Re-use of Surplus Foundry Sand by Composting (LIFE13 ENV/FI/000285) Duration of project: 01 August 2014 30 September 2017 Total budget: 2,051.644 EU contribution: 996,070 Life 2014 infoseminaari ja työpaja hakemusten tekijöille Helsinki (SYKE, klo 10-15) Markku Tapola Meehanite Technology Oy Supported by EU Commission Environment Life Programme 2013
Objectives The LIFE-FOUNDRYSAND project aims to promote sustainable production, waste prevention and recycling by piloting innovative biological methods of cleaning different foundry waste sand types and eliminating hazardous organic trace contaminants. Study the cleaning of furan, phenolic, green and croning and waterglass sand types study the quality of the piloted samples in Finland and Spain, and ensure that they fulfil the product requirements for the reuse of cleaned sand as a substitute for ground construction materials or other soil-like materials for agricultural and geo-engineering applications Expected results New composting method developed for cleaning surplus foundry waste sand; Around 500-600 tonnes of foundry waste sand cleaned at pilot composting facilities in Finland and Spain; About 1900 samples will be analyzed Feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the new method calculated for Finland, Germany and Spain as pilot countries; Hazardous organic compounds (such as phenols, PAHs) cleaned with an efficiency of more than 95%. The final composted product will meet the national requirements for such materials; Reduction of methane emissions in comparison with landfilling; CO2 equivalent emissions reduced by more than 80% Meehanite Technology Ltd 2
Implementation actions 1. Preparation of compost sites in Finland and Spain (HUMUSPE, TECNALIA) in 2014/2015 2 composting sites are available to fulfill the requirements of the project 2. Surplus sand quality control and sand samples process in foundries (MEEHANITE, TECNALIA) Written procedure of the selection of foundry sand specimen representing correctly the molding sand quality to be composted 4. Composting in Finland (HUMUSPE) To find out the expected level of degradation period of harmful compounds of foundry sand Physical parameters effecting the results e.g. mixing ratio of sand/organics, temperature, humidity, aeration, drainage etc. Tests: 17 pilot made in Finland (6 windrows+ 1 meadow cast in summer 2015, 4 windrows in winter 2015/2016 and another 6 windrows in summer 2016 Phenolic, furan, water glass, green and croning sand types will be cleaned 3. Compost processing on laboratory scale (HELSINKI U) Experiments shall clarify the most efficient way to treat the materials for phenol reduction and other bio-degradable components under laboratory conditions At least 5 test series (each of size 200 kg container) will be tested with different foundry sand types to get preliminary test results for wide scale field tests 5. Composting in Spain (TECNALIA) 2 summer periods with 6 windrows in each summer in 2015/2016 Meehanite Technology Ltd 3
Implementation actions 6. Biological and chemical control (BIOPAP, HELSINKI U, TECNALIA) In total, about 1900 analyses are carried out. 7. Conclusions and project outcomes (MEEHANITE, HUMUSPEHTOORI, TECNALIA, AX-LVI Consulting) Practical guide: Construction recommendations for composters of cleaning the foundry sand by composting Applicability of cleaned foundry sand recycling in Finland, Germany and Spain Surplus foundry sand quality control in foundries About 300/500 foundries will be informed of the project results and receive practical guide to enhance the outcomes of this project Expected of the end/product of composted foundry sand is to fulfill the national quality criteria of fertilizers and other re/use purposes Meehanite Technology Ltd 4
