GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 3 (17) 25.9.2009 1 INTRODUCTION Areva Resources Finland Oy carried out U exploration during 2007-2009 in the Riutta claim area (17 claims, a total of 1527 ha), located in Eno and Kontiolahti (Appendix 1). The exploration works consisted of geological mapping, bedrock drillings, geophysical measurements and removal of 2-3 m of surface soil on top of bedrock for geological mapping and soil sampling. Groundwater monitoring was conducted from monitoring wells and drill holes during the exploration. Locations of the research trenches and bedrock drillings by Areva Resources Finland Oy are presented in Appendix 2. Atomienergia Oy, Outokumpu Oy and Geological Survey of Finland carried out U exploration in the Riutta area in 1950 s, 1960 s, and 1980 s, respectively, before Areva Resources Finland Oy. Prior to the start of the Areva s exploration work, Geological Survey of Finland conducted a geochemical baseline study in the Riutta claim area in August 2006 (Tenhola et al. 2007). In the study, geochemical baseline of stream and lake sediments, stream and lake waters, groundwater and mosses were investigated in the area. In addition, Quaternary mapping in the scale 1:5,000 and mapping of the surface flow directions were carried out. In 2007, groundwater samples were further collected from two additional drill core boreholes (R324, R326) and from surface water pools at Unimonttu and Ristimonttu (Tenhola 2008a). In 2008, four groundwater monitoring wells, extending through the Quaternary deposits down to the bedrock surface, were installed in the area, and groundwater quality was recorded from two depths from these wells in July 2008 (Tenhola 2008b). Total alpha activity, radium-226 and radon-222 were determined from the groundwater samples in addition to cation, trace element and anion measurements. The baseline study report (Tenhola et al. 2006) also included a detailed description of the environmental and geological conditions as well as the previous research in the Riutta claim area. Kaija et al. (2009) have studied the water quality in the drill core boreholes (R324, R325, R326) in the area in more detail. This report describes the results of the present state geochemical study that was carried out after cessation of the U exploration in the Riutta area, in August 2009. The study was made to evaluate if the exploration works by Areva Resources Finland Oy has affected the geochemical quality of the environment in the area. Similar samples to the previous baseline study, and its additions, were collected and analysed for geochemical and radiometric parameters. An assessment of the environmental impact of the exploration works was made based on the comparison between the data collected in the baseline study and in the present survey. The present state geochemical survey was performed on the request by Areva Resources Finland Oy. Operative manager Tapani Hyysalo was the representative of Areva Resources Finland Oy in the project. Environmental geologist Päivi M. Heikkinen, as a representative of the Geological Survey of Finland, was responsible for the study. Data collection was conducted by the Geological Survey of Finland by research assistant Alpo Eronen, research scientist Anna Tornivaara and environmental geologist Päivi Heikkinen. Alpo Eronen produced the maps for the report and geologist Olli Äikäs provided the map in Appendix 2.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 4 (17) 25.9.2009 2 SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS 2.1 Water samples Altogether 23 water samples were collected from the study area (Appendices 3 and 4) in August 2009. Groundwater samples were taken from groundwater monitoring wells (PVP1, PVP2, PVP3, PVP4; 7 samples), private dug wells (WELLs 3, 4, 7 and Kiili) and from the water intake plant of the municipality of Kontiolahti (1 WELL) and it s pumping station (2 WELL). In the latter, the sample was taken from the monitoring well beside the pumping station instead of the pumping station as in 2006, because the pumping station was temporarily out of order. Prior to sampling, monitoring wells PVP1-PVP4 were rinsed by pumping the wells for 25-30 minutes. The depth of the water table was measured prior to and after pumping to assure the recovery of the water table in the well before sampling. To ensure fresh water in the monitoring well 2 WELL, 5 bailer volumes of water were removed from the well prior to sampling. Water samples were taken with a bailer (monitoring wells; Fig. 1a) or with the Limnos water sampler (dug wells), except for the dug well 4 WELL, which was directly sampled using the pump in the well (Fig. 1b). a) b) c) Fig. 1. a) Monitoring wells were sampled with a bailer. b) The sample was taken from 4 WELL using the pump in the well. c) The 3 WELL contained some aquatic plants. The well was sampled with the Limnos sampler. Photos: Päivi M. Heikkinen, GTK. Samples were collected from two depths of the groundwater monitoring wells PVP1 (5.8 m and 11 m), PVP2 (4.5 m and 19 m) and PVP3 (9.2 m and 18 m). Only one sample was taken from the well PVP4 (3.5 m), because it was not possible to get a representative sample from the deeper depth due to a high amount of suspended particulate material in the well water, despite the rinsing. In the other monitoring

