In addition to its match against Fairfield, sixth-seeded USC will host San Diego State (23-7) and Saint Mary s College (17-10) in the other first-round match at 5pm on Thursday. The Aztecs are on a 12-match winning streak and finished the year with a share of their first-ever Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship to receive an at-large bid to their first NCAA tournament since 2001. The Gaels earned an at-large bid out of the West Coast Conference (WCC) and will make their sixth appearance in the tournament; the first since 2009. The other seeded teams in the Texas Regional are No. 3 Texas (23-4), No. 11 Kansas (25-6), and No. 14 Florida (25-4). The Texas Regional will be hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, December 7-8. The University of Louisville and the Louisville Sports Commission will host this year s NCAA Championship, in Louisville, Ky., at the KFC Yum! Center, December 13-15. FAIRFIELD & THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Stags are making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and their first since 2001. Fairfield had a string of five NCAA Tournament appearances between 1997-2001. The Stags have played their NCAA Tournament match in California twice. In 2000, the Stags travelled to Pepperdine University to face the host Waves. In 1999, Fairfield headed to the University of the Pacific in 1999 where they faced the University of Michigan in the first round. FAIRFIELD VS. USC Fairfield and USC have met just once in program history, with that meeting coming on November 20, 1999 in North Gym. The Trojans, then ranked 16th nationally, posted a 3-0 (15-6, 15-9, 15-10) victory over the Stags. In that contest, Joanne Saunders tallied 15 kills and eight digs while Jen McLaughlin posted 10 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Liz Bower also had a double-double with 11 digs and 31 assists while adding seven kills. SCOUTING USC The sixth-seeded Women of Troy will make their 22nd consecutive appearance in the annual tournament; the program s 30th overall. USC has won three NCAA titles: the first-ever in 1981, and backto-back in 2002 and 2003. The Trojans are 66-26 all-time in tournament matches. As a program, the Women of Troy hold six national crowns. The Trojans have advanced to the NCAA national semifinal match in each of the last two seasons and three times in the last five years. USC finished third in the Pac-12 standings, going 15-5 in league play and 27-5 overall to earn a national ranking of fourth. Freshman Samantha Bricio averages 4.05 kills and 2.39 digs per set while Katie Fuller averages 3.23 kills per frame. Sophomore setter Hayley Crone averages 10.91 assists per set while junior All-American libero Natalie Hagglund averages 5.09 digs per set. The Trojans are one of seven Pac-12 squads that will be appearing in the 2012 NCAA Championship. USC is hosting the first and second rounds of the Texas Regional. The Trojans have hosted firstand second-round matches in each of the last 10 years and has a 10-2 record in NCAA matches at the Galen Center. STREAKING STAGS Fairfield is currently on a 10-match winning streak, its longest since 2007. Six of those victories have been by 3-0 decision. The Stags had a pair of eight-match winning streaks during the 2011 campaign.

ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON At 22-8 this season, the Stags have notched their 12th 20-win season and the most victories since 2004. Head Coach Alija Pittenger has led Fairfield to three 20-win seasons in five years at the helm. GOING BACK TO CALI Four Stags will be playing in their home state of California, including senior Brianna Dixion, who is a native of Long Beach, and sophomore Camille Coffey, who is from Sierra Madre. Senior Kara Reis hails from Ramona while junior Hayley Moyer is from Riverside. STAG-TROY CONNECTIONS Future Trojan Sara Hughes, who signed an NLI with USC last week, is the sister of former Stag Lauren Hughes who donned a Fairfield uniform from 2007-10. FAIRFIELD & THE MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP Fairfield, the top-seed, captured the 2012 MAAC Championship by coming from behind to defeat Siena College, 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 15-11) on November 20 at Alumni Hall. It was only the second time this season in which the Stags dropped the first set and came back to win a match. The Stags defeated three-time defending champion Niagara University, 3-1, in the semifinals to advance to the final for the second consecutive season. The