Place: D218 To whom: This seminar is specifically meant for the doctoral students who have already started to produce dissertation text. The Research Seminar of the Graduate School is supplementary education that does not substitute the postgraduate seminar of the student s major subject. Learning outcomes: The seminar supports researchers especially in issues of argumentation and scientific writing. It also helps to understand methodological and ethical issues and problems related to scientific research. After having completed this seminar, students will have made progress in writing their doctoral theses and will understand methodological and ethical issues and problems related to scientific research. Content: This research seminar offers a forum for the doctoral students of the universities functioning in Vaasa to present and develop their own research. In the seminar sessions, papers related to the doctoral students' dissertation works are discussed. In the first meeting, the schedule for paper presentations and acting as an opponent is settled. In each seminar meeting, two or three papers are discussed. Osa A: Eeettinen teoria ja tutkimusetiikan merkitys: Tämä osa keskittyy kehittämään kykyä tunnistaa ja analyisoida tutkimuseettiisiä kysymyksiä. Tässä osiossa opiskelijaa ohjataan katsomaan tutkimuseettisiä kysymyksiä eri näkökulmista käyttäen eettisiä teorioita sekä vertailemaan kuinka teoriat soveltuvat sekä oman tutkimuksen että tutkimusalan eettisten kysymysten ymmärtämiseen. Osa B: Tutkimussuunnittelu: Tämä osa keskittyy tutkimuksen suunnitteluvaiheen eettisiin kysymyksiin. Näitä ovat esimerkiksi tiedonhankinta ja -hallinta, eturistiriidat, eettiset luvat tai eettiset arviot, datan omistaminen, yhteistyö, tutkimusrahoituksen hakeminen sekä tutkimustulosten julkaisemisen suunnittelu. Opiskelijat lähestyvät tätä suunnitteluvaihetta eettisistä kysymyksistä käsin ja oppivat tunnistamaan eettisiä kysymyksiä sekä omassa tutkimuksessaan, että tutkimuksessa yleisesti. Osa C: Tutkimustyö:

5 5/22 Tämä osa keskittyy varsinaisen tutkimustyön eettisiin kysymyksiin. Näitä ovat esimerkiksi tutkimustiedon kerääminen, yhteistyön ja avoimuuden määrittely, ohjaus, sekä vääristely ja sepittäminen vilpin eri muotoina. Opiskelijat analysoivat näitä kysymyksiä niiden ehkäisemisen näkökulmasta omassa työssään sekä tutkimustyössä yleisemmin sekä tutkimuseettisten ohjeiden mukaisesti että myös eettisten periaatteiden kautta. Osa D: Tutkimustulosten julkaisu: Tämä viimeinen osa keskittyy tutkimustulosten julkaisemiseen liittyviin kysymysiin. Tähän osioon kuuluu eettisiä kysymyksiä liittyen plagiointiin ja anastamiseen, kirjoittajuuteen, vertaisarvointiin sekä tutkimusfoorumin valintaan. Opiskelijat lähtevät oman tutkimuksensa näkökulmasta ja laajentavat ajattelua tutkimustulosten julkaisemiseen tutkimusyhteisön yhteisenä eettisenä kysymyksenä. Learning Outcomes: 1. To be able to critically analyze what is an effective framing and positioning of an article in terms of academic writing. 2. Identify how to present research in a written form. 3. Be familiar with some emerging trends in qualitative and quantitative research. 4. Critically evaluate own and others writing. 5. Be familiar with examples of what can considered to be recognized approaches of writing articles. 6. Writing one conceptual/qualitative/quantitative article that have the scientific standard to be presented at an academic conference or published in an academic journal. The goal is that in the second part of the course there would be already clearly advanced, preferably a preliminary full version of the paper. Content: This course is organized as a forum for discussing and improving participants reading and writing of research articles. During the process, the goal with the course is to facilitate participants to help each other to better write and recommend sharp advices about clear and effective writing. Selected texts cover a variation of readings about theory, method, the review process and how to get cited, but also a set of existing research articles ( normal research papers) which are analyzed at the seminar, focusing of structure, approach and content. Participants will be guided through writing strategies of others, get feedback on own

6 articles and give response on texts of other members of the forum. During the course, aspects covering formulating interesting research problems, carefully thought of research designs and methods, trends, and common reasons for rejection will be discussed and analyzed. We discuss research articles from the role of being an author and from being an editor or a reviewer. Examination is based upon active participation at research seminars and by writing a research paper during the course. Each participant is expected to verbally present a rough topic of which they plan to write the paper about for the first seminar. Pre-assignment: Every participant should prepare a draft of the planned article (at least four to six pages long hopefully longer) where you should present at least the following issues: Title of the paper, some background for the article and why this topic is of interest, the purpose of your paper, expected contribution of the paper, key issues and sources related to the theoretical framework /literature Review. If the paper is planned to include also empirical data, please inform about methodological issues, sample and planned presentation of results. Kindly send as long version as you can but remembering that all journal /edited books have a maximum number of pages/length for the paper. Sisältö: Kurssilla esitellään tutkijoiden kannalta oleellisimmat sosiaalisen median kanavat ja punnitaan sosiaalisen median vahvuudet, heikkoudet, mahdollisuudet ja uhat. Pohdimme yhdessä, mitä hyötyä sosiaalisesta mediasta on akateemisella urapolulla ja lisääkö esimerkiksi tutkimustulosten esittely sosiaalisessa mediassa artikkeliviittauksia. Learning outcomes and content: In this workshop, sustainability is understood broadly as an activity that can be continued indefinitely without causing harm associated with ways of fulfilling our present needs