Maailmanlaajuisesta lamasta huolimatta hänen johtamansa teollisuusyritys oli taloudellisesti hyvässä kunnossa. Mäntästä haluttiin rakentaa yritykselle näyttävä pääkonttoripaikkakunta, ja taiteella oli tässä tärkeä rooli. Kaupungin keskustaan, Koskelanlammen rantaan, oli tarkoitus rakentaa taidemuseo, johon Serlachiusten keräämä taidekokoelma sijoitettaisiin. Since the museum began its activities, the park has been maintained regularly and its trees have been renewed. The primary objective of the park s renewal in 1997 was to restore its most important original features, such as the composition of the two symmetrical plant-lined paths between the main building and the lake. Original plant species, such as garden phloxes, false goatbeards, Japanese plantain lilies, common peonies, as well as thousands of bulbous plants, were also restored. 1 The Serlachius art collection receives the spaces it deserves Opening the Gösta extension will be one of the greatest milestones in the history of our art foundation. Despite the global economic recession at that time, the industrial company which he headed was economically sound. There was a wish to transform Mänttä into a location worthy of the company headquarters, and art played an important role in that. The aim was to build an art museum in the centre of the town, near to the shore of the Koskelanlampi lake, and where the Serlachius art collection would be housed. The building of the art museum was, however, delayed when Gösta Serlachius died in 1942. And with the ongoing war, the project was shelved. His wife Ruth Serlachius, nevertheless, wanted to honour her husband s wishes, and so opened the lower rooms of the couple s home, Joenniemi manor, as a museum for the general public in 1945. The art museum led a quiet life until the 1980 s when the purposeful development of the museum s activities took off. By the 00 s, the museum was known above all for its valuable collection and fine surroundings. It was realised, however, that Joenniemi manor house was inevitably too small for the operations of a modern art museum. Therefore, the construction of an extension to the art museum was written into the foundation s strategy in 08. The final decision to initiate the project was made in 10. Economically, the decision was aided by the industrialist Gustaf Serlachius bequeathing a substantial inheritance to the foundation. hundreds of entries thousands of working hours We decided already at an early stage that the project would be advanced through an open international architectural competition. In retrospect, it is easy to see that the decision was indeed the correct one. Architects from around the world spent innumerable hours on our project and the jury was able to select a winner among hundreds of high-quality entries. The winner, in the end chosen unanimously by the jury, was the entry Parallels by the Barcelona architects office MX_SI. The proposal becomes more impressive with greater familiarisation. The young architects, the Mexicans Mara Partida and Héctor Mendoza and the Slovenian Boris Bežan, emphasised in their project the very issues that the competition jury and the foundation board considered important. The extension is placed in an excellent location. It lets the old manor house dominate the landscape, yet converses with it as an equal with its contemporary architectural language. When the so-called Gösta extension to the Serlachius Museum opens in the summer of 14, our art foundation will be better able to serve the arts public. We will display our own collections more extensively and regularly display a variety of changing exhibitions. In connection with these, we will be able, thanks to the new facilities, to develop increasingly versatile services and products. Also with the new facilities our work with the collections will become more efficient. Laajuudestaan huolimatta se jättää Joenniemen kartanon maiseman hallitsijaksi, mutta ei myöskään piiloudu; rakennus on rohkeasti sitä mitä on. Yhtenäinen puukonstruktio sisä- ja ulkotiloissa luo laajennukselle sen itsenäisen luonteen. Kartanon kohdalla niiaaminen on mainio oivallus. Julkisivumateriaalina käytetyt plastiset puuelementit ovat kauniita, ja ne toistavat ympäröivän puuston rytmiä. Tiladramaturgia on mietitty ja toimii ensiluokkaisesti. Despite its size, the extension lets the manor house dominate the landscape, yet without hiding away the building boldly is what it is. The wooden construction, uniform in both the interior and exterior, creates the extension s own character. The curtsey towards the manor house is an excellent insight. All the design solutions are evidence of the authors versatile familiarity with the task. Moving the garage and the ice cellar is a bold and positive decision that both enables the placement of the extension within the Joenniemi yard milieu and gives the main entrance a natural location. Such a solution also creates a connection with the manor house. In the proposal the interior and exterior are in continuous dialogue. The wooden façade elements, characterised by their plasticity, are beautiful and repeat the rhythm of the surrounding