Sinapinsiemenestä kasvaa niin suuri puu, että linnut voivat tehdä pesänsä sen oksille. Jeesuksen vertaus kertoo meistä. Se kuvaa sitä, kuinka uskomme voi alkuun olla pientä ja heiveröistä, mutta Jumalan puutarhassa se saa kasvaa täyteen mittaansa ja voi siten antaa kasvualustan, suojan ja ravintoa myös muille. Sinapinsiemenvertaus on myös kaunis kuvaus seurakunnasta parhaimmillaan. Terve ja rakastava uskovien yhteisö hoitaa ja ravitsee meitä kaikissa elämän tilanteissamme. Se on kuin vehreä ja runsas kotipuu, jonka armolliseen suojaan on aina yhtä ihanaa ja turvallista palata. Toivonkin, että kesälomilta palaavat seurakuntalaisemme voivat näin kokea. Yhdessä me saamme vastata siitä, että St.Andrew s-puu pysyy elinvoimaisena ja sen oksat kantavat meitä ja muita myös jatkossakin. Itse palasin parin viikon Suomen lomalta takaisin tänne kiitollisin ja hyvin mielin. Jumalanpalvelukset olivat poissaollessani hoituneet hienosti Mikan ja vapaaehtoisten avulla. Uskollinen pieni joukko on jaksanut kokoontua kirkolle Sanan ja rukouksen ääreen läpi koko kesän. Toimistolla on ollut melko hiljaista Hannan loman aikana, mutta on ollut myös tilanteita, joissa olisimme kaivanneet hänen tietotaitoaan ja aina niin ystävällistä asennettaan. Toisin sanoin, olemme kiitollisia siitä, että Hanna on palannut takaisin! Jumala sanoo Jesajan kirjassa: Minä annan rauhan, rauhan lähelle ja kauas. Sitä samaa, Jumalan rauhaa minä toivotan teille, rakkaat seurakuntalaiset lähellä ja kaukana. Siunaavin ajatuksin, Mia-pastori Pastor s Greeting The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree. The mustard seed grows into such a big tree that birds are able to build their nests on its branches. Jesus' parable tells about us. It describes how our faith at the beginning can be small and feeble, but in God's garden it reaches its full height and can therefore provide a place for growth, protection and nourishment for others as well. The parable about the mustard seed also is a beautiful description of a congregation at its best. A healthy and loving community of believers nurses and nourishes us throughout our lives. It is like a lush and generous home tree under the gracious protection of which it is always equally wonderful and safe to return. I do hope that our parishioners returning from holidays can experience this. Together we are to see to it that the St. Andrew's tree stays viable and that its branches support us and others also in the future. I myself returned here from my two-week vacation in Finland with a grateful and happy mind. The Sunday services had been taken care of by Michael and volunteers in a wonderful manner. A faithful small group has had the strength to gather at the church for Word and prayer throughout the summer. It has been pretty quiet at the office during Hanna's vacation, but there have been situations where we would have needed her knowhow and ever so friendly attitude. In other words, we are grateful to have Hanna back! Peace, peace, to those far and near, says the Lord in the Book of Isaiah. Kuorot ei ala harjoituksia vielä elokuussa, annan enemän tietoja kun aika tulee. Hyvää kesää! The summer is here and the heat continues just like summer vacation for most people. Thank-you to all the singers and volunteers who have given time to the church over the last few months. Thank you also to Merja Hulkkonen and Marja-Liisa Palonen who led service in July while Pastor Mia was in Finland. Choir practices will not resume yet in the month of August, I will let everyone know as the time nears. Have a nice summer! Michael Poutiainen Council news Regardless of vacations and fewer meetings, the Church Council has actively followed church activities and happenings this summer. Since Pastor Mia s installation, we have begun planning for the rest of this year. The Reformation s 500th anniversary and Finland s 100th year of independence will continue to be celebrated at special events during the fall of 2017. In the meanwhile, we are very grateful to have our air conditioner back and running, to have our Pastor back from vacation, to have had volunteers here all summer and to have the office secretary back from Finland. Before our next Council meeting on August 16, Pastor Mia and Council members: Heather Scholnicoff- Council President, Meija Sillanpaa and Hanna Kiuru- Council Secretary will attend a Global Leadership Forum to enhance their service to our church. As a result, the church office will be closed on August 10 and 11. If you have anything you would like to share with the Council, please tell a member. Evangel Volume 23, Issue 8 Preschool News- August 2017 We had a lot of fun in June learning about Florida and Finland and how they are similar and different. We also enjoyed making surprises for Father s Day. Then we had a short break- the school was closed July 3 rd through July 7th. When school resumed after the 4 th of July break, we began our Nursery Rhyme and Fairy Tale theme. We learned how to rhyme, read stories, made Humpty Dumptys and played Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We end the month and begin August learning about the Ocean. The children will study and categorize different sea shells, paint beach scenes, make fish prints and jellyfish and have fun playing with sand! In mid-august we will say good-bye to our departing kindergarteners, greet new young students, learn school rules and procedures and get ready to start a new school year filled with music, art, yoga, learning and play. The office will be open Monday- Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Worship services will continue to be held in the Fellowship Hall, except on the first and third Sundays. We are interested! ANNOUNCEMENTS English Bible study will be held on Wednesday, August 2 at 6:00 pm Would you like to go to the Synod Assembly Conference? The Synod Assembly will be held October 12-14 in Orlando, Florida. Esko and Merja Hulkkonen had to resign as delegates to the Assembly. The Council has one volunteer delegate, Heather Scholnicoff and is looking for anaother. Please let Pastor or a Council member know of your interest! Thanks! The recipients of the 2017 Higher Education Scholarship are Sabriina Rogers and Mia Thompson. Sabriina will be starting her first year of college at the University of Central Florida. Mia will begin her second year at East Tennessee University. Both recipients will receive $1,250 for the 2017 university school year.

St. Andrew's Lutheran Church is your community church. We have a long tradition of serving children, families and seniors. St. Andrew's continues to serve the Finnish and English speaking congregations and seeks out ways to build fellowship. We do this through music, holiday festivities, smaller special events and our weekly worship services. Everyone is welcome to join us! St. Andrew's - seurakunta elää arjessa kanssasi.