MAAC Championship was the Stags first crown in more than a decade. They had a string of MAAC Championships between 1997-2001. Since then, the Stags have gone 25-14 in MAAC Championship action. Eight of those losses have come in the MAAC Championship final, including five-straight between 2004-08. Senior Brianna Dixion was named the MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player, averaging 3.78 kills and 2.56 digs per set. Junior Rachel Romansky and sophomore Marilyn Peizer joined her on the All-Tournament Team. FAIRFIELD & THE MAAC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP The Stags won their 12th MAAC Regular Season Championship and their first since 2009 by going 15-3 in conference play this season. Fairfield won five-consecutive MAAC Regular Season titles from 1996-2000 and then won six straight between 2004-09. MAAC POSTSEASON ACCOLADES Head Coach Alija Pittenger was named the Anaconda Sports Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year after guiding the Stags to a MAAC Regular Season Championship. Junior Rachel Romansky was named the 2012 MAAC Setter of the Year and earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team. Senior Brianna Dixion and sophomore Caitlin Stapleton received their first-ever selections to the All-MAAC First Team. Dixion had previously earned three All-MAAC Second Team nods. Freshman Nicole Marzik earned a spot on the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Four Stags were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. SHUTTING THEM DOWN IN THREE Fourteen of the Stags 22 victories have been in the form of 3-0 decisions. GETTING STARTED The Stags are 20-2 this season when winning the first set and 18-2 when winning the second set. HOLDING THEM DOWN Twenty-one of the Stags last 23 opponents have recorded an attack percentage of.200 or lower. Marist College was the lowest, hitting.011 on September 26. Quinnipiac University had the lowest kill total with just 15 on September 5. HEATING UP Over the last seven matches, senior Brianna Dixion is averaging 4.15 kills and 3.231 digs per set, including five double-doubles. In addition, she has recorded double-digit kills in 11 consecutive matches and in 12 of the last 14 matches. BLOCK IT OFF Junior Hayley Moyer has recorded at least one block in 14 consecutive matches and in 26 of the 29 matches she s played this season. Reis broke the program record for career digs against Marist College on October 7 at Alumni Hall. Entering the match tied with former Stag Lindsey Lee for the career lead, Reis tallied her record-setting 1,675th dig on the Stags third point of the match. Reis currently has 1,938 career digs and is Fairfield s career leader in digs per set (4.40). For the season, Reis has recorded 582 digs, which sets the single season record. The previous record was 543 set by Lauren Laramore in 2004. Reis posted 34 digs against Iona on October 26 to tie Fairfield s single match record. Brandi Higa set the program standard against Towson on September 13, 2008. Against Iona on October 27, Reis posted 30 digs, which is the sixth-most in Fairfield single match history. She served 20 consecutive points against Marist College on October 7 at Alumni Hall. Reis entered the second set with the Stags trailing 6-5. When she was done, Fairfield had toppled Marist, 25-6. The streak was the second-longest in NCAA single match history. The record for most consecutive points is 22 which was set by Chelsea Gebben of Mercer College on October 13, 2006. MOVING ON UP Senior Brianna Dixion has steadily moved up the career kills chart this season and stands fifth alltime at Fairfield with 1,282. Former Stag Lindsey Lee is fourth with 1,387. A HELPING HAND Junior Rachel Romansky made a bit of history herself against Marist College on October 7 at Alumni Hall as she tallied her 3,000th career assist becoming the third Stag in program history to reach the mark. In the MAAC Championship Semifinal on November 17, Romansky surpassed Nicole Arzillo for second all-time at Fairfield and currently has 3,506 assists. Liz Bower set the career record with 5,213 assists between 1996 and 1999. STILL GOING Junior Rachel Romansky has appeared in 341 of Fairfield s 342 sets played since 2010. She did not play in the opening set against Tulane on September 10, 2010 and since then she has appeared in 301 consecutive frames. It was the second time this season in which the Stags posted 100 digs and the 16th time in program history for the feat. TAKE ME HOME Fairfield went 12-0 in Alumni