WP2012 Main approach Key drivers: Europe 2020 Strategy and its Flagship Initiatives on Innovation Union and Resource Efficiency European Research Area (ERA) objectives Novelties: Emphasis on innovation Challenge-driven approach More focused priorities and fewer and less prescriptive topics More flexibility and simplified Work Programme Wider participation of European industry and SMES 4 12.9.2011
WP2012 Main approach One overarching theme: Transformative and responsible innovation Three objectives Five priorities 5 12.9.2011
Orientations and Outline for WP2012 The approach and scientific direction for 2012 To follow a challenge driven approach and establish stronger linkages to innovation (AG) -> thus the Advisory Group (AG) proposed the overarching theme Transformative and Responsible Innovation (Innovation for sustainability should be both transformative to radically change the current practices and responsible to safeguard social and environmental goals as well as economic competitiveness). Specific objectives are: (1) Provide knowledge-based options for addressing major societal challenges notably climate change, land and sea management and resource efficiency (Europe 2020, Flagship Initiatives on Innovation Union and Resource Efficiency) (2) Develop and strengthen European leadership in innovation including key environmental technologies pursuing a broad concept of innovation, both research-driven innovation and new business models, eco-design, services (e.g. ecosystem services) and innovation in policy, governance and consumption behaviour (Innovation Union) (3) Promote and facilitate knowledge transfer, assessment, uptake and exploitation of scientific data and results, in particular through demonstration and delivery of innovative tools and services such as earth observation systems (Innovation Union) 6 12.9.2011
WP2012 Transformative and Responsible Innovation addressing 5 societal challenges (265 M ): Coping with climate change Sustainable use and management of land and seas Improving resource efficiency Protecting citizens from environmental hazards Mobilising environmental knowledge for policy, industry and society Cross-cutting activities: PPPs and EU-India initiative Cross-disciplinarity: the 5 challenges integrate various sub-activities of the Environment Theme 7 12.9.2011