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 5 (17) 25.9.2009 wells, the deeper sample had to be taken from somewhat shallower depth than in 2006 to avoid the particulate material. Aquatic plants were growing in the dug well 3 WELL introducing some particulate organic material to the samples (Fig. 1c). a) b) c) d) Fig. 2. Examples of stream water and sediment sampling sites in the Riutta area. a) Kuusoja stream (12SW, 12SS), b) Riuttapuro stream (10 SW, 10 SS), c) a stream discharging to Matari spring (14 STREAM) and d) pond Ristimonttu (Ristimonttu). Photos a and b: Anna Tornivaara, GTK. Photos c and d: Päivi M. Heikkinen, GTK. Surface water samples were collected from Kuusoja and Riuttapuro streams (9 SW-13SW; 5 samples), a stream running close to the Matari uraniferous spring (14 STREAM), the pond Ristimonttu ( Ristimonttu ) next to the old U prospecting trench, and lakes Riuttalampi (5 LW = 5 LAKE),

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 6 (17) 25.9.2009 Urkkalampi (8 LW = 8 LAKE) and Pikku Urkkalampi (15 LW = 15 LAKE) (Fig. 2; Appendices 3 and 4). The surface water samples were directly taken from the streams into the sampling bottles and the lake waters were sampled with the Limnos water sampler close to the lake bottom (in Lake Riuttalampi at ca. 15 m depth and in Lake Urkkalampi at ca. 6 m depth). Sample from the Lake Pikku Urkkalampi was taken from the shore from ca. 0.5-1.0 m depth, because the lake was not accessible with a boat. Coordinates and descriptions of all the sampling points are presented in Appendix 4. Five different types of water samples were collected from each sampling point. Unfiltered samples were taken into a 500-ml PE bottle for anion analyses, a 25-ml glass bottle that was prefilled with 12 ml of scintillation gel for radon analyses, a 100-ml PE bottle for total alpha measurements, and a 100-ml PE bottle for total cations and trace metals. The last one was acidified immediately in the field with concentrated Suprapur HNO 3. For dissolved cation and trace metal measurements, the water samples were filtered into a 100-ml PE bottle through a 0.45-µm filter and acidified with concentrated Suprapur HNO 3 to keep dissolved constituents in solution. An additional set of samples was taken for dissolved element concentrations for the surface and groundwater sampling points representing the 2006 baseline study sampling network. Similar to 2006, these 100-ml samples were settled in laboratory for 2-3 days prior to filtering. After sampling, ph, EC, redox, and O 2 were recorded in the field for each sampling point with a multiparameter field meter. In addition, alkalinity was determined in the field using a Hach digital titrator with 0.1600 N H 2 SO 4 to an end point of 4.5. Total and dissolved cation and trace metal concentrations were measured in an accredited laboratory using ICP-AES/MS technique (totals from wet acid digestion with HNO 3 ). Major anion concentrations were determined using ion chromatography. Measurements of ph, EC and alkalinity were repeated in the laboratory using potentiometric methods for ph and EC, and titration method for alkalinity. For total alpha determinations the water samples were freeze dried and dissolved in small amount of HCl. Scintillation solution was added to the samples and they were allowed to equilibrate for 30 days prior to measurement with a liquid scintillation counter. Ra-226 determinations were directly made from the sample bottles using a scintillation counter. This report includes the results of the chemical analyses. Results of the radiometric determinations will be reported separately. 2.2 Stream sediment and moss samples Stream sediment samples were collected from 5 sampling sites in Kuusoja and Riuttapuro streams (9SS- 13SS) in August 2009. Samples were taken as composite samples of 5 subsamples collected over a distance of 20-100 m downstream from the stream water sampling point. Organic stream sediments were collected using a net with 0.06 mm pores (Fig. 3a). At each subsampling point, the organic-rich material was suspended and collected to the net. Leaves and branches were removed and the subsamples were poured into a bucket. The heavier material was settled at the bottom of the bucket and the lighter organic material was returned to the net. The extra water was removed from the sample by twisting the net and the sample was placed in a plastic bag (Räisänen et al. 1992). Stream water sampling sites are shown in Appendix 3 and their coordinates are provided in Appendix 4.