2 Kuinka ohjata tulevaa kielenopettajaa? Näkökulmia opettajaopiskelijoiden kertomuksista Maria Kautonen Tässä artikkelissa esittelen pro gradu -tutkimustani (Kautonen 2016), joka käsittelee työn merkitystä tulevien kielenopettajien identiteetille. Tämän lisäksi olen tutkimuksessani selvittänyt, mistä ja millaista ohjausta kielten opettajaopiskelijat ovat saaneet opettajan ammattiin liittyen ja millaista ohjausta he kokevat vielä tarvitsevansa. Perinteisesti opettajan ammatti on mielletty kutsumusammatiksi, joka määrittää voimakkaasti harjoittajaansa. Tämä näkemys on kuitenkin muutoksessa koulumaailman ja sitä ympäröivän yhteiskunnan muuttumisen myötä. Miten näkemys opettajan työstä palkkatyönä muiden joukossa on rantautunut tulevien kielenopettajien ajatuksiin ja kuinka ohjaus voi tukea opettajaopiskelijoita opettajan työnkuvan mukanaan tuomissa haasteissa? Mitä työ oikein merkitsee meille? Mikä sä haluat olla isona? Mikä on sun unelma-ammatti? Mikä on sellainen ammatti, johon sulla on tosi kova innostus ja jota haluaisit tehdä koko loppuelämäsi ajan? Mikä on sellainen työ, että heräät aamulla iloisena, kun pääset taas töihin? Nämä ovat kysymyksiä, jotka usein ovat lähtökohtana ammatinvalinnassa ja uraohjauksessa. Näitä kysymme jo aivan pieniltä lapsilta, sillä työ koetaan keskeiseksi elämän osa-alueeksi Suomessa. Työtä pidetään pelkän toimeentulon takaamisen lisäksi tärkeänä elämänalueena monella muullakin tapaa: identiteetin rakennusaineena, 1 / 6
3 itsensä toteuttamisena, yksilöä yhteiskuntaan kiinnittävänä voimana, arjen rytmittäjänä ja oman hyvinvoinnin edistäjänä (Pöyliö & Suopajärvi 2005, 31). Työ saa kuitenkin erilaisia merkityksiä yksilön elämänvaiheista riippuen, esimerkiksi ura ja perhe saattavat olla vaihdellen etusijalla eri ajankohtina. Työn merkityksen on huomattu myös vaihtelevan eri ammattikuntien välillä; toiset mieltävät työn voimakkaammin elämän tarkoitukseksi, kun taas toiset näkevän työn pelkkänä elannon lähteenä (Haavisto 2010; Rantanen & Räikkönen 2010). Arkiajattelussamme opettajan ammatti mielletään usein juuri kutsumustyöksi, joka leimaa voimakkaasti harjoittajansa koko olemusta. Lindénin (2010) mukaan tämä ajattelutapa on kuitenkin murroksessa: ajatus opettajan työstä kutsumusammattina on muuttumassa entistä vieraammaksi ja opettajankin työstä alkaa hiljalleen tulla tekijälleen vain työtä. Aiemmassa pro gradu -tutkimuksessani (Kautonen 2014) selvisi, että tulevat kielenopettajat ajautuvat kielenopettajan opintoihin hyvin erilaisista syistä osa hyvinkin tietoisesti ja osa taas sattuman kautta. Tämän vuoksi halusin selvittää, kuinka opettajaopiskelijoiden työlle antamat merkitykset eroavat toisistaan ja kuinka Lindénin (2010) kuvaama ajattelutavan muutos on heijastunut heidän ajatuksiinsa. Aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa on usein keskitytty opettajien ammatillisiin identiteetteihin; millainen opettaja olen, millainen haluan olla ja miten toimin luokkahuoneessa. Kokonaisvaltainen näkökulma opettajuuden ja muun henkilökohtaisen elämän ja identiteetin yhdistämiseen taas tuntuu jääneen vähemmälle huomiolle. Tutkimukseni (Kautonen 2016) tarkoituksena onkin ollut haastaa alussa kuvaamiani esimerkkikysymyksiä, joiden kautta kuvaamme työtä ja ammatinvalintaa arkipuheessa, jotta ohjausta työhön ja ammatinvalintaan osattaisiin kehittää jatkossa. Osataksemme ohjata muita ammatinvalintaan liittyvissä kysymyksissä, eikö meidän pitäisi ensin tietää, onko työ yhtä tärkeää kaikille ja yhtä keskeinen osa omaa identiteettiä? Mitä tulevat kielenopettajat ajattelevat opettajan työstä? Selvittääkseni sitä, mitä tulevat