Hall this season and played six-straight at home entering the NCAA Tournament. The Stags played better at home in 2012, averaging 14.65 kills and 20.90 digs with 82 blocks and 60 aces. Opponents who ventured into Alumni Hall average just 10.86 kills on.127 hitting and 17.81 digs with 45 aces. KILLIN IT The Stags recorded a season-high 76 kills versus Iona College on October 26. HOT HITTING Fairfield posted a season-best attack percentage of.398 against Loyola University Maryland on November 4. The Stags recorded 44 kills and committed a season-low nine attack errors. DOUBLE-DOUBLE THE FUN Four Stags posted double-doubles in Fairfield s 3-2 victory over Iona on October 26. Senior Brianna Dixion posted a double-double with 19 kills and a season-high 17 digs. Junior Rachel Romansky posted her fifth consecutive double-double and 14th of the season with 45 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Carsen Mata had her first career double-double with a career-high 19 assists and 15 digs. Freshman Nicole Marzik notched her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. JUST SEVEN Fairfield held Saint Peter s to just seven points in the first set on October 20, marking the second time this season in which the Stags held an opponent to single digits. Fairfield held Marist to just six points last month. Since 2001 when rally scoring began, the Stags have held opponents to just seven points on two other occasions. The first occurrence came on September 1, 2001 in a 30-7 victory over the University at Albany. The second time, Fairfield recorded a 30-7 victory over Siena College on October 15, 2005. HALF DOZEN Fairfield held Marist to just six points in the second set of their match on October 7. It is the fewest points recorded by an opponent in a non-deciding set dating back to 2001 when rally scoring began. PUT FIVE ON IT Five Stags recorded double-digit kills against Siena College on October 6. Caitlin Stapleton and Brianna Dixion led the way with 12 kills apiece while Camille Coffey, Hayley Moyer, and Lindsay Weaver each had 10 kills. STREAKING STAGS After starting the 2012 campaign with an 0-5 record, the Stags won seven consecutive matches from September 1-16. 1,000 STRONG Senior Brianna Dixion became the 11th Stag in program history to register 1,000 kills in her career on September 7 against Dartmouth College. Her historic kill came in the third set when she gave the Stags a 1-0 lead and finished the match with 12 kills. SMOKIN ACES The Stags tallied 12 aces against Quinnipiac on September 5. It was the most since the 2009 season when Fairfield registered 12 aces against Rider. BLOCK PARTY Fairfield put up 12 blocks against the University of Central Florida on September 9 and did it again at Siena College on September 19. The Stags posted double-digit blocks five times in 2012. TOP BLOCKS Junior Hayley Moyer notched a career-high eight total blocks against UCF on September 9. Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton notched a career-high eight total blocks at Siena on September 19.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN The Stags played nine of their first 10 matches on the road, appearing in three tournaments during that stretch. After a two match homestand to open MAAC play, Fairfield played its next five on the road. After going home for another pair of MAAC matches, the Stags had four on the road. Fairfield closed out the regular season with five home matches. FAIRFIELD IN HOME OPENERS Dating back to 1995, the Stags are 15-3 in home openers. In 2009, Fordham handed the Stags their first loss in a home opener since Sept. 25, 2005 against Albany. STAGS IN SEASON OPENERS Fairfield is 15-13 in season openers since 1985 and has captured five of its last nine including the 3-1 victory over Eastern Michigan to start 2009. FAIRFIELD IN ALUMNI HALL The Stags are 67-7 in Alumni Hall over the course of the last seven regular seasons, including this season s 12-0 record. The Stags went 8-1 in Alumni Hall during 2011, 10-1 in Alumni Hall in 2009, a perfect 10-0 in 2008, 9-1 in 2007, and 11-1 in 2006. In 2010, the Stags lost two matches at Alumni, October 30-31, marking the first time Fairfield lost more than one home match since 2005. FAIRFIELD VS. THE MAAC IN ALUMNI HALL Since 2003, Fairfield has a 75-5 overall record against the MAAC in Alumni Hall. During the 2007 MAAC Championship final, Siena handed Fairfield its first loss to a league opponent in Alumni Hall since Oct. 8, 2003. Niagara and Canisius made history October 30-31, 2010, when the