3 UPACMIC LIFE12 ENV/FI/000592 CO 2 report 1. Introduction This carbon footprint report sets out the results of the carbon footprint monitoring done so far in the UPACMIC project. The Carbon footprint monitoring is done in order to keep track of the greenhouse gas emissions developed by the project. The results of the UPACMIC carbon footprint are compared with the carbon footprint of ABSOILS LIFE09 ENV/FI/000575 in Finland. The ABSOILS project has similar actions as UPACMIC, including material testing and piloting. The major difference between the projects is that the UPACMIC is located in mining environment in Northern Ostrobothnia as the ABSOILS pilots are related to the road and field construction in the capital region of Finland. With the help of the carbon footprint report the project can point out actions or working methods that generates a lot of carbon dioxide emissions relating to the results by certain action. The overall point of this carbon footprint reporting is to observe the emissions created by this project. The final carbon footprint report will present the total carbon footprint of the project. The first Carbon footprint report will be updated as new results are gathered. The methodology of the carbon footprint calculation and the assumptions made in the calculation are presented in chapters 2 and 3. The results of the carbon footprint calculation as well as the evaluation and comparison of the results are presented in chapter 4. 2. Methodology The carbon footprint monitoring was performed on the basis of the documented hours of work, kilometres and vehicle travelled. Each partner documented the travelled kilometres (by car, by train or by airplane) to meetings and the emission producing actions on the piloting site were evaluated and documented. The deskwork in the project is normal deskwork and the CO 2 emissions from the deskwork can be calculated on the basis of the deskwork hours documented on the timesheets. The emissions from the laboratory work are also calculated on the basis of the work hours. The additional energy consumption related to the laboratory equipment needed for the material tests are calculated in the consumption of energy on hourly basis, which is thus included to the carbon footprint of the work. 3. Assumptions The following assumptions were made in the carbon footprint calculation. The laboratory and deskwork facilities in office consume about 75 000 kwh per year and the total working hours of the office are 21 000 h per year. The approximate energy consumption of a working hour is 3,6 kw and the CO 2ekv emissions are 800 g CO 2ekv per working hour. Assumption that the

4 UPACMIC LIFE12 ENV/FI/000592 CO 2 report laboratory work and desk work consume the same amount of energy as the energy consumption is difficult to allocate to different kinds of work. However a normal office with no laboratory consumes lower amount of energy and therefore the following assumption is made. In the other offices with only deskwork facilities the energy consumption is estimated to be 2,6 kw per hour and the CO 2ekv emissions are 580 gco 2ekv per working hour. The emissions of vehicles are assumed to be the same as the manufacturer declares (gco 2ekv /km) multiplied by the kilometres travelled. For those with no manufacturer information the data was taken from www.ilmastolaskuri.fi webpages. CO 2 emissions for train travels are 0. The carbon footprint for train trips are checked from the VR Group webpage own calculator, which is based on the data of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland LIPASTO-database The emissions from the use of office supplies such as paper, pens, pencils, plastic products (binders, folders) etc. are assumed to be zero as the emissions would be too difficult to evaluate correctly and on the other hand the emissions would be so small that compared to other activities it isn t in any key role considering the total emissions of the project. The CO 2 emissions from the used materials will be added in the following reports. 4. Results 4.1 UPACMIC The results of the UPCAMIC project are calculated on the basis of the information given by the partners. The total carbon footprint in the period of 1 st July 2013 to 31 st October 2014 is 9.2 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent. The carbon footprint is divided to travelling, piloting and deskwork according to the following table. The detailed calculations can be found as a supplement of the report. The Table 1 presents the generated CO 2 emissions during the first reporting period. The piloting has not started yet, so there are no calculated CO 2 emissions for piloting. Table 1. CO 2 emissions generated during the project. Tonnes of CO 2 equivalent 1.7.2013-31.10.2014 Total Travelling 5.5 5.5 Piloting work - Deskwork 3.7 3.7 TOTAL 9.2 9.2

5 UPACMIC LIFE12 ENV/FI/000592 CO 2 report In the first period under review, travelling has caused most of the CO 2 emissions, 5.7 tonnes, and deskwork 3.7 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent. There have been several meetings during the first period, which explains the higher travelling CO 2 result. Also the fact, that Finland is a sparsely populated country, so the use of public transportation is not always possible. The Hitura mine is located in Northern Ostrobothnia so the travelling distances are very long. The detailed calculating sheet from travelling is presented in Supplement 1. The CO2 emissions from deskwork and laboratory are presented in Table 2. Table 2. CO2 results from the deskwork by different partners. The projects are very different as the piloting action in the ABSOILS project is about utilisation of surplus soils in different civil engineering actions and UPACMIC project takes place in mining environment. When compared the UPACMIC and ABSOILS results in the first period, there is a clear difference in the CO 2 results from the travelling. As it was clarified in the previous chapter, the Hitura mine is located in northern part of Finland, and in the ABSOILS project all the pilots were located in the capital region of Helsinki. In the ABSOILS project the CO 2 emissions from the train travelling were also calculated on the basis of the Ilmastolaskuri webpage, which resulted in small figures, although the impact is very minimal in the final results. The CO 2 results for the deskwork are similar between the projects.
