Raute s role and potential in the global LVL industry
LVL the responsible revolution The global LVL market in 2012 represented a total of 3 Million m3. By 2017, the volume is forecasted to grow up to 5.3 Million m3. Average annual growth of 14%. 2012 LVL global production capacity = 4.8 Million m3. By 2016 the forecasted global LVL demand may surpass the available LVL production capacity. 22
Upward LVL market when volume meets value The global LVL market in 2012 had a weight of 1.65 billion US$ The market is forecasted to grow up to 4.44 billion US$ in 2017 Main growth drivers: significant growth of LVL volumes and prices in NA LVL prices recovery in China LVL volumes and price levels growth in Europe 23
The rise of the global LVL market Increased activity of the construction sectors in the key LVL markets. Increased usage rate of LVL in Residential, Commercial segment and as flange material for I-Joists. New building standards (i.e. Japan, China) in response to earthquakes favor usage of LVL. New thermal regulations (CERT for low carbon buildings) support usage of LVL versus bricks, concrete and steel due to lower thermal conductivity. LVL as substitute of large dimension solid timber in heavy structural applications. 24
Key LVL markets insights North America US new housing starts - distinguished pent-up trend. 90% from all residential housing in North America use Timber Frame (LVL, I-Joists, Glulam, LSL). Tight supplies of Solid Timber LVL demand to reach 3 Million m3 by 2017. With only 2.7 Million m3 available LVL production capacity, a shortage of 500,000m3 LVL is to be expected. Source: FEA 25
Key LVL markets insights Japan Very large housing market (1 Million new housing starts in 2012). Growing Timber Frame sector and usage of LVL and Glulam. 1.5 Million houses need rennovation by 2015 to meet the government s earthquake proof conditions. LVL demand to grow by 5% annually during the next 3 years. The only Structural LVL mill in Japan Keytec (Raute equipped) increases LVL production. 26
Key LVL markets insights China Fragmented LVL production market: 55 LVL manufacturers. Predominantly low grade-low cost non- Structural LVL. Local LVL production exported to Japan for non-load bearing applications (numerous Japan-Chinese JV s). Known Chinese production capacity is of 1 Million m3 LVL for consumption of 913,000m3 LVL in 2012. Prescription and education needed to develop the LVL Structural market. The first Structural LVL mill Kemian Wood (Raute equipped) has just been installed and ready for production. 27
Key LVL markets insights Australia Housing market is picking up. Growing LVL usage rate in residential and commercial buildings. High rate of substitution of LVL for hardwood sawn timber (supply constraints) and steel (rising prices). 2012 LVL demand = 212,000m3, projected to grow by 6% annually up to 2015. 2012 LVL production capacity = 123,000m3. The void is filled by LVL imported from NZ. One of the largest in the world LVL usage rate in Commercial segment. 28
Key LVL markets insights Europe Slow construction recovery and modest growth in new housing starts. Growing Timber Frame rate for residential and non-residential construction. Expanding method of off-site manufacturing and LVL usage in it. Expected incremental growth through new LVL visual and hi-tech applications (Pollmeier LVL mill, Raute equipped). LVL consumption is forecasted to grow from 215,000m3 to 400,000m3 in 2016, part driven by exports to NA. 29
LVL - destruction of stereotypes Timber Industry players interest towards LVL production grows: usage of larger raw material base better log recovery better cost/performance ratio v/s other building materials allows speed, simplicity and cost efficiency of construction can be manufactured in almost any length has high sales value 30
Efficiency is a terrible thing to waste Among all LVL technology suppliers, only Raute s portfolio is comprehensive; from Business Intelligence to full project management, customer training and after sales services. Raute - one stop shop for LVL Over 30 years of experience in LVL and much longer in veneer processing. LVL pressing- and lay-up technologies developed in-house for best performance.