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 7 (17) 25.9.2009 Five moss samples were collected from an approximately 1 ha area, each, as a 1 litre composite sample of 5 subsamples (Appendices 3 and 4). Each subsample, consisting of the uppermost three shoots of Hyloconium splendes (Fig. 3b), was clean-picked by hand into paper bags using a pair of plastic gloves. Clear affection by throughfall precipitation was avoided by collecting the subsamples from open spaces. Litter, twigs and other species were removed during sampling (e.g. Salminen et al. 2004). The organic stream sediment and moss samples were freeze dried and sieved to < 2 mm fraction prior to analysis. For total cation and trace element measurements, the samples were leached with nitric acid using the microwave oven technique and the extractants were analysed with ICP-AES/MS -technique. Total concentrations of C and N were analysed using a C-N analyser. Ra-226, Pb-210 and total alpha activity were determined with gammaspectrometer. Results of the radiometric determinations are presented in a separate report. a) b ) c) Fig. 3. a) Organic stream sediment samples were collected with a net; b and c) Shoots of Hyloconium splendens were collected from five sampling points in the Riutta area, in August 2009. Photos: Anna Tornivaara, GTK. 3 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In the following, the geochemistry of the surface and groundwater (streams, dug wells, lakes), stream sediment and moss samples is compared with the values obtained from the study area during August 2006, prior to commencement of the exploration. Groundwater quality of the monitoring wells PVP1- PVP4 is compared to the values measured in July 2008 when the monitoring wells were installed at the site. The comparative values for the water quality in the Ristimonttu pond date to September 2007.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 8 (17) 25.9.2009 Based on the regional discharge data (Fig. 4; Finnish environment institute, 2009), the amount of runoff has been at the same level in the Riutta area during the sampling periods in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In August 2006, the conditions were, however, much drier than during the other sampling campaigns. 400 300 200 100 0 January 06 April 06 July 06 October 06 January 07 April 07 July 07 October 07 January 08 April 08 July 08 October 08 January 09 Average monthly discharge (m 3 /s) Pielisjoki, Kaltimo April 09 July 09 Fig. 4. Average monthly discharge (m3/s; Pielisjoki, Kaltimo) in the vicinity of the Riutta claim area between January 2006 and September 2009 (Finnish environment institute, 2009). The sampling periods of baseline and present state surveys are indicated with red symbols. Month 3.1 Groundwater quality after exploration Summary of the dissolved elements in groundwater in the Riutta area in 2006 and 2009 are presented in Tables 1 and 2. Results of the field measurements are summarized in Appendix 5, and the results of the chemical analyses of August 2009 are provided as a whole in Appendices 6 and 7. 7 WELL represents the background for groundwaters in the area as it locates in a different drainage basin from the exploration works (Appendices 2, 3 and 8). PVP3 is also located in a different drainage basin but it may be influenced by the drainage from the mire Matarinsuo (cf. Tenhola 2008) that contains high amounts of uranium (Äikäs et al. 1994). Based on the chemical data, the overall quality of the groundwaters in the dug wells of the Riutta area and in the Kontiolahti water intake plan was similar in 2009 than in 2006 (Table 1). In addition, the quality was in accordance with the median values measured from the Finnish dug wells (Lahermo et al. 2002; Table 1) and met the criteria set for the Finnish household waters (STMa 2001). This was except for the ph value, which was generally somewhat lower (5.8-6.0) than the household water limit in Finland (6.5-9.5). This is, however, typical for this part of the country (cf. Lahermo et al. 2002) and was observed already in the 2006 data.