without endangering those of future generations. Sustainability is discussed in the context of globalized cultures, as an aspect or norm in managing communication, multilingual, multicultural and multinational encounters and interactions between humans and different environments. Moreover, sustainability can serve as a heuristic in the analysis of representations and narrative constructions of for example memory and history in different cultural forms such as literature, film or other material artefacts. The workshop will feature dialogic introductions and workshop sessions in which participants can present their projects and have the opportunity of developing ideas in dialogue with other researchers. Participants may contribute with a 20-minute-long presentation. They will apply this knowledge in a practical session, in which they will become familiar with the online corpus interface of Corpus BYU ( by working through hands-on exercises. The course is also open to doctoral students of engineering, economic sciences, and management sciences interested in exploring the English language. Content: Linguistic corpora are large samples of text. Corpus tools allow users to query the corpora systematically to extract information from the text. This information includes linguistic expressions (e.g., how to intensify a given expression like "*heavy* smoker" but "*strong* tea"), sentiment assignment (e.g., "They *doubt* John Major will make his mark"), specialized terminology (e.g., in academic discourse), topics of subcorpora or individual texts among others. The introductory course to economics or experience from microeconomic foundations of firms is sufficient for course attendance. Applied equilibrium analysis in energy policy and energy economics analysis is based on microeconomic theory that combines behavioral assumptions on rational economic agents with the analysis of equilibrium conditions. Quantitative simulations to evaluate alternative policy measures play a key role in applied economic research. Compared to analytical models, the numerical approach facilitates the analysis of complex economic interactions and the impact assessment of structural policy changes. Applied equilibrium analysis constitutes a very general method to perform economic impact assessment of policy regulation. Learning outcome: After the three-day workshop doctoral students have an overview on energy market regulation including emission pricing, subsidies to renewable energies, constraints on energy trade (e.g. due to energy security considerations), electricity market reforms to promote competitive (marginal) electricity pricing, etc. The workshop develops step by step quantitative models that are used for the economic assessment of energy market regulations. The primary focus of the workshop will be on the detailed presentation and discussion of CPE models for climate policy analysis and electricity market regulation. Content: Part 1: Generic Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS): A brief introduction to computation economics, Basic syntax of GAMS, Data handling (GDX files, XLS interfaces) and plotting routines (GNUPLOT). Part 2: Optimization, Economic Equilibrium and Mixed Complementarity: Mixed complementarity and optimization, Market equilibrium (mathematical programs and MCP). Part 3: EU climate policy and international coal markets. Economic cost of emission regulation based on sector- and region-specific marginal abatement cost curves. International coal markets and leakage through unilateral emission regulation. Part 4: Electricity markets: Multi-region electricity markets with imperfect competition, Electricity dispatch and CO2 emission pricing. Each part also includes practical hands-on session. Students have to program a policy-oriented modification of some model that discussed during the workshop which will involve (i) some data mining, (ii) implementing the logical extension to the pre-existing central simulation model, (iii) performing the policy analysis, (iv) writing a 5-8 page summary on the policy issue, simulation results and policy conclusions. 13 Content: Section A: Ethical theory and importance of research ethics. This section focuses on developing skills to analyse and recognise ethical challenges in research. This section also provides guidance and practice for recognising ethical principles and questions in research practice. The student will engage with different perspectives on ethical questions in research and reflecting on how these perspectives apply to their own research, ethical thinking, and more generally in their field of study. Section B: Planning for ethical research. This section focuses on ethical questions that arise at the planning phase of research. These include ethical aspects on data acquisition and management; conflict of interest, need for ethical license or ethical review; data ownership; working with others; applying for research funding; working in a research groups; and preparing to publish. The students explore the research planning process from an ethical perspective and learn to recognise different questions that apply to their own research work and to research in general. During the section students apply the learning to their own research planning identifying and clarifying ethical elements in that plan. Section C: Research practice and ethics. This section focuses on the ethical questions arising from doing research work. These include collecting data, collegial openness, dealing with ethical problems as they arise, supervision, misconduct of fabrication and falsification, and dealing with misconduct claims. The students reflect on and analyse the potential ethical challenges for their research work and seek ways to primarily prevent them or if necessary, how to resolve issues in an ethically appropriate manner aligning with Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines. Section D: Sharing research results in an ethical manner. The last section focuses on sharing research results either via peer-reviewed publications or more openly with the society through media and expert roles.
