RePlast FinEst Training and Development Project Plastics (+ WEEE Plastic Components) recycling Workshop III 4.-5.2006 Pajulahti, Nastola Sauli Eerola
RePlast FinEst Project: Stages of research work Stage 1. Collecting background information (6-9/2005) Muovipoli Ltd & Tallinn University of Technology Sauli Eerola & Jaan Kers, Indrek Tiimus, Taavi Küttis Gathering and defining basic information in Finland and Estonia: EU-directives and national legislations, plans concerning this topic and earlier studies and also statistics (on plastic quality and amounts), presently existing plans and present development projects of trade and commerce) Main results were presented at Workshop I, 16.11.2006, Lahti Stage 2. Study (10/2005-6/2006) Muovipoli Ltd, Tallinn University of Technology Sauli Eerola, Hanna Halkola & Jaan Kers, Antti Roose Defining the amount, quality, location and degree of recycling of plastic wastes in Finland and Estonia. Defining refining of plastics and material variations and possibilities to develope new products. Includes visits to enterprises and interviews.
RePlast FinEst Project: Research work Information given by the research work reports will be basis to Expert Group work Expert Group will give conclusions, suggestions and recommendations for authorities and enterprises on how to develope recycling of plastics, concerning: Where and how different plastic waste streams can be treated Logistic requirements concerning plastics Possible integaration of plastic waste streams of separate countries Basic plans concerning e.g. collection of plastic waste and recycling Plastic waste recycling plants Possible organisations focused on plastic waste recycling technology and know-how
RePlast FinEst Project: Study Study was divided in four main parts: 1. Literature review Other studys/articles, environmental/plastic journals, www etc. 2. Interviews/project meetings Main actors in plastic recycling field were met 3. Analysing data of Environmental Administration of Finland (VAHTI-data) Companies producing plastic waste, need to have environment permission (ympäristölupavelvolliset yritykset) 4. Questionnaire of plastic waste amounts Plastic products manufacturers (don t have to have EP
RePlast FinEst Project Literature review 1. Production and use of plastics in Finland Information given by Finnish Plastics Industrie Federation 2. Plastic waste amounts in Finland Plastic packages, WEEE, plastics in waste cars, construction waste plastics, agricultural plastic waste 3. Plastic waste utilizers in Finland

RePlast FinEst Project Experimental Part 1. Interviews/project meetings Nothing earthquaking 2. Analysis of VAHTI-data Environmental Administration of Finland made a data run concerning the plastic waste We made statistics and analysis of the data VAHTI classification: Origin type (8 classes), producted and received plastic waste by the treatment method (10 classes both) As a result, we get Plastic waste amounts produced and received regionally Treatment method (recycling, incineration, landfill etc.)

RePlast FinEst Project Summary -Work was very challenging -Recycling plastics in municipal waste is very hard to be incresed->incineration better than landfilling -WEEE-plastics recycling is also a challenge, which enterprises are interested of: - e.g. 5-10 plastic types in one equipment - incineration and recycling -ELV: 95% utilizing target in 2015 -Plastic packages: recycling target 22,5 in the end of year 2008 -Lot of challenges in every area