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 9 (17) 25.9.2009 Some minor changes in the chemical quality of the dug wells were, however, observed. In wells 2 WELL and 7 WELL there was an increase in Al concentrations, and in the 1 WELL Mn and Zn amounts were somewhat higher in August 2009 than in August 2006. The increase in Al is most likely related to an increase in the suspended particulate matter in the wells (/samples), because also the total concentrations (the fraction including suspended particulates) of Al had increased (Table 1). The 7 WELL, representing the background, may receive surface runoff that could contribute to organic material (with Al) into well water. In the 2 WELL the Al originates from the suspended mineral matter that was not possible to avoid in the sampling (see Appendix 4). Uranium concentrations showed no notable changes in the dug wells (Table 1; Appendix 9). The highest dissolved U concentration was measured in 4 WELL (1.4 µg/l), but it was much below the WHO drinking water limit for U (15 µg/l; WHO 2008) and was at the same level as in 2006. Table 1. Water chemistry (ph, electrical conductivity (EC), saturation level of dissolved oxygen (DO), and concentrations of dissolved elements; samples filtered after 2-3 days settling to measure dissolved elements) of the water intake plant (1 WELL) and dug wells in the Riutta area in 2006 and 2009. The concentrations showing distinguished increases from 2006 to 2009 are marked with light yellow and those with decreases are marked with light blue shading. Drinking water limits (DWL; STMa 2001, WHO 2008) are presented for comparison. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 10 (17) 25.9.2009 Similar to the dug wells, the groundwater in the monitoring wells PVP1-PVP4 showed no notable chemical changes from 2008 to 2009, and was of good quality, with dissolved element concentrations below the national household water guidelines (STMa 2001; Table 2). This was except for the dissolved Fe and Mn concentrations that exceeded the guideline values in particularly in the deeper level of the well PVP2. However, there was only a small change in their values from 2008 (Table 2). The dissolved oxygen concentration was also low in the deeper level of the well PVP2, indicating a reducing environment, which enhances the mobility of Fe and Mn. There were no marked changes in the U concentrations in the monitoring wells between 2008 and 2009. The dissolved concentrations varied from 0.1 to 0.7 µg/l in 2009. In 2008, the range was between 0.05-0.8 µg/l (Table 2). Overall, the U concentrations in the soil aquifers in the Riutta area were small. The dug wells in the south-eastern Finland, where till is richer in U, may contain up to 30 µg/l of U (Lahermo et al. 2002). Table 2. Water chemistry (ph, electrical conductivity (EC), saturation level of dissolved oxygen (DO), and concentrations of dissolved elements; samples filtered immediately in the field for dissolved elements) of the monitoring wells in the Riutta area in 2008 and 2009. The concentrations showing distinguished increases from 2008 to 2009 are marked with light yellow and those with decreases are marked with light blue shading. Drinking water limits (DWL; STMa 2001, WHO 2008) are presented for comparison. See Table 1 for median values of Finnish dug wells. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 11 (17) 25.9.2009 3.2 Stream and lake water quality after exploration The results of the dissolved element measurements made from the stream and lake waters in the Riutta area in 2006 and 2009 are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. Results of the field measurements are provided in Appendix 5 and those of the chemical analyses for the August 2009 are presented as a whole in Appendices 6 and 7. Stream sampling point 11SW in Kuusoja stream is upstream of the prospecting area and thus represents the background for the site (Appendices 2 and 3). The quality of the stream waters was very similar in 2009 than in 2006 (Table 3). The only notable change was in the amount of dissolved Al that had slightly increased in nearly all the sampling points, including the background sample 11SW. Aluminium concentrations in surface waters are susceptible to increase when there is an increased loading of particulate material from the drainage basin. Based on the regional discharge in the Riutta area, the runoff has been higher in August 2009 than in August 2006 (Fig. 4), enhancing the transport of mineral and organic material into the streams. Similar trend to dissolved Al was also seen in the total concentrations of Al (Table 3), which further supports the idea of enhanced loading of particulate material. Table 3. Stream water quality (ph, electrical conductivity (EC), and concentrations dissolved elements; samples filtered after 2-3 days settling to measure dissolved elements) in 2006 and 2009 in the Riutta area. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 12 (17) 25.9.2009 The highest U concentrations in the surface and groundwaters were measured in the Ristimonttu pond (5.4 µg/l), locating downstream from the old, unrestored U prospecting trench of Atomienergia Oy (Tenhola et al. 2007, Tenhola 2008a), and in the stream running close to the uraniferous Matari spring (14 SW: 2.0 µg/l of U; Table 3). In the Ristimonttu pond the U concentration was lower than in 2007 and in 14SW it was comparable to the year 2006. Overall, the U concentrations showed no notable changes in stream waters from 2006 to 2009 (Appendix 9). Table 4. Lake water quality (ph, electrical conductivity (EC), and concentrations of dissolved elements; samples filtered after 2-3 days settling to measure dissolved elements) in 2006 and 2009 in the Riutta area. Table 4 shows the summary of the results of the water quality in lakes Urkkalampi, Pikku Urkkalampi and Riuttalampi prior to and after exploration. The lakes Urkkalampi and Pikku Urkkalampi are located upstream of the exploration works and thus represent background concentrations in the area. In the drainage area of Lake Riuttalampi, minor exploration activity occurred (Appendices 2 and 8). Based on the results, water quality in Lake Riuttalampi was similar in 2009 than in 2006 (Table 4). In addition, the U levels in Lake Riuttalampi equaled to the U concentrations in the other two lakes. Similar to the stream waters, a minor increase in Al concentrations (both dissolved and total) was detected in the background lakes of Urkkalampi and Pikku Urkkalampi. As discussed in previous chapter, this most likely results from the increased amounts of transport of suspended particulate material into lakes due to natural seasonal variation in the area.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 13 (17) 25.9.2009 3.3 Geochemistry of the stream sediments after exploration Comparison of the element concentrations in the stream sediments before (2006) and after (2009) exploration is presented in Table 5. Appendix 10 shows the chemical results of the stream sediments in August 2009, as a whole. Table 5 shows that some changes have occurred in the chemistry of the organic stream sediments between 2006 and 2009, mainly in the samples 11SS, 12SS and 13SS, collected from the Kuusoja stream. The sample 11SS is upstream of the exploration works. It can thus be regarded as the background sample for the site and the increased concentrations of Mn, Ba and Co can be interpreted to be related to the natural variation in the area and are not caused by the exploration works. Table 5. Element concentrations (HNO 3 leach) and their average values in organic stream sediments in the Riutta claim area in 2006 and 2009. The only exception was the moss sample 4 MOSS, in which some elements (Zn, Ba, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P) were slighty increased from the 2006 level (Table 6). This sampling point locates ca. 3.5 kilometers SE from the nearest exploration works, located in Kasivaara. It has the longest distance to the active exploration area of all the moss sampling points (Appendices 2 and 3), and is considered to represent the local background in the area. Therefore, the changes in element concentrations are more

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF FINLAND RESEARCH REPORT 15 (17) 25.9.2009 likely due to a natural variation in the area, or to a possible use of forest fertilizers, than a result of the U exploration. Ca, K, Mg, P, Zn are typical nutrients in forest fertilizers. The moss sample 3 MOSS located closest to the exploration trenches and was within a 50 m distance from the Kasivaara trenches. Nevertheless, most of the element concentrations in 3 MOSS were somewhat smaller in 2009 than in 2006 (Table 6). U concentrations were at the same level as in 2006. Overall, the average element concentrations, including U, of the moss samples were equal or smaller in 2009 than those collected in 2006. In addition, they were similar to the regional median concentrations in moss in the Lapland-Karelian metablock (Table 6), which is a geologically uniform area extending from eastern Finland to Lapland (Salminen et al. 2004) and includes the Riutta claim area. 4 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS A present state study was conducted by the Geological Survey of Finland in the vicinity of the Riutta claim area after cessation of U exploration work by Areva Resources Finland Oy. Sampling materials comprised groundwater, stream water, lake water, organic stream sediments and moss. Samples were collected from the same sampling sites as in August 2006, by the Geological Survey of Finland, prior the beginning of the exploration by Areva Resources Finland Oy. Additional samples were collected from groundwater monitoring wells installed in 2008 and from an old excavation pond in the area. The samples were analysed for chemical composition and radiometric parameters. The results of the latter analyses will be reported separately. Based on the chemical analysis results, there were no marked changes in the chemical quality of the waters, sediments or the moss samples between 2006 and 2009 that would have resulted from the exploration works in the Riutta area. The only marked increase in U concentrations was observed in the Kuusoja stream sediments downstream from the uraniferous Matarinsuo bog and the old, unrestored U prospecting trench of Atomienergia Oy. In all the other sampling points, the U concentrations were at the same level as in 2006.