opettajat ajattelevat opettajan työn merkityksestä heille itselleen ja kuinka heille tarjottavaa ohjausta voisi kehittää, tutkin kielenopettajaksi opiskelevien ajatuksia aiheesta (Kautonen 2016). Tutkimukseen osallistui 27 eri kielten opettajiksi opiskelevaa yliopisto-opiskelijaa. Tutkimusaineistona käytin opiskelijoiden kirjoittamia n. 1-2 sivun mittaisia kirjoitelmia, narratiiveja, joissa opiskelijat kuvasivat itselleen tärkeitä asioita tutkittaviin teemoihin liittyen. Aineiston analysoin laadullisesti sisällönanalyysin ja teemoittelun kautta. 2 / 6
4 Pelkän kutsumuksen lisäksi opiskelijat kuvasivat opettajan työtä yhteisen hyvän eteen työskentelynä, toimeentulon lähteenä, itsensä kehittämisenä, omien kykyjen hyödyntämisenä sekä yhteisön jäsenyytenä. Kutsumusta saatettiin kokea kielenopettamiseen tai sitten pelkästään kieliin tai opettamiseen. Monet opiskelijat kokivat opettajan työn määrittävän pitkälti myös vapaa-aikaa, joko oman identiteetin keskeisenä osana tai muuten aikaavievänä ja ajatuksissa pyörivänä puuhana. Tärkeä huomio on se, että opiskelijoiden kirjoitelmissa tuotiin esille huolta ja jopa ahdistusta siitä, että opettajan ammatti seuraa vapaa-ajalle tahtomattakin. Ja mikäli näin ei olisi, koki osa opiskelijoista olevansa huonoja opettajia ja sopimattomia harjoittamaan ammattia. Huomioitavaa tutkimusaineistossa on myös se, että monet opiskelijat kokivat opettajan ammattiin ja ammatinvalintaan liittyvän ohjauksen jollain tapaa puutteelliseksi ja riittämättömäksi. Lisäksi saatu ohjaus tuntui keskittyneen nimenomaan ammatinvalintaan ja hakuprosesseihin eikä niinkään opettajan työhön ja muuhun elämään. Tärkeässä roolissa ohjauksen ja tuen antajina korostuivat koulujen ja muiden opinahjojen tarjoaman ohjauksen sijaan lähipiirin ihmiset, opiskelijatoverit sekä opetusharjoitteluja ohjaavat opettajat, joilta saatiin sekä suoraa palautetta omasta opettajuudesta että tärkeää keskusteluseuraa ammattiin liittyvissä pohdinnoissa. Myös opintojen loppuvaiheessa sekä valmistumisen jälkeen kielenopettajat tarvitsevat vielä ohjausta. Lisää ohjausta opiskelijat kaipasivat sekä yliopisto-opinnoista että työelämästä. Ennen kaikkea opiskelijat toivoivat lisää käytännön vinkkejä ja kokemusta opettamiseen sekä kokonaisvaltaiseen elämänhallintaan ja ajankäyttöön. Nämä eivät ole mitään pieniä teemoja, varsinkaan jos aiemmin olemme kuvitelleet yliopistosta valmistumisen tarkoittavan kaikkien työelämässä tarvittavien taitojen hallintaa. Kuinka puhumme työstä jatkossa ja ohjaamme tulevia opettajia? Tutkimukseni tuloksista on tärkeää nostaa esille se, kuinka erilaisia tulevat kielenopettajat ovat yksilöinä kaikesta näennäisestä homogeenisyydestä huolimatta. Heillä on toisistaan melko paljonkin poikkeavia näkemyksiä opettajan työstä ja siitä, kuinka suuri rooli työllä on heidän omassa elämässään. Tällä tulisi olla vaikutusta opettajankoulutuksen lisäksi koulujen tarjoamaan opinto-ohjaukseen, ura- ja ammatinvalinnanohjaukseen sekä ylipäänsä siihen, miten suhtaudumme kutsumusammatteihin ja miten puhumme työn merkityksestä. Opettajankoulutuksen tehtävä yhdessä opetettavan aineen opintojen kanssa on 3 / 6