trees. Parallels Parallels ferent spaces in the building create a successful synergy. They enable the arrangement of many different types of events. The utilization of the few exterior terraces is an excellent insight. In the summer also the long window wall of the festival hall opens to the outdoors. The spacious, light-filled office, with an exciting shape, is a joy. The maintenance of all the spaces works well and they can at some point in the future be extended. The south gable of the new building appears too tall in the Joenniemi park and comes too close to the shoreline. Sisäyhteyden välttämättömyys Joenniemeen on käännetty hyveeksi: siirryttäessä kerroksista toisiin poiketaan ulos laatikosta puiston puolelle rakennetuille lasirampeille. This is an excellent proposal that impresses with its clarity and beautiful exhibition spaces. The extension is situated west of the Joenniemi manor house and at a sufficient distance from it and the formal garden. The proposal is modest on the exterior, but with a rich interior a fresh exception among the competition entries. The necessity of an internal connection to the manor house has been turned into a virtue: when moving from one floor to another the visitor moves out from the box into the glazed ramps built on the park side. The spaces are generally well functioning and have been illustrated with beautiful scenic views. The funnel-like light shaft is a good idea, preserving the feeling of a connection from the lower floor to the sky above. The spatial organisation of the entrance floor should be changed so that the restaurant is placed in the middle of the building. The idea of the facades as a collage of different types of façade cladding could create an excellent artwork when implemented jointly with an artist. Thyra Thyra would also create the option of renewing the facade one piece at a time. The proposal is on the exterior like a large simplified wooden sculpture. If built it would bring a new layer to the Joenniemi manor house but also would be an attraction in itself. When assessing its feasibility, the glass ramps raise most questions. Sisääntuloaula ja juhlasali muodostavat toimivan tilakokonaisuuden. Ravintola on sijoitettu hyvin aulan ja pääsisäänkäynnin yhteyteen. Näyttelykierto on järjestettävissä toimivaksi. Päänäyttelytila ylimmässä kerroksessa olisi hienosti toteutettuna upea. Pääportaan, maanalaisen näyttelytilan ja kartanoon liittyvän uuden portaan muodostama tilasarja on kilpailun harvoja esimerkkejä siitä, miten rakennukset voidaan yhdistää tilallisesti toisiinsa. Kaikki työtilat saavat luonnonvaloa. Huoltoyhteys rakennuksen pohjoispuolelta ei häiritse museovieraita. Muotokieli ja materiaalivalinnat tukevat toisiaan, tosin polttoleikatut kuviot julkisivuissa ovat tarpeeton detalji. Serlachius-museo Göstan laajennus - yleinen kansainvälinen suunnittelukilpailu This is a delicate sculptural proposal in which the manor house receives a unique counterpart representing a new architecture. In the dialogue created between the manor house and the new building, the latter represents well the present day. The architecture, which plays with the roof forms, is unique, delicate and fun. The design of the lower part of the building is clearly modelled on Swiss contemporary architecture. The extension has been placed in the landscape so that the views from the approach road towards the manor house and the lake have been left open. The entrance lobby and the festival hall form a well-functioning spatial totality. The restaurant has been well placed in connection with the lobby and main entrance. The exhibition circulation route can be arranged so that it works well. The main exhibition space on the top floor would be superb when realised well. The spatial series formed by the main staircase, the underground exhibition space and the new staircase linking to the manor is one of the few examples in the competition of how the buildings can be spatially linked together. All work spaces receive natural light. The maintenance connection north of the building does not disturb the museum visitors. The form language and the material choices support each other, albeit the flame-cut patterns in the façade are an unnecessary detail. uusi saunarakennus/edustustilat 1.6 Ruth S. Ajatus metsän sekaan lomittuvasta ja valuvasta tilasta on runollisen kaunis. Tilat ovat näyttelynrakentajan ja -vieraan kannalta oivalliset. Kokonaisuus hahmottuu veistospihaa kierrellessä eikä eksymisen vaaraa ole. Tavoiteltu metsässä pujottelun tunne on taitavasti esitetyssä suunnitelmassa saavutettu erinomaisesti. Ehdotus on hurmaava ja kehityskelpoinen, mutta toteutuksen onnistuminen edellyttäisi huippuluokan rakennesuunnittelua ja -tekniikkaa. Kaarevan lasiseinän korvaaminen murtoviivalla tuhoaisi illuusion helposti, ja esitetty pilarittomuus juhlasalin itä- ja ravintolan kaakkoisseinillä ei onnistu. Lattia- ja kattolaattojen reunat julkisivuissa ovat vaikeita ja vaativia detaljeja, jotka säätelevät kokonaisilmettä hyvin merkittävästi. Arvioidut kustannukset ylittävät huomattavasti tavoitteen. The placement of the new building and its free form language are in harmony with