two teams defeated the Stags and picked up their first-ever victories in Alumni Hall. The losses also marked the only time since 1992 in which Fairfield dropped back-to-back matches to a MAAC opponent at home. FAIRFIELD IN MAAC MATCHES Against MAAC opponents in the regular season, Fairfield averaged 14.78 kills and 20.17 digs per set against MAAC opponents this season. League opposition averaged just 11.08 kills and 17.02 digs per set. Fairfield out-blocked MAAC foes 126-92 and held a 79-64 advantage in service aces. FAIRFIELD VS. Dixion paced the Stags offensive attack in sweeps of Niagara and Canisius. The senior averaged 5.50 points per set, as she hit.315 over the weekend. Dixion posted a double-double in the win over Niagara, with 14 kills and 14 digs. She then recorded a match-best 18 kills in the win on Sunday, hitting.429 for the match. Dixion had six digs on Sunday to give her 3.33 per set for the week. She also had a solo block versus Canisius and an assist in the win over Niagara. Reis averaged 7.83 digs per set in the sweeps of Niagara and Canisius at Alumni Hall. The senior had 47 total digs in the victories, with 24 in the win over Niagara and 23 more against Canisius. Reis added an ace in each of the matches, for two on the week, and also had seven assists, more than one per set for the weekend. MAAC LIBERO OF THE WEEK 11/5 Senior Kara Reis was named the MAAC Libero of the Week on November 5 after averaging 7.17 digs per set. Reis posted 43 digs and seven assists to help Fairfield to a pair of 3-0 victories and extend their winning streak to six matches. In the 3-0 victory over Rider University on November 3, Reis recorded 25 digs, a perfect reception percentage, and three assists. In the Stags 3-0 victory over Loyola the following day, she had 18 digs and four assists. ALIJA PITTENGER HEAD COACH FAIRFIELD RECORD (YRS): 94-63 (5) MAAC RECORD (YRS): 73-17 (5) CAREER RECORD (YRS): 94-63 (5) The 2012 campaign marks Alija Pittenger s fifth season as the head coach of the Fairfield University volleyball program. Pittenger has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons. In 2011, Pittenger led the Stags to a 20-10 overall record, a 16-2 league mark, and a spot in the MAAC Championship final. Pittenger also coached the 2011 MAAC Setter of the Year, Rachel Romansky, and the MAAC Rookie of the Year, Caitlin Stapleton. During her first season at the helm in 2008, she guided the Stags to a 20-13 overall record, a MAAC Regular Season Championship, and an appearance in the MAAC Championship Final. She followed that up by leading the Stags to a MAAC Regular Season Championship and a 19-12 record in 2009. Pittenger came to Fairfield after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. During her stint with the Panthers, she helped guide them to a Big East title and to two-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2006, she coached three Panthers to All-Big East honors in addition to a Big East Libero of the Year award and an AVCA All-America honoree. Prior to Pitt, she spent 2002 at Southern Indiana, where she helped the Screaming Eagles to a conference title, a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and a first round victory. Pittenger also was an undergraduate assistant coach at Michigan, her alma mater, in 2001. As a collegiate player with the Wolverines, Pittenger was a four-time letterwinner as an outside hitter and setter. She helped Michigan to its first top-25 national ranking in 2000 and to three NCAA Championship Tournaments in 1997, 1999, and 2000. Pittenger finished her senior year as the team leader in digs and was second on the Wolverines in kills. She graduated from Michigan in December 2001 with a bachelor's degree in movement science. DID YOU KNOW? As a junior at the University of Michigan in 1999, Alija Pittenger competed against Fairfield in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines stopped the Stags 3-0 (15-8, 15-7, 15-7) in Stockton, Calif. In that contest, Pittenger had a match-high 17 digs and seven kills on.438 hitting along with two blocks. SARAH GRELLA ASSISTANT COACH Sarah Grella is in her fifth season as an assistant coach at Fairfield. A native of Stratford, Grella came to Stags with coaching experience at both the youth and collegiate level. She spent time as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Providence College, and most recently at Sacred Heart University. She also served as the head coach of the Connecticut Juniors 17 club program. Grella was a four-year starter at Providence. As an outside hitter with the Friars, she earned Big East All- Rookie honors in 1998 and was a two-time All-Big East selection. She graduated with six program records to her credit. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor s degree in history. At Bunnell High School, she led the team to two Connecticut state championship games and was a fourtime all-conference and three-time all-state selection. She was named Connecticut's Gatorade Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and New England s Gatorade Player of the Year in 1997. She holds six school records and is ranked in the National High School Record Book in four categories. She was inducted into the Bunnell High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 and to the Connecticut Women s Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2006.

The setter recorded 99 assists (12.38/s) and 25 digs (3.12/s) along with seven kills, three aces, and four total blocks. In the Stags 3-0 win at Saint Peter s on October 20, Romansky assisted on 45 of the Stags 52 kills on the day and tallied 14 digs. She did a little bit of everything in the Stags 3-2 victory at Manhattan College on October 21. She posted her fourth consecutive double-double and her 13th of the season with 54 assists and 11 digs. Romansky also added six kills on.375 hitting, two aces, and tied a career-high with four total blocks. MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK/ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton was named the MAAC Player of the Week on October 8 and the ECAC Player of the Week on October 9 for her efforts against Siena and Marist Colleges. Stapleton averaged 3.86 kills per set on.477 hitting while recording six total blocks in those two matches. The ECAC Player of the Week selection was the Stags first since 2006 when Jazmin Pa akaula earned it. MAAC LIBERO OF THE WEEK 10/8 Senior Kara Reis was named the MAAC Libero of the Week on October 8 for her efforts against Siena and Marist Colleges. Reis averaged 6.29 digs per set, broke Fairfield s career digs record, and at the service line, nearly broke an NCAA single match record in two matches. MAAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK 8/27; 9/4; 9/10 Freshman Nicole Marzik was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week in three consecutive weeks. She earned the first MAAC Rookie of the Week on August 27 after averaging 2.38 kills, 2.38 points, and 1.62 digs per set at the Duke Invitational. In her collegiate debut against defending Horizon League Champion Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marzik had two kills in one set of action. Against ACC foe Duke, Marzik played all three sets, tallying seven kills and two digs. Marzik made her first collegiate start against William & Mary and recorded her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. She also had a perfect reception percentage in 13 attempts. Marzik won it again on September 4 after averaging 3.00 kills and 3.14 points per set at the UConn Classic. She capped off the tournament with a career-best 13 kills on.455 hitting against Dartmouth. She earned the honor a third time on September 10 after recording 27 kills, 29 points, and 22 digs in a 4-0 week for the Stags. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS Senior Brianna Dixion was named the Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational Tournament MVP while junior Hayley Moyer and sophomore Caitlin Stapleton joined her on the All-Tournament team. Dixion averaged 3.17 kills during the tournament while Moyer averaged 2.33 kills on.364 hitting and 1.25 blocks per set along with five aces. Stapleton averaged 2.50 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. Junior Rachel Romansky was named to the UConn Class All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.20 assists and 2.67 digs along with eight kills and a block. Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton was named to the Duke Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.40 kills and 1.40 digs per set along with four total blocks. Stapleton capped off the tournament with a career day, picking up 19 kills and nine digs against William & Mary. MAAC PRESEASON POLL The Fairfield University volleyball team was picked to finish first in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) according to a poll of the league s coaches. Fairfield topped the poll with 97 points while three-time defending champion Niagara University received 80 points to finish second. Manhattan College finished third with 73 points. Rounding out the poll was Siena College (69), Canisius College (63), Marist College (60), Iona College (45), Loyola University Maryland (31), Rider University (21), and Saint Peter's University (11). PRESEASON ALL-MAAC Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton and junior Rachel Romansky were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. It is the first time since 2009 in which a Stag has appeared on the Preseason All-MAAC Team and the first time since 2007 in which Fairfield has had multiple selections. Stapleton was named the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year and garnered All-MAAC Second Team and MAAC All- Rookie Team accolades after an outstanding debut for the Stags. Romansky was named the 2011 MAAC Setter of the Year and picked up All-MAAC Second Team honors. During her sophomore season, she appeared in every set while averaging 10.76 assists. STAGS NCAA HISTORY 1997 Postseason Bid The Stags earned its first-ever MAAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament bid in 1997. Marching through the MAAC regular season with a 9-0 record, gave Fairfield the number one seed in the MAAC Tournament. The first round of The MAAC Tournament featured the Stags disposing of Siena by a score of 15-13, 15-10, 15-9. The conference final was a showdown with St. Peter s. Fairfield prevailed by a score of 15-6, 15-6, 15-4. Winning the MAAC advanced the Stags to the NCAA Tournament, where they were matched up against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Lack of postseason experience was prevalent, as the Stags fell 2-15, 2-15, 8-15. Despite the loss, the Stags had the most successful season in school history to date, with a 25-10 record. 1998 Postseason Bid For the second consecutive year, the Stags won the MAAC Tournament Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. The Stags ran off a MAAC record 27 straight wins, and ended the season with a 35-2 record. Once again, the Stags clinched the MAAC regular season crown with a 9-0 record. All it took was four matches for the Stags to dispose of the MAAC competition, earning the MAAC Championship. The first-round of the NCAA Tournament was held at Penn State University, where the Stags fell to Clemson 3-0. Fairfield continued their rise to prominence, finishing the season with a number 24 ranking in the RPI rankings. 1999 Postseason Bid The Stags raced through the MAAC regular season and Tournament to earn their third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. 1999 saw the Stags finish with a 30-4 record, which included winning streaks of 12 and 18 games. Once again, they ran through the MAAC competition in the regular season, earning a 9-0 record. They defeated St. Peter s by a score of 15-5, 15-17, 15-5, 15-10, to be crowned the MAAC Tournament champion. From there they went to the NCAA Tournament, which was held at University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The Stags fell to the University of Michigan by a score of 15-8, 15-7, 15-7. Despite the loss, the season ended on a happy note when the Stags received an RPI of 32. 2000 Postseason Bid A dynasty was brewing as the Stags once again took home the MAAC Tournament title and earned yet another NCAA Tournament berth, for the fourth straight year. The Stags completed another perfect season in the MAAC, winning all 11 of their conference matches by a combined score of 33-1. When it came time for the NCAA Tournament, the Stags were shipped all the way out to California, for a match-up with the host Pepperdine. Fairfield experienced an NCAA first, as they were able to win a game, 16-14, against the Waves. They nearly picked up another game, but dropped the fourth one 17-15. Once again, the Stags won over 20 matches, compiling a 26-7 overall record. 2001 Postseason Bid For the first time since 1996, the Stags lost a regular season match in the MAAC. The loss came to St. Peter s, who ended up taking the regular season crown. Fairfield finished in second place, and was given the number two seed in the MAAC Tournament. They ended up avenging their regular season loss in the MAAC Championship match, when they defeated St. Peter s by a score of 30-26, 30-24, 25-30, 30-18. For the fifth consecutive year, the Stags were a part of the NCAA Tournament. They traveled to Penn State University, where they squared off against the host Nittany Lions. The Stags fought hard but fell by a score of 30-21, 30-24, 30-24. Fairfield ended the season with a record of 19-13.