5 valmistaa kielten opettajaksi opiskelevaa työelämää varten opettamalla sekä ainekompetenssia että opettamisen taitoja. Tutkimustulosteni perusteella onkin muotoutunut konkreettisia ehdotuksia opiskelijoiden tukemiseen ja heidän tarpeidensa kohtaamiseen yliopistokoulutuksen eri tasoilla. Näistä ehdotuksista hyötyvät erityisesti opettajien pedagogisten aineopintojen järjestäjät, koulujen harjoittelujaksoja ohjaavat opettajat sekä opettajien kieliopintoja järjestävät oppiaineet yliopistolla, joiden tulisi: huomioida opiskelijoiden tilanteet kokonaisvaltaisemmin kuin vain luokkahuoneen sisällä; mitä työ merkitsee yksilön omassa elämässä ja kuinka suuren osan yksilö haluaa antaa sen viedä elämästään. huomioida monen opiskelijan kokema epävarmuus ammatinvalinnastaan, huoli ammatin aikaavievästä ja kuormittavasta luonteesta ja antaa tilaa siitä keskusteluun sekä keinoja sen selättämiseen. tarjota lisää opettamisen konkreettisia keinoja, joita opiskelijat voisivat hyödyntää myöhemminkin työssään, esimerkiksi alumnien ja valmistuneiden opettajien avulla selvittää työn vaatimuksia ja keinoja selviytyä työkuormasta sekä aikatauluttamisen ongelmista. Monet opiskelijat kuvasivat ennen yliopisto-opintoja saadun ammattiin liittyvän ohjauksen olleen hyvin puutteellista. Uraohjaukseen panostaminen onkin tarpeen korkeakouluopintojen lisäksi myös muissa opinahjoissa ja ohjausta tarjoavissa organisaatioissa. Keskeistä on tarjota lisää tukea ammatinvalintaan sekä laajentaa näkökulmaa eri ammatteihin liittyen. Tärkeää on selvittää, millaisen työn yksilö itse haluaa pitääkö työn olla kutsumusammatti vai riittääkö ihan ok työ, jolla pystyy elättämään itsensä ja toteuttamaan muita itselle tärkeämpiä haaveita. Mikäli työn kokonaisvaltaisesta roolista yksilön elämässä keskusteltaisiin enemmän ja sitä käsiteltäisiin jollakin tapaa ohjauksessa, voitaisiin tällä ehkä välttää myöhemmässä vaiheessa ilmaantuvaa opiskelijoiden tyytymättömyyttä joko opiskelualan valintaan tai vielä myöhemmin työpaikan valintaan ja näin edesauttaa työssäjaksamista. Kuten tämä tutkimus (Kautonen 2016) sekä aiempi pro gradu tutkielmani (Kautonen 2014) osoittivat, edes kutsumusammattina pidetyn opettajuuden taustalla ei läheskään kaikilla opettajaopiskelijoilla ole kutsumus nimenomaan opettajan ammattiin, vaan 4 / 6
6 esimerkiksi kiinnostus kieliin itsessään. Osa opiskelijoista taas näkee työn vain työnä ja haluaa pitää työn selvästi erossa vapaa-ajasta. Kuitenkin ammatinvalinnan ohjauksessa ja uraohjauksessa puhutaan edelleen usein kutsumusammatista, jota jokaisen tulisi tavoitella tulevaisuutta suunnitellessaan. Ajatus koko elämää määrittävästä kutsumusammatista tuntuu lisäävän työhön liittyvää stressiä, mikä osalla tutkimuksen opiskelijoista ilmeni huonommuudentunteena ja epävarmuutena ammatinvalinnan suhteen. Koska tällainen puhe- ja ajattelutapa tuntuu luovan monille liian suuria paineita työelämästä, on tärkeää muuttaa tapaa, jolla puhumme uravalinnoista, ammateista ja työn merkityksestä. Mutta kuinka innostaa pieniä lapsia ja nuoria eri ammatteihin ja työelämään luomatta liikoja paineita ammatinvalintaan liittyen? Ammatillinen kehittyminen ja työyhteisön jäseneksi kasvaminen eivät lopu koulusta valmistumiseen. Ennen valmistumista tarjottava ohjaus ei ole itsessään riittävää vastaamaan opiskelijoiden tarpeisiin myöskään tutkimukseeni osallistuneiden opettajaopiskelijoiden mukaan. Opettajaopiskelijat toivoivatkin työpaikoilla tarjottavan tarpeeksi tukea ja neuvoja työelämään siirryttäessä. Erilaisissa työyhteisöissä olisikin tarpeen pohtia, tarjoammeko tätä kaivattua tukea uusille työntekijöille; tuemmeko aloittavia opettajia ensimmäisten kuukausien, jopa vuosien aikana; jaammeko heille konkreettisia neuvoja ja vinkkejä siitä, miten voisi opettaa ja miten pitää huolta omasta jaksamisesta? Pelkän opettajankoulutuksen ja uraohjauksen arvostelun sijaan sekä vastavalmistuneen että pidempään työelämässä olleen opettajan olisikin hyvä kysyä itseltään, mitä tukea minä voin tarjota muille työyhteisöni jäsenille sekä työhön että henkilökohtaiseen elämään liittyen.