each other. The idea of a flowing space interspersed in the forest has a poetic beauty. The spaces are excellent from the point of view of the exhibition builder and visitor. The totality can be easily perceived when walking around the sculpture garden, and there is no danger of getting lost. The feeling of zigzagging through the forest that has been sought in the proposal has been excellently achieved in the skilfully presented design. The proposal is charming and has a lot of potential for further development, but successful implementation would require top quality structural planning and techniques. Replacing the curved glass wall with a broken line would easily destroy the illusion, and the proposed lack of columns along the east wall of the festival hall and the south-east wall of the restaurant would not succeed. The edges of the floor and the ceiling panels visible in the glazed façade are difficult and demanding details which control to a large extent the overall impression. The proposal would require a lot of development work; for instance, with regard to the workspaces. The architecture of the proposal was met with strong differences of opinion among the jury. Ravintolapaviljonki on saapumissuunnasta käsin kartanorakennuksen edessä, mutta se on riittävän matala jättämään Joenniemen edelleen maiseman dominantiksi. Lasiset, eleettömät massat täydentävät hienosti kartanorakennuksen sisäänkäyntiaukion ja asettuvat osaksi jo olemassa olevien rakennusten mittakaavaa. Museon sydämen muodostava, perustasoa alempana sijaitseva veistospiha on ratkaisuna viehättävä, mutta Suomen oloissa hankalasti huollettavissa. Näyttelytiloilla on kullakin oma luonteensa, ja näyttelykierto toimii. Pienempään vaihtuvien näyttelyiden tilaan tulisi olla yhteys muualta kuin kokoelmatilojen kautta. Joenniemeen ja Taavetinsaareen sijoitettavat pienet paviljonkimaiset rakennukset aktivoivat hienolla tavalla koko Joenniemen puistoalueen museovieraiden käyttöön. Maanalainen huoltotunneli on ratkaisuna kallis ja lisää entisestään ehdotuksen suurta laajuutta. This is a beautiful, refined and extensively worked proposal that establishes Joenniemi as a place to experience art, architecture and nature. The restaurant pavilion is, in relation to the approach road, placed in front of the manor house, but is sufficiently low to still leave the latter as the dominant feature in the landscape. The glazed, simple masses excellently compliment the entrance courtyard of the manor house, and become a part of the scale of the already existing buildings. The sculpture garden, situated lower than the base level of the museum and which forms the heart of the museum, is an attractive solution but in Finnish conditions difficult to maintain. Each of the exhibition spaces has its own character and the exhibition circulation route works well. There should be a connection to the exhibition space for smaller changing exhibitions also from outside the main art collection spaces. The small pavilion-like buildings to be placed on Joenniemi and Taavetinsaari bring into use excellently the whole Joenniemi park area for the museum visitors. Laajennuksen toiminnallinen idea on nerokas: museovierasta kuljetetaan rakennuksen ulkokehällä, jossa hän voi kokea kauniita järvi- ja puistonäkymiä noustessaan ylemmäs näyttelykerroksiin kahta erillistä porrasta pitkin. Näyttelytilat sijaitsevat rungon sisällä, ja ne mahdollistavat erilaisten näyttelykiertojen rakentamisen joustavasti. Ravintola sijaitsee parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla avautuen terasseineen puisto- ja järvinäkymiin, ja se voi toimia myös muun museon ollessa suljettuna. Huoltoyhteys rakennuksen luoteispuolelta toimii hyvin. Maanalaisten tilojen jäsentely on jäänyt luonnosmaiseksi. Arkkitehtuuriltaan ajattoman rakennuksen korkeus tuntuu liian hallitsevalta pienipiirteisessä suomalaisessa maastossa. Ehdotuksen arkkitehtuuriin kohdistui voimakkaita näkemyseroja palkintolautakunnan sisällä. The entry Piparminttu is a skilfully executed and beautiful proposal. The cube-like building is assertively a unique new kind of art museum. Placing the spaces on five floors makes the ground surface area of the building fairly small, thus preserving the impressive trees in the park. It also leaves open the views between the Joenniemi manor house and the new building. The functional idea behind the extension is ingenious: the museum visitors move along the outer rim of the building where they can experience the beautiful lake and park views while rising higher towards the exhibition floors along two separate staircases. The exhibition spaces are situated at the centre of the building frame and allow for flexible exhibition routes. The restaurant is situated in the best possible way, opening up with its external terraces towards the park and lake views, and it can also operate when the rest of the museum is closed. The maintenance access is from the north-west side of the building. The layout of the underground spaces has remained somewhat sketchy. The height of the building, that has a timeless archi tecture, seems somewhat dominant in the small-scale Finnish landscape.
