektina kiinteissä relatiivilauseissa (defining relative clauses)
Esimerkkejä: - The person who phoned me last night is aunt. my - The car which hit me was blue. - The person whom I phoned last night is my aunt. - The car, whose driver jumped out just before the accident, was completely destroyed
Resiprookkipronominit
Resiprookkipronomineja käytetään, kun kukin kahdesta tai useammasta subjektista suhtautuu samoin verbin ilmaisemaan tekemiseen. Resiprookkipronomineja on kaksi:
Examples: - John and Mary love each other. - The ten prisoners were all blaming one another. - Why don't we believe each other?
INDEFINIITTI- PRONOMINIT
Indefiniittipronominit eivät viittaa tiettyyn henkilöön, asiaan tai määrään, vaan ne ovat epämääräisiä.

Huom! Monet indefiniittipronominit toimivat myös muissa tehtävissä, esim. another : - He has one job in the day and another at night. (pronominina) - I'd like another drink, please. (adjektiivina)
Useimmat indefiniittipronominit ovat yksikköjä tai monikkoja. Muutamat kuitenkin voivat olla molempia kontekstista (yhteydestä) riippuen. Yksikölliseen pronominiin yhdistyy yksiköllinen verbi, myös pronominien on oltava samassa suvussa (persoona) ja luvussa. - All is forgotten. - All have arrived. - We can start the meeting because everybody has arrived. - Pam likes tea but not coffee. I think both are